Why we need to fight misinformation about vaccines | Ethan Lindenberger

Ethan Lindenberger never got vaccinated as a kid. So one day, he went on Reddit and asked a simple question: "Where do I go to get vaccinated?" The post went viral, landing Lindenberger in the middle of a heated debate about vaccination and, ultimately, in front of a US Senate committee. Less than a year later, the high school senior reports back on his unexpected time in the spotlight and a new movement he's leading to fight misinformation and advocate for scientific truth.

Actually, being stupid, in my opinion, is blindly believing an industry proven to be liars without question. If you look into the subject with critical thinking and listen to impartial investigative journalists, scientists and doctors, the risk far outweighs the benefits, which are pretty much non-existant at this point. As far as saving millions of lives, it is not "exactly" true, clean water and basic hygiene came along around the same time in history, and helped eradicate disease much more than vaccines. Also, these "stats" are based mainly on third world coutries, and do not reflect reality in America. I would not compare surgery to Vaccines, they are really really not the same. When I look at my 7-year old diaper wearing non-verbal vaccine-injured daughter, I have all the answers I need. When you live through that, and are still a fan of vaccines, you will have proven your faith to me.

I wish you would look within and stop this "no debate nonsense". You people are so stuck on being right that you want to shut debate down. Where does that end? Vaccination immunity does not carry a thousand fold fewer risks, firstly. And, that unsubstantiated comment would not end the debate because there are hundreds of millions of people who have already been infected and do have natural immunity. The risk you speak of is behind them and you want to end debate and force them to assume the risk of an unnecessary inoculation. Also, there are sick people, people with cancer, diabetes, risky pregnancies... The risk of the shot may be greater than no shot. Stop trying to end debate and stop trying to be right all of the time.

Ethan should be recognized and applauded for the work that he has done for himself surrounding self-education and vaccine information. Coming from a small town in rural Ohio myself, it can be intimidating to stand out against the beliefs of your family and of the community. Ethan put in the time and the work to educate himself about vaccine safety and efficacy, and make a conscious decision regarding his own health, despite it being controversial. He now encourages others to do their own research about controversial health-related subjects and make fact-based decisions for themselves rather than following others’ beliefs that they find online through social media. Young individuals with this mentality are desperately needed in healthcare and public policy positions. Health misinformation is a serious threat to public health. It can cause confusion, spread mistrust, harm people’s health, and undermine public health efforts. Limiting the spread of health misinformation is a moral and civic imperative that will require effort from all individuals

I do not know your country, but seeing as your English is good you could read what the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has to say about vaccines? Kurzgesagt (a science show on youtube, in English) also has videos on vaccines if you want a video explaining it more visually with statistics. If you have any specific questions on how the immune system works, just ask! I can probably help you out as a drug development student. I will state upfront that the majority of doctors and institutions see vaccines as necessary, with the CDC, NHS (UK) and WHO (World health Organisation) backing vaccination. At a certain age you can decide for yourself what you think is right to do, without your parents' interference. This talk brings up a very interesting point- at what age should younger individuals be able to make their own medical decisions? For example, if a 13 year old knows the importance of vaccination, but has parents who from his birth were against him receiving any immunizations, should they be able to talk to the pediatrician and advocate for their own healthcare? Could state laws possibly be passed and help individuals under the age of 18 to make that decision? Especially since younger individuals are the most at risk population for condition for which there are vaccines- such as chicken pox, rubella, mumps, etc. that can potentially have negative life long health consequences.
@Steel9k

"if a 13 year old knows the importance of vaccination, but has parents who from his birth were against him receiving any immunizations, should they be able to talk to the pediatrician and advocate for their own healthcare?" A 13 year old is still vulnerable. Even adults are naive and believe provaxer propaganda. The parents of a child are the only ones who want the best for their kids. Everyone else can have other interests. Even pediatricians, provaxers, politicians, the world economic forum, bill gates... But only the parents want the best for their child. So who can make the decisions regarding the vaccination (dangerous invasive medical treatment) of a minor? A child is naive, has no life experience, can be fooled by provaxer propaganda. Only the parents can have the right to make these decisions. At least the parents have a chance to resist provaxers and their ideology.

