Descriptions:
In a 3 phase generator alternator excitation system, DC is used to excite the rotor field winding. This is because DC has a number of advantages over AC for this application.
First, DC produces a constant magnetic field, which is necessary for the alternator to produce a stable output voltage. AC, on the other hand, produces a varying magnetic field, which would cause the output voltage to fluctuate.
Second, DC is easier to control than AC. This is because the amount of current flowing through the field winding is directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. AC, on the other hand, is more difficult to control because the current flowing through the field winding is also affected by the frequency of the AC supply.
Third, DC is less likely to cause interference with other electrical equipment. This is because DC does not produce any harmonics, which are unwanted frequencies that can be generated by AC.
As a result of these advantages, DC is the preferred choice for excitation in 3 phase generator alternators.
Here are some additional points that could be mentioned in the video:
The DC excitation system can be either self-excited or separately excited. In a self-excited system, the field winding is excited by the residual magnetism in the rotor. In a separately excited system, the field winding is excited by an external DC source.
The DC excitation system is typically controlled by an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The AVR senses the output voltage of the alternator and adjusts the current flowing through the field winding to maintain the output voltage at a constant level.
The DC excitation system is an important part of the alternator's safety features. If the field winding loses its excitation, the alternator will stop producing output voltage. This helps to prevent electrical shock and other hazards.
