I'm a Christian and I have been prejudiced towards people with niqabs before (I haven't actually spoken to anyone with niqab in my life, and they are banned in my country). But you do seem like a very nice person and you really opened my eyes up to the other side of the story. Via Media hello I’m Muslim woman who covers we are human like anyone else everybody has different personalities and characteristic what’s annoying is when people think we less then human or living being. We have families, we eat, pay bills , we are happy at times , sad and we have emotions but sometimes people at like we are not human and they are ignorant asking dumb questions. Wearing Niqab is to please Allah SWA, not people; what people may feel or think it’s on them that is nothing to do with us.. .. -the same way I don’t feel disrespected by someone semi naked... The same rule applies!! -In my case; I do it for my protection as a Muslim woman.. I feel more comfortable and modest going outside with niqab.. “no one said is easy ... it’s a challenge”.- But, Allah knows our struggles.. .. Alhumdulillah for niqab .!!!

Hello Katie. It is a matter of perception and individual choice. Of course I respect your opinion, in fact for the major part of my life I have been of the same opinion. But the more I meditated and tried to understand religion, I finally started to realized the crux of covering up is "humility". Months of pondering made me acknowledge the fact that humility and spirituality go hand and hand and one cannot be arrogant and be close to God at the same time. The more one covers up, the more they feel humbled by their appearance, it's not appealing anymore and it detaches the person from the love of this temporary world. Though live in a "muslim" country, I have seen many many women in seven star places, being condescending towards women who dressed humbly and it always ALWAYS made me wonder "how can you judge someone based on the brands they wear?" and I never liked that biased treatment. Our world has become so material that we aren't stopping to really understand a person before passing comments on them. I've seen women mistake a random humbly dressed woman as a "servant" with the family, and these superficial assumptions really surprise me. Same goes for men they are supposed to dress humbly and NOT stiffen their spines and necks when they walk, and their nose shouldn't be up in the air. Hence it all comes down to preventing arrogance. Women love to look pretty and somewhere in their hearts they do want compliments. And I'm not ashamed to admit these things. And hence the covering up, because God is like we don't NEED validation, the only one whose validation a Muslim seeks is Allah. And hence, covering up is one of the "tests" of this world. To practice that I don't need to wear a certain brand to feel good or confident, I don't NEED anyone to tell me I'm pretty to think so of myself, I don't need a mirror to reassure me of my looks. I don't NEED looks. The material world is exploiting people's mindset and the need to compete with others and looking better than others is becoming such an obsession to the brink of narcissism, and causing "less" fortunate to compare themselves to "more" fortunate, creating a BIG barrier between rich an poor, fat and skinny, advertisers defining beauty, etc. We judge people by their clothes for instance, and THEN decide to talk to them. It's a pathetic system. We NEED major covering up for both men and women. This is why men are encouraged to grow humble-looking beards in Islam, it covers up an attractive face, and to keep their eyes lowered, and to wear a loose dress, and keep their dress a bit over the ankle, like construction workers, because it would remind them that no amount of money in their bank puts them above a laborer. These are the reminders set for us by Allah to always look at and remain humble and practice equality. So we can remember that everyone must be treated equal, so we don't judge by appearances, so no one feels intimidated by anyone else, or feels that a person is hard to approach because of a superficial barrier. A servant should be able to sit beside their master comfortably, and at the same level. In the end, when we die, we will take none of our belongings with us, and they will not matter to us, we will be wearing a white loose shirt, our whole body shall be covered in the most humble way, and our flesh shall be consumed by the earth. Rich and poor alike. Now that these reminders are there, it is up to us to be reminded or to refuse the reminder. Which means not just wearing humility, but practising humility is necessary as well. And Allah has forbidden an arrogant person from entering Paradise. I hope this can give you another perspective. Thank you for putting your thoughts into words, so I could share mine with you. Allah made us all beautiful because he is beautiful and he is the Almightly Creator who's creations are not to be compared with and who's creations are perfect. That's why there is no such thing where beautiful women cover, not beautiful do not. This is nonsence because all women should be protected in islam. Because Allah created ALL women perfectly and beautifully. So covering is not for certain people. Covering is meant to be for all women and men. As for covering for women our examples are Prophet's wives who wore the niqab and in the Qur'an we(women) were ordered to follow them and indeed Allah is the Protector, The most Wise and The most Loving.

