Amen to all of this!!! This is good info whether people are Christians or not. We opted out of all of the guilt trip “holidays” at least 15 years ago. What a freeing experience this has been in so many ways. Especially the Christmas guilt giving. We started looking at all the garbage people buy and how we are so controlled by big business EVERY YEAR. We gave away so much junk that was given to us. This is not what hard earned money should be wasted on in our opinions. Not exchanging gifts took awhile to take hold but we suggested to our families that we just share a nice meal, play games, listen to music and just socialize. By the second year after the awkwardness was gone it worked out flawlessly. We insisted that nobody buy for us and if they felt compelled to spend the money then donate what they planned to spend on us to charity or get what they need for the family. What is fun anyway about stressing out over what to buy people when they mostly have everything they need? Oddly nobody in the family donated to charity on our behalf. That was not a popular idea and it made me sad. What??? I don’t understand where the mentality comes from to buy junk for people who don’t need or want anything but don’t give to those in need?? We are not poops but we no longer buy for Christmas, our anniversary, our birthdays, Valentines, Easter or any other holiday I forgot to mention. We have become very comfortable living a life that flies in the face of social norms. As the saying goes....”whose life is it anyway?” Great topic as always. God Bless you both.

A thing people can do with Facebook for birthdays allows people to donate money to the charity of the birthday person’s choice. Everyone who I have graduated with does so. It is cheap than giving gifts and many of us don’t have the money for gift giving. I think you can do it for holidays. Many of us tell each other to donate to charities regularly. My high school had all it had because people donated money. It pushes many of us to give. You just need to start a tradition of giving within your social circle and hopefully it will outlive you.

I gave up the holidays years ago, and now celebrate the Biblical Feasts. ❤️ The ones that honor Father. Sukkot ( Tabernacles) is incredibly family oriented. Passover is BEAUTIFUL. The Day of Atonement is so powerful spiritually, fasting for the nation....much needed now btw. Great job guys. ❤️ Thanks for your transparency.

@@jodi9295 as a spirit-filled believer I do not do Christmas or any of the other holidays created by man/ RCC. After much research, I saw the origins of the holidays. I would suggest reading the word and allowing the Ruach Ha'Qodesh lead you. Consider the following passages: Zech.14:16-19 [The Feast of Tabernacles will be kept in the Millennial Kingdom (Lev.23)] John: 15:10 Acts: 2 [The disciples celebrated Shavuot (Pentecost)] There are literally 100's more endorsing the Torah. Yahusha was the perfect lamb, and the sacrificial law was abolished. HalleluYAH! Accepting Mashiach and receiving Grace does not mean we do not have to follow the Commandments, or celebrate the appointed times. Churchianity has done a serious disservice to believers. It's time to come out of her my people! You do not need seminary educated people to tell you what to think. Be guided by the word, cultivate your relationship with YAHUAH, not the church! We are the temple.

Heidi and Patrick, this resonates with me on so many levels. As a Christian who blindly spent time in false churches I've always had a part of me that felt uneasy about these 'holy' days and promoting their falsehood to my children. I'm so grateful my eyes have been opened unto many truths about the world presented to us and the world we actually live in. I thank you for being a part of that journey. Much love ❤

I just found this video, thank you! I stopped celebrating all Holidays, including birthdays more than a decade ago. Even as a small child it felt wrong to me. As I grew older and started learning the meaning (pagan), behind all of the holidays, as well as the consumerism of it all, I understood why it felt wrong as a child. I am the only one in my family/loved ones who feels this way, and many people look down on me as a result. However, I don’t let it bother me, I am confident in my decision to stop celebrating these days.

I TOTALLY agree with you! 👍🏼. When I was growing up, we didn’t have a television and celebrated the birthday and resurrection of Jesus. We didn’t have a Christmas tree and we got only one inexpensive gift as children. Satan makes the pagan festivals look fun and exciting with lots of glitter when in fact, people are stressing out and stampeding Walmart. December 25 is Nimrod’s birthday. Easter eggs are symbolism of the goddess Ashtoreth. Witches’ wands are made of holly, the Druids used mistletoe for poisoning people, .... Santa is a lie and distracts us from God. The more i learn how we have been programmed into pagan celebrations, the more I know I won’t be celebrating them.

Keep in mind that the Catholic church selected these “pagan” holidays because the people they were converting (basically it was convert or be killed) wouldn’t give up their holidays. So, the Church gave these holidays a Christian bent to lure the people away from their pagan beliefs. It isn’t Satan making these things looking fun, capitalism saw a good money making scheme and started guilting people into buying just to buy.

