About ten years ago, I had a college class called "Conceptual Storytelling". The teacher raised our expectations by telling us that if we could come up with a good pitch, he could get us a meeting with studio execs who might buy it for a massive amount of cash. He then shattered our expectations by explaining how that idea would probably end up sitting in a vault somewhere, never to be made. Or, if it ever did get made, it would be practically unrecognizable. The system isn't designed for creators. It's designed to make money. Unless your name is Quentin Tarantino, John Waters, Clint Eastwood, etc., your idea is going to be molded into something that a studio feels will make them the most profit. I hope your idea succeeds. I think it's the best way forward, letting creators make what they want to make, and letting the people decide what they want to watch.

@@enforcerridley158 A lot of movies in the past also sucked, we have just already forgotten about them because we wanted to, and never reveal their existence to new generations born at least one decade after they came out. But yes, the creators should be allowed to create their own vision because - would having more variety in mainstream films really be the end of Hollywood? I doubt it, because sometimes movies that people think will not make lots of money, actually do. That sort of turnout is not exclusive to original film properties, either. Because in 2023 alone, I saw how Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken and The Creator were original film properties with loads of potential that did not make bank, while Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Wonka were a sequel and a prequel to established film properties that were surprisingly creative, and became very successful despite having a less than stellar opening weekend. I could tell that for once, Disney and WB let James Gunn and Paul King create their vision for those films and it probably paid off for them in spite of most of their other 2023 movies bombing.

You choose something that they are pitching on that site that you wanna see made. - In turn, they get funding and get to keep their idea the way they want. Whatever gets funded to a full extent gets made and released on youtube (Probably with Subs/Patreon getting early access to that content) they're basically avoiding the major industry "Best and safe practices" so they can still make big-budget films without their vision shattered.

I love how the internet has allowed people to bypass the old systems in place for you to be able to release content. Musicians have been using it now to not have to commit to a record label so it would be great to see this be successful and give another option for people passionate about their art.
@Christopher_TG
@Christopher_TG 3 жыл бұрын
There are downsides to it, though. It's a lot easier to get into creating and publishing art nowadays thanks to how the internet has democratized content creation and distribution. But it's also much harder to stand out in that space. There is such a flood of content available to users that it's almost impossible to develop a following and get noticed unless you already have a brand. Filmmaker Lulu Wang talked about that in a roundtable discussion with five other directors hosted by the Hollywood Reporter. Her film, The Farewell, had received an offer to be distributed on a streaming service, an offer she turned down. She knew that as a young director who was just starting her career, her film would get completely swamped out and barely seen by anybody. When talking about the experience, she drew a comparison to iTunes, saying that anybody can post music to iTunes but if you don't have a brand, no one will notice you. The other problem is that the internet has also created market pressure to offer some content as cheaply as possible thanks to the proliferation of free websites like Spotify and KZbin as well as the ease of piracy. This is especially true in the music industry. Talk to any musician and they'll tell you that it's actually harder to earn a living making music today than it was 20-30 years ago. Compared to the incomes artists could make from album sales back in the day, the payouts musicians make from streaming services is pennies.
@mosesking2923
@mosesking2923 3 жыл бұрын
Christopher G I see nothing negative about what you just said. Music is now in the hands of the consumer, not the hands of the creator. Which means we as consumers vote with our wallet. It also means that we won’t settle for low rate drivel. If content creators want more money, they will have to produce more quality content. Standing out in a crowd is THEIR problem, not ours.
@Christopher_TG
@Christopher_TG 3 жыл бұрын
@@mosesking2923 Except consumers are left with fewer and fewer options as musicians increasingly drop out of what is no longer a very promising profession. That leaves only musicians who are willing to create generic pop songs that appeal to as wide a net as possible.
@mosesking2923
@mosesking2923 3 жыл бұрын
Christopher G it’s the exact opposite. There are more options than ever before. Musicians can find niches in the market that they never even knew existed. If some artists make generic content, then that is their choice to pander to the masses. It’s always been that way. But the small niches will now be catered to. That’s the beauty of capitalism. Same thing is happening to online gaming and film.

@@Axolotl_Mischief That's completely true but that doesn't change the fact that there has been a high concentration of remakes and unwanted sequels over the past decade that have not done very well because of being driven by strict limitations of the industry and pursuit of money instead of a drive from passion and creativity about the project. It makes sense that if a product reaches the largest amount of people that should make the most money, but that is a very short term perspective for a franchise and doesn't allow for full creative expression of a vision. Just because there are good remakes doesn't change the fact that there are still significant players who are making movies for the wrong reasons, and when the whole point of a movie is to entertain, and the intent of the movie shifts from being entertaining to appeasing the masses, that's a problem.

