@Mike Bastiat True, but small is subjective. I came from a fairly large metropolitan area of 1.2-1.3 million people to a city of about 20K surrounded by farms and small towns. I loved it at first but it's still too big. I don't want to be in a place like 500 where everyone is all up in your business but I do definitely want smaller. I know I'll have issues anywhere but if I have quiet I'll be happy. Happier, anyway haha

I moved from a major city and one thing they definitely don’t tell you is it really is like a time warp lol it takes about 30 minutes just to get into town that has a Meijer or anything , The population of our village is 780 I live in the Township of that which is 2800 approximately 😎 the Village is definitely too small gossip wise 😂

Just found your channel. Can't tell you how many times my sister and I have had this same conversation...my mom [86 yrs. old] is the stir-crazy one. When we were young, 'going to town' was an 'event'. There was a tiny old market mid way [with wood floors that sagged] that we'd stop at after church every Sunday. Then there was 'town' 45 miles away, and I don't think we went there but once a month. There was a doctor that came to your house if you needed him [he delivered me]...none of this 'going to town' to the clinic, doctor, or pharmacy every 5 seconds. My sister and I walked to school K-8th grade. We shopped the Sears and JC Penny catalogs for school clothes until I was given Grandma's old Singer sewing machine converted from treadle to electric, and learned to sew. The library loved to see us coming because we'd bring paper bags and fill them up. We built forts out in the wild blackberry vines, wild rose bushes, and white oak babies at the back of the property. We were given free run of the ranches around us, so we'd spend summer in the irrigation ditches with the frogs, turtles, dragonflies, and water snakes. We'd go on walks and bike rides and drag home armfuls of teasle, pussywillows, and cattails. The 'trip to town' once involved a 'dip' in the road at the bottom of the mountain [which was thrilling because dad would always speed up so we'd get airborne]...they took that out. It once had a drive-in movie theater...they took that out. It once had a mill with sprinklers watering the log decks...took that out. It once had an A&W drive in...took that out. It once had a western wear store...took that out. It once had a big fabric store...took that out. Now it's just government run businesses, gas stations, a couple of churches, fast food, WalMart, meth neighborhoods, 'shady o'grady hotels, complete with a 'tent city' right across the street from the Behavioral Health building. Woo-hoo! Yep. Nope - not missing it.

My nieces and nephews still talk about our adventures playing at the creek, picnics by the lake and such - they're really OK with giving up the computer games to get out and explore. Our family is now on the next generation of nieces and nephews and still enjoy our nature walks and building forts at the creek.

You girls are totally speaking my language when it comes to staying home. I’m 64 but have been the same for decades. After being raised in an abusive home and always wanting to be elsewhere, I moved out when I reached legal age and since then, home is my favorite place to be and I also don’t get lonely, or get cabin fever, etc. The money & time saving aspects are definitely a thing too. Also, PEOPLE…ugh. I’m very leery around folks I don’t know anyway and as crazy & rude as our world has become, no thank you. I have my husband and a couple of neighbor ladies that I’ll have coffee with once a week or so and I’m perfectly fine with all that…now if I could just get my daughter to move closer than a 6 hr drive away I’d be complete :).

Don't know how I ended up here (but I'm so glad I did!) but it's really interesting to hear these views. As someone living in London, England who regularly travels an hour across the city to meet a friend for dinner then back, after a ten hour working day, it makes for interesting reflection. The thought of a fifteen minute drive being a significant period of time is just so different. I think that's why I love these videos because life in Appalachia is just so different to mine here in London. Keep up the great content 😊

That is contributing to so many brick and mortar stores to go out of business, and giving Amazon great power! It is unhealthy for our economy and the variety of goods to give so much business to one source. Walmart caused many locally-owned and small business chains to go out of business. Amazon is now causing Walmart, big box, AND locally owned stores to close. That removes money and workers out of those communities, which leads to school and hospital closures and no community growth. Unemployment, empty businesses, and decreased community services lead to increased crime.

For over 45 years, I had to leave home for work, errands and church. Not one single day a week at home unless I was sick. Now that I am retired, I fill my little car up once a month and leave home only for medical appointments, grocery pickup or other mandatory things. This means about 5 trips somewhere each month. I just think about getting back home the entire time I am away.

