41:19 To paraphrase J1mmy's react to Asmon's react: Nobody plays OSRS because of nostalgia anymore. We have years and years of fresh content and entire new lands that weren't in the original game. The only people who look at RuneScape with nostalgia are the people who played it for a little while like 15-years ago and never played again, looking at it from the outside and remembering back to that time. Just nostalgia will not ever carry a game.
@Blackbaldrik7 ай бұрын
Asmon's take that graphics are somehow paramount to a game's success feels very out of touch in an era where very few people are impressed by that anymore and so many of the biggest new games are made in retro styles with intentionally limited visuals. OSRS is massively successful compared to its considerably more visually impressive counterpart RS3. Tons of people enjoy "bad" visuals.

Asmond is surprise surprise being a little dramatic by calling these MMOs pieces of shit. But I do think he has a point with them not being good. Like some of the issues with these games are glaringly obvious and no one can tell you why they aren't being fixed. New world is a prime example, I loved that game but devs just did not care to fix the issues in it, so it died.

BDO is the only MMO that ive had any extended interest in other than WoW. Superb combat, solo q gear equalized 3v3 arena and decent large scale PvP. Definitely lacks on group PvE content tho. I would definitely suggest you give it try if you haven't recently, much improved since it came out originally. The age of the "all in one" MMO is over. Making a game that does all forms of combat, story, class design, PvE, PvP and life skills masterfully along with having some unique aspects is a monolithic feat. I think we are moving to splitting the community into separate games that do what each individual wants. Some prefer tab target, others prefer action combat, some people want to have to do 0 PvE to PvP and vice versa.

1:23:20 Audience and Playerbase are not the same thing.. The argument is for success of the game, not the content creator. btw.. if you say Playerbase and Audience are corelated, then viewership for a game wouldn't change based on who's streaming/uploading it.
@connergoldberg4 ай бұрын
If you ever want to get into old school runescape for a content creation run. Wait for them to release Leagues 5. The xp rates and buffs make it more suitable for content creation (watch some videos from the previous league from other creators like Solomission). And just use a guide for starting out leagues to get up to speed so you don't end up wasting time trying to figure out the early game.

Reason why Vanilla was perfect is lack of knowledge, you had thottbot and a hope every time you searched for stuff. There was an element of exploration that is lost as things get figured out and published within hours of release. You can't keep up churning content at a reliable pace, the format is outdated.
@Xero_Kaiser7 ай бұрын
If we're being honest, a lot of MMOs back then...yes, even WoW, got away with a lot of mediocre or outright shitty gameplay because of the novelty of playing online. Without that novelty doing the heavy lifting, the gameplay of most MMOs just doesn't hold up on it's own. So, no, we'll never get another MMO blowing up the way WoW did in 2004. Even WoW can't recreate WoW's success. It was just the right game that came out at just the right point in time and served as the introduction to MMOs or online gaming as a whole for a lot of people. There's no recreating that.

I'm sorry, but quests that are, "Kill 15 Demons", is not good game design. It's busywork for no reason. However, quests that are, "Go do a thing that seems important, will permanently change something, and doing it will _involve_ killing 15 Demons", is good game design.

The problem with wow is LFG. The reason we need LFG is because blizzard refuse to merge servers for the longest time. My friend moved to tich in wrath and got glad because he had hundreds of people to play while we only had a handful. He swap to sargeras in mopd and he raided like crazy. Blizzard would say it's about 50% 50% horde and alliance. Unfortunately at a server lv my server was 50/50 after cata it was 20/80 and now 5/95. my server needs lfg but if we had players we wouldn't need it.

The only generation of true MMORPG players were the ones that started at Classic WoW and Old Runescape for real. It started there and it dies at the latest WoW Classic return. Sure there was also some good MMORPGs in between there as well. Champions Online I would say was the ultimate one idea wise but it's population wasn't the highest.

The idea that WoW doesn't make enough money from its subscriptions alone is bullshit IMO. If those sub numbers from the Bellular video are even remotely accurate then 7-8million people paying 15 dollars a month you are looking around 100 mil+ a month. We are talking about a game making 1 bil a year on subs alone. This is absolutely enough money to pay for all the development and operating costs and still turn a decent profit. We are also not even mentioning the box price of each expansion once every 2 years to sustain it. WoW does not need any form of microtransaction in the game at all to sustain itself and even turn a profit. The problem is obviously corporate greed and share holders demanding a larger return on investment every quarter forcing devs to implement alternate ways to monetize their game to suck every single penny they possibly can from the game even if it comes at the cost of making an already successful/profitable game worse.

BDO had a bigger PvP player base than WoW ever had... like literally ever. On top of that it had way more depth and offered much more fun combat. Literally never could I duel for 4+ hours in WoW and in BDO you could do that against the same class. That's how fun it was, you didn't even need to swap classes. And BDO had much more competition than WoW back then, yet it still simply outperformed. Hands down.

@@TheeDeci BDO and p2w was a topic all over the years. I back then was placed #2 in the very first EU tournament and I payed around 200€ which was for pets and weight (basically nothing to do with power bur more about convenience). In theory you could p2w but you would need to spend like around 100k€ and there were very few individuals, yet - and that was the magic about BDO - you could still kill these people if you had the skill, which is why not a single "p2w player" has ever won a tournament. But the time I am talking about there was no p2w, there was a "value pack" which basically gave some convenience (no power at all) and equalled basically a sub.
