Great job on the video. I did watch the whole thing, and even then I felt...eh. what hurts the most is that I was actually excited for the live action! I want to see what knew animation & battle tactics the fairies and specialists had. Like Falcon & Winter soldier. How they might bring futuristic tech and magic together like a Carnival Row/ Star Wars hybrid. How the trix might tie in. I wanted to see how they could combined both new possibilities and nostalgia together 2 make something worth remembering. But no, I guess that was just too much 2 ask for.😤😑😭

What I don't understand is that stella in the original already subverted the mean girl trope. She was a typical popular, rich, blonde spoiled girl... But had a heart of gold. Why would they choose to revert back to the trope here?

She’s so unlikable that even if she gets character development, i’ll still be very “meh” about her because she has the victim mindset while also being a bully shitty person. The original stella would spit on her tbh. And the best thing about the original show was stella and bloom’s friendship but we got none of that :/

@@Tarikkb but we’re kinda sick and tired of seeing the “broken girl with a sad back story is a piece of shit manipulator to everyone because of her sad back story and only slowly grows as a person because she realizes she needs these people in her life.” Like that’s not stella at all. Stella was my favorite character in the og winx, with her sassiness and jokes and her support towards her friends, but in here she’s the complete opposite and her excuse is her sad life. She has a victim mindset and i hate it. Like girlie, everyone is going through something but you don’t see them bullying each other and manipulating each other. Stella reallyyyy sucks as a character in this show and they really need to do a 180° with her for her to be likable. Edit: may i add that the og stella also had a sad backstory with her parents being divorced and then her father being under a spell and literally forgetting her, and she got turned into a monster by her evil almost step mom and almost step sis, and yet she never once turned against her friends or manipulated them. Why? Cause she’s a decent human being. End of story

@@KpopsFatherTaehyung yes everyone goes through hard stuff but I hope you know that everyone is different so they react to the hardships different, and yes it’s not Stella we know, but it’s clear that she has been mentally abused and manipulated and controlled all her life , which I think is an interesting take on stella’s “appearance matters “ mentality she had in the animation, and since she can’t talk back to her mother and is always pushed down and stressed about being the queen, she’s taking that out on other people cuz her strength matches the other student , they’re her level and size, it’s not a matter of “she’s mean” but she’s lashing out cuz too much control also can equal going out of control behavior, which stella quite often does , but a character arc from this Stella to the Stella we know is MUCH better than just getting the Stella we know from the start cuz there wouldn’t be much development to her character, I mean yes there would be a little but in order make a great complex character that’ll evolve into a lovable , sassy , fun character this path that they chose is much better , when she finally gets her arc it’ll be completely worth the change, it will be a well deserved quality for the character rather than just giving every ingredient from the start which would kill the potential of the character in my opinion

She was spoiled and that showed in her lack of control when talking, so she end up hurting people without mean but she always tried to amend her mistakes, she was never mean for the sake of it. And Stella does have a character arc in the animation show, she learned how to be more empathetic and less self centered specially during the first seasons of the show. But she was never an aggressive bully. That fate Stella is a old teen edgy show troupe and you can't argue that it's more interesting see the same mean girl arch over and over again and say it's a change.

I love how we forget that Aisha was a BADASS in the original. Like she's not just "athletic", but she's the one who would, and did, fight evil by herself so that she doesn't put anyone else at harm. I mean that's how they found her originally. It even took her time to understand what fighting as a team meant. They'll still hopefully get everything fixed later on

She was an intelligent highly skilled princess, who was also athletic and brave. They took everything from her caracter even her fucking royal status, I'm not even gonna say why that doesn't surprises me.

Aisha was done DIRTY. In the original she was probably put through the most, maybe even more than Bloom. She had to fight alone in the episode she was introduced. She fell off of a cliff and collapsed on the front porch of the school. In a later season her fiancé DIES and she goes on an angry murder spree and her friends have to talk her out of it. Not only does this show how bad Netflix handled Aisha, it also shows that you can have dark plots and bright colors at the same time.

And the part where she's a princess who doesn't like royal life, because they raised her to be seen but not heard, so a lot of her arc is breaking out of her shell and learning to communicate her feelings I don't really like the fact that she's put through so much more than the rest though, Nabu really shouldn't have died.

@@l.c.8475 no, there have been some close calls but nabu was the only perma death. though i would put the chaos that is riven and musa pretty damn high up there. i wonder if they had kept moving in the mature direction if it would have gotten addressed better. in season 5 she doesn't really seem like she's grieving much and nabu is almost forgotten. i think she brings him up once with the blonde guy when he tries to flirt with her and that's it.

