As the sole survivor and last child of a family of 5, who took to the sea similar to your family, during the 1960s and 70s, I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have had such a special youth. I still get a laugh (and a tear or two) when asked to tell about our adventures. The added love and respect I have for my parents for giving our family such a wonderful experience is beyond measure. Wishing all of you safe ,fun, adventures. It really is true that life really boils down to simply building as many happy memories as possible. It is wonderful that technology allows you to share this great adventure with the rest of us. Love and respect, Ed

I am 51 and I feel like I am losing my mind. I am tired of living this so called life. Work, living in Wisconsin, Cold and essentially unhappy. My body is breaking down and I hurt so much during the winter. I envy everyone who has been able to escape on the sea, but I am unable to pull the trigger myself. My wife is not a fan of the water and I just feel like I am going to die one day and never live my dream. I am grateful for all of you sharing your ocean lives with us. Its not living it myself, but it helps. THANK YOU!!

Hey don't say like that... there's always a solution. In My opinion you should move to Florida/Hawaii and buy a nice cottage in a town with waterfront view..and live off your retirement income and enjoy your life the fullest way possible maybe buy a small motorboat it would be much better. Just go for it There is only one life you got. Everything is possible. Believe in yourself. Best of luck 👍

My husband and I sold our house and are now living full time in a small motorhome (I think they are called RV in the US). At the moment we are in Sweden escaping all the coronavirus restrictions elsewhere in Europe. I just love this carefree lifestyle and I doubt we'll have a house again. So perhaps this is something your wife could be interested in? Btw we are almost your age, 48 and 49.

It sounds like you’ve outgrown your current life - which is normal. Keep reaching for what inspires you. Move closer to the water - any water - + maybe the wife will see how much happier you are. Good luck 👍

I’m only 2 mins into this video and I can relate so much. My husband and I are in our late 30’s. My husband is a small business owner and the poor man works himself into the ground. I’m truly praying for a change in our life. Less complicated and more simple is my desire. My hubby just has to see it also. This video was encouraging. ❤

@@Sommers234 when you have wife that's ... Number 1 afraid to go out further than the break line ..... Number 2 two kids that she has steadfastly refused to let go beyond the breakline and last but not least you have a job with more pay and benefits that you with a high school g e d could ever hope in your wildest dreams could ever hope to have , that's reasons why you can't just say to hell with it and go sailing off over the horizon . I did 10 in the marines and was on more ships and sailed across more blue water than most live aboards will ever see so it would be no great culture shock to me to see a shark longer than my boat.

The kids have no idea what a advantage in life they will have from so much care and effort and love going into their development. I know the midlife crisis.. I feel the same and this feeling came out 5 years ago. It's like chasing money to buy things that let us appear better at the society but in reality it's just something we don't even need. We are always busy running here and there, raising money but once we stop to think the life isn't satisfing as it should be. It's true, money doesn't make happiness but for sure it helps to realize your dreams. I feel like in a gold cage and this pandemic helped me to really stop for awhile and think more deeply about what I should do in order to change things just for myself. A big change that in your case it was shared with your wife 'cause she felt the same as you.. I guess that's the hardest part for many people. Risk it all and wipe their previous life and convince their sweet half that will be a better life. xD

75 is a respectable age and it is easy to believe a power boat is easier and more comfortable but not really true unless you have a very large yacht.on a sailboat the sails keep you from swinging all over the place .Also power boats burn a huge amount of fuel ,you are going very long distances and being closer to nature you will be aware of all that pollution humans have inflicted to our world and will be sorry you spend your last years adding to it .A sailboat is art on the go,it makes you young again and always.

It is so important for our souls and mental health to LIVE our lives and it feels like we are told our whole lives to ‘follow in the system’ just to ‘get by’ .. I agree it’s not all about climbing the corporate/capitalist ladder. Glad I found you guys! Sailing la vagabonde has also had a huge impression on how we choose to experience our lives!

Complexity. Keith is a master of mastering complex systems. That is highly admirable and a rare skill among humans. Most of us come from families that approach life with a high degree of fear, and that keeps us stuck in ruts. And the longer we stay in those ruts the sicker we become. Making a decision to exit a big rut is a major thing, and once done it shows us the way to create our own life circumstances. Of course the element of luck also has its place in the mix. In my case I wanted immersion experiences among indigenous people living n the amazonian rainforest, and in my fifties I realized that. Everyone will have their own way of realizing their dream of escaping routine predictable living.