I walked away from holidays in 2019 and it was difficult the first two years with my immediate family but they finally realized it wasn’t just a phase and they accepted it, things are better. I felt such relief when I gave it up. I can’t get my family to give up birthday celebrations, even mine, but I am not spending a lot of money anymore on gifts. I am celebrating God’s holidays now at a Messianic synagogue and it’s been such a blessing. I wish I had given all this up long ago. It would have saved us a lot of money & stress and it would have been a blessing to our children to learn this early in their lives.

Oddly enough it was my oldest son, at age 25 who came to me after his first son was born and said he was not going to celebrate Christmas or Easter anymore because it was pagan. He explained everything to me and said his son would not be taught about "Christmas". I totally believed everything he told me because he was passionate and explained everything in detail...the tree..the fertile Easter bunny etc. At first I felt bad ..my first grandchild etc. Eventually it became practicing the Sabbath ON THE SABBATH. SO we will also have a family get together and tons of food. We buy the children a nice gift here and there and they are "gifts of love". My son is now 44, his son and daughter are very well adjusted and don't feel deprived in any way. Personally I had a harder time switching my Sabbath than the Holiday thing. My sons knew I hated Halloween from the get go and they could only have costumes that were not demonic. I think the younger you start your family making Jesus and truth the goal, the better off everything is. Also taking Communion at HOME WHEN FELT LED TO is TRUE Communion with God. Thank you for bringing this up. Blessings EVERY day of the year to you and yours.💚🍃🕊🍃💚🌿🕊🕊💚❤🤗🤗🤗

I don't know how I never saw this before. This is such a lovely video, thank you both for sitting down for this. I agree with everything you've said. When I was a child, my family was extremely poor and even moreso after my parents divorced. I remember one year, all my mom could give us were very simply bed clothes that she sewed by hand in between jobs. We had our 3 foot tall reusable tree, and that was about it. So instead for holidays, my mom put on Christmas music or we would sing and she would play her flute to Christmas songs, we'd decorate the tree with mostly-homemade ornaments, we'd watch the old Rudolph shows and Charlie Brown holiday shows, and we'd play all the games that families get in fights over lol. Despite all those sibling fights, those were my favorite times of year because we didn't really do that stuff outside of holidays. I learned from a very young age that spending time with family is more important than indulging in countless presents, which only induces greed or resentment. I remember when I was 10 and my mom was dating a much wealthier man and for the first time in my life we had a commercial Christmas (the kind you see in ads and such) and I snuck into one of my presents and even lied and said it was in my stocking (my mom knew better of course)... despite all those pretty presents, it was an empty day. It wasn't magical like the other times had been. I didn't know what I was missing till that particular Christmas, and it turned out what I'd been missing wasn't even fun. The nostalgia I get now from thinking of Christmas doesn't stem from those presents, it's from the family time we had, and how people in general seemed nicer and happier during holidays when I was a kid. Then of course as I grew older, like you both, I learned the truth behind what we today call Christmas and Easter and all these other "holidays". The Holiness was completely flushed out of them, no matter how well Nativity Scenes sell during December. I try to keep an open mind on the actual date of Jesus' birth because I know that is contested, so mostly what I personally celebrate now is the Meaning of His birth. Of course the stockings full of goodies and Easter baskets are fun, but there is no Christ in any of that. Whether the "Progressive" Left likest it or not, without Christ, none of us would be here today. There would have been another Flood, a world-wide Sodom & Gomorrah, or worse (and as of today, western societies on a whole probably deserve worse than another Great Flood AND Sodom & Gomorrah). And some of the other minor holidays have actually disturbing, almost horrifying backgrounds, stuff that would make the origins of the Mother Goose rhymes look almost angelic. Today, because my daughter has autism and doesn't quite understand the depth of the holidays and because she's mentally stuck at a younger age that sees excitement in presents under the tree Easter baskets, I do celebrate them for her and try to make special foods that are different than what I normally make. But I still play Christmas music non-stop, I decorate the tree with ornaments she makes or ones we make together, I have her pick out special foods or foods she really wants to eat for those days; and if she really likes those foods, they become regular meals). As much as I can't do with her as far as family time because she such a solo person, it's as family oriented as I can get it, and I think singing Christmas songs helps keep Jesus always in mind. I never expect anything for myself, either, nor on my birthday, to me those are just another day. We're not in time where it was a miracle for people to live a year longer, and I personally get really uncomfortable with being handed something and told to open it. I don't know if that's an introvert thing, but it does feel like I'm being called out and expected to perform ad lib. The social media reminders are awful, too. When I was a child, I knew my phone number, my address, my school, my neighbor's, my friends birthdates and numbers and addresses, I knew the local grocery store number for awhile. Human brains were memory banks just 25 or so years ago. I'm 40 now and just a couple years ago had to push myself to re-memorize my mom's number and my brother's number and my daughter's SS#. I can do it, now, but I still have a lot of practice to re-memorize more family numbers and such. Social birthday reminders are empty. They do not mean a thing. It's for personal gratification only for the person saying "Happy Birthday," a sort of savior-complex. It's just another one of those things that, when you look far enough back, reveal how long they've been slowly conditioning us - programming us - to dismember community and live in isolation, like they want us doing with those Virtual Reality headsets.

