Some Jamaicans who have immigrated elsewhere are much to blame for the expectations of people living abroad. There are people who go home, having maxed out their credit card or borrowed money, and show off. They give the impression that the streets are paved with gold elsewhere.

Personally, as I yardie myself, I see it from both ways as well. Right now, I am in agreement with you guys as I have decided to stop sending money to anyone ah yard since this year. When i did the math on how much i sent down last year, I CRIED. The crazy thing is that right now, I can't even call one of those persons I sent money to and ask them for some money.

As a Caribbean National, I send a barrel home to me family 4X per year. I know it is extremely helpful, especially to the elderly family members, who exist on limited funds. Basic toiletries, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant etc cost 6 X the price on my Island than in the USA, With that said if I can aid my family save or spend on something else - I send barrels. I coupon to defray costs.

@RAINBOW-lx6wd first find a shipping company that ship barrel to the destination you want it to go ask how much to ship. Then ypu purchase a barrel and start buying stuff and start to pack the barrel when it's finish packing called back the shipping company to come collect the barrel pay fee get your receipt.

I sent two barrels just from couponing. My family really appreciated it especially because I’ve not been in the USA for long. One barrel contained personal items and household stuff like gain, tide, dove, deodorant etc. The other had food items .I always watched the couponing videos and learned how to do it so that I could help my family.

Every one situation is different i guess. So i have my mom and daughter living in Jamaica and every paycheck i got every two weeks im excited to send money home to them praise god for his awesome blessings and for providing me with health and strength I’m eternally grateful. Other family members I send them money like a few times for the year.what I’m extremely grateful for is that as a black woman i came here found a white husband who if i don’t put my feet down he would send two times what we’re sending he’s the best. So if you can help out someone please do so. When you can and give what you can afford. The average two bedroom apartment in the USA IS $1200.00 per month. This does not include utilities. It is not easy living in the USA. Taking the train standing on a platform for a long time in the winter time. Paying back student loans trying to make ends meet. It is not easy.

I come from a really poor family in the US and I've worked hard to break the cycle of poverty and am blessed to live comfortably. I'm disciplined with money so that I can also retire comfortably and have money for a rainy day. Some of my relatives have complained that it's not fair I have a lot more money, and I point out that I worked 3 jobs in college and graduated with honors, spent my 20s working 60+ hours weekly, then went back to grad school while working and again graduated with honors, now in my 30s with a great income and am once again taking classes for another salary advancement. And all the schooling I've done, I've had scholarships and grants and paid the rest out of pocket. I have to let them know I make more simply because I've worked harder, and I deserve it! Not to mention, I live on a budget still and I always will, I don't just throw money away. If someone wants to "learn how to fish" I'll help them with advice, but I'm not interested in "giving away fish" for a day

We just stop the foolishness (well some of us) because we know they had the same opportunities but didn’t want to make the sacrifices! They think opportunities mean easy and it’s not! It is a cultural thing. In the Caribbean we help others. Yes… some ppl can over do it…. But sharing when we have it, is what we do. Not everyone will get the opportunity to travel abroad to “foreign”. Lots of us go back and show off and pretend like we have it… meanwhile we are having it rough. So yes ppl will ask. We are not the only ppl culturally who operates like this. The Mexicans, Chinese, Phillipinoes etc all send money home to help family and their community. The barrel was a thing in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s when things were harder to get in the islands. Now it is easier to get certain items. Yes…. When oil, washing soap etc is purchased in bulk it is cheaper. But as I said certain items were harder to get and barrels were cheaper to ship then. And as a caribbean person, you never know what can happen in a country where you were not born…. So we tend to help our community and family because we never know when we can be shipped back. It is also not everywhere or everyone believes that Americans have money. Ppl can see clearly the struggles black Americans have in the US especially.

