We did a John Suscovich style tractor which is very similar and I agree. Its versatility on a homestead is invaluable. We have used it as a grow out shelter for younger layers, quarantine for new goats on the farm, before adding them to our pasture and for broilers. I'm wanting to try them as a little green house this fall, when all our animals have settled in for winter.

Just built a hoop coop chicken tractor for my broilers. All the reasons you listed are spot on. Looking forward to putting layer hens in it after broilers are done. Next year, may even try turkeys after broilers are out. Also may put it out in early spring with clear plastic and use as a greenhouse. Or over summer with pots of berries inside as it is bird proof. The hoop coop chicken tractor is so versatile! And as someone who has had back surgery recently, I love that it is easy to get into to care for chickens and feed. Love my hoop coop tractor!

After seeing Dan's "Grass-fed Homestead" cattle panel greenhouse, and your chicken tractor I am sold on this being even better than the John S chicken tractor. One can easily customize this to have perches, semi-built in feeders and waterers, and even nesting boxes. I like that you figured out the old use a 2x4 to roll up the sides with trick.

I love the versatility of your chicken tractors and to me they just seem to be generally more accessible whilst still being readily mobile and also feel a lot less claustrophobic. In case it helps, rather than cutting each slice of zucchini in half, I find it easier to cut the zucchini length ways in half or quarters first and then hold it together and slice it up :)

I was thinking about making something similar to it. You might want to add some hooks for a tie strap if you ever get some strong storms so you can anchor it down. We have a lot of strong storms in Texas and I thinking it would get flipped over and the chickens killed or scattered to hell and back. I was wanting somethin light weight but not on a car trailer style for layers. Something easy to move by hand but wouldn't get destroyed by high winds. Not sure what style. I love the fact that if you quit chickens you can switch over to raising plants in them. No waste.

I like your chicken tractor and how you can just walk into standing up. We just built one like Joel Salatin for our little chicks. My husband is planning on making a stationary coop for the wintertime. I have seen them on KZbin where you can attach the chicken tractor to a stationary coop that the hens can nest in. Also, people are building the coop part of it with vinyl flooring for easy cleaning and nesting boxes on the outside for easy access. We haven't decided what we are doing yet for when our hens start laying. We usually follow what Justin Rhodes is doing, but are open for ideas like yours. I love that you can use it as a greenhouse also. Now to see if my husband will build it.

Do you have a plan for that hoop tractor? I would especially like to know how to make that door. We made a hoop coop like this but the cattle panels are cut in half, so they’re not that tall. We have to crawl in, but it was good for meat babies. It doesn’t have wheels either and we had to prop up a dog kennel door with cinder blocks on the one end. We couldn’t figure out how to do that. I would love to make what you made. We used hardware cloth, but, that there looks perfect. Especially since I will be ordering more chicks this spring to add color to the basket. Did you use this as a brooder as well? Or move them there when their feathers came in? Also, how did you apply your greenhouse plastic.

I have been watching your show. I am 82 years old and raised 5 kids, horses, goats. chickens, rabbits, sheep, you name it on the do-it-yourself method. Would you like a comment or two? When I would make cookies, I baked them in a sheet pan and cut them apart later into different shapes. The children wondered why they couldn't have round cookies like their friends.I told them, round cookies took too much time. The garden kept producing an abundance of zucchini. Ah ha, round cookies. I cut the zucchini into 1/4 inch rounds. Beat up a couple of eggs, added salt and cinnamon for flavor. Dipped the rounds into the egg mixture, then into a breading layer of wheat germ on both sides. Arranged the rounds on a sheet pan and baked them until crispy. The kids burst into the kitchen, home on the school bus, smelling the cinnamon smell as they arrived. I opened the oven. ROUND COOKIES, they chanted. Wonderful way to use extra zucchini.

I like your chicken tractors for the same reasons. Ease of access, still lightweight to move, chickens, ducks, turkeys, or greenhouse. Versatility, is essential on a homestead. When slicing your zucchini, slice in half lengthwise, then lay them flat side by side, and cut into smaller pieces. They are more stable on the flat, and easier to chop small. When sauteing with onions. add onions first, stir to coat with oil, add garlic, stir, and cook onions until they start to become translucent, and soften. At this point you can add your zucchini, which don't need as long to cook. Keep an eye on them, don't let them burn, burnt onion and garlic are bitter. This is a good method when cooking onions with softer veggies, like zucchini. The onions have time to cook down, and soft veggies don't become mushy. The longer onions cook the sweeter they get. Something tells me you're going to need a lot of different recipes for zucchini.

