They bring their kids along because criminal gangs are less likely to harm families with children. In reality, it’s nothing like the noble reasons they boast about in their videos. I hope they do well after such trials and tribulations, but the reality is, if you ever been to the States, based on their skill sets and naivety , it will be an uphill battle in the USA, more so I guess vs their hometown. There is something odd about their recounting of their story, why di the parents send their daughter to an illegal "Church" school when the education system , like where they are from , Cheng Du, are a relatively well developed region with well funded free public schools. I feel again it is religiosity at play here, warping what could have been a good life in China. It does seem the family is relatively well off judging by how they could afford many amenities at the start of the journey. And at the same time, the parents did not once mention economic hardship at home... the power of Hollywood and word of mouth, I guess, chasing the "American Dream". So this was documented before the current context... I think America is headed towards a repeat of the "yellow peril" era, due to their policies and politicians. Its going to get tough for such Chinese immigrants

@@亦先汪 Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, it's his choice, but I suppose his blind faith and gamble got the family there. On the other hand though, he could well had imperiled his family, like the corpse they reported to have seen. Its definitely blind faith and dumb luck. I guess, based on your opinion, from your comment, you also agree that his decisions are based on poor judgement, clouded by some religious sentiment that is not grounded in reality. I bet the dad got into trouble with the authorities, not because he attended a "church" school, but because he prevented his child from attending school and getting an education. This, I recall, is illegal in China. Again, this hints of some form of serious disillusionment on part of the dad. Plenty of people in China gets a formal education, but end up still practicing Christianity, attending Church, and live a life without harassment from the authorities. It goes to suggest that, the parents must have a pretty extreme religious minded position, or a warped sense of "politics or freedom" to end up deciding to prevent a child from attending schools, and in turn go about making religion the central motivation for taking such a dangerous trek to "freedom". I watch somewhere (a video by a UK expat in China) that the government of China has no beef with Christianity and Churches, but are vehemently sensitive of any religion that has accult tendencies, or sends religious adherents against the state. I guess, the only indoctrination is reserved for the State, like any nation, USA included. If we take a deeper analysis into this family's story, I guess it's also a way for the family to get a "get out of jail free card to the express lane to get asylum in the USA, just by citing the "CCP" for "persecution". I'm sure the USA immigration agents would have been excited to have a case like this. Makes good propaganda out for USA. But that's said, still glad the family found their "religious freedom" in the USA and have their child in USA public schools and have some starter jobs in USA. It's clear they just didn't fit into China's "collectivism with Chinese characteristics". Most Chinese citizens who wants a different type of life and political system would have worked hard for it, and migrated the official way, but this family probably didn't have the heart, mind set or the means to do it that official way. Perhaps they're too fixated with their perceived "persecution" which sidetracks them into dangerous missions like this.

I am a foreigner who lived in Mainland China for a few years not in Hong Kong. I’ve met some people who think seriously about leaving others who are actively trying and some people who I think contemplate it quietly. Not universal, but a huge aspect of discontent is the pressure to conform (often focused around some aspect like religion, politics, social norms). You see this also in how many people who leave for the West become disillusioned because that pressure still exists just differently and I’d say substantially less. If you don’t understand it’s usually because you either naturally conform, do not mind conforming, or view it as an obviously worthwhile tradeoff. I think many comments here are missing the sincerity of these sentiments. You perceive religion as allowed, but that’s conditioned on conformance. Virtually every religiously active person I’ve met in China perceives thieve conditions as being actively adjusted depending on individual and collective action.

