I have studied music for 35 years. I have two degrees in music. Throughout my lifetime, I estimate that close to $150k was spent on my music education, development, degrees, etc. So, yes, I want to serve. Yes, I want to share my gifts, and I do that by helping with the cleanup after the potluck, with folding programs in the office, etc. But when it comes to music, I charge. Full price, even for my community. They do not get some kind of discount. I have a family, I have student loans. I have been taken advantage of in the past, and it was painful for me and the community. When you don’t pay musicians, you put those members in a very vulnerable, difficult position. I would even argue that it is spiritually manipulative. Please consider this when you ask professional musicians to play for free. When you ask professional educators to teach for free. When you ask professional clergy to preach for free. It’s all the same... So unless I am paid, I sit back, close my eyes, and rest in the service being led by those who love playing music as non-professionals.

Read your Bible. What you say is unbiblical. We are commanded to provide the need of those who feed us the Gospel of Jesus Christ. No where in scripture are we commanded to provide the needs of musicians. it can’t be found except only in the man made traditions of the church. That complaint only comes from musicians who’s not there to serve but to get a paycheck.

So sad that musicians pay exorbitant tuition fees to study music only to be told to ‘serve’ at church. No wonder we are resorting to secular music, where they respect and honour the service of musicians. We have families to feed too. Not everyone studied engineering or law or medicine etc. Pay us!!
@rwren
@rwren 10 ай бұрын
So the purpose for playing music in church is in order to gain respect and honor? I thought conversely it was to respect and honor the One who gave us the talent to begin with. Do you ever volunteer in other ways? If you serve at a soup kitchen do you ask for a paycheck? FYI: there are many with other trainings and skills who volunteer their abilities and time to the church - ie.. elders and deacons and they do it for no pay. Speaking as someone who has played keys and led worship for 36 years, I can say without hesitation that we have the choice to not use our gifts and talents without pay, but does that give as the joy of serving as part of the body? I can assure you that if you will only play for the church when a paycheck is involved that the church leaders would prefer you go play somewhere outside the church. If playing as a profession is important to you, then by all means do it to the glory of God. Blessings to you.

in 1st chronicles ch 9, it talks about how musicians and singers were EMPLOYED by the temple. In Nehemiah ch 13, Nehemiah got angry with the people in the temple because they were not paying the musicians and singers. As a result of this, The musicians had to go out in the field and work for money because they were not getting paid. @@Rk-zp4yr I'm not making a radical statement. All I'm saying is that we need to be careful that we see the difference between things simply described in the bible and other things actually prescribed. There is no command in the bible to pay musicians for playing in church, simply a description that at one time they were. If churches want to pay their musicians that's totally their call, it's not sinful of them to but it's also not sinful of others not to. Do you get what I'm saying? Our context is totally different, and there is no biblical command to be observed. It's entirely a matter of context and conscience.

@@Rk-zp4yr no brother, you're making the application towards musicians. The verse does not speak of musicians at all and Paul's particularly comparing himself with teachers. If you want to contest application then that's fine but we need to be clear that we're seeking to apply a principle as there is no direct command, as musicians are not listed at all. If you want to make the point you're seeking to make then I'd limit it to those who work professionally as musicians as Paul in that passage compares himself with soldiers and plowman, both full-time roles, not hobbies. I'm not saying don't pay people in your church. I'm just saying that these verses don't draw a direct line as you suggest. A brief exegesis of the passage shows something quite different to what most church musicians do - work full time elsewhere and then give 3-4 hours a week in service, as do many other volunteers roles e.g. the sound and multimedia crew.

In our small church (300) our model for the worship team is voluntary. It works in our church because God has provided; we are blessed with abundant musicians who desire to serve in worshiping God, not to entertain. Many churches however may not have ample musicians, and if outside musicians are needed, they should be paid. What works for one church may not work for another. If the focus is on God, He will provide. If the focus is on producing a show, it will not bear fruit of the Holy Spirit.

I've played for several churches, and it can be very challenging. music is a craft, and not everybody can do what we do. it involves a lot of practice, arrangement, and planning. most people only see the finished product and have no clue as to how much effort is put into it. musicians have bills, and other financial responsibilities just like everyone else. the doctor gets paid, the barber gets paid, the pastor gets a salary, why not the musicans??? I just quit playing at a church because of this very reason.

He's the one preaching a funeral etc. Outside of FULL TIME church staff, the church carries out her mission by folks who volunteer of their time and talents. They do so joyfully and willingly. Anyone who is unwilling to serve the church unless he/she gets paid should definitely not serve the church. God doesn't want your begrudging musicianship.

That didn't match the title completely. I agree a pastor should be the first to get paid, but musicians should not be neglected if the church can afford it next. I have attended churches where a guest speaker fills in and gets a check, the worship leader who ministers 3 to 4 services a week gets nothing all year?? This is not the right way. Sure let someone start volunteer for a year or even a few years, but after that something if the church can afford should be given. Even if some gas money. I definitely agree. I've been a drummer for 30 years, and never got a penny from any of the churches I played. Worship leaders are all trying to imitate all the "megachurches" music. That has increased the burden, and the need for more preparation to play the songs. I myself, will put 10+ hours practicing each week for the sets. All the investments musicians put on their craft, and the countless hours of practice is mostly ignored. It seems like church leaders use the famous phrase "you are doing it for God" thus justifying not paying any musician a dime.