I am a homebody, too! I am 68 years old and grew up going to town with my mom and grannie twice a month. I now have dr appointments that take more trips than I am happy with. Hello Corie and Katie, you mentioned your mom saying not to get angry at the slow driver, the driver may be having some issues for whatever reason.She said the Lord may be slowing you down for a reason. my brother n law once told me the same thing. you have a flat tire, car trouble, or running late you get upset about it, well the good Lord may be keeping you from a car wreck or some other catastrophe up ahead of you. Your video really resonated with me. For us it's 45 minutes each way to town. We go once ever 3 weeks and that's it. We have a running list on the dining room table all the time. You take something off the shelf, you put it on the list. And like you said - if you run out or miss something - too bad - you live without until the next trip. I figured it costs me around $20 in gas just to go to town and back. That would really add up if I went every week. I am the same about getting things done! No time to waste, I say! I plan one trip a week. My work already takes me out on roads too much and then I just want to go home. My dad is from Appalachia but he raised his family in a completely different area. We were always viewed as different because of things we did like grow our own food, or sometimes didn't do, like hang out in town for hours just because! I felt like how I was raised was the problem because of what others said for the longest time. After being compelled to move back to Appalachia, however, I quickly realized I wasn't raised wrong, I was just raised in the wrong place! This is where I belong. I always hated living in the big cities of Flatlandia, anyway! So glad that, I also, have found people like me :)

Having a limit and a set schedule for trips to town is definitely an Appalachian thing, almost everyone from our region can relate. It comes from a time when it was harder for our families to get places like y'all said, but I think this type of lifestyle still resonates with most of us even though we're able to get around a lot easier now. Even those who don't necessarily keep with this tradition understand the notion, the phrase itself ( "going to town" ) is very Appalachian. I'm grateful for every last bit of traditional life that we're able to hold on to, the things that have been handed down to us are precious. Tradition has been painted as something negative in our modern world, it seems like there's been an effort to make the concept synonymous with being "backward," ignorant, or uneducated. In my eyes, it's ignorant to just throw away the gifts we've been given. There's wisdom and reasoning behind the vast majority of our traditions, this is why these things became traditions in the first place. Assuming that we know better than those who came before us just because a little time has passed is extremely arrogant in my opinion. I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, sorry about that, lol. It always reminds me that there are still ppl who value tradition whenever I watch y'all though, you girls are a breath of fresh air for sure. Hope y'all are doing well.

We live over an hour from "town" and only make the trek twice a month. Now we do have other small towns 20-30 minutes from ours (we live up on the mountainside) so we can shop local if necessary. But we just make the one long trip off mountain twice a month. Our family is the same way in that we just prefer to stay home or close to home. We really dislike those trips, but they are necessary. I can see how you guys can say I hate going to town or not like going to town or whatever. I think the difference is if you have a strong family base you have everything there that you need to talk to to socialize with to spend time with. But if you don’t have a strong family base and things on this nature then you’re outside looking for something to fill that void whether it’s spending money to make yourself feel better about yourself or going out just so you can have that social interaction or whatever you’re doing some thing to fill a void.

I currently live almost an hour from the nearest small town, only has 1 grocery store, and about 2 hrs from the nearest Walmart. I haven't been to town in over 4 months. Usually only go to town once, maybe twice a year. I was raised that way then joined the military and for 27 years traveled all over the world, but now I stay home and love it.

Thank y’all so much for putting what I have always thought into words. We live in Texas and growing up it was 30 minutes to the nearest Walmart. Mama did ALL the “town stuff” on Mondays because we had piano lessons that day. We did the library, shopping, lessons, on Monday and then stayed on the farm the rest of the week. Now as an adult with my own family, I relate to what you are saying. I live 10 minutes from the nearest Walmart but being around so many people gives me the heebie jeebies. I just don’t like crowds. Never have. Now with four children I also acknowledge I am way outnumbered when we go out. More vulnerable. Someone could grab one of my kids and then I must choose quickly, do I run after her and leave the others? Not worth it to me. Better to stay home and keep the home fires burning.

I get this. This is how I grew up, too. "Town" for us was 1/2 hour away, and at best a once a week thing, or most often every other week or once a month. My mom worked in a grocery store (she was the local butcher) so she brought home the gorceries we needed when needed, so not much reason to need to go to town, unless dad wanted to treat us to McDondalds or a movie on occasion.

