Would you buy such a dedicated ultra-endurance bike if it went into production?👀

Ill let you know when I get there! But that concept thumbnail looks wild! Edit: The rear storage on the back of the seat post.. after ridding bikes with childrens seats strapped to the back or when I had a BMX as a youngster with my mates on the rear pegs, the weight throwing around over that rear wheel can be quite concerning once you are required to transition from fast to slow whilst turning for example. I think that position is probably one of the worst.. Id be far more confident with a rear rack and side packs.

simple answer is: no. But mainly because i do not need an endurance bike, because i only commute .. so i am not the target demographic. However... if i was looking for that .. i honestly cannot see the "concept" in this bike. Stripping it off its asortment of bags .. whats left seems to be a rather conservative bike frame - a high end looking one .. but still not exactly progressive or strikingly innovative and novel. There sure are "concept" bikes around, but most of them are design concepts .. not so much for practicality. In terms of innovation .. this particular one seems to play it VERY safe .. with quite conservative lines.

I'm 65. My bike trip this past summer was a 28 day, 1850 km trip from Toronto to Northwestern Ontario, a town called Sioux Lookout. My ride was a 1979 Panasonic steel 'Sport Deluxe' basic 12-speed, adapted to be a single chainring, 5-speed (16-32 teeth) with front and rear racks, lots of tie-ons, waterproof panniers, 165 mm cranks, centre pull Dia-compe brakes, simple flat pedals used with cycling shoes with tough tread soles, raise bars, bar ends, steel front stock rim, rear hand built wheel with heavy gauge spokes, and a vintage leather saddle with three springs, from India. One single downtube mounted friction shifter. I had zero flat tires, zero bike malfunctions, camping in stealth, heavily loaded with gear and food, art kit, music kit. Lots of weight. Heavy me at 210 lbs. I don't know why people think they need such fancy expensive bike stuff. My gears were Shimano Altus and they worked perfectly... Both wheels had four-cross patterns on large flange hubs. Steel stem, steel bars, steel seatpost. I've broken three alloy seatposts on my trips. When you are guiding your mount through a ditch and camping in rough places, it's great to know your bike isn't going to flinch from branches, rocks, mud, and acting as a structural support in your camp out. Cheers mate. Small carbon footprint here. re-use, recycle, upcycle, refuse.

I thank you for your experience. And you're wise and considerate to use what you already have the best way possible. This bike isn't made for a trip like yours though. It's for people who compete in ultracycling contests, and are looking for a bike that doesn't compromise neither practicality nor performance. Just like high-end racing bikes aren't made for Sunday amateur cyclists.

The Salsa Cutthroat is purpose built for the Tour Divide, a self supported ultra endurance race across the US from Mexico to Canada on mainly dirt roads and trails, I’m hoping to get one and race the Tour Divide. Salsa also make the BearGrease which I own, it’s built for winter ultras, or sand/desert. It’s a far tire bike with tons of mounts. They also have full suspension bikes designed the same way . All of them Maximize the frame triangle size so you can put as big of a bag on as possible

utilitarian bikes are the best. As an amateur I learn a LOT from the bike nerds like you; using TPUs on my hybrid fitness bike, using SRAM or Silca calculator for tyre pressure, etc, you save me lots of effort (so more Kms I can do) but there is nothing like a bike that feels like a vehicle carrying things, powering your own lights yourself and having an elegant rack with a light, and even elegant mirrors (i.e. Topeak mirror or Trieye) on your bike for safety, wide slick tyres, sometimes even a basket.... Those things don't add much weight, and the weight factor is mainly the rider than the bike... The Elops 900 Long Distance by Decathlon is a great example of this, so is the Canyon Conmuter 7, although the Alfine 11 isn't that meant for going uphill, which is a problem in the remote and hilly area where I live

I've built something very similar to the concept bike myself for riding road ultra events, including bits borrowed from triathlon bikes like an integrated aero front hydration system and rear seat tube aero storage box. Everything is kept narrow and inline so that from the front you cannot actually see the bags, the bike is super efficient and my testing suggests it is possibly aerodynamically faster with everything fitted than without. The needs of ultra endurance racing are very specific and the aim is efficiency, so low aero drag and low overall weight are important, as is practicality and usability which helps you save time with faffing.

I think it’s more of an evolution of the touring bike. I can see some folks thinking that, “Oh, this is the bike industry trying to dictate what bikes we need for different scenarios.” And they would be right, but you don’t have to buy one if you don’t need one. Does it look cool? Hell yes, it does. Do I need one? No. At least now now. But it ticks a lot of boxes for those who do ultra endurance rides. And like Ollie said, lots of good things can come out of concepts even if the bike itself is never made. Great discussion, gents!

While I like the idea of the dedicated endurance bike, I also like the freedom of re-purposing my MTB. Not as efficient but I can dump the bags and go hit trails, along the way. My other concern was the amount of storage space. We did a bikepacking trip a few weeks back. I used a tail bag and a handlebar roll. With cooking gear, tent, sleeping bag/ air mattress, I’m not sure I’d get all that onto that bike.