The commercialized version of Christmas started in the 1800s when advertising started becoming a really big thing. My family has broken away from that. As my mother says, no gifts, only family, and what the holiday really means. We have a meal together and that's all the celebrating we do. Easter, other holidays and "days," the same thing. I find helping others as needed throughout the year is a better way of giving and caring than only doing it because it's a holiday and people feel warm and fuzzy for doing it.

I wish I could get my husband onto this program. After my accident I told ALL my family members to donate any money to a local food bank, or family that they would us to purchase gifts for me. I need nothing, but the love of family. They are the most precious gift of all. As I lay in the hospital bed with a brain like a baby, the only thing that mattered was the love from the people who came to see me. When I went home I didn't recognize it, or anything in it, but the family, who I still didn't recognize, brought me so much comfort. Like a baby, it cares not about stuff, only the love of its people and as I write this, during the Corona Virus, I am hopeful that people will get back to the basics and find joy in their life. God Bless you both for offering an alternative to the consumerism that rules in our culture.

my 2 most cherished "things" are a Christmas card my grandmother gave me - she would date it and we would give it back to her so she could write in it again (short and sweet) and date it again. I have that card and it went through 10 years of Christmas. The other was the very first check she wrote (cashed and stamped like they did way back when) me for cleaning her house one summer. I don't cherish the "check" but I cherish her handwriting on that check... it has my name and hers on it and the date and I just love it. I have things that I have been given that I like and that I truly enjoy using etc.. BUT.. nothing compares to those two things. If I could take anything to Heaven with me it would be those two things...they are that loved by me. They were not expensive nor the latest and greatest... matter of fact, they are two nearly obsolete things... cards and checks lol

This Christmas I gave hand written gift certificates for home made items or for something I could do for them, like babysitting. I handmade the cards and then the gift certificates. I get "the look" when I say I don't celebrate holidays. I stopped after my 9 year old son declared me a horrible mother because I did not get him enough gifts for Christmas. My children live with their father so my time with them is very little and very precious. I was making the most of my time with them and not spending a lot of money which I didn't have to begin with. I have now downsize birthday and Christmas to four gifts. Mostly small items or books puzzles board games things that we can do as a family. They know better than to ask me to go out and eat because we cook a family meal together. I set and chuckle every time I see an advertisement that you have to buy new linens on President's Day and new furniture for Memorial Day and you must BBQ for this day and don't forget to spend three months salary on a diamond engagement ring. People need to get their heads out of the sand and realize that Simplicity is really the best way to go. Throwing money at a relationship no matter what relationship is does not make it any better. Your time is the most precious gift you can give anybody.

Amen, I agree! My husband and I with our family and friends began a policy of “Presence is the best gift” Walks, picnics, pot lucks, home dinners together, sitting by the fire pit, FaceTime or phone calls are wonderful ways to spend time together as a gift of presence. As for V day and Mother’s/Father’s days should be shown every day. Love your spouse, parents and children on the daily not just on appointed days.

Agreed 💯! My son struggled with coming home at Thanksgiving time. Granted I would love to see him any chance I get, however, it was a lot of work to get days off for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I told him, as Catholics ( as anyone) we should be thankful every day not just one day of the year. Now the pressure is off him to get days off, find a pet sitter etc. me and my kids highly dislike those hallmark so called holidays. I keep telling my inlaws lets just get together and enjoy the company. Nope. They buy and buy and buy. The first year I decided I wasnt giving anyone anything ( except giving cash to my kids) i did feel guilty. But now I dont. I hope they get the hint that since im not buying gifts that they will stop. I just want to enjoy the get together with out the bustle of presents. ❤️

So glad to hear!! It took me a long time to do the same. You are so right. Society/Christians don't yet see that they are manipulated/guilt tripped for money. We can celebrate Christ's birth on any day, as no one knows when it actually is. Thank you for being so transparent and making a public stand. Many people don't know the origins of holidays they just enjoy these days like a small child is excited about candy and fun on Halloween. Everyone needs to be brave and take a stand against paganism in every form. Despite push back which will now come from family. God will bless you both for this that needed to be said.