I know many commenting here will not understand, but I’ll try to explain as simply as possible to those who have an open mind. Christianity is “legal” only on a superficial basis in China, which is ruled by an officially atheist CCP. There largely exists two types of churches in China - the state sanctioned church and the underground church. To belong to the state sanctioned church, you must fundamentally acknowledge that the CCP government is the authority above all else, including Jesus. To belong to the underground church, you simply believe that Jesus is Lord. The CCP authorities will of course say that religious freedom exists in China and cite the large number of state sanctioned churches, without ever mentioning that many underground church leaders have experienced various forms of discrimination, hardship and even jail terms for simply trying to live faithfully according to what the Bible actually says, that God is supreme over any human government. On that basis, I completely understand the father’s desperation to get out of a country that may be wonderful for any atheist who doesn’t care, but a prison to those who to wish practise their faith freely. I don’t know if California is the best place to run to because there are other negative influences for people of faith to be aware of, but there you go…

I'm American and Christian. I'm very blessed to be to be able to practice my faith without persecution in this nation. But for foreigners coming here for economic opportunities. You better really have a serious plan because America is expensive and daily living expenses like rent, food, cars ect are outpacing wages here. Many Americans are financially struggling, let alone a foreigner with a language barrier, no work documents, even if your educated, your education may not even be accepted here in America. Putting you at the lower end of wages in this society...sometimes you may be better off where your coming from if you invest the same time and money into improving where you are in the nation your born in. Choose well.

"Your education may not be accepted here in america ..." no truer words are written. My father was a pharmacist, educated and graduated from the University of Columbia, USA but he migrated overseas for many decades before returning to the U.s.. By that time, his qualifications from the U.S. and overseas equivalents, were no longer recognized in the U.S. and he would have to retake the exams to re-qualify is he wanted his licence in the U.S. Also, my sister graduated as a medical doctor, specializing in geriatric medicine from the University of Singapore which qualifications are even recognized in the U.K. - but not in the U.S. So, someone from China with little to no english speaking background, little to no qualifications, little money, no connections, sneaking into the U.S. with no legal documents and where the hiring of illegals is actually punishable by law - wow. The thought is staggeringly amazing - these people are either delusional, foolish, naive, and gullible all wrapped up in one nice neat package - or really, really desperate - and I tend to think that they are in the former "nice, neat package". In any case, let these discover the truth for themselves. China already has far too many mouths to feed and clothe and losing a few thousand dis-satisfied malcontents, is no loss and definitely no pity or even prayers for them.

"From the frying pan into the fire" is the first thought that came to mind about this family's story, coupled by, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". They didn't talk to actual Americans who fled the U.s. to live in China and there are many of them in the larger cities. My own parents supported and went to the U.S. from Malaysia because of my father;'s fond memories of a U.S. he was educated in as a young man - in the mid-1930s and 1940s but certainly altered into an uglier side by the time the 1980s rolled around. He remembered great U.S. Presidents like FDR, but never thought that his successors would be radically different to his social policies. My father died from cancer in the U.S. - discovered too late because he didn't have enough money for regular medical checkups and he was declared "too old with pre-existing conditions" for insurance companies to want take him on and so, he had no medical insurance. This is one of the realities of living in the U.S.

If you want to migrate to the US then follow the proper procedure in becoming a naturalized citizen. Rules are there for a reason.
@SL-lz9jr5 ай бұрын
Not always. Not all rules are right or fair. As it regards immigration, I think the US can benefit from expanding its access to those from poorer backgrounds by doing a sort of job placement for the kind of jobs no American wants to do. Most US immigration policy and quotas favor those who can either pay their way in or be sponsored by family, thus ensuring they will not be a drain on social services. The average poor person from a country in which its currency is worth less than ours is not likely to have the resources or access to immigrate through proper channels. Also immigration quotas are heavily influenced by diplomatic relations so some counties get a better deal than others for their citizens. Long-winded way of saying, yes I agree that everyone should do it the proper way but first we must adjust our policies so that they can actually participate. After all, a rich person doesn't need to enter a country by sneaking in through the night, right? So help those who are simply seeking a better life and will work harder than most lazy Americans. I'm surrounded by hardworking immigrants. Believe me, they don't take it for granted the poverty or persecution that they escaped.
