The thing about Wendy William is that she was willing to burn bridges. She knew the celebs she talked about watched her show and would probably bar her from having access to certain spaces because of what she said on her show, AND THEY DID. Nowadays, the girls are trynna keep all those revenue streams open and need to be publicly nice to people to keep their jobs and get the next one (thnx gig economy). I think it's a double edged sword because Wendy only really had the Wendy Show at a certain point and wasn't able to dip her toes in projects outside of producing Lifetime movies. I don't blame the new entertainers for molding their style to survive in this industry long term but there is definitely some noticeable ass-kissing in mainstream hosting, or they tip-toe around what they want to really say to avoid "getting cancelled" even if their opinion wouldn't be offensive or unpopular.

I agree - and ziwe I like her, I always wonder how she’s be live or with an audience. But for Wendy it also took 20 years on the radio to build that clout and working out multiple formats of the Wendy show to lock in the one that became a hit. She comes from the era of Shock Jocks - and because she made big advertising money in radio, that gave her leverage on tv. I’m aging myself but I had just moved to Philly for college right before she left *power to start the tv show. Now in this era, reality tv and influencer culture obscures the “realness” and profitability of what we see, because at the end of the day, Wendy is a actually a tenured broadcaster and journalist that broke the rules, and THAT made her iconic, but now it’ll simply be anyone that goes viral.

I think people like Wendy and Joan Rivers were good at being the voices of dissent against celebrity ass kissing before social media but it doesn't feel as fresh when there's a random gay on twitter with a Lana icon reading your fave with laser precision and 200k retweets. It was also a novelty for the celebs since they were more coddled and sheltered from their critics a lot more back in the day. Mariah and Whitney seemed equal parts amused and annoyed with Wendy during their radio interactions, for example. Now celebs have nowhere to hide from the gossip, hurtful comments and memes so they aren't as willing to joke around about it.

Hmmm. Watching this video, it's like we just put Wendy in a box where she just asks rude questions to her guests. The Wendy Williams Show proved why Wendy was a force of nature all by herself. She is a great storyteller. Like listen to her talk on hot topics. Anyone can read off a teleprompter about the latest gossip but how Wendy delivers it is waaay different. She's really built for this business. Hell, watch her go on other shows as a guest and you see her dominating the conversation. Like she's that girl. Also, she actually gives good advice. Her Ask Wendy is really good. She's direct and practical. Like I think she's the only Hollywood personality who talks about The Killer. Like she's really an enigma that no one has come close too. Like all the other talk shows don't have her charisma and it shows. It's not just the problematic takes on stuff. Her own Wendy-ness also makes her unique as a host.

I'm only in the biography part of the video but I wanted to add that the fact that there was no where she wasn't willing to go also got her in trouble from time to time. Her radio show got cancelled twice (on two different radio station). At the same time, some of the controversal things she said turned out to be true. Like she called out Whitney Houston for being on crack back when she was still America's sweetheart, but eventually we realized it was true. She also called Destiny's child Beyonce and the girls well before Beyonce went solo. I was shocked when she got her own TV show but I knew those higher ups knew exactly what they were getting into.