I LOVED that you mentioned the lack of real "friendship" - the original Winx were friends because they spent a lot of time together, cultivating their friendship because they were nice and gentle girls. They had their own personalities that fit and worked together. In Fate, they are never together just because they like to be together - they are talking about boys, or being edgy and dark, or trying to solve a mistery. And they don't really have a personality, they just have generalistic aspects: Bloom is the confused redhead, Stella is the mean blonde (because she has a mean mommy), Musa is the grumpy introvert, Terra is the "fat" one who is trying to fit in, and Aisha is the sporty-black-good friend. I mean, we don't have the slighest idea of who they are and why they became friends - in the original Winx, we all (children watching) wanted to be a part of the group, and the group on Fate would be the one I'll go on the other direction just so I wouldn't bump on them on the school's halls

It is clear that there will be a second season, friendship grows little by little, like trust, it does not happen from one day to the next. the winx at first were only together when something serious happen in 6 episodes they will not show everything xd but we must assume that if they spend time together when they are in the room. In the second season we will see more of their friendship, as we can see in the last chapter. Or are you going to tell me that you make new friends and in a week you have confidence? It took me a year to be close to my friends from college

@@amaranta2632 oh dear, I actually took an year and a half to open up to real friends in college 🙈🙈. But I think I didn't phrase it right: in Winx, the girls were actually trying and making an effort to be friends, while in Fate, they are only trying to be moody and portray stheriotypical teens, so that's my main point. They didn't have to be instant friends, but they weren't even trying. I can say that I don't plan on watching season 2. I felt such neglect and lack of honoring of the original show that I don't believe I can stomach any more of it. Nothing against those who liked it, I'm just saying Fate is not, and will never be, Winx 💕💕💕

@Wong Vanessa not really, a spinoff is a derivation from already existing works that focus on more details and different aspects from the original work (e.g. particular topics, characters or events). It's an adaptation or an inspiration. But I don't mind much the plot lines they added/ removed/ changed, my real problem with Fate is the complete change of peesonality of the Winx - everything else would be acceptable, but changing their personalities was a lack of respect to the original's unique view and message 💕💕

True, what I liked about the original show is that they developed this friendship: stella makes friends with bloom but it’s not until episode 3/4 that they actually decide to make the club. Plus, even after making the club we see that they are still developing the dynamics, they argue, they question who is the leader, they grow and form meaningful bonds with eachother. And even when they added Aisha in the second season they take time to fully accept her in the club, especially stella, and they take time to form a bonding. Here they are just... there, they are forced together to solve the mystery and get stella’s ring back but... it wasn’t genuine.

I miss when shows used to have colour. this muted, grey colour palate is so uninspired :( and I think Hollywood forgets movies like jawbreaker that has dark subject matter but a colourful palate. I loved this review so much!

Ugh, yes Jawbreaker is an amazing movie. A video I’m working on now mentions Jawbreaker, and how the movie was created around the idea that jawbreakers are sugary sweet and bright in color, but could still hurt you. Hence the color palette mixed with dark themes. So good. 😩❤️

Yeah that’s true pink accents isn’t exclusive to Stella either it’s mostly seen with flora but Bloom also has pink in her clothing sometimes and transformation outfits that go along with blue, Stella wears some purple too but it’s very dark purple and yellow.

The main thing that I had a problem with in the show as a minor (although there was SO much that I found intolerable, all of which you mention in the video) was the fact that there are sexual jokes/ content made by characters which are meant to be 16. And fair enough, minors do make sexual jokes about themselves and each other. But the head writer is 55. Hollywood and media in general seems to have such an obsession with sexualising children as soon as they’re technically legal (legal age being 16 in many countries) - but often even then they aren’t actually legal. It felt so uncomfortable as someone who was born only one year later than when the characters themselves are meant to have been born in, for the characters to be sexualised to such a degree. And the actors and actresses may not be 16, yes, but the fact that it’s meant to be with 16 year olds is honestly disturbing. It needs to stop.

Oh let’s not forgot, that same protagonist doesn’t listen to others and is the reason why everything goes south. Then to add on to that, they don’t listen to what anyone says and believe that they are right and when the other characters disagree with them, then they play the whole “you would never understand” card. Also, they are always prompted to be considered “right” and the characters who were smarter or who was trying to warn the main character is the one who has to apologize or face serious repercussions although they didn’t do anything wrong and actually tried to help 😑.