The problem as I see it with the whole vaccination/anti-vaccination debate is that both sides aren't being entirely open and honest which is why the discussion has gone off track and not addressed the real issue regarding the resistance: Not all vaccines are equally effective. Not all vaccines are risk-free and have no life-long side effects. Not all countries have support for families having to deal with the children who do suffer life-long disabilities from side effects from vaccinations (some did, but their funds dried up or were lobbied away as required and the pharmaceutical companies were given immunity from prosecution). So the issue isn't the science (vaccines need a critical mass of people on them to prevent the spread of these diseases and many of them work extremely well most of the time). It isn't even a debate that like all medication, vaccines can cause side effects (some even life-long disabilities). The issue is we aren't holding the pharmaceutical industry accountable (if they were, they would be encouraged to improve their formulation and delivery to reduce risks and side-effects), The issue is we aren't supporting the families that have to take care of children for their entire lives with disabilities from vaccines for the very small number that do have side effects and react to the vaccines. (Note: vaccines do not cause autism, but a child with autism can already have a weakened immune system or a compromised blood-brain barrier, that makes them have an increased risk of getting either a temporary or permanent side-effect (obviously not as bad as getting the actual disease we are attempting to prevent, but nonetheless, there needs to be better support for families dealing with side effects). Both sides need to be honest. The anti-vaccination side needs to stop debating the importance of vaccinations, and the pro-vaccination side needs to be more transparent about the effectiveness, report and address the side effects, and resume the funds that were there in the 80's and 90's that were set up to help families of those that did have life long side effects from vaccinations in order to rebuild trust between the pharmaceutical industry (who wanted a quick way out of financial exposure, be guaranteed a secured revenue stream and lobbied for the change) and the general public. What we need the conversation to move toward now is how we return to what was a working system, where the pharmaceutical industry did have to pay into a fund to support those that suffered from side effects, have a government allow their health branches to report on the effectiveness of each vaccination and allow doctors to discuss the risks (like we do with all other medication and medical procedures; essentially lift the current gag order in place in many countries).

First I would love to thank Ethan for this entertaining and empowering talk about vaccines. I commend Ethan for educating himself and advocating for himself to receive vaccines despite his mother’s concern. I think the key point that Ethan brought up was the misinformation and how healthcare workers are unable to understand where parents against vaccines are coming from. Of course, everyone wants what is best for their child, but with the endless stream of misinformation on social media, it is difficult to determine what those entails. If healthcare workers cannot understand the perspective of their patients’ families, they will struggle to educate them and maintain their trust in the healthcare field. At the root of this healthcare issue is the debate on ethics. Parents against vaccination claim that they have autonomy for themselves and their children and can decide to forgo vaccinations. In medicine in general the principle of autonomy holds true for most everything. Autonomy is defined as the right of an adult who it competent to make decisions about their own healthcare. This extends to minors as they are dependent on their parents for their healthcare decisions. So why is it that families should not be employing this right of autonomy and making their own choices. The reality is that vaccines do that side effects for certain individuals and they are unable to safety be vaccinated. Their only route to protection is through herd immunity, which is accomplished by a majority of the population being vaccinated. With the recent rise of parents against vaccines, breakthrough cases of measles and other preventable diseases have been popping up across the country and these individuals are not protected. This brings up the ethical pillar of justice which is defined as the most good for the most amount of people. While it is essential for healthcare professionals to follow these ethical pillars it is not necessarily required for the general population, but it would be better if people chose to make the right decision. Another important way to employ justice in this topic is to spread accurate information and prevent misinformation from spreading. This includes the acts that Ethan mentioned such as removing misinformation from social media sites. I really like what Ethan’s final message was in this TED talk that data doesn’t resonate with people, but people resonate with people. Sharing stories like Ethan’s will help to debunk the myths that are driving our beliefs about vaccines in the wrong direction.
@crosstif2159
@crosstif2159 Жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that you say herd immunity is achieved when the majority of the population is vaccinated. That’s a misleading statement. Herd immunity is achieved if the majority of the population has IMMUNITY to a disease, virus, etc. And yes, sometimes, vaccines provide immunity to a certain disease. But most vaccines don’t. That’s why in 2021, the CDC changed the definition of a vaccine from “provides immunity” to “provides protection”. A vaccine is like any other drug. It has a benefit to risk ratio. It’s not the end all, be all, one dose and you’re good, safe and effective BS that MSM has been spewing for the last couple of decades. As for this video, this dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s simply instilling his own biases and opinions instead of reviewing some real data.