It’s a cultural thing period. My family lives well in Ja and my Aunt who is the matriarch of the family will pack 4 barrels and ship. Please note that all the non perishables etc are sold on the shelves of supermarkets. No it’s the fact that the items that are in the barrels are divided or shared with families, friends and in between! I don’t believe shipping of food items back is a big deal now. This was a practice done in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Right, I send a barrel every year I start pack from Jan and when it's full I will send it, I will definitely send money back home to my family but I am not gonna go broke to send it. However the boasting of our people and hyping makes people see you with stuff and want it, it's the illusion we put on as of we have it going on to send. Also thr credit cards option we have over here makes things a bit easier and we over do it with hyping but they don't know we using credit card that we have to pay back!!!. One thing I won't do is struggle to send money back home

I don’t get the barrel thing either. However, I think some people start packing a barrel in June-July to send it home for Christmas. I think sending the money is better. You pay to fill the barrel, you pay to ship it, they have to pay to pick it up and then pay someone to transport the barrel to your home. I’m Jamaican and I really don’t get it either.

Another comment said that sending barrels started in the 70s and 80s when it was cheaper to send a barrel and the items that were being sent were much costlier on the islands than in the U.S. I think nowadays sending barrels makes less sense if the items are available on the islands much cheaper than in the U.S. The only thing with sending money is you never know what people will spend it on, they could gamble, buy drugs, etc so you have to be sending money to responsible people.

What some people do is buy thing when it on sale and pack the barrel if you spend $500 to pack a barrel that $500 cannot buy the amount of thing that's in the barrel !! A jumbo barrel can hold up to 80 pounds of rice , 5 or mor bottles of oils plus many more things . Some thing you do not need to sent . Some family need it and need the help,some don't they will just try to drain you .

Great conversation! Just came across your channel. The Barrel situation, back in the day, yes! It was more affordable to ship food and clothing down to Jamaica. However, the cost of living have increased so much that the cost of living is on par with the cost of living in Jamaica. I spent $300 dollars on groceries in Jamaica, the same amount I would spend in the US for the everyday items. The cost to clear a barrel in Jamaica is an arm and a leg smh.

The practice of sending money and shipping barrels began back in the 1950’s when people from the Caribbean islands left their country in search of work. Some of them left behind spouses and children or parents to raise their children in their absence. They would then send money and ship barrels back to take care of the families back home. This practice has continued over the years, leading people to believe that all “foreigners” are rich and have no idea how hard we “foreigners” must work to attain what we have. There are those that are in great need, but on the other hand, there are those that feel entitled and their hands are always stretched out, palms out. This is a hot topic for many.

Kotonya you are right about the barrel. We have stopped sending from the UK. It’s not cheaper than getting in Jamaica as to the receiver it’s free. You can’t get cheaper than free. No point comparing name brands as most Jamaicans don’t buy the same brands you would at home. The argument about sending money and the people them then might spend it on other things is nonsense. If you send grown arse people money for food and they spend it on something else, then that is on them and it is them fi suffer. If you send money again for that reason then you need to have a talk with yourself. Jamaicans are also buying clothes online like in foreign now so no need to send clothing . And when you go there just observe all the good good phones everyone has. That tells you everything.

I agree with you Katonya. When I lived in Jamaica I never got a barrel from overseas. I live in Canada now and I don't send barrels down because I would rather send the money for my relatives to buy the groceries because I really don't see how it is cheaper from the barrel. Sometimes you even have to send the money to clear the barrel. It does not make sense. I will bring a few gifts in my luggage when I visit. If the person visit me, I will buy few things for them but sending a barrel is not something that I would ever do. It is only cheaper if you can pack the barrel with free groceries😂

If u have kids back home it makes sense to send barrel because I’ll give example I want to send my kids a small box the size of shoe box with 4 outfits and two small shoes for my step kids they say it cost 100$ to ship and when it reach the mother will have to pay 100 or more to clear it from customs . Barely anything is made there except maybe food items so everything is imported it makes more sense I send barrel for 150$ and they clear it for 50$ and I can put rice and can foods and many thing’s clothes etc

Packing a barrel and sending it home to your family.. it is an old tradition 😂 It made sense back in the 90s and early 2000 because things will much cheaper.But now custom fees Just to clear the barrel is way too expensive.It doesn't make sense any more..And things are more modernized you can buy everything in the caribbean now..