Welcome to the corporate world. Remember that executives and accountants very rarely, if ever, have hands on experience with regards to the process for people who actually have to execute the plan as well as the finer details. They do not understand that doing those things is easier said than done and much harder and slower than they would like. As shitty as it is, this is pretty much why there is always this "conflict" between execs/accountants in upper level management who don't actually understand the process and the filmmakers/writes/etc that do. Isn't just limited to film either, this happens across most other sectors as well.

It’s content created direct to consumer. It’s really going to be about quality of the product (which we know CC can do) and the price point (and how it will fluctuate over time). I like to support content creators and would much rather spend 30-40 bucks a year per creator in that community than hand it off to the CEO of a conglomerate that can offer a slightly lower price. It’s like eating locally-produced food: it may cost more but there’s a big upside to supporting your community. The concern, as ever, is what happens when it is successful? I wish them the best but I probably won't be subscribing to pay for particular shows. All that said, if they were to crowdfund a feature length project or make one & it was available for stand-alone purchase I'd be down for that. Either way I wish them success. I think they have the right idea in going around the system & playing by their own rules rather then trying to get into it & making less engaging content.

Or even, as some already commented, making a platform to solve the issue for all the small media creators like yourself... Keep on creating. If you make original sci-fi/horror videos, people will pay...

@Stellvia Hoenheim a lot of people will, and a lot of people do. There are dozens of creators on Twitch who make tens of millions a year off of good-will donations while they stream videos games. Corridor are onto something here, and I'm stoked to see where it goes :)

While I applaud the ingenuity, I feel like this is basically creating another streaming service to subscribe to in a landscape that's already getting saturated. Granted, this sounds more like What Rooster Teeth has been doing for a while now which is fair and different enough from Hulu and netflix, but now it means asking people to leave a site they're already spending all hours of the day on to go over to another. The fans get split between those who can and will undoubtedly spend the money, and those who won't or can't for whatever reason. (on a side note: I watched Rush through my PC on Go90, I didn't see any phone requirement. I just went there to support you guys, but had no interest in anything else they had to offer.)

I think you hit the nail on the head. While it might sound like a good idea on paper, at the end of the day the whole monthly subscription for video content market is extremely saturated at this point. As much as I love these guys and their content really the last thing I care for is adding onto how much money I spend every month for video content. Not to mention asking people to change platforms to see content doesn't usually go very well. It creates this big rift between the small amount of hardcore fans who will support anything and everything versus the massive majority that aren't all gung ho about throwing their money at something.

I agree 100%. It's segregating the market too much. Why pay $3.99 per month for only their content when $10-15 with Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, or anyone else gives you a TON of diverse content? It just doesn't make any sense.

I think the best way to think about this is like a Patreon for a youtuber that does reaction videos. The use Patreon as a source of additional income to allow them to commit more to the channel and those who pay money are going to be the people who are big fans of the channel already and now have a way to interact and influence in a meaningful way with a channel they really enjoy.

@@bestieswithtesties You also hit the nail :D The problem i see is that these guys are on KZbin. They are not the only ones doing this kind of Content. The only thing that makes this Channel worth watching is the Crew itself. The actuall information in the Videos is worthless many times. But cool people are everywhere on KZbin. And i would bet major money some Channels are already working on a replacement for the Content Corridor cant make after this. What i see happening is that this Channel sort of dies because the viewers go to differen Channels and the crew being left with a small community that progressfly get smaller and a dead Channel. As you said, most people already pay for 3 On Demand Sites, and are not willing to pay for yet another one. I mean, Disney + for example at least had the argument that Disney makes 50% of all Movies, so you actually get something for your Money. Same with Netflix. But i dont think many people will see the Corridor content worht the payment considering all of the above.

@@jimmy12347654 I know what you're trying to say but there are definitely way more in the porn industry. The consenting professionals you see are but the tip of the ice berg and sadly there is a HUGE amount of sex trafficking (including kids) supported (knowingly and unknowingly) by the porn industry. There are also a lot of rape videos out there too.

As a college student majoring in Film, it’s a little bit worrying to see a bunch of these studios not respecting the creativity and the original ideas of filmmaking entrepreneurs. I have quite a few ideas and stories I want to see be made into films, but I’m worried if I let those ideas fall into the hands of these giant businesses they’ll just ruin it and take away from the pure artistic side of it all. Glad to see you guys are sticking to your guns and not letting anyone change your artistic vision. Hopefully we’ll see the best version of your film here one of these days. 👍