I love the segment. I live in a very rural part of Southern Middle Tennessee and I hate going to town. I live four and a half miles from a town of 550 people that only has a small Dollar general store, so to get supplies or groceries I have to drive 20 minutes one way. I never heard anybody else explain it the way you guys have explained it and that's exactly how I feel. With that said I work in another County that has over 100,000 people but I go to work I may stop at convenience store on the way home but I come straight home otherwise. You have no idea how better this video makes me feel. I live on Long Island & it has gotten so much more crowded than when I was a kid. It is unbearable to go out on a weekend to do food shopping or errands. Powder Milk, Butter, Karo Syrup, Peanut butter and commodity cheese ! Then mom would go to the grocery store afterwards. I've always been a home body even as a young adult. I'd be hearing about friends or acquaintances going to a ton events, parties, etc and I was thankful I wasn't going. You ladies have logic and it sounds like it runs in the family. It reminds me a lot of my family especially my father, he's very logical and very keen on following logic. It's refreshing to hear you girls express yourselves and posses sense and logic, it seems like it's getting lost on people more and more these days. I'm with you on the whole going to town as minimal as possible and driving as minimal as possible. I unfortunately live in a smaller town but consider it going to town just leaving the house or going to the grocery store. The older I get the more I dislike it, the large amount of lesser intelligent people with no situational awareness, driving like crazy, walking like zombies in the store in the way of everything etc. Ironically when I was younger I used to love driving, I'd go for little trips just for fun and to relax but driving is the further thing from relaxing anymore. I can't believe how wreckless and careless people drive these days, I can't tell if it's I'm just getting older and becoming more aware of it or if people are just getting worse. I am an artist with a studio in my home in town. I love staying home, but sometimes it gets a little too quiet and I go out just to hear and see people moving around and talking 😂 sounds crazy, but true. My house is too quiet sometimes, and I’m an introvert by nature and get overwhelmed by too much social stuff!

Also, as a husband, dad, and big brother of younger sisters, I love seeing how alert to your surroundings you two are, even while filming. I see so many women (and men) who are a million miles away while in parking lots, stores etc, and that's a quick way to become a victim. You gals have your heads on a swivel and that's great! I totally understand what you’re saying. I moved from a large city to a small town although it’s a resort town. Because of it being a resort town I choose to do errands when tourists aren’t here or we do without. We are so lucky to have the luxury of living in a less populated place because of all the things you guys talked about. I feel for the people who aren’t able to choose (because of their circumstances) to be away from the mass of humanity and all that it entails.

I love this conversation. I grew up in mountains of Southern West Virginia and during the time my dad worked for state road he got paid once a month and only then would we go to town when dad got paid. Dad worked in coal mines on and off not sure how often he got paid then, I do know we didn't go to town very often. Moved to Northern Virginia as a teenager and dad got paid weekly so we went grocery shopping every Friday evening. Now that I'm closer to age 70, I prefer staying home more than going outside of my home fighting this Northern Virginia traffic and having to be around people using profanity left and right I don't want to hear that kind of talk and it's so rampant in our society today.

Great subject & video!! I feel the same way about going to town. I make a list throughout the week, then select what stores I need to shop @, research the least busy times for each place, then develop a travel logic map. I've found shopping in my small town is best early (~8:30 AM) on either Monday or Tuesday mornings (much fewer people/traffic). The only exception to this is my farm pickup which is scheduled for 4PM on Friday afternoons, which I dread every week. Remember, the only thing you can not make, purchase, modify or stop is ur time.

You girls hit it right on the head. I’m from PA and live on a mountain, not like your mountains. Anyways, I find the older I get the more I like to stay at home. When I do go out I make a list and try to stick to it. There are two places I have to have a very good reason to go there. One is where our malls are and two , to the city of Allentown. They are both about 15 minutes to get to, but like you said , the traffic. I don’t like driving to begin with, and there are too many people out there driving. I always think that I’ll take the back roads, but there aren’t any anymore. They are building up everything like crazy. Well I’m sorry about going on and on. I guess this subject hit a nerve 😊 Love listening to you girls and thank you for sharing.

Grocery pick-up is excellent!!!! I've gotten it down to once every 2 weeks. I even place holds on all my library books. Less driving, fewer people, more better!! :)

I am a homebody also. I can always find things to do. Or not do! 🙂🙂. Home is my haven of happiness. I, too, like to go to town and try to get everything done. If there was anything positive to begin during the pandemic it was curbside shopping. We love it! I can put a grocery order in during the middle of the night in my nightgown if I want to. 🙂.

