Mario Kart does have some advantages in this due to the concert of a car race being something people know without video game experience. The goal is clear, and people know how cars work. It's the reason anyone can pick it up. Obviously, all these other design elements are the things that make it hard to put down.

I have never played Mario Kart, but this is the first video that explained to my why many love the game. This video was better than the Extra Credits video about Mario Kart, at least from the perspective of a non-Mario Kart player. Thank you for this. Have a nice day. ^^

Really cool content! I specially like the fact you referenced a GDC talk and Jesse Schell!

Very well thought! This can be applied to any sort of game.

Great video. I do have one point of debate though. The part where you say that players can come back to Mario Kart and start making meaningful choices without learning the rules/mechanics is a bit misleading. You still have to know the worth of the power-ups/coins etc. Otherwise the choices start to lose meaning. A lot of things are intuitive and can be learnt in one session, but I would not highlight it as a major point.

Good catch! Sorry that wasn't already in there for you. Here is the link to the GDC talk by Matthias Worch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHapZXqMg9-ei9k And the Jesse Schell quote is from The Art of Game Design. A great book to check out if you're into game design/development: www.amazon.com/Art-Game-Design-Book-Lenses/dp/0123694965

Cool concept! Did you deliberately cut all your clips right before the player wiped out?

Prety sure Minecraft and Breath of the Wild benefit from this same ideas, should I go check that out before going to the village where is safe or wait until the next day to Go there? And then an story develops from this small decisions

I wanted to respond with "What about SSB?" but actually, Mario Kart wins this.

It is ironic that the blue shell is designed to remove 99% of decisions and make all those stories SUCK. ...I'm going back to F-Zero GX.

While I do agree with this I don't think this feature is unique to Mario Kart. I think a lot of other kart racers have featured the same ability to create stories, while featuring similar, and in Rare cases better gameplay (e.g. Crash team racing is better than MK64, and Sonic and Sega is better than MK Wii). Games like Speed Freaks, CTR, Wipeout, Sonic and Sega, and Snowboard kids featured the same ability to create stories, with incredibly solid gameplay design. It's actually quite a core aspect of multiplayer game design broadly, unspecific to Mario Kart entirely. Games like Towerfall and Heartstone are underpinned by the same ability to create 'stories'. I do agree with the general idea, but I think you're over thinking it, the ability for players to make decisions, providing agency without overwhelming the player has been fundamental to game design, almost since gaming's inception. Yes, Mario Kart is a great example of it's implementation, but its at the heart of board games, card games, fighting games, it's not something unique to Mario Kart at all. Much of the reason why we still play Mario Kart lies in the success of the brand as a whole, its marketing appeal, it's accessibility, family friendly tone, ease of play, it has the underpinnings of good game design, but so do many others.

sorry but I don't know anybody who played since MC 64. No idea why you think that "we all are playing that".