If you dont pay the worhsip leader you don't give them time to be great because they have to work full time. Coming from a long time music enthusiast, most churches out there have worship that does not do anything for me. I don't think people realize how good they could have it if things were different. People would fall in love with Jesus even more. Music is just as powerful as the message and for some people music is why they come to church. And the real reason for not paying pianists at a church is because the church loves to use and take advantage of people. This is why I quit and left the church. That is called using people for what you want. You have to understand that a pianist of a church does a lot and you put in many hours of work for the church and the church all they do is talk smack about you and don’t pay you a cent. This is the thing that really bugs me about the church. The church has non valid reasons for what they do and the reasons they have are not valid. They don’t make a ton of sense at all. This is the problem with churches everything is all volunteer and how are you suppose to keep running if you don’t get payed. Oh that is easy give the pastor all our money so he can go and by a new lexis and hello. This is what they want for sure. Now I am a big super star because the church gave the money. For us working pianists though the church could give a care about you as a hard working musician so you are left with nothing after doing all that work. So basically you are left screwed and the church is laughing at you. This is why it is hard to find pianists in churches because no one wants to do something without getting payed. That is sacrificing your time for someone else and they don’t give a care about you.not a cent not a thank you or nothing. This is why I left the church. I got so sick and tired of all the girly gossip and getting taken advantage of. Plus I can work outside gigs and get payed for it. All the church says is oh it is good for the body well, they are not going to tell you but they are using you and taking advantage of you when they say these things. This is why churches don’t keep musicians. We don’t want to come and bee a part of something and not get payed for it.

I think churches that have this type of thinking are the problems to the body of Christ and the excellence the body of Christ deserves!! This is a joke !

I hired a musician once. He showed up without his instrument. I thought what on earth is going on. Then he said you get what you pay for. Lol

The only time an advanced or pro player should play for free is when he is trying to get hired or auditioned. If you play for free, you ain’t a pro yet. Sorry, professionals don’t practice for free. Pro means you have to live off what you do, pay taxes and retire from it at some point. You are a pro, you should have contracts and gigs lined up. If you need a manager get one. If you can’t find one hit me up, but you have to take yourself serious if you want to live off music and have invested time and effort. This is common sense.

So you will pay a plumper 75$ to come to the church to GIVE AN ESTIMATE then pay him/her 500$ to fix the problem because their professionals but won’t pay QUALITY TALENT OR PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS mmmmmm. I digress

I’m sick and tired of the way the church mistreats musicians. No matter what you do they’re never satisfied, and they require more, more, and more. 3 plus songs per service, new music every week, and then you have to constantly deal with whiny choir members. Who wants to tell you how to do your job but have no clue about what all goes into it. I want to do this song ,I don’t like this song, well why don’t you play it like this, well why don’t you sing it like this. And we really don’t get support from the pastors because the pastors will take everyone else’s side over yours. Oh yes we need to be compensated.

Personally as a church drummer I don’t even feel right charging a church to play cause I understand it’s more for God, it’s different than playing secular BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT y’all got me bent if only pastors, prophets, etc get paid more than the musicians. Like they should know it’s for God and not just money too. And if that’s the case than I’m sorry the musicians deserve more money cause it’s SUPER TIME CONSUMING preparing the music if u want it done right.

Turn your check or gratuity in Pastor..it's not Biblical to labor truely called ministries and neglect thier practical needs. Just go with congregational singing and no one able to read music if that's your take

If the music director gets paid so should every member of the music team it’s not right got played for many years and now that I’m older left the band not worth it anymore got a studio job now people are great to work with and I’m finally getting paid should have done this 25 years ago the church never even called or thanked me for all the many years of service so much for caring for one another my advice is the church better start caring for the musicians or else everybody will start quitting another words enough is enough im done

I have been involved in Biblical Research for 47 years. I don't have all the answers but what I know, I know very well. In the book of Luke, Jesus was giving his directions to the seventy he was sending out to witness. In verse 7 he included this phrase: "the labourer is worthy of his hire." I don't know if all the musicians I've heard are worthy of getting paid but some choir directors and the such sure seem to earn their keep. Quite frankly, most churches I've visited have turned the service over to musicians that are self-righteous, egotistical folks that ruin the service. They sing songs that are loud and focus on their so-called talent as if God should move over and give them a throne next to Jesus Christ. It sickens me when they act like I should join in with their songs no one else knows. Does anyone study the Bible anymore? Why do we sing? I would suggest taking a hard look at the question. When a congregation sings "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" or "At Calvery" it reinforces the believing of the congregation. When some fool gets up and sings a song no one knows, there is no belieiving reinforced. What's that verse at the end of I Corinthians 14? "Let all things be done decently and in order" What is decent about singing a song that is confusing. I visited a church this year in which the minister handed the service over to his musicisan. It was an absolute disaster and he still does it. As a minister, when I run a fellowship, I am responsible to God for everything in that service. To hand over the reigns to someone who destroys the spiritual temperature of the room shouldn't happen. The books of Timothy, Titus and Philemon are written to the ministers in the one body, the called out (ekklesia in the Greek). We would do well to take heed to the instruction. As for paying musicians, let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

No, they should not be paid. Only the Pastor or church minister is supposed to be paid. The rest, tell them to get a job or start business. They should sing and/play the instruments for the Lord.