I remember when I first started using it was challenging. While I loved it the muslim community wasn't warm to it. I even went to a khutbah and the imam said Niqaabis are stifled ( May Allah make his grave spacious and forgive him of his sins Ameen). When they came by us, one of us would let down her outer garment from her head over her face, and when they had passed on, we would uncover our faces. I don’t mean to offend anybody, but to answer to “Would you specify what the western values are?”. It’s about recognition and identification as a person/individual. It’s not about how attractive you are. You are free to cover your body, but I don’t agree with covering your face. One side of showing your face is that it specifies who you are, what your feelings are, your ethnicity (which is incredibly interesting and not discriminatory), you gestures and your attitude towards people, which (accept it or not) are the key for building a network, finding people you like and want hang out with, sending messages and tell the world who you are. Also, you may not hide a gun under your niqab but surely I’ve cought twice a niqabi in a shop stealing things and hiding them under her niqab. If you hurt a person or make an accident and fly away, nobody will ever recognize you and you’ll remain unpunished. I don’t obviously mean that niqabis are robbers/bad people, but when the topic “security” comes in, this is an example why. Yes, the western culture is about freedom of choice, but part of it is also about having a physical identification and be recognizable. Everything has a limit: if I’ll ever go to Saudi Arabia (just an example), I’ll be happy to cover myself to not offend Saudi’s culture, if that is required. In the same way, a Saudi coming to my country (Italy) should show the same respect and leave her face unconvered. In many institutions here in Italy, such police stations, offices, banks and public institutions, it has become forbidden to go in with your face fully covered. And believe me, if something ever happens to you in Italy and would like to go to the police, you will want to uncover your face rather than be kicked out. I would like muslims showed the same respect for the western culture to the same extent they require it from us.

As a niqabi moving to the west, I was told that I would just attract more gazes due to the Niqab and that no one really cares to look at a Muslimah with Hijab as their men have more attractive things to look at. I have heard this too sometimes. My personal experience is that I still got unwanted comments about my looks etc when I was dressing the same but face showing ( no makeup, no flashy things...) So there is still that risk of fitna and other people coming to your space. And wouldn't these people say that hijabi sister (in her sharia clothing) is attracting gazes too with her outfit cos it will always be different from the general Western dress? People also falsely think that non-muslim/muslim men wouldnt watch them cos they can watch the half-dressed ones. Modesty is in fashion now and they are trying to make it attractive in a bad way and many men still feel modest woman is more attractive. Then again I would also say that we dont wear the niqab only for the sake of men not seeing us but as a means to feel the closeness to Allah and to be aware of Him and our actions. It's not all always about men :)

Hello, I'm not Muslim but I do not think these kind of comments from others are worth your energy. Wear what you are comfortable wearing no matter where you are. If you want a hijab wear it, if you want a niqab wear it. I would say for me personally you would attract my passing interest if I walked past you but not in a negative way. Here is my American Atheist take. 1. The security risk and i.d.ing someone, if you wore a one layer more sheer niqab than they shouldn't have a problem with it at all (but they probably will). 2. As for it being oppressive, well yes it is when forced upon women like any other thing, but it could also create a sense of peacefulness in others. Personally, at 35 I am just finding clothes I am comfortable in thanks mostly to the internet. 3. You communicate well wearing one obviously or else we wouldn't be watching youtube videos. I don't always hear the best and I have no problem, so unless the person needs to read lips, most people shouldn't have an issue. 4. Acceptance from others, well frankly I think its selfish to demand other people live to my standards just as I don't want to live by theirs.

It's not just about how a woman feels in it or if she is forced. The concept behind it is sexist inherently. If a woman chooses it willingly and enjoys it doesn't mean it isn't sexism. No, dear, it's not that there are no men in the West. It is that culture is different. Men in the West KNOW that rape is wrong. It may still happen, but it is not encouraged, applauded or condoned like it is in Muslim societies. We still have a ways to go in the whole "she deserved it because she was looking sexy" problem, but compared to Islam we are significantly advanced. Don't you see that by wearing hijab you are AGREEING that it is a woman's fault for being attacked if she isn't dressed appropriately? You can argue all day long that men still have standards placed on them but if that were true the concept of covering wouldn't exist at all in the first place.