I agree! About 15 years ago I told my kids I thought it was crazy too spend on gifts no one needed or wanted. Further it only helped business banks and employers. I much prefer to share a special meal and time together. Small tokens are picked up occasionally but homemade is best and requires care and thought. Thoughtful gifts of time or love thru out the year is more meaningful to us. We are not guaranteed tomorrow so flowers today can be appreciated so no flowers at the funeral please . Since the first time I worked on Black Friday I've never been so appalled at the phrase " I got the last one" yelled in triumph at 6:30 am . The shameless greed everywhere convinced me I was on the right path. To go into debt for stuff 🙄

CHRISTMAS = Jeremiah, 10 1 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs [1] of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. / Halloween, all about evil / Easter, bunnies don't lay eggs, sacrilegious. / Sabbath is Saturday the 7th day of the week, Sunday is the 1st day of the week. The catholic church changed the day of worship to Sunday for convenience sake for business. Though I hear the calendar we go by isn't quite right and we can figure out the actual Sabbath day by the moon, but I haven't learned enough about that yet. The bottom line is, when we go before God on judgement day we can't say, "The preacher told me", or my mom, friend, brother, sister, whatever, we are all responsible to know for ourselves what is good, true and right in God's eyes. God bless!

Wow! Thank you! I'm in my late 30s; and for the most part my generation is very commercially oriented; and we have four kids, so people are always very confused that for the most part we do not celebrate holidays; and we celebrate differently than others we know when we do celebrate. I get given a hard time all the time; and I have been told I'm depriving my children, but I can assure you, my children do not feel deprived because the experiences that we have are richer than the commercial aspects of these holidays!

The real deprivation to our children is teaching them lies (Santa Clause, Easter Bunny, etc) and focusing their attention on their fleshly wants rather than the needs of others.

It has been 15 years for us simply because the holidays are not Biblical or of Christ. Television went too as there is absolutely nothing edifying about it. It's amazing how much time we have to spend forging close personal and family bonds, developing new traditions, and growing in love. It has drawn us all closer together and closer to Jesus. It has been a rewarding journey. God is good!

Very wise words in this video. I see that this video was made a few years ago but I'm so happy to watch this and hear your words that confirm what we also believe. Most people just 'go with the flow of society' and don't do their research to find out the pagan roots of most (if not all) of these celebrations. Our hard earned money needs to be used in much better ways to help those that really need it than the guilt giving of things that a person doesn't need or want. Family get-togethers are not supposed to be stressful. Heidi and Patrick - thank you for your truth and supporting what I've been thinking and saying for years. May our Father in Heaven bless you both.

You have never pushed Christianity and have always done a great job of making others feel whole and believer or not this holds true for us all. The trap of the consumer driven society hinders most of us. I have felt the same way about scrounging for gifts just to check someone off of a list but not celebrating at all had made me feel like a buzz kill and we struggle to find our balance. Going into debt is no longer an option

As a messianic Jewish believer we stopped doing Christmas back in the early 90s. My son was 12 at the time. We were celebrating Chanukah instead (John 10) and remember Yeshua's (Jesus ') birthday at Tabernacles (evidence suggests He was born in the autumn) simply by reading the relevant scriptures . Regarding santa, my children by age 6 knew that it wasn't real. I made sure we discussed it on a hot summer's day, so as to lessen its importance. But I said we can pretend, with the stories etc. We also explained they should not upset other children at school by saying santa is not real......that's up to their parents to sort!!!!! It worked out well.

Good for you! I am 82 now and many years ago declared I was not giving presents to adults any more, only to kids. I would give each of the 6 grandkids $25 (this was 20 years ago) to spend as they wished. In recent times, I decided not to be constricted by calendar dates, but to "watch and wait" to see where I could contribute a gift in a timely, meaningful way. To provide something truly desired or needed rather than "find something to give..." merely because of holiday dictates. I too, deplore the commercial demand made on us as "consumers" to (literally) buy into the stream of spenders around set times of the year. Yes, real celebrations of important life and world events should be honored and recognized - but, who said they must also trigger the purchase of a gift or gifts? We need to get back to what's important and stop cluttering up the landscape with unwanted junk. Thank you, for reminding us.