I really like your 'chicken tractor(s)' design! I have been researching on KZbin, poultry publications, and units that are already constructed for sale. Your design is my pick for our homestead, it is the most versatile for ALL types of fowl. I am starting my homesteading at an older age than most and having to bend over to perform anything is highly undesirable! I have been thinking, "why doesn't Al use the Kubota for moving the chicken tractors"? You answered that question in this video, you can see more and have better control of what is happening to your 'Trex's', than you would from the seat of the 'bota'. I can't wait to see your design 'close up' at the Hand Hewn Farm (3) day Hog Harvesting Class! We love you guys God Bless.

A favorite way to eat zucchini is to cut them into bit size pieces, place on a large baking sheet, then lightly spritz with olive oil, salt and pepper. Next bake in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes or until tender. Neat design. The reasoning behind Salatin’s method is to max out your capacity. In a 10x12 he has 75 birds. Takes 1 minute to move. The $ is in the time you spend. The cost is in being there. I get that this can be like a brooder as well, I think for efficiency though, having a brooder set up like Salatin’s where they are doing a mass amount of chicks all together & then 75 of them per pen, would yield better results. Have you tried the Salatin tractor? If so what were your thoughts on it?

One thing I like to do with zucchini is to slice them lengthwise into thin planks (just a little bit thicker than 1/8 inch) lightly salt them and let them sit on a single layer on a rack for a couple hours. . .this draws extra water out of them. Here is the best zuchinni casserole; Not healthy but now and then it is ok; it is layered with 3 layers; the first is simmered zuchinni slices and sliced onions; simmer just til tender crisp; second layer is a can of cream of chicken soup and a large container of sour cream; the next layer is a pack of original pepperidge farm stuffing mix plus 1 whole stick of melted butter; start with the stuffing and end with the stuffing; bake at 350 for about an hour; til the liquids are bubbling up through the top layer; omg you will love this; you can also make it and freeze it prior to baking;

Whatever works for you is what you should use. The one point that you made that should convince everyone you are making the correct choice is that you have multiple uses for the chicken tractor. Saves resources for other things you need. Nothing bugs me more than seeing things sit around unused for 11 months a year until needed for one job for a short spell. A small or fledgling homestead really cannot afford to do that. Great video, and BTW, I make zukes, onions, and garlic for my kids all the time, we love it. Works with yellow squash too!

Great, you've found something that works for YOU, what Joel does works for him, I just found your attitude overwhelmed everything else.. tell everyone, without aspersions that this smaller scale option is good for you, up until the 9:00 mark where you started cooking I was completely unhappy with your video. If you're not a commercial farmer this makes sense, Joel's works for him because that's the largest size/cheapest coop to build that you can drag manually. BOTH are excellent at what they do,FOR what they do, right ?
@johnchase44085 жыл бұрын
There was no attitude or "aspersions". You're awfully delicate to be getting butthurt over Joel Salatin. Maybe you have a bromance type man crush. Then move them to some moist soil in a small pot. I keep the pot in a clear bag to maintain humidity until they are growing well, then out to the garden. I do the same with celery, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, etc.

I do like that chicken tractor...have to build a new one for our place in the next couple weeks...might borrow a few ideas.....oh....watching your dog running around the coop....ever had trouble with the dog getting at your birds? I'd be giving him/her a big ol NO!! We had troubles with our German Sheps at first...till we learned NO around the chicks....great vid!!

Anyone else notice him dropping the coop ramp on that ducks head?!? Lololol

Those baby chicks soon learn when you are getting ready to move the chicken tractor and will move to the front. I've seen several people move them and they always run to the front....as soon as they learn that when you lift up the rope, it's gonna move. lol

Can I make a little house like this but let it be permanent? I could use tarps that I roll up and down for shade as well as situate the coop under a tree. I can create the run just outside the door. Can I do that? Because these people in California are spending several hundred dollars for cute coops that look like Swiss chalets. our only challenge is heat and farrel cats. and dogs.