@@simplyhandy2769 Depends on where you are from and what flag you are flying. If you fly a US flag you have to follow US gun laws while in international waters. My father will be living with us so we can’t go full time till he’s gone. Our plan is under ten years. Life still has to happen on land for us. It’s the same thing not connecting with each other, not listen to each other, not connecting with ourselves. Living for money and not being inspired. It made me cry knowing that you two feel the same way. Montana was our home for years now live in Astoria, Oregon. Learning to dive, sail, and all the good stuff. We feel more inspired now than ever! My first boat was bought with the help of Ms Lyra Holt Dean. Sailing is thousands of years old and we continue this long-lasting, intriguing and at the same time dangerous tradition! Throughout history sailing has helped various civilizations to develop and prosper as people sailed accross oceans to settle in new undiscovered areas. Each time we set a sail it’s as if you could feel the same excitement, uncertainty and craving for adventure as it used to be thousands of years ago. In a way sailing is like a bridge connecting us with times long lost.

The boat was an absolute haven during covid, but I had to close my business, and by 2021 needed to work (student loans) so I took another "corporate job" down in Florida where my family is from. Of course, the corporate job isn't working out, so now I'm back to circling the wagons to "sell everything" again (including the motoryacht now on the hard in WA) to buy a sailing cat and head out. Luckily, I've learned from all this and now know how to make income while cruising. Hubby works on yachts, professionally, so now it's just a matter of making the plan, finding the new boat, and doing this.

I’m so happy that y’all took the risk, and made this happen...The day to day monotony of business, 3 kids, wife is exactly what you said a “Rat Race” we spend soo much money just to live . It’s actually counter productive , we live in Hamptons, Long Island NY..I have never sailed, I always viewed sailing as tree huggers lmao!! But I love the idea of making the best from our natural resources , Wind & solar. At 42 yrs old I’m ready for Adventure!!! Cheers to Sailing Zatara for sharing your lives with us . May God continue to Bless you and your yacht

If I want to take the first step into this kind of off grid lifestyle I need to equip myself with the basic survival skills and knowledge to sustain this kind of life. Honestly not everyone is cutout to be living the off grid lifestyle!! And its true once age catches up with all of us we need to settle down somewhere accessible and permanent!!

Love hearing your story. Inspiring. My brother bought a boat when he was in his early 20s, a 7 person rec boat, for skiing and tubing. When he was 25 he Bought a bigger boat, a 11 person, and named it “Quarter Life Crisis”. Lol

Yeh, it's been frustrating with my kids' friends and their parents. It got to the point where at every school event it was just the Moms talking about their work. and everyone was on their phones. and I had this weird feeling. I started hating going to school events. My daughter is now graduating (with no ceremony). We feel that we need to move. I hate to say it but around here there kind of snobbish. While they're sad about graduating, my daughter and i are like-we need something different. So I can understand that feeling of wanting something different.

Kieth, I wanted to thank you for being a mentor. I decided to start fasting after watching your comments about how you lost your weight three weeks ago. I just got my Amazon order in fro 6 pairs of compression socks to prevent my legs from swelling. As I was about to put on my 1st pair, I fast. it has been 22 days without any food now and I feel better than I have in years, swelling in my legs, my gout, and arthritis are gone! my skin looks 5 years younger and I have lost 40lbs so far! I can't tell you how grateful I am. Your strength has added 10 years to my life! May all your days blessed with sunshine and smiles :) Tom

God bless you guys! Amazing. You're right there with your kids now, raising them instead of letting the American school system raise them and that can't be a bad thing. OMG and how many husbands and wives have just thrown in the towel without trying something new? It's so good to see you guys being successful and pulling your family back together!! Amazing!

I’m in my early career and already feel the sadness of working a 9-5 40/hrs a week and I truly believe these next generations will change that lifestyle.

Thanks so much to this family and I hope they continue to be such a great example of a what a healthy and fulfilled family should be.

I always wondered sitting here with my life at the moment, i work 7am to 6:30-7 at night, single dad, barely enough time to wash cloths and make kids dinner before falling asleep... i work so damn hard everyday and struggle to make it. How do people make it for themselves like this? How did they afford school? do they have family that help them build credit, pay for school? Wish I had done whatever this man did to make his family so secure. Hats off to you sir! One day I would like to buy a boat I Can afford to fix up and do the same! Inspiration !!!!!!!!!