Then Stella had the nerve to be pissed at her when she only really wanted to help Bloom so she could have Sky. Terra had the nerve to be upset at her dad because he wouldn’t tell her what was going on, like I understand they should have been honest with the kids but they were trying to protect them. Like it annoyed me that they were upset at something like that. Then at the end they decided to make everyone friends although none of them were nice to eachother the entire and were being total pricks. Like since they wanted to change everything they should’ve made the girls learn how to tolerate eachother before making them actual friends. It felt forced as if they were trying to cram everything in at the last minute.

Also they should have had a separate school for the specialists but keep it to where they could be both girls and boys cause that was something I really liked that Netflix did.

I feel like a lot if netflix shows don’t make the first episodes as intriguing as they should be because of the way streaming shows are set up, which is so tacky. Most shows when airing on a network on television have to make the pilot engaging because that’s how they are able to hook people in, to gain viewers and to make the network want to renew the show for more episodes/seasons. Streamimg shows don’t, and it’s sad, because they’ll take really good concepts and turn it into a boring heap of mess that doesn’t get interesting until the last couple of episodes. It’s like they don’t even try anymore. One of the most intriguing first episodes of a streaming series that I have seen in YEARS is WandaVision, and that might be due to the series only streaming one episode a week, so they have to keep viewers hooked to want to wait a week to watch the next episode.

Girl, I am so sorry that you've been bullied for having your own opinion. Jesus, people can just click off the video if they don't like it, that's what I do. Anyway, I agree with everything you said about this series and I haven't even watched it. However, I have seen enough reviews about Fate from people who liked the original Winx Club to know that I am sure not going to watch this disaster of a remake. In fact, I just began re-watching the original show and I have to say it still holds up and this is coming from a 26 year old woman.

@@ares6152 I did too, and I never cry at animation ever. It just felt so wrong. I mean the entire fourth season was focused on how the Winx Club was going to have to make tougher decisions and deal with higher stakes getting in between the fight with the earth fairies and the Wizards of the black circle. With that being said, Bloom is from Earth. As a result, she should have more stakes in this fight than anyone else seeing as she's the only fairy that was actually raised in Gardenia. And because by association she is an Earth fairy you would think that this was more of a personal battle for her so that she would be the one to have more to lose. It made no sense that after everything that had been said and done that Nabu was the one who had to sacrifice himself. Especially because there was no lead up to him dying at all. There was no real focus on Nabu being the hero or having a special role to play in the war. It all just felt like another reason to get rid of a black character so that any of the other more favorite characters could have survived. And to that I say screw you creators and the horse that you rode in on!!!

Something that bugs me that I haven't seen many people talk about is how awfully Netflix did the Specialists. Even though the Winx girls are horribly fractured and whitewashed, what made this show feel totally un-Winx was the absolute disregard for the incredible friendships of the Specialist boys. I mean, trying to make Riven be a pseudo-Brandon just seems like bad judgement, and the Sky/Brandon reveal towards the beginning of the animated show was one of the best twists ever! And don't get me started on Timmy; the show absolutely needed more heart and sweetness, and the fact that they decided not to include sweet friend Timmy shows in the final product. The whole show just feels heartless, when the original animated series is a story of ~10 people being friends and going on adventures together!

This show could have started a new trend for the teen, young adult dramas of the 2020s. Instead it ended with taking the most over done tropes of the past. Agree that the last 20 min or so was the best and most suprising ending I though they would go for. The over all plot with blooms backstory is not bad, I simply just want more colour, less swearing (it just got to much for me at one point) and better treatment of Aisha and Terra. A better contrast to other teen shows and a better adaptation of the original. Lastly, is it just me or did anyone else also feel disapointed in the level of technology they used? Like, why would they keep the social media of the human world in a world full of magic... they lost so much by removing tecna..

There's this anime that just recently came out called Wonder Egg Priority. It deals with the problems of teenage girls in a mature and respectful way. The show is very dark featuring mentions of depression, suicide, suicidal thoughts, self harm, eating disorders, obsessive beauty, etc., while still remaining bright and colourful and being light sometimes. The four girls that this story followe feel like real teenage girls that I could meet at my school.

