Excellent video. It speaks loudly about the state of education. We need more rigor and less fluff in schools. We should rethink our goals and methods for educating struggling students and those who do not want to go to college. Vocational training, perhaps? I am uneasy with tracking, which tends to favor the advantaged and shut out the disadvantaged. Student and parental accountability also needs to be examined. Teachers are not exclusively responsible for our kids' learning and future.

The video makes me think about how as educators we are quick to jump on new trends in regards to education reform. NCLB had it's shortcomings and I know I was not very vocal about them as a 2nd year teacher. Now with the common core, I'm ready to ask; what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately, the video also makes me think that the real joke is on the students who went through 14 years of this! If I was a parent of a student and the "education system " failed them.I would considering suing

If i may so boldly assert that the solution to education is simply free-market competition (not regulated in any way, shape, or form). Let the consumer decide: Do they truly value better education ? Or do they require more economical, cheaper alternatives ? Competition is going to increase the quality of the product or service and lower the price!

I'm looking for a "like button" for your reply to donjack. You are completely correct! As someone who teaches these kids in college and beyond, I completely support the common core concept. I can also say that this video is sadly representative of what I see on a daily basis.

Common Core is terrible. Sorry, that's just how it is. The less steps there are, the less mistakes you'll make. That's a FACT. Especially when you're talking things like second or third grade. That's the time where you've just got to memorize facts. 1+1, multiplication times tables... You can't possibly try to understand WHY 1+1 is 2, you likely never will. So why bother trying? You've just got to memorize it.

The thing is, we aren't living decades ago. Our technology and knowledge has changed. We now know more about the brain and how it works. Also, what's wrong with behavior modification, if it can be used to help students better understand how they think and thus become self motivated to learn. Will Common Core fix all of our problems? Probably not, but its a step in the right direction.
@sward88431912 жыл бұрын
Common Core will radically alter education in a positive way. Instead of multiple choice answers in which only one response is correct, students will have to demonstrate their ability to problem solve and show their thinking process. Everything will shift from procedural to conceptual. It's a very positive shift that will help ensure students are prepared for college and/or careers.

Amen Laura! It does kill creative thinking. I drive a 12 passenger van full of kids back and forth from 6th grade through 12th. These kids know that the "Testing"" doesn't affect their grades in any way. I actually heard a conversation between the kids stating that they don't even try! Some of the kids bubble in geometric designs or the like and don't even read the questions on the test. They don't care one darn bit about those tests! the only tests they care about are the 1's that effect them!

I initially loved this video because it demonstrates what I dislike about the aspect of our current education system that creates what I call the "multiple choice student". That is to say I often encounter students at the college age and beyond who are unable to integrate what they have learned to answer a question-they can only use the process of elimination to rule out unlikely answers in a multiple choice format. But, and this is a HUGE but, the common core does NOT fix this problem. I thought it did when I first saw this video but now that the curriculum is beginning to be adopted, I see it merely levels the playing field. There are definitely some improvements in the approach to learning, that will be implemented with common core, but at the expense of advanced curricula for gifted students in many schools throughout the country. So, now I am going to have to say this video is entertaining but misleading.
@notrombones50415 жыл бұрын
This seems less about common-core curriculum (or the lack thereof), then it is an indictment of depending on basic scaffolding teaching techniques for an *entire teaching strategy* instead of just using scaffolding for introducing NEW concepts or challenging new skill sets. Scaffolding was mean't to be like "training wheels" ---- An introductory step which is intended to just get students started on some new challenge, and not to be used as a lifelong technique to depend on in normal functioning.

I understand setting goals encourages achievement but standardization eliminates competition if all teachers have the same courses are kids in Connecticut in need of the same course as kids in Maine? This is such a reality of current education. We are going to continue to be inferior country until we do actually allow students to think for themselves and be innovative. My hope is that educators are allowed the ability to be trained in writing and analyzing. Not all teachers are savvy in these kinds of skills. Formal foreign language instruction has gone by the wayside in many schools. Languages teach structure, analytical skills, and extensive vocabulary. We can only hope.

Hope is about all we've got, but let's do our best to go into this with our eyes open. Then our students might have a chance of succeeding despite what is sure to be a field day for assessment and supposed accountability, including tie ins to the SAT (find out who David Coleman is if you don't already know). Best wishes to all.

You think Common Core is going to cure these ills? It's just allowing the publishers to make gazillions more because they will now have to create NEW tests, NEW test prep materials, NEW "professional development" to get us to teach to the Common Core! I've always maintained that 'Mandated professional development is neither professional nor likely to result in development'. It holds true here, too.

Education was just fine before they started all new programs decades ago. They did'nt switch to these programs to help teach children better. These programs are an excuse to implement behaviour modification programs, amongst other things, that would never be accepted by the pulic if they were told what they were going to do. It's quite clear in the workbooks for these programs that the title of the books and the intended purpose are two different things.

This is awesome! I can't wipe the smile off my face! If it wasn't so funny, I'd be really concerned about the state of our country. These kids, regardless of how much we work with them on critical thinking and problem solving, are being "trained" by the technology around them and the state testing they have drilled into their heads. This is so sad, but totally true!
@3steps6points12 жыл бұрын
Common Core is going to have a ripple effect. The emphasis is on college readiness, but the students at the bottom probably aren't going to college and don't want to be college material. Those students get frustrated very easily when things aren't 100% clear and the rigor of Common Core is largely irrelevant to their future. How will we meet their needs? Also, colleges make a fortune off remedial classes. Fewer students who need those will impact those colleges' bottom line.

I'm looking forward to Common Core, too, because overall I think it's going to be a huge improvement. However, CC isn't going to replace the emphasis on multiple choice testing. Schools are still primarily going to be rewarded or punished based on how well their students choose one of four answers on a test. Since our state breaks them into quintiles and demands all 5 grow, we'll hear a lot of complaints and politicking about the ones on the bottom at first who can no longer be spoon-fed.
@laurapeterson690411 жыл бұрын
This video is so true, but this makes it sound like the teacher's fault when in fact it's the ridiculous amount of mandated state and district testing. Think of all the amazing things we (teachers) could do if it weren't for test prep and teaching students how to take a test. It's ridiculous. Unfortunately public schools are basically a business and are not always. The standards are not the problem. The awful high risk testing is the problem. It kills creative thinking.

Cc is not going to revolutionize teaching... teachers already do much of it! Anyone in Florida remember when FCAT first came out? There were 3 types of answer choices. Multiple choice and 2 written response type - one was a short response the other an 'extended'. Those lasted a short time and were phased out.. guess why? No the answer is not C .. The state could not afford to "grade" them since it required a HUMAN to do it. What has changed since the late 90's? We might even have LESS $
