You'd think at a theme park they would have mini games at the side of the those reaaaaly long queues. Something as simple as getting a basketball in a hoop and other different mini games would do.
@seabb7 жыл бұрын
Actually, in some Disney park rides they do have little games for kids to play while they wait. At Disney World, the wait for the seven dwarf's gem cave ride is literally 2-3 hours, all for a 3 minute ride. They have the line weave through a forest area, the inside of a log cabin, and lots of cave before you finally reach the place to board. Along the way, though, they have mini games like touchscreen gem matching, water spouts that react to motion, and barrels of gems that you can spin to project an image onto the ceiling. It's actually pretty cool, were it not for the still extremely long wait. I actually remember the wait better than the actual ride because of how short the ride was.

I think being super close to strangers may deter people because you don’t want them all up in your business nor do you want to disturb others near you with the content on the phone making noise or something similar. AND you have to turn your earphones off so you can be ready to speak with the cashiers and pay, even though most people still listen to music while in line (I do, but I turn it off when I’m second in line). Entertainment can, indeed, make time seem slow or fast. Time seems to speed by real fast when watching a good movie, while a movie half the run time that is boring can feel sooo much longer. Do a video on why most people overestimate distances while walking. I travel a lot, I walk when I'm in a city if it's possible, and that means I ask directions all the time. ALMOST ALWAYS, when I ask how far a certain place is, I get told that it's miles away, or at the very least, that it's much farther than it actually is. I call these overestimated distances 'yuppie miles'...it annoys me...I want to understand...
@digitalgamer37227 жыл бұрын
i am 8 my guess is that they are used to riding vehicles so they get tired and assume that it is longer. Another possibly related topic, if I'm walking around to a new place the distance feels longer for some reason. Maybe because i have to pay more attention to the enviroment and exert mental effort. The same walk back also feels shorter than the first
@primoaurelius7 жыл бұрын
Digital Gamer I assume it has something to do with vehicles as well. Most people drive or take transit these days, and because that is what they are used to, when they try to translate those distances into walking, they overestimate. But you would think that when every car has an odometer, that folks would eventually figure out how far a mile is. I've pretty much stopped asking "how far" and started asking "how long will it take for me to walk there", but even then most people just can't give the right answer...
@Grimfang9997 жыл бұрын
I have the opposite problem. If I can see the other end of the street, I think it will only take a couple minutes. sometimes can take up to 10...
@seabb7 жыл бұрын
I overestimate how long it takes me to walk, even if I know the distance. Even if I'm just traveling half a mile that a normal person would take at the most, ten minutes, I estimate it would take me twenty. I always get there in 7 or 8, though. It might be just because I tend to walk pretty fast. I guess it's better to overestimate than be late, though.

Shell B usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes of steady walking to go a mile, so 7 or 8 minutes for half a mile sounds just right.

My problem with waiting, at least for important things, like getting licenses or something, I have a bad memory, so I'm trying so hard to remember everything I need/want to say or ask, while also paying close attention to when I'll be called, that I'm an anxious mess by time I'm actually called. Sure, I could hop on my phone for a bit, but I'm terrified that I'll forget something important when I finally get called if I do that, or miss them calling me entirely! I've been diagnosed with a panic disorder though. So probably it's a bit harder for me than the average person.

I'm actually usually not too bothered by waiting. I try to avoid it if possible, but if I do have to wait and can't do anything about it - what's the point in getting all annoyed? You have to wait, that's just the way it is. There are worse things in life. If I expect to wait a long time, like sitting on a train or in the waiting room of a doctor's office, then I bring my kindle. Gives me something to do, which, while not productive since I read fiction, does make the waiting a lot more enjoyable.
@Lucky102797 жыл бұрын

This is so interesting. I have ADHD, and I've often described the 'temporal distortion' that it causes to folks without the disorder, with varying results. I always carry with me a physical activity (a small knitting project, usually) and a distraction (audiobook, videos on phone) because otherwise, even a traffic light can feel like eternity. With them, and my attention having an anchor, I don't mind waiting at all. I actually had one woman tell me, on a commuting train ride, that she didn't have the patience or time to knit. I told her that if I didn't knit, I'd be pulling my hair out. And that two 45 minute train rides was really a lot of time. She didn't bother me after that :-P

Once in middle school (or maybe earlier, my memory isn't so good) we had something where the students brought in food to share. My mom prepared a large amount with many containers and as a result an entire paper bag was devoted to holding them. After I got off the bus at the end of the day the bag ripped and I, knowing I wouldn't be able to carry it home in such a state, decided to sit in the grass and wait for my mom (she got off work at about the same time and would often pick me up at the end of the day). It felt like I was only sitting there, doing effectively nothing more than relaxing (and definitely not thinking) for 15-20 minutes, but I later learned it had been closer to an hour and a half. I guess sometimes I can simply turn off the part of my mind which gets bored.

interestingly here in japan waiting is looked upon favorably. they feel a long wait adds to the value of whatever they receive at the end, kind of like how the view is always nicer after a long climb. the converse is also true, and they frown upon anything being done quickly. if you work efficiently and finish a job in less time, the comment you're most likely to get is "finished already? you can't have done it well then, go and do it again." it's the reason japanese craftspeople are so revered here. they could do the same job much faster without compromising quality at all, but adding time adds value to their work, so it's undesirable to do so.

Because I had to wait for my sister which shes from different class, she even is like 20 minutes later than me. That covers the time perception part. But there's also the Unnecessary suffering. When you focus too much on what you'd rather be doing, you are constantly presented with the conflict of wanting something and not having it, triggering frustration. If you instead accept the fact that you are waiting, and you'll be there until you're not, and guide your attention to something else, then there is no conflict, and you can relax. Just don't fixate on the unsolvable conflict. That's my method, at least.

I have a tendency to dissociate, and during long waits, I end up doing that. It gives the illusion of extreme patience, but actually I just have no awareness of what's going on around me. Imagine turning on two TVs at full blast and trying to concentrate. That's my life. --- Now. Imagine someone like me being told I have 15 minutes just to rest and watch one movie. On Monday the ramps were closed at the Minneapolis airport because of a thunder storm. Our plane loaded on time, but we must have been in a long line to take off. We waited for 30 minutes to hear from the pilot about the situation. He finally announced that we were 4th in line to take off. If he had explained why we were waiting so long, (most people didn't know that the ramps were closed) and where we were in the line, I'm sure people would have been more sympathetic and relaxed. Instead people were complaining. The flight attendant did nothing but stare at us. I spent my time trying to calm my mother in law because she was sure we were never going to take off. A little bit of communication goes a long way. Our flight time? 15 minutes. It takes longer to load the plane that it does to flight to my city.

Easy one - I'm bored and often in a rush, and if I can't have fun I at least want to get work done rather than waste my life waiting in line. Or I'm hungry and want to eat asap. In any case I don't do well waiting in lines. I sway side to side a lot, shift my weight, and sigh.

I do get anxious and stressed. To combat this, I will usually before I sit down to wait, ask about a rough time estimate. "About how long do you think it will before I'm seen?" "OK, thank you."

This is why I used to carry a paperback book in my pocket but nowadays all i need is my phone, any one of a number of games I play are likely ready for the next batch of missions or whatever, so i always have something to do. Only regret is I don't get as much reading done as I used to, heh.

Maybe that is why i have to watch something while i do something boring, like washing the dishes, i have too much a ttention to track my time doing it.