What you must remember is that sometimes the person who is sending the barrel will even send the money to clear it because they will say they cant afford to & they will just sort out the transportation themselves so at the end of the day it doesn't cost them anything really

I understand your confusion and it is valid - it is partially a cultural thing. Also people buy the items on sale and when the products arrive in the Caribbean they resell the products and make a profit. For some people that is a business. But there are also the lazy ones who just want you to send the barrel and also for you to pay on the other end for them to retrieve the barrel. There was a time - many years ago - when the items were not available in that overseas county/island so it made sense to ship. Born in Caribbean - so I know what I am talking about.

We agreed to send a certain amount every month to my husband's mom when he came over on a K1 visa. Then his step dad passed away and prices gone up, so he has increased the money he sends. Yet each month something else comes up, so we can't seem to get back to our agreed upon amount. He's the only son, so there is a lot responsibility on him. I respect him for what he's doing, but this adds up and is really slowing our plans.

Truth is, if you like the people in your lives, don’t loan them money. Loaning people money is the quickest way to lose friendship. If I have it to give, I will give but only if I think you really need it. I know Jamaicans in America who send money to Jamaica to pay peoples utility bills. I know people who send barrels to Jamaica only to have the receiver requested the funds from the sender to clear the barrel. We grew up poor in Jamaica but as children, we don’t really feel it because if my mother didn’t cook, we ate dinner next door. We sometimes went to school without breakfast and no lunch money, so I know how hard it is for some parents in Jamaica. But when we came to America the only way we can eat is to pay for it ourselves. We can’t go to the next door neighbor like in Jamaica. In America, you learn to value every dollar you make and it’s not easy to just give it away. There’s a saying if you give a hungry man a dollar, he’ll have food for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, he’ll have food for life. When you rob a bank or win the lottery, you can give away the money, but if you put your blood, sweat and tears into making that money, you earn the rights to be as stingy asf.

It is absolutely way cheaper to send a barrel to Jamaica than buying the food there. Yes some people may send money to buy the food instead but i highly doubt that they are going to send $150,000 JMD to say go buy food. We have been sending barrels for years and if it cost us 800-1000 CAD dollars to pack the barrel and ship it,, we normally pay about 40.000JMD to clear depending on what is in the barrel. No they don't charge per item and is a set price they charge for clearing food. There is no way you can use $200,000 to buy food to serve for a year in Jamaica. When we shipped is once a year and it serves for the entire year and we gave away from it. When sending barrel you have to be smart and know what to send , don't send barrel for show, think about the need and what works in your every day life. Barrell does work.

The barrel is not charged by weight it's a fixed price it works out much better I don't just put food, I put the things I might need that is much cheaper here, so when I saw the price in Jamaica, I was like it was astronomically high, so for example curtain rods, so it all depends on what you are doing.

Sending a barrel is sort of Sam’s Club / COSTCO alternative. When you buy in bulk you save more and it last longer. In Jamaica their low finances can only afford to buy a likkle flour and likkle rice. Speaking from experience. I’m an American woman whose story mirrors yours tremendously. 🙏🏾❤️

Katonya/Kemar, Don't feel bad or obligated to give money to anyone. My husband is Jamaican and I am an American and one of the conversations we had in the beginning of our relationship was regarding loaning or giving money out. I don't loan money to anyone, how are we going to thrive if we constantly give when asked? That is a crab in the barrel mentality that plagues the black community and I do not fall for it..