When a season of a show is only 6 episodes you do not need to watch it all to know you won't like it. Failing to hook the audience in episode 1 when you have so little room to work with in the first place is their fault. Something 'getting good after half a season or a full season later is just flat out a waste of time if you have to slog through bad episodes to get there. Yeah, I've also heard people mention Episode 6 is the episode where things really start getting good and you see what they're trying to do but that's THE LAST EPISODE of the season! I don't think the "3 episode rule" even applies when 3 episodes is literally 50% of the story.

it was hard to like any of the characters. The most likeable character for me was Beatrix.. If I had to choose another it would be Stella ( However, her character development wasn't build up properly. It was like one day she was mean and then the last episodes she was all about friendship and girl power... the development was rushed ) .. I was disappointed that they robbed Aisha of her story. Aisha was a princess, her whole story was interesting , in the original her fiance even died.. The Winx cartoon had its very dark moments. honestly what i wanted in Fate: the Winx saga was for Stella to be plus sized. imagine that? the confident, popular, fashion oriented character being treated the same as she is in the original show, WHILE being fat?? imagine how amazing that rep would be!! I wish certain remakes based off old movies/series or cartoons would learn a thing or two from Cobra Kai. The series focuses on one of the dojo's where the movie's antagonist trains from. Now we get to see different perspectives and just newer material ( one of the best series imo) which does justice to the original movies. I wish with Fate saga, they could have focused on Cloud Tower and have Alfea and red fountain students constantly meeting and stuff. Ah my heart. I loved winx club, the only reason I watch this is because I hope it will get better and that the producers listen to their viewers or atleast give a dawn about the winx plot or remove winx from the title of the show. The sad part is that Aisha has so many good storylines that they could have used. For example her strict upbringing, how Anne taught her how to dance to make her feel free, how she's the only one who knows the location of the Pixie Village, her fear of being alone and the fact that she almost got an arranged marrige in season 3. They could have done so much with her character but, instead they decided to do absolutely nothing.

@@starfiregabby I feel like Taranee is what they wanted to make of Bloom, because she had a similar life story to Bloom /Bloom from the original show, they were both found in burning buildings as babies while the fire didnt hurt them, i also think Taranee had some incident with her house and her fire powers but i dont really remember and might be wrong/, but they had very different characters. Blook /from Fate/ is very impatient and wants to have the powers and thinks she knows best and she can teach herself while Taranee was kind of scared/?/ from her fire powers at first, she was like "ok no thanks" and later grew to actually feel like herself with her power, she was pretty reserved and quiet with it. Another interesting thing is that all the girls in WITCH werent in the same class, Irma, Taranee and Hay Lin were in the same class while Will and Cornelia were older in a different class /I also think Cornelia and Elion were in the same class but i dont really remember/. Anyways it was interesting that they are not in the same class because nowadays everyone is in the same class in all these teen shows and even tho they werent, the WITCH girls had more friendship chemistry than whatever the Fate girls had, and they lived together.

This was an absolutely brilliant analysis of this show - very thoughtful and detailed. I agree with your comments about the black women always being in the supporting or helping roles for white protagonists. It’s disappointing this is still happening in 2021. On a side note, I really appreciated the character Jolene in the Queens Gambit. I agree she was there to push along the storyline of the white protagonist, but upon reflection, her character had so much growth into her adult years and seemed to have her principles and values much more clearly set than the main character. I would’ve like to see more of her throughout the show.

one good thing about adding darkness to a show originally made for young children is that, as you said, it can be channeled into the storytelling and raising the stakes. but this show completely misses the mark, making the villians and the overall story uninteresting (in my opinion). they literally have a world of magic and fantasy to explore but they didn't take advantage of that enough and made the main "monsters" boring and the fairy villains (i.e. beatrix) non intimidating. instead, they used the 16+ rating to mention sex every 2 seconds and make the characters eat weed brownies 💀

It just want to set something straight. The reason why Netflix brands it as Winx is because the original creators are involved in the production of Fate and it is completely based on it as an adaptation. The reason why it is more 'dark' is because of the original creators, who wanted to make a more mature Winx Club for an older audience for a while now. So I think that whether or not it was on this platform (Netflix) or any other, it would probably be in the same version. I do agree with most of the points you make (especially Aisha(!)), but I feel like most of it can be set straight in the next season(s), because these episodes felt rushed, not just the episode itself, but also the writing and the production.