The idea that women’s bodies are inherently sexual, but men’s bodies are not (at least not to a similar degree) plays into the prejudice that sex is something that only men want, and only women provide. Women by themselves don’t have any sexual agency or sexual desires, so there’s no need to hide men from the gaze of women - no temptation results anyway. This is factually incorrect and sexist. The idea that women should be held responsible for men’s sexuality rather than let men by themselves take responsibility for themselves is also deeply sexist. I’m a heterosexual man. I’m responsible for my own behavior in every way. That remains precisely equally true regardless of whether the women in my vicinity is wearing burqa or being completely nude. I reject the idea that sexual temptation is a sin in the first place. This demonization of perfectly normal human sexuality is by itself harmful. Behavior can be wrong, but merely feeling whatever it is you’re feeling can’t by itself be wrong. I reject the strongly associated idea that consensual sex between adult human beings is in any way wrong. Adult human beings own their own bodies and have the right to do what they want with those bodies as long as their actions do not harm others without consent. We don’t require the “stamp of approval” from God, or from a priest in the form of “marriage” in order to be allowed to have sex. I think especially the forms of clothing that veils the face act as both a practical and emotional barrier between the women wearing it and the rest of society. islam is misogynistic: Treats women as commodities or at least as something that is impure and inferior to men and who must submit to his will. Has a prophet who has gone on record and stated that most of the people in hell will be women and that an "impure" woman will drag with her, her father, brother, husband and even son to the pits of hell! Claims to treat women equally, but allows them no freedom outside their house. Makes it mandatory for women to be accompanied by a man she knows (mahram). Makes it the woman's responsibility to not 'distract' and 'seduce' men by exposing themselves. Allows 4 wives to man but only one husband to a woman. Even in heaven, gives the pious woman her man, but 72 virgins to the man! Considers the testimony of a man to be twice as strong as that of a woman..... and many more.

Walaikum salam dear sister, JizaqoumAllahu khairun for your video. Mash Allah I am always pleased to see a sister demonstrating her obedience to Allah by wearing the niqaab. As munaqaba women we recieve many comments and sister , in the words of a wise man (whom I happen to be married to ) if we stop to throw a stone to every dog in the street who barks as we walk by, the stones will be sold in the market and at a high price. let me encourage you that it is the Sunnah of our Prophet Salalahu alaiyhi wa salam to not answer to every ignorant person, not answer to the arguers and just be busy with ourselves and our ibaadah, cleaning and clearing our intention for Allah as we wear His gift to us. Not answering the ignorant and staying away from people who wish to involve you in fruitless arguing will make you higher and give you dignity. Secondly it must be understood that first and foremost we wear our hijab (including the niqaab) as we do as a demonstation of our submission to Allah as the women of the sahaba did When Ayat Al Hijab came down the women pulled the cloaks from their heads down over their faces as an act of obedience and out of submission to the ir Lord. So first and foremost, When Muslims challenge me that perhaps it not so necessary in the West to wear the cover that we do, I say, that When we are Muslim, Wherever we are on His earth we have an obligation to obey Him, whether we are in Finland, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan America or Wherever...we are on the Land of Allah and people submitted to Allah we must obey His order to cover as we are ordered in the Quran which is to be covered completely....what a Beautiful gift alhumdulilah. It is not so much because we are in a country where there are men...with or without feeeling but moreover because we have been ordered as believing women to do so.:)