Watched your video and read many of the comments. TRIGGERING topic. Metaphorically speaking…with our church, we decided how much we would give and to whom. That keeps us grounded. Those extra “giving” times they have at church are to emotionally evoke giving from those who don’t regularly give…so we don’t feel any guilt if we don’t participate every time the church asks for gifts (offerings). We know we give regularly so no guilt felt when we don’t give to every cause. Hope this makes sense 😜

Back in the early 90's a friend of my mine came home to Jamaica on vacation. He was flashing cash and riches here there and everywhere, his suitcases had that new cloths smell. Man rented big car and stayed at high-end resorts. One would think he was Bill Gates. Man gave away all his cloths as he gave the impression it was easy to come by. While in Jamaica money was not a problem for him. Then I heard after the vacation ended, he was back in Queens NY, begging people to help him pay the rent for his basement apartment. I never laugh so hard, even now we still laugh at him.

Hi guys I send barrel back home to my family all the time the money you spend to pack , ship and clear the barrel will last long with the food item cause sometimes you get the item cheap abroad but it you send that money to buy groceries it won't last not even a month sometimes that my experience and i ship from the UK

Good conversation I have a lot of Jamaican friends here and they always send stuff back home or even Haitians I donate clothing etc and help as much as possible. But Kamar is like myself don’t share feelings but at my age now I learned to let it go cus it builds up and can explode at not so good time. Send the money when you can. You have to buy the food, pack the barrel , pay for them to pick up the barrel..send the money they could buy what they want...don't stress it or over think it.

I am a witness of sending barrels and have done the math work. It is not cheaper. I now tell them I will send the money and you buy it.. It ends up 3 times more so when you divide it the product could be bought there..

First time watching, like the reasoning. The barrel thing is more like a developed culture, which made sense a few years ago but due to economic changes & taxations it really doesn’t help the household greatly anymore. You have to do the maths and send specific items that create large savings.

The idea of the barrel back dates to the times when island folk or any immigrant for that matter, would assist their families in whatever way possible. Its not just a practice exclusive to Caribbean. They would ship usually food stuff, clothing and other items to alleviate cost for their families back home or to help them enjoy amenities that are not available. Back when it first started, I am sure that it made more economic sense. The practice just continued even if it is more expensive to do so now. Another reason people still do it is because they are limited in what they can bring when they do travel home or they are not able to travel to their homeland just yet but want to help. There will always be people that take advantage of situations, its up to the person being asked the favor or fielding the request to decide how they will respond.

As a jamaican i send money back home but only when i am comfortable and my bills are paid. I send barrels regular though, i normally start pack from early in the year and as the barrell full i send it..... but ONLY when i do have the extra

I’m sooooo glad y’all doing this video breaking it down. U can help once in a while. However, it’s a slippery slope as some have no conscience once u give, they just keep coming. They don’t know u as a Doctor, Lawyer or Indian chief, a lot of them friends/family have no conscience! They evil, they don’t consider that u have bills too. They don’t even have to come to see, they all have a phone in their hand, google rents/mortgage in NY, SC, Fl etc. I’ve had every scenario u guys r talking about and changed my number and the people who have it I tell them don’t give it out. The minute u don’t have it or straight up say no, yuh mean, yuh selfish, yuh bad mind🙄 The fact that u guys blog and take vacations, oh my God u guys r TARGETS! They don’t know ur budget and they don’t care! I’m up north where it snows like crazy, I want to give those selfish so and so a visa to come here in the middle of winter. They don’t consider that u get up in the mornings and u have to go out in rain, snow or sleet to earn a dollar. Katonya girl let no be ur best friend, if u have extra and want to give a gift once in a while. Please don’t let these people see pinto ur marriage , unfortunately it happens. Ur story will be, oh she rule him and she’s wicked she don’t want him to send money home. HE HAS BILLS WHERE HE LAY HIS HEAD! I haven’t watched y’all in a minute, so here goes😊 when u start building, get ur money go down, let them give a list, go buy the materials negotiate the cost of the job. Then u sit there for a week or 2 and watch all ur materials used in a timely manner. Come back save up and do it again. Other wise they will tell u 20 bags of cement and use 10 and steal 10, they’ll tell u it’s a 2 wk job and drag it out asking for more materials and money! Good luck y’all❤️🇯🇲🇺🇸
