As fun as escapist entertainment can be, I find it harder and harder to watch movies and shows without them making me think of something in my own life or in the larger world. Maybe trying too hard to escape from reality only makes it have more control over your mind (oh, that's pretty Star Wars). And if you're going to watch the Star Wars movies over and over again, why not analyze them in different way? I love what you said about stories being a way to see the world through different pairs of glasses. Okay, long comment over.

@@GeekyStoics I find myself in a funny place. Absolutely I read and watch fiction to entertain myself and avoid reading news articles. Heck, I wanted to watch TV for the first reason long before the second one popped up recently. Yet, I don’t oppose a message existing. Sure, I don’t think I’ll have a message in any fictional stories I make, but that doesn’t mean I only pay attention to the entertaining stuff in a story. There’s a reason Transformer fans love Optimus Prime’s nobleness or why we pay attention to the political alliances and scheming in organizations like the Galactic Empire. Basically, there’s nothing saying we can’t both have some stories that are just entertaining, some stories with messages, and some with both. It gets annoying though to hear people cite escapism as a reason why they hate stuff like the new Transgender Clone Trooper, Sister. Yes, I like to ignore the issues of the real world but that doesn’t mean I’m not completely opposed to the fictional world feeling familiar to an extent or being realistic. Is it just me or is there something up with at least the online portion of the Star Wars Fandom lately?

To a degree I like escapism, it's supposed to pull me out of my world. However I agree, if I don't see my world differently, more deeply when I return, I feel like I wasted my time because I gained nothing on the trip.

Completely agree, people have been teaching and learning morals and ethics through stories, parables, iconography, etc. literally for eons. We aren't going to turn that off just because we make films now. It actually gets enhanced by visual medium. People will learn from what they observe even if they observe something without the intent to learn. It sticks in your brain and can be recalled later when you are trying to figure out what actions to take in a similar situation. It's called implicit learning in the research community and is something I studied while earning a PhD in Education.

I would probably put Star Wars as the most viable contender for a kind of universal modern myth if ever there was one. The Ancient Greeks and Romans revered Achilles, Hercules and Odysseus or the gods, they wanted to connect with these stories, they were looking for strength and meaning from an ideal in a largely fictitious works. But by accepting the ideals and living by it, they manifested the teachings and message of the legend into our own world through their actions. I see the same with Star Wars, it was intended to be a kids movie but if you look closer there's a lot more to the story than many realise.

I believe it was Luke Skywalker, who in 'The Legends of Luke Skywalker' said "the galaxy is knowable. That's real magic." Storytelling by its very nature and intent makes the world knowable. After A New Hope, a trip to the desert will never be the same. After The Empire Strikes Back, snow and swamp will become great battlefields and familiar dreams. After The Phantom Menace, you can see where the largest cities in the world can get larger still. Suddenly the mundane can become as magical as it was when we were kids. And all it took was looking at it from a different perspective that's also designed to entertain. That's nothing to huff about.

You guys have really nailed this in a mature way. Escapist stories, comfort stories, what have you...they're important. Especially as we grow older. Life changes. Your perspective changes. You'll probably stumble and make huge mistakes, or something terrible will happen to you. Sometimes something as simple as rewatching a favorite movie can make a huge difference, and help someone come to peace with their life, and maybe help the next generation. "Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all Masters." -Yoda

I've always watched movies not just for entertainment, but to learn from them. Luke's unwavering perseverance, his refusal to lose faith in his father, reminds me that hope can pierce even the darkest of shadows. Aragorn's humility and quiet courage as a leader reveal the strength in gentleness, showing that true power lies not in force, but in guiding with heart. And Captain Miller, in Saving Private Ryan, embodies sacrifice and duty, teaching me that sometimes, the most noble acts are those that go unnoticed, done for the greater good, even when the cost is everything

A story is not only for escape your daily life struggle and duties. It should also have a lesson and teach something important in life or to surpass difficult struggle. Sometime the author of a story,movie, comic,etc.don't do this directly but at the same time it make a story that it identificated with us somehow and show us important things in life.like star wars and other fiction movie and book. I like to create a comic with a amazing story but at the same time a message of surpassing your limit and struggles. Seriously or not you take a story it should have a meaning and teaching and most important have a soul in every word. Keep up the great work you guys doing 👍

Good art and good fiction is ironically just as 'real' or more real than the material world, because the themes in great works like Star Wars are part of the metaphysical patterns that are mapped in life. They can also give meaning to physical matter because it's about what matters.