I'm not even Muslim (not even religious) but I admire your practice of wearing niqab and to be modest. I actually hate that the concept of privacy or 'purdah' is totally gone in the West. I want to wear more modest clothing but I don't dare. I admire you for standing up for your beliefs and values. Actually I think a lot of western clothing objectifies women. On the whole difficult to communicate aspect, I would like to agree that it can make it difficult. I suppose you can say something is wrong with me, I have had social anxiety for a good amount of my life and am finally starting to see it improve. Even so, I rely on faces a lot in communication to feel comfortable. People can hide what they are feeling, but their faces reveal what they are thinking. If someone is annoyed with me but is hiding it, I can usually tell, and without that visual cue I can't tell. Not having that could make me get extreme anxiety, because I will be constantly questioning everything I say because of the possible thoughts and hidden reactions. This is no argument against the niqab, just wanted to add a small perspective into the void of how it can cause social fear, perhaps even acute fear in normal people. I can also understand how people might be uncomfortable in general with the niqab or hijab. The covering of hair (for women) being god's law is Abrahamic in nature. Jewish women very strict in their faith do this with wigs once married. I have not seen Christian women do it (with my own eyes), but it exists as they do sell Christian veils for everyday wear (some I find super beautiful because I'm a sucker for lace). All three religions have this rule, but the ones who follow it tend to be the ultra religious in this day and age, which is likely where the discomfort comes from. The view of the ultra religious in the west (by the more secular) is not the fondest, because the ultra religious tend to believe their religion is superior to the point where if you don't believe it your good character doesn't matter, you are a vile thing deserving of hell. In my experiences with these kinds of people I have been met with looks of pure disgust and hatred presumably because I did not fit their ideal view of a woman. That was a really long way of trying to explain that the way of dress may be associated with the behavior and the things that come from it, thus making people hate it. I personally believe that I may be guilty of this as well, as I dislike all headcoverings used for religious purposes. Respect your right to wear it, but can't stop myself from not liking it (mostly due to the origin). Super duper sorry for the long comment! I just had a lot to say, and don't really know how to close it off now.... so with the risk of possibly offending you, I have to say that I imagine you to be really beautiful to match your personality (so tempted to not include that, but conquering the anxiety one sentence at a time :) ). Hi, actually I was curious how people wearing niqabs eat and I got through your video. Please note this is not a hatred comment but I want to explain something about the security risk you mentioned here. Recently in my country SriLanka there was a huge terrorist attack did by an Islamic extremist group, which killed more than 200 innocent lives and left over 500 people injured. Later found out that before and after that tragedy, there were suspicious "MEN" who were wearing niqabs and burqas to hide in. Once you wear a niqab or especially a burqa, no one can identify whether it is even a man or a woman. Even the police or army can't check and identify those who are wearing niqabs or burqas. Therefore recently SriLanka banned face coverings. I know there can be so many other ways to carry weapons, bombs and do suspicious things, but I think covering the whole body make it hard to identify people at first sight which can be a threat. I respect peoples good choices but according to my personal opinion, I don't think one needs to wear niqab or burqa to wear modestly and if I'm not wrong, Quran doesn't mention to wear niqabs or burqas. I think, to symbolize the Islamic culture and to be modest, hijab will be more than enough, especially in tropical and warm countries like my country SriLanka.

Hello, thank you for your comment. I mourn with you for the horrible act that was done in your country. I would just like to correct couple of things: it is allowed for the security personel to check the identities of people, even with niqabs and even men checking women. With my understanding the attackers (most of them)were wearing western clothes and banning niqab is usually just a panic move done by governments who are ashamed that they couldn't prevent the attack otherwise. Like in France for example. No attacks were ever done wearing a face veil there but any attacks are used as an excuse to limit the personal choice of muslim women. The terrorist attacks that were done in Spain, France, Bali and England for example were done using backpacks but no one rushed to ban them even they cause bigger risk than me covering my face. I recognize the concern but there could be check-points to check all peoples identities, even niqabis, if there is concern. Also I would like to know what should be banned or to be done in order to prevent the attacks like in New Zeland where the attackers didnt cover their face. No one stopped those attacks from happening. So my point is that even if all the people in the world would show their faces all the time there would still be crazy people doing these attacks and some of them couldn't be prevented. The governments should think of other real life solutions to prevent these attacks from happening that dont include stripping the women without a real effect. As a conlusion for the comment that we dont know who is man and who is woman if we wear niqabs: in my country it is sometimes hard to know that even most people dont cover their faces. It is called gender neutrality and some women want to dress and do their hair like men and vice versa. Also they talk about a third gender (which cant be recognized neither man nor woman) and want to remove seperated bathrooms for example. So does it matter if someone is man or woman? And if it is concern (like men cant enter female spaces) then the check-points are an answer. Just like everyone are checked when boarding planes. I feel for your loss and I appreciate that we can have this discussion respectfully (agree to disagree).

What happened in Srilanka is happened because government didn't take any action even they knew. By the way I didn't know they can check people wearing niqab or burqa too, good to know that. Just after I added my comment, I realized the gender neutrality problem may come up 😅 In Srilanka's incident this time it had nothing to do with gender neutrality but a suspicious person was trying to hide himself. If people want to wear this voluntary and it makes them comfortable, then that's fine I guess. But when you start talking about how you need to cover up to keep men away, it just makes my stomach hurt. If a man can't keep it in his pants because of you showing face/body/etc, then isn't that the man's fault? He's the one with the problem isn't he? Isn't there anything in the quran that says something about men are expected to act like a decent human being? Meaning, don't assault women ever? No matter what I choose to wear, I'm alwats treated with respect from men. Always. Because that's how one is expected to act in my country. Our laws are very clear that wearing revealing clothes is not sexual consent. No one is allowed to act inappropriate no matter what you look like and a rape victim is never at fault for wearing "slutty" clothes. Infact, men who rapes women will rape anyway no matter what the woman looks like or wear. It is the act of raping that drives them and gets them going, not the look of that particular woman. People get raped in niqabs as well. I mean, with all respect, you don't think the "no need for niqab in the west" makes any sense because there are men there. That's your mindset. But try and understand that to me and many others it makes sense to expect that our fellow citizens, men included, will behave decent or at very least follow the law. Our laws are there to prevent the exact things you are insinuating what the niqab is for. So yeah, we don't need it where I live.