I don't get the people who bully you for writing it off. I saw the entire thing and it most definitely IS a lost cause. I mean they literally threw the characters down the gutter as far as their personalities are concerned. They're so predictable and boring. And literally are the exact definitions of they respective stereotype. Bloom is "not like other girls" and I hate it when she keeps going on pretending that no one else but her in this world has issues. Stella is just mean girl minus the genius of Regina George. The original did a good job at subverting the popular girl trope. Stella was a popular spoiled rich blonde girl but still "had a heart of gold" as someone else in the comment section mentioned. Aisha was literally the only one in my opinion who was likeable, but unfortunately she is only used as a side character to aid Bloom's story (Bloom who annoyed me so much I couldn't care about her). Flora, or Terra now, is very one note. Musa is also very one note. And the reason I call Terra "Flora" is because during the production of this show they were casting her as Flora. She was meant to be Flora. But after they made the casting choice to cast a white girl, they changed her name to Terra so that they could avoid backlash and whitewashing claims. Also things about shows like this that annoy me is that they constantly mention how there is a dark side inside some character but never show it. I remember watching the show Gotham and it had the same. Everyone keeps saying how the lead has a "dark side" but he is literally also the only good person without an horrendous murderous tendencies on that entire show. It's frustrating when shows try to force the "dark" stuff down your throat but never do it well or justify it well enough. Anyway my main point is that this show doesn't know what its doing,. As a standalone it would've been fine. But its supposed to be a remake of a show that is already very well made and has so much that you can adapt so well that this comes off as disappointing.

Netflix always thinks darker = sex and dark lighting (STOP MAKING TEEN SHOWS DARK I CAN'T FREAKING SEE). All they had to do was maybe explore storylines that the cartoon couldn't. They could've explored more of the kingdom politics/class differences, they could've addressed how problematic it was for students to fight in a literal war, and they could've actually gone in-depth about the implications of the trauma that the girls have gone through (we got them having nightmares in the cartoon and they could've used that and pulled an Avatar and grow with the audience but NOOOO). From what I've heard and seen in other commentary videos like yours, I feel like they gave Layla's personality to Bloom because Layla was one that learned how to open up and be part of a team and make friends in Season 2, one of my favourite things about her was her development from being so guarded due to childhood trauma and overcoming that because she finally found who she felt were always going to be there for her. They gave all of that to Bloom because they just had to reduce her to the token black friend to be there in order to further her white friend's storyline. It's not like Winx Club itself wasn't problematic but Layla, Flora and Musa were never shoved to the sidelines, they got their own storylines and were never treated like extras. Honestly, what was the reason for any of this? They whitewashed Flora and Musa, they got rid of Tecna, they merged the Trix into one character (literally what the hell) and then they have the audacity to do zero research and there are still people that are telling me to give this show a chance? I'm sorry, I know there are probably people that did work hard on this show but this show should not be getting a Season 2.

I watched this show with my girlfriend and I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE IT. But I cannot stop thinking about it because I do think it had potential it's just....not there, it's just bad, it's frustrating, it really feels like most if not ALL their characterizations were held back by bloom, ESPECIALLY AS YOU MENTIONED AISHA'S. It didn't matter what a character is like if the narrative needed someone or something to boost Bloom it would do so with little regard for their character arcs or personalities...

Whoosh, throw out the bland and unlikable main character and let the other characters have a chance to shine for once. They’d certainly deserve it. Is it a little spiteful, yeah. Do I think it’s fair to do, absolutely.

I discovered your channel through Fate videos and let me just say I am hooked on your channel also I'd love to know what was your opinion on Beatrix. personally I didn't hate nor love her but I'd love to hear another opinion as she is one of the characters you didn't talk about

There were moments where I felt the writers were trying too hard with her character, like trying to assert that she’s ~different~ because she likes history but also she’s fashionable. I think stuff like that is better shown than blatantly said (and they say it about a billion times hahahah) but I actually did like Beatrix. Not so much at the start of the series, but as it progressed-definitely.

I haven’t gotten too into this show. I think I would be able to get more into it if it wasn’t based of Winx Club because I’m going to keep comparing it to the original. I wish it were an unrelated fairy show. But my biggest problem so far is Stellas character. In the cartoon she was fierce, very kind, outgoing and loyal. But in Fate (Atleast so far) she seems just mean. I’d also like too mention Terra. She’s a darling and I love that she’s plus sized. I just still don’t understand why she’s not Latina like her “cousin” Flora.

I completely agree. Fate standing alone without it being attached to Winx (the cartoon) is just weak. It’s something that has been seen over and over again. Since 2010 in teen fantasy/mystery dramas. They took something that was already special and unique and made it common.

The "Aisha needs better" reminds me of the "Bonnie needs better" and would probably remind me of so many other waisted good black characters if I didn't get tired of watching movies and the likes, as a black girl who continues to learn about societies problems and stereotypes I'm tired and would much prefer to just read a book and watch youtubers like yourself at this point. Thank you for reviewing the series so I didn't have to continue to get attached to black characters then disappointed and having to see some of my favourite childhood shows going bad.
