Damn, I'm in Arizona myself, having a hell of a hard time getting this going. Envious of everyone coming out of state who is able to lol. Congrats though, hope it turns out how you want it to.

We have not started homesteading yet, but it's our huge dream that we are trying to figure out to make happen. But I am so glad I found this channel, it's so inspiring to me! We have lived in a lot of places in the US, but the Desert has been calling me, it just needs to call my husband now 😆 Your desire to start homeschooling sounds like ours, with your son. Four of our five kids are boys, and being able to let them run and be wild , is so helpful for teaching them😍. I totally resonate with the way you homeschool your kids, even the books you referenced and curriculum. (I love the book, Call of the Wild and Free too). But I am also loving ll the homestead stuff!

Age might change your mind on manual laundry. A machine to do only washing takes little electric, to add the machine is not constant it is occasional, (you can pick the best time). Hanging to dry after a hard spin in the washer is still little effort and efficient.

For toilet; a rocket stove made of concrete blocks can get rid of solids very quick. wrap every solid dump into a grocery bag , double for insurance . Do a double block rocket stove out of concrete blocks. make screens out of wire rabbit cage material that will insert into the stove . Get the stove burning hot. place the screen into the rocket stove with bag of waste already in it . Stoke the rocket stove up with twigs or any fuel , propane will work . Google incinerator toilet to see principle. Cheesecloth will also work to do the burn process. You can loose the separator and just go into a section of game bag material. We are not sure what kind of hunter hubby is , he might have a lot of game bag cloth laying around. Yes, i have lots laying around. That way makes a portable hand held bidet useable, which makes toilet paper use at a minimum or not even necessary ( usb charged on amazon 30 bucks).

No rooster yet but if one of the hens tries to brood we’ll probably get one so we can let her raise some chicks

Wishing you the best on your homesteading journey! It is a tough start, but so rewarding once things start falling in place. In the desert it's even tougher... so don't bust yourselves up, when things don't turn out how you want it to the first time. Observe and interact with the environment and accept and receive feedback from it. Sometimes we try to force our way on nature, but Nature teaches us very fast if we are willing to listen. Make slow and steady adjustments. Faith foremost and the rest will follow. God bless you. Grant and Annegret, from the Namib Desert.

I just started homeschooling my son (12), and my daughter (10) wants to do the same. I had a hard time in school, and they are both so artistic. It's so difficult to watch them struggle. My son has done a complete 180 since starting homeschooling, and I am so proud of him. We also bought 40 acres and will be there full-time in the next few years. I work in Healthcare Administration and WFH, so homesteading and homeschooling just make sense.

Amazing... if anyone can do a good job with homeschooling, it is you and Jagg and of course, your beautiful boys. I am so proud of you for encouraging individuality. They will grow up to be well-rounded, kind, respectful adults.

where at in the desert? if you're down south in say southern nevada, AZ those areas, not worth the hassle unless you want a short grow season form like end of feb to like mid june, short daylight,a s if daylight isn't short enough.. in the summer it all goes away, no way to prevent that unless you have a climate controlled grow house that can stand the climate, the wind, the sun, monsoons... you sound like you might know but maybe you don't.. outdoors the insect are vicious, the bad ones, aphids so forth so b ready for all that the mites.. the birds are ferocious as well, soon as a tomato anything is bite sized they eat it.. oh boy .. fall grow season is too short as well, gets cold and daylight is like 7 hours a day, never really direct, green house is really the only viable way.. then you can grow over the winter spring and fall .. but summer? sure if you want to grow cactus and aloe vera, maybe grow azul agave and make tequila? hale I dunno but its tough I do know that I tried for years, used light blocking material the works, I sorta gave up got tired of fighting the bugs .. you everything is hungry in the desert, real hungry. . then if you do get things to grow you need something to pollinate as well .. .. and if you don't believe me then welp just drive around your area, see how many gardens there are? get on youtube and look, see if there are any gardens? there is a place in Las vegas some sort of gardener with a large garden that allows tours what not, I'd bet you can get a lot of info from them .. also, make no mistake it's not the heat that destroys these plants, it's the wretched dryness and direct dose of radiation that does everything in . . good luck man

I agree with making your family and work priority. An idea for mulch, or compost is ask if you can collect coffee grounds from work. Im bringing in a 3 gallon bucket with a lid for the grounds at my work

Would you consider an atmospheric water generator? Right now they cost the same as a well in some markets. I am considering a small one just for water security.
@farmerjhemp2 ай бұрын
The generate so little water if you're in a very dry climate. At least that's what I saw on a different homesteaders channel they got one gallon after 2 weeks and it was a substantial size unit.
@copperdeserthomestead2 ай бұрын
We’ll look into them. I think it depends on the humidity levels so we’ll see.