It’s a great concept bike, though I think the continued insistence on making new bike categories is a waste of time and mental energy. Touring, endurance, ultra endurance, whatever you want to call it, they’re all the same thing. Hell, even a well set-up road bike (or “race bike”) should be comfortable indefinitely-and ultimately should be capable of being set up for brevets and the like. What we’ve learned about aerodynamics, training, positioning, etcetera has taught us that in any situation where you’re going to be on your bike longer than, say, an hour, being as comfortable as possible, then as aerodynamic as possible, then as light as possible, is what’ll get you to go as far as possible as fast as possible without hurting yourself.

@gcn I find it interesting that the geometry of the bike is similar to that of the Canyon Inflite. And I confess that I have the Inflite for all occasions, Bike packing, Gravel Races and, at the moment, cyclocross competitions in Belgium. It's been a multi-purpose bike for me. I don't think there's one bike that's right for the specific sport, and you can see that with the professional teams constantly adapting their bikes depending on the terrain.

Nice looking bike and interesting frame construction. Would be interesting to see geometry measurements. I think there will be plenty of Audaxers (is that word?) who build custom rigs that they don’t need a new category for. I built a bike for longer and more remote rides back in 2017 based around a Genesis CdF Ti frameset. Subcompact FSA double chain rings (pre GRX), Son dynamo for lights and charging, comfortable Brooks saddle and pannier rack from time to time. Recently fitted latest Ultegra front mech and squeezed in a set of 44mm Rene Herse tires for a plush ride. Super comfortable and durable, if a little too flexible at BB.

The ultra-endurance bike category should definitely be a thing! Basically more streamlined, a little less capable adventure gravel bike with as much integrations as possible (yet, possible to detach unnecessary components at will). In this particular case I'd get rid of aero-esque cocpit (a'la Cerveo S5) and replace it with an aero handlebar connected to suspension-stem for comfort. Also, where are the comfort-enhancing features at the back? At least a suspension seatpost or kind of ISO decoupler would be nice. You can check out my approach to ultra-endurance bike setup I've put together for my recent Europe trip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap7ai2iwqsl4oac

Feel like it's not been well acknowledged that that the advent of LED lighting and lithium-ion batteries have made dynamos a completely different beast. Many people still think they're like the old systems that would be lit for a second while you were pedaling and go out as soon as you stop. We're in a new era now where a dynamo hub could charge a battery that powers a whole range of peripherals on your bike (although this technology still hasn't been utilised to its full extent, as far as I can see).

I know that GCN is extremely anti pannier, but when it comes to that crazy concept bike for ultra endurance I would have thought that pannier bags would be good option. Perhaps GCN could do a video to explain why pannier bags are so much worse then the bike bags that are GCN friendly, you know the bike bags that hang on your frame and rub against the paint work of the frame. And when it comes to the aero effect of bags, most people are cycling well under 20 mph more like 14 - 17mph for these super long distances, so aero isn't going to be that much of a big factor. And the reason why these crazy prototype bikes are happening now and didn't happen before is because you would get touring bike with pannier racks and pannier bags.

Hi Ollie, you Brits need to brush up on your own cycling history. The Lapierre Xelius, use Hellenic Stays. These seat stays start at the top tube and are attached to the seat tube. This forms a " Triple Triangle ". This construction is attributed to an English frame builder named Fred Hellens, and date to 1923. There is also a French patent from Louis Halotel, from 1934. Hetchins used Hellenic Stays on some of their bikes. GT used this design in the 1990s on the Ti Edge and Ti Forte road bikes as well as the Xizang and Lightning mountain bikes. I own a Ti Xizang, and other than a distinctive look, the Hellenic Stays really don't add any thing other than some unwanted weight

New gravel shoes (excitement) but made in Italy (sadness). Love super tradition and high quality, but Italians think there are no people with wide feet, so even if I could afford them, I wouldn't buy them.

Still don't understand how that's better than a good bike pump.

You don’t understand how a motor doing the work rather than you having to hand inflate a tyre could be better? 🙂

Electric bike pumps - Fumpa, Fumpa, Fumpa. Quick to inflate (up to 6 innertubes), quick to recharge via USB C and satisfyingly noisy [okay jarringly noisy]. Several verions are available including a 'nano' with just enough puff for one inflation (a very small, light, emergency 'just get me back on my bike' type). Nimbl? Is that Italian for 'Sorry Bont'??

You just need to add bio-recycling: collect sweat & urine filter it back to your water bottle; collect your poo and turn it into a fuel for your methane stove. That would add to your efficiency.

Not possible. A small local brand could get away with it, or free shirts and privat stuff, but big brands like GCN, I don’t think UCI would be happy about those.

I know, right? The mini-pump is for emergencies that happen once a year. Finding out the electric pump is out of juice would be such a bummer. They have a use when travelling to bike vacations, though. Though when flying they have to be in the carry-on luggage.

Can see appeal of powered batter inflater. But Olly, you know a digital display does not equate to precision!

Having spent some time this week looking at cameras for safety. It has occurred to me that this is a really poor area that needs more development and discussion. Cameras on bikes are a great way to make our streets safer. No company offers cameras that work well for a long time, down to minus degrees centigrade, low light conditions or with crash detection.