After being told his entire life that getting immunized is riskier than getting the virus itself, I am really pleased by Ethan's independent decision to become immunized. He also educated himself, those around him, and others all over the world by simply asking, "Where can I get immunized?" In the field of healthcare, there is a concept known as autonomy, which simply refers to the right of a patient and fellow human being to make decisions regarding their own health or in any other situation requiring such decisions. During the peak of COVID-19, there was a constant debate about becoming vaccinated against a vaccine that, in some people's eyes, appeared to be establishing itself extremely quickly on social media, in homes, and at work. It's excellent that we all had the autonomy to choose whether or not to get immunized, but making an informed choice is also a crucial part of decision-making. Many people's opinions on the vaccine, like those of Ethan's mother, originated from social media. We may now access some extremely current and instructive information on social media. But sadly, there is a lot of false information on social media that can be quite persuasive and spread rapidly and easily. It is crucially important to get evidence-based information before making any health-related decisions. This requires some investigation on our part, but obtaining accurate and scientifically validated information can have a long-term impact on our health and the health of those we care about. I am very appreciative that Ethan decided to educate himself and let others know how crucial it is to combat vaccine misconceptions, all while being kind to his mother, who had very different views than he did on the matter.

@Random Animations Wrong. The CDC studies and all other studies use other vaccines as the 'placebo'. They don't use inert substances like saline solution. I don't understand why most anti-vaxxers are also anti-abortion. Anti-vaxxing : someone has the right to control what happens in their own body, even if that damages one or more innocent lives, with possible lethal consequences Anti-abortion : someone has no right to control what happens in her own body, even if that ends something that can't even be called life yet (talking about early abortions here)

@Lost Hero www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/downloads/appendices/B/excipient-table-2.pdf this is straight from the CDC website and if you look at the ingredients you will see "MRC-5 cellular proteins" and "MRC-5 human diploid cells" which are cell cultures that come from aborted fetuses.

Hi Erik, based on your comment I can tell you don't exactly support vaccine hesitancy and as such, your assumption that you know what most anti vaxxers would support is incorrect. The VAST majority of anyone who questions vaccine safety is definitely PRO CHOICE, PRO SCIENCE and PRO MEDICAL FREEDOM (a constitutional right) : I choose what goes into my children's bodies and what I allow to come out of mine. There are a few anti vaxxers who do take issue with the aborted fetal cell lines used in vaccine manufacture, but again, the VAST majority only worry about fetal cell lines regarding injecting foreign DNA into an infants underdeveloped immune system for safety purposes, not the social implications. (also no "TRUE" placebo controlled trials have determined if these small traces of foreign DNA are safe in the long term as it relates to the amount of diabetes, cancer, and autism, etc in the two groups. Ps. if you happen to read a study that notes a "placebo" group, please dig deeper as you will soon find out it was compared against another vaccine or the potentially unsafe adjuvant and it was unscientifically labeled as a placebo group when it fact it was not. I find this deeply disturbing and straight up negligent as it relates to the practice of scientific studies) I absolutely love being a mom with all of my being and can't imagine ever choosing to have an abortion, but that doesn't keep me from respecting another woman's right to choose whether she becomes a mother, or whether she chooses to vaccinate her kids. I think you'll find - if you look deeper - that most of the vaccine hesitant parents are absolutely pro choice in both matters. Hope this helps shed light on your previous misunderstanding. Again. MEDICAL FREEDOM. A constitutional right.
