Good choices. Here is some ideas. 1. Plant as many drought resistant trees. mimosa tree. Build shaded nursery Green the desert 2. Dont let any water leave your property. Check damns and holding tanks. Percolate and fill the reservoirs. 3. Chop and drop. Build up the land with bio-matter. All green and brown plat stuff stays on the ground. 4. Hügelkultur is your friend do it lots There is also a govt grant for beaver damns in AZ. Its funny but true

@@copperdeserthomestead A word of advice against hugelkultur in your environment. It's a great technique in places with good water. In arid locations it's better to go down into the ground, putting the woody debris deep. The increased surface area of a raised hugel is more evaporation surface in an arid climate.

I was born in Connecticut, my two brothers were born in Massachusetts...my parents decided to move to El Paso, TX when we were still under 12, as all three of us were close in age. I don't know anything but the Desert Southwest, and now in my 60's I am very tired of it, it has worn me down, as a Gardener and as someone who Loves to be outdoors. I watch videos where folks just plant with minimal watering because of their environment, here I am strapped to the watering-can, otherwise all would be returned to the Desert in less time than a Season passes. I know we get mild Weather, and so Natural Disasters are highly unlikely, as most Storms just pass us by, but I am weary of it all. I now live in Las Cruces, NM, and it may be my last stop! Bless you and yours, it's a Harsh life in the Desert SW.

Wow, we are on a similar path except opposite directions. We are going from Arizona City Life to Texas Rural life also starting a homestead. We got bee hive, chickens, a goose and a small pond I built here in the city to get a taste of what is to come. Every few months we take our 5th wheel out to the land to work on the driveway and do dream walks similar to what you showed us, it is such a great feeling. We just completed our water well and clearing our drive way. Depending on the cost of power solar can be a very viable option for you guys, but with power lines so close might be cost savings to use utility power. Our cost to have power brought to us in Texas was going to be $25K plus monthly utility fees. I just finished designing our full off grid power system and the parts started coming in last week...

We started 2.5 years ago. I see some great advice here. If u have money then no problems. The single best thing we did in our hot dry climate was starting our food forest. But but but, if u want to save years plant what grows real easy in your location, then incorporate other items. If your neighbour says grow passion fruit because they grow like weeds here. Then u grow heaps of them. Then u create shade , the beginning of an ecosystem. We found bananas grow like nuts. We had 6 half dead plants. We natured them and now we have hundreds as our basics. We have hundreds of passion fruit, grapes . All the above cost zero. We have added about 80 other fruits and half are doing well. Growing annuals are tough early on. Our place is completely transforming right now. Another year or two it will be incredible. We grew hundreds if not thousands of nitrogen fixes which created shade. Almost cost zero as we grew everything from seed or free cuttings. We grew QLD arrowroot and pigeon peas for nitrogen fixes, simply because they grew like weeds here. We plant, mulch with weeds or grass clippings and boom. Heat is a massive problem for us and growing 10 things early on and creating shade has been the difference between us and the other 100 people trying to do this in our district. Good luck. Trees trees trees, whether fruit, or nitrogen fixing , this will be the answer in a couple of years.

Let me tell you that LIFE ITSELF can be overwhelming. The best part is that you're all making the choice to change your lives and become more self-sufficient. It's not for everybody, but I DO believe that your sons will grow up feeling blessed for the experience of learning to be self-sufficient. Hopefully you don't try to do too much at any one time... and hopefully you can drill a well on your property, then create your own power using solar panels since they really make sense on an individual basis. Everything will work out... your sacrifices now will help create a wonderful bond amongst your family members. All the best to you.

I've been living off grid for going on eight years now... if you can refrain from going to town, you will do great; however, if solitude isn't your liking, you will only destroy what your starting, unless you have money to burn... Learn to stock up, and double up on main power parts, generators, inverters, and above all, water. Learn how to use a gun, and be ready for Anything. Teach your children the dangers of the area you live in, and what to do in those situations. Never take anything for granted, if its going to brake down, its going to happen at the most unconvenient times, like weekends or holidays. Backup systems are a must. If you make it, you'll love your lifes.

I envy you. When I was young I had a horse ranch and it was the best life ever. It’s a great life for kids and can teach them so much. When I moved from my home state I was initially looking for land until I thought about my age and what would be necessary. It was my “come to Jesus” moment. I bought in town and farm my city lot instead. I live very rural so it isn’t like living in a big city at all. But my dreams of living on more land is still there but at 75 I must be satified with what I have. When I am is high mountain desert too and I love it.

Thank you for sharing and the very best to you and your family in your new adventure. As a Floridian who lives 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico my escape is also to the tranquility of my homestead in south east Arizona. The land will welcome you and your return to what I consider a very magical place, barren and isolated yet so full of life. Kudos to you and your husband for providing for your children, that which few will ever experience.

New subscriber! So cool, you've got guts! We live in Rio Rancho with 2 kids and life is such a grind, we hardly have time for one another. Good for you and I can't wait to watch more.

I grew up on a lot,of average and my mom let my sister move on it. My sister destroyed the house I wanted to buy the land she wouldn’t sell to us. Then she lost it from taxes. I grew up on a dairy farm in Calif on fifty acres. So we found some land in Arizona with a house which needs a lot of work. My husband and I have lots of experience building . It has been on the market for a while. So wish us luck in getting it. I know you will succeed In your homestead you both have such a positive attitude.

I am homesteading in N AZ. The peace I feel when I leave S. AZ and head to my land is so satisfying. I've been working the land, fencing, building structures etc for the last 5 years. It's not easy running a business and then traveling N to build. I/we, my tribe, head N about every 7 weeks and spend between 3 and 7 days. Slowly but surely. Congratulations on your decision. I look forward to watching your progress.

Very nice. We lived in Arizona about 30 years ago. Home schooled the children. (It's a wonderful life for children) Had some great gardens, raised milk goats, and chickens. I wish you well 🙏

Check out Wild Wonderful Off Grid. They are a family of five that are doing the same thing. They are almost done with the home and are very successful.

I think at your elevation juniper would grow well it should thrive in your location and it will, help with any soil erosion problems you might have. It makes for a good hot clean burning fuel source as well