Purple Dawn I agree with everything you said about rape. It is an act of power and not about clothes. This is clearly in islam aswell. Quran says that men need to lower their gaze and they are responsible for their actions just like everyone else is. That is not what I ment when I was talking about "not neccessary in the west". My point of view was that I dont want to be seen my men. Period. And i guess I did mention in the video about the looks and not about actions of men. When I uncovered my face I was getting unwanted comments from men (not muslims) and this is one way for me to delete those all together. It is NOT the only or main reason why I cover but it is one of them. I like my privacy. Me covering this much doesnt delete the responsibility of the men over their actions. The main reason why there is so much sexual harrashment in most arab countries is that they are developing countries that has no laws for it and no surveilance over it. Also there are laws but they are not followed, due to corruption etc. This has nothing to do with islam as they usually dont follow it. No one can come and say it is ok to rape or to even touch a woman you are not married to etc just because they have certain clothes. To a practising muslim man who knows he will meet his Maker on judgement day it is clear he wont touch a woman even she would throw herself at him (we have example from prophet yusuf/joseph in that matter too).

Because the Niqab has become the uniform of the most backwards and the most aggressive and intolerant branch of Islam. Such as Wahabism, ISIS and the like. I think the "security risk" is that unscrupulous people would wear a niqab as a disguise for nefarious purposes. Regarding communication, how does a niqabi communicate with the deaf? Besides sign language, the deaf really depend on facial expression and sometimes lip reading. How do you address that in your community? Thanks in advance.

I know that you wear niqab for modesty, but you're also way ahead of the rest of us in protection from COVID-19 and exposure from the sun. I bet your skin is beautiful. I'm sorry you get such flak for wearing niqab. I don't understand why people think they can tell a woman what she can or cannot wear (whether it's the length of a skirt, have to wear high heels to work, no tank tops, etc.). You're a grown-ass woman, you can dress as you please, and you don't have to answer to anyone. But I thank you for educating us about niqab. God bless.

Assalam o alaikum sister. I just saw your video of "how to eat from niqab". Some of the tips were already used by me but the others were quite helpful Jazakilllahu khaira for that. But i have a question. You went to the restaurant to eat with your gloves on. You had the advantage of fork so u ate easily. But not all the times we are having the forks to use while eating for instance buying food from some food stall. Or eating some pakistani dishes like loaf etc, even french fries diesnt always offers a fork or spoon with them. So how to eat such foods if u wear gloves? If u have any tips for this do share. Lilah V I believe latex gloves have a kind of powder on them, don't they? That may make it a bit dangerous depending on what powder it is, and even if it isn't toxic it can't be good in large quantities. They have these special gloves for preparing meat and fish, that tend to be a bit baggy from what I've seen. Those might be a better alternative, as they might be able to slip right over the already being worn gloves, allowing no inconvenience of trying to find a place to change gloves... that's my idea anyways

Actually in the hot desert sun everyone (also men) is covering the face. That's where the Niqab comes from. But some fanatic scholars have made an obligation out if it - of course only for women.

I understand that we want to justify the commands of Allah SWT, but I think we do every religious act because Allah SWT wants. Laybe this remark saves à lot of comments down here. There are no teachings fromage our beloved Prophet PBUH which talk about tessons of Allah s rules. Whatever we hear here & there is our thoughts. If we understand that one of the meanings of Islam is obediance, we do not need to talk hours about humanitaires nature, beauty, etc. I hope I am clear enough. I appreciate your channel. If you let me, I suggest u to read, if not done, about Fâtemah, Prophets daughter who said best of women is whom who is not seen by & doesnt seen other men. U can read about how she talked in public in case of necessity. So lucky u can put the niqab on. ☺