I lived in the Catskill Mountains of upstate NY for 60 years and we only went into town shopping once a week, also. It was 30 minutes away. I live in Florida now with a Walmart 2 minutes from my house but I still only go once a week. 😂 Like you, I never get bored at my house. ❤

I get stressed anytime I go to town. Our nearest town is a small country town, only about 3,000 people... its fine there most of the time. You get in and get out quickly. Going to any bigger towns, or the occasional trip to the nearest big city metropolitan area... I literally feel my shoulders and neck tense up, and I can't hardly stand the people and the tension.

Yes!!! I am the exact same way! I’m a writer so I also work from home, plus all my hobbies and favorite things like reading, baking, and playing guitar and piano are at home so I could never get bored being at home!! I also live in the north Georgia mountains so there is plenty of beautiful scenery to take in with just a step outside my door. I love these “why we don’t like” videos, I’m a new subscriber and I absolutely love you guys!! I have been watching the mountain devotionals too, those have been such a blessing ❤️ My grandmother is my best friend in the world and honestly these why we don’t like videos sound so much like the talks I have with her haha! I swear y’all are like the sweet Christian friends I always wanted but could never find 😂 It’s nice to feel like my little quirks are not so weird after all. I really enjoyed this video for several reasons. I have lived in a small town, really it's called a village (300 -400 people), for the last eight years and enjoy every minute of the peace and quiet. That said, I am so much like you girls in that I enjoy staying home and it doesn't matter if I have a lot of work to do around the house, sit on the porch getting fresh air, doing crafts, reading or just watching tv, I don't really feel lonely. I know for me having God in my life, I am never alone. Also, like you if I have to go to town, which can be up to three months at a time, which is about an hour away I make sure that I get everything done that day. Thankfully if I need anything that I might have forgotten, I have a dollar general and family dollar/dollar tree just down the road less than five minutes. I hate going back into town because the people drive crazy and it makes me very nervous and I had lived in this town pretty much all my life. Give me the country with plenty of space, peace and quiet and plenty of fresh air. Ty for sharing. God bless you both and your family.

Agreed... We shopped once a week in the bigger city about 40 minutes from where we lived. The small town we lived in had a few conveniences but if you needed to buy a full bill of groceries then we have to go to the larger city. Our little town only had gas stations and an Affiliated store. So you can imagine that one day a week was a big deal to all of us LOL we treated it like a special day. We would usually eat out and do other fun things while we were there. I do agree with you Corie... I am a homebody too. I'm very content to be at home and do all the things that I enjoy. We have never eaten out everyday, nor even once a week. I've raised my sons the same way. It makes it more fun when you do go out to eat because it is special/not the norm. The way I look at it what you're pretty much saying is you were raised in a traditional family and I was too. And I've raised my sons to be traditional.

I live in (what USED to be) a smaller town in Southern Idaho, and I can definitely appreciate what ya'll are talking about. Unfortunately for me, I have to drive in to town every day for work, and it drives me nuts. It's not my driving I'm worried about, it's all of the other crazies on the road. We have had a huge influx of people moving in from out of state in the past 2 years, and it makes going anywhere a chore. I also avoid Walmart like the plague because it draws out every scuzzball from around town. No thank you!

I’m from the Midwest and I feel the exact same way😊 I don’t think it’s so much a regional thing I think it’s more of a personality type that makes us this way. I’ve become more introverted and a homebody as the years have gone by and for a long time I thought I was a freak kinda! I started watching KZbin videos a few years ago and have found so many content creators who are introverted and consider themselves homebodies like me. This reminds me of summers spent in the country at my grandparents. We went to town once a week too. And it was a big event. Wore Sunday best. We girls went with our grandmother to have her hair done and the boys went with my grandfather to barber shop. We did all the girl errands and they did the guy things. And it was only once a week. You’d have to wait till next week if you needed something. Miss those days.

I have to agree. I only leave our home once a week as well, and I live up in the mountains, but when I go to town, I do consider this to be an opportunity to share the gospel with others who may be lost. It’s definitely difficult to be around tons of people, they usually have worse manners too! But I think we are not called to comfort. Hope that’s encouraging ❤

If it was up to me I'd never leave my house. I go to town two or three times a month and that's too much, but I gotta have groceries. I pay all my bills online, and since I'm retired I just enjoy the day after all my chores are done. My wife is the same way. Like Dorothy said, there's no place like home.
