Why We're Obsessed With Conspiracy Theories

There have always been, and probably always will be, conspiracy theories, but we’ve certainty seen a dramatic increase this year. Misinformation around the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic have created page after internet page of conspiracy theories. And the protests following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police have also generated a whole host of conspiracies.
On this episode, we’re going to take a data driven look at conspiracies theories, who believes them and why. We’ll get scientific answers to some of the most mysteries questions surrounding conspiracy theories.
Just a note, we originally recorded this episode last year, but, as we take the week off to celebrate the holiday with our families, we think this episode deserves a re-listen during, especially at this moment in our society.

My best friends used to be so fun to hang out with now you can't even have a conversation with him without him bringing up a conspiracy theory about governments or China or pedophile political shit it's like dude who gives a fuck like can we talk about you know how was your day or you know any new hobbies. It literally got so bad I had to drop him out of my life cause I think the dude just went insane

While insightful, I can't help but think this 'rationalism' is an ideological circle jerk. I'm pretty sure you can have a deep understanding in stories & mythology whilst retaining a discerning eye over truth through empirical, rational or whatever process is needed to achieve real results. I would question those who worship rationalism or portray an opposing political movement as irrational if they know what drives this mindset, for you can rationalise many things.