It is funny how it is, it is like people are just so caught up in tradition, they cannot see that they are allowing themselves to get stressed out over buying junk for each other and cannot seem to see the waste of time, money, and sanity it all is. I believe that even for the family that still celebrates, they are all actually grateful we are no longer a part of that so they can check us off the list! Well, all except our oldest son, he is the only one that does not quite get it yet even though he is 27 and last Christmas he still bought us something he thought we needed. It was all good though and we did not allow it to make us feel guilty for not doing anything because Patrick helps him a lot through the year fixing up his house and we give eggs, garden produce, and other things all through the year.

I know this video is a year old, but I just watched it today. I think a lot of people are starting to question more and more the commercialism of all those holidays that you are addressing. I’m Norwegian and we celebrate “jul” at Christmas, which was the original Norse name for the celebrations of winter solstice - gift, drinks and good food with friends and family. Then “jul” got incorporated together with St Nicholas and hence Santa Claus once Christened... We even have an old folklore going back 1000-1500 years about “nisse” who lives in the barn and takes care of the animals; who now look like a tiny Santa according to commercialism! All in all, taking care of each other, being kind, giving a small gift if appropriate, but most of all spending time together......that is what “jul” was intended to when related to winter solstice, and for a fortunate crop season ahead 🙏🏻

People can think what they want to think of me I do not go to Christmas gatherings birthday gatherings Thanksgiving gatherings I just don't and you're right I never feel so guilty when I cannot take a gift I have always baked cookies, candies,, cakes and muffins I don't feel that it was ever appreciated but I'm fine with that. I'm hearing you, I really am. I do want to say though that I very thoroughly enjoyed the gifts my kids so thoughtfully bought me for Christmas this year & I will enjoy them nearly daily and for years to come. I know by the excitement shown that all of us greatly valued each other's thoughtful expression of love in the gifts we unwrapped and even in the beautiful and careful wrapping itself. I was truly blessed and not one gift of the over 40 gifts exchanged by half a dozen family members was unwanted "junk" that will gather dust.

I would say that this is the wonderful part of being an expat. I get to choose which holidays to keep, and which to leave. I even get to choose what we do for each holiday. Easter isn't big for us at all, as it is at Iranian New Year. We dye eggs and have lamb (a tradition going back generations, and not expensive here). We do Halloween, but they are 5 minute costumes using the clothes they have. My son will be a bat this year using a black shirt with scraps of black material. My daughter will be a rock star using clothes she already has. I make a pinata for Dia De Los Muertos, and we visit the graves of our family members who have passed. There's some candy, homemade decor, and a Jack O lantern, which I don't leave out for long (I want to he able to use as much as possible. Christmas and Halloween are mainly times for us to watch movies and read stories together. For Christmas, I try to knit them a sweater each. Not sure if I'll be able to with my hand injury this year. Other gifts are normally school supplies, and clothes they *need*, 1 toy, and 1 boardgame we can play as a family. There are normally a few socks, as those are always needed. I buy clothes on sale the year before, so they get their winter clothes as Halloween gifts and summer clothes as Easter gifts. But I'd say our celebrations aren't even 1/100 of what we would do if we were still in the US.

Thanksgiving is my favorite. Just get together with gratitude. Christmas has been difficult for me . I am studied and aware. EVERYDAY I celebrate the birth and resurrection of Jesus. Salvation. The Word tells us to be aware of delectable dairies yet we put Christ name on cookies and candy. We are taught to be a lender and not a borrower yet all on one day there is an expectation to buy all these gifts. I prefer to bless people throughout the year. I would like Christmas to be more like Thanksgiving. I do respect for others to do what is right for them.

I fully understand where the two of you are coming from about the commercialization and 'guilt' around the holidays. Personally, birthdays are an excuse to have dinner with my family or my best friend and celebrate that they/we are alive and have this time together. Christmas is extra special. Christmas is wrapped up in so much emotion and sentiment for me I could never do without. Every year I decorate the tree, putting on ornaments that were handmade by my grandmother or gifted by loved ones, listening to carols. Then Oh Holy Night comes on (my personal favourite) and I wind up crying with tears of joy. I revel in all the blessings God has given me. The gift of His Son. My life, my family, eveything. It is a special and powerful reminder for me every year of the glory of God.
