Hello all. To answer a few questions: the little sailboat is an o'Pen Bic sailboat. It's 100lbs and stows nicely under our boom. It's a great way for the kids to learn to sail as they probably won't on Archer. The Drone we use is a DJI Mavic Pro 2. And yes, this is before Covid, so it's a little old. We are trying to release videos weekly and to catch up to present day within 6 months. The good news is we can skip our boring weeks. Thanks for watching!

Given where I've made money in my life, all I'd need is a Starlink dish and my income is secured. I would be able to monitor the markets. The other source of income is the "turnaround season" here in Alberta, Canada that runs from Spring into early Fall with it being quite barren for work during the winter. I can snowboard but I'm not super obsessed about snowboarding which is really the only Canadian winter activity I ever found "fun". So every winter I end up piling on the pounds and have to burn them off every spring.

I did something similar with my 2 sons. Sold everything, and did a multi-year road trip with my old ford pickup, a camper and small enclosed trailer. 2 years in north America and now in Europe for the last 4 where we now have a permanent residence. I am a single father with 2 adopted sons, and the main reason for doing this initially was to find a way to bond with the older boy who suffered from moderate attachment disorder. And it has worked beyond all wild expectations, and we have both made lifetime friends and made lifetime experiences. Worth every sacrifice and risk made.

I got my girls PADI certified in Bequia when they were 10 and 12, they still love to dive at 16 and 18. A great choice to introduce your boys to it. Our catamaran is the best "bad decision" I ever made. So many told me it was a foolish choice. Yet, it has taken me and my wife, my girls, my extended family, and our friends to amazing places we would have never seen without it. Yep it's a lot of work some days, but the rewards far outweigh the work. Cheers to you fellow fool, you've also made a great "bad decision"!

I found your channel late in my sailing video watching/time wasting/dreaming youtube rabbit hole activities; and you guys are the closest phenotype I could identify with; a lovely family and focused on all the right things... I know how much work goes into the videos, so thank you for them - the one in Fiji in the remote island brought tears to my eyes when I remembered how lovely the people were when we visited Fiji; and why as lovely as FP is, Fiji is still somehow more special... Good for you, the reason you state as Number 1 for heading out to sea is so true. Kids develop and grow so quickly and many leave this development to "babysitters" in pursuit of money and the next greatest must have item. Its not their fault it sadly is the conventional way of doing things. You will NEVER regret your decision to devote your young lives to raising your children! CONGRATS for realizing this before its to late and I wish you all safe travels and an incredible adventure.

Thank you for showing me Rangiroa - both the pass and what the lagoon was like inside. Not getting to go inside the pass on a cruise 4 yrs ago always was a big disappointment for me...just too rough that day for the cruise boat to go in and it waited nearly 6 hrs on the outside before cancelling the stop. I've sailed for 35yrs the west coast of Canada. Thanks once again - you made my day.

Outside the box thinking and action leads to some pretty wonderful places and experiences in life. We did a year backpacking trip around the world when are kids were 9 and 11 years old. Like you said... when they still want to hold your hold your hand and just hang out with their parents. Our budget meant hostels in Asia, So America and Africa with no Europe visit. We trekked the Himalayas, saw the pyramids in Egypt, walked Iguazu Falls in Argentina and so much more. But, in the end it was simply having that time together that was the greatest experience. Now I hope to have those grown kids join sails in whatever part of the world they can catch up to me in. Love watching you guys soak up time with each other.

Elizabeth seems to be enjoying things more. In some of the earlier posts of this trip, mostly on the Caribbean side, she seemed annoyed from time to time. Assuming it had to do with being cooped up with 3 boys for extended periods of time. Now she seems at peace and happy.

Took your advice from previous episode post-reply and made that call to sunsail for sailing school. Getting the family from lake to blue water has begun. So far, I’m the lonely captain with a dream. Family supports my week of licensing then chartering after. This episode of “how you do it” landed nicely with me. With my interest level, I’m wanting more facts....cost of built catamaran like yours versus all the other catamarans, running costs, etc. Even if I sell the cars, furniture, and stop the memberships, I’m still convinced you already made it big in your careers and have financial confidence. I got the dream....need help with long term vision. Helps with my reality check with what’s possible. Love the vids. Love the content. Love your music and editing. And love the happy family time. Be safe. I’d ask for a video showing all the tough days, but sounds like thats coming.
@TheSailingFamily3 жыл бұрын
Good on you! That’s fantastic to hear. And maybe your question helped us make this video as you’re not the only one who wants to know these things. They say the average cost is about 10% of the value of the boat. For $300k you can get a decent used catamaran, so budget for $30k/year to maintain it (upgrades, repairs, insurance, etc). Obviously it varies on where you go, but that’s a good guess. Our biggest expense is food. We anchor 99% of the time and that’s free. We have some toys (surf and kite and scuba gear), and we keep touristy stuff as a special occasion. To start you should think about staying in the Caribbean. It’s short day hops and you can pick cheaper counties (Bahamas, Spanish Virgins, etc). Lots of ways to do this on a budget. Shoot Seth an email via our website and happy to chat. Cheers!

Love the video as always. One thing I never hear about on sailing channels is health care coverage. When we work we are accustomed to our employers providing coverage programs. But what do you do with a family sailing the world without an employer’s program?
@TheSailingFamily3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. As Americans, our health care system is a disaster and, we had to find some type of “travel insurance” coverage. We landed on the IMG plan called the “Patriot.” It’s roughly $350/mo for our entire family and ensures we have pre-existing coverage if something really bad were to happen. But all the doctors visits and dental work is out of pocket. Thankfully, costs are quite reasonable elsewhere, even in NZ and Australia. Hope that helps!