My answer before I watch the video. I grew up regarding Star Wars as a sort of modern mythology. I looked up to Anakin as a personal hero, someone who tried his best and still failed, to then be redeemed by family. The rise of palpatine taught me the dangers of placing too much trust and power in the hands of one person, a lesson that has proven it's value in the real world time and time again. The teachings of Yoda are (I kid you not) on my mind almost daily, keeping me focused on the day at hand and avoiding the quick and easy path. The series never was perfect. New Hope feels much slower than I remember it being. Empire is still pretty good, and I probably the best movie in the series OBJECTIVELY speaking. Jedi might be my least favorite of all 6 star wars movies, with the Rescue from Jabba taking WAY too long and ruining a character I really liked from Empire (Boba Fett), and I have little to no love of the whole endor plot, the whole movie is redeemed (ironically enough) by Luke's confrontation with Vader and the Emperor, the music, the cinematography, the action and the stakes are all top notch for that final scene, and is the main reason I look forward to watching it. Phantom Menace might be the one I enjoy the most (hold your stones), even when watching it recently in theaters I still came away with the biggest smile on my face, from the music to the action, to the interesting world building, all the way to the performances janky and stilted though they may be, the film is oozing passion and creativity and I can't help but enjoy it, even with my older brother going "oh god please no" in the theater when Jar Jar showed up. Attack of the clones is probably tied with Jedi for my least favorite, even as a kid I didn't care for the whole Anakin and Padame romance plot, but once again, the music, the visuals, the world building, and the action carry an otherwise poor film HARDCORE, easily nudging it ahead of Jedi in some regards. Revenge of the Sith is easily tied with Phantom Menace for my favorite. In addition to just about every reason I love PM, the climactic ending with Palatine's rise to power, order 66, and the Mustafar duel help set it above the rest. If I had to order the films it would probably go: 3, 1, 5, 4, 6, 2. Not a popular order, but the prequels really are special to me, I know the original trilogy is superior, and I love the sequel trilogy, you know the one, the heir to the empire books (maybe one day they'll continue the story on-screen), but the way the prequels expanded the world still has me hungry for more twenty years on. TLDR; I love Star wars, I love the world George Lucas created, by attacking something like that, not just a story, but a mythology, you attack something more core to who I am as a person, and that is something I shall never stand for.
@GeekyStoics2 ай бұрын
My order would be pretty close, although Phantom Menace is my sentimental favorite. Big prequel kids here! -Riley

It's ok to take your passion seriously, what's not ok is when fanatics go to extreme and are ready to hurt people. when passion becomes violent. I say its too much. Let's all just enjoy this great IP and stop telling people to slay themselves when a bad one comes along... Although $300 million still breaks my heart knowing it could have been used on better SW projects or fund 6 more space launches.

Say what you want about the sequels but Ben Solos arc in those movies is what connects it to the saga for me. The original heroes died to bring back the last skywalker Ben. Also he rises out of a pit in episode 9 hence the title. Alot of Christian parallels in episode 9 which i appreciated

Its lowkey evangelicalized, the sequel trilogy somehwhat threw shade at said evangelicalism &... thanks to this take in real time, I feel less as bad with how Episodes VII - IX played out despite having no concrete context with what happens in any of them. 7:59 And why the most "Non-Skywalker" Saga segments of SW prior to '24 pushed the envelope in their right & would include the Clone Wars that still managed to feature Anakin Skywalker; Oh, & Andor sequencing into Rogue One without exception.
