About the REAP, im not sure i believe the claims of comfort…even if a very compliant layup or low modulus fibre was used in the seat tube, its the shape stiffness (second moment of area) of that super deep ISP that has my back wincing in fear. Tubes shapes make so much more of a difference than tweaks in materials (we are talking multiple Xs) And on UK roads from a UK brand. I would love to be proven wrong!

Been using 28-30mm tires over 10 years a cyclocrosser. Close to same width as in race but road friendly for training. Any more width to road tires or rims and will require major changes to frames to make room for no matter what wheel/tire setup. Then frames are just gravel bikes, but with road race geo. Can imagine it will be akward handling and riding bike.
@rcg9573Ай бұрын
agreed. As road tires have gotten bigger and bigger the road frameset HT angles that can accommodate such tires have slackened, the overall wheelbases have gotten significantly longer and the chainstay lengths have gotten longer. No one is going to convince me such a frameset bike being run with some boat anchor 35's or 38's or 40's with a trail fig in the mid 60's or even higher is handling or feeling anything remotely like a classic road bike frameset running 28's or even 30's. No chance! It's like trying to claim a Toyota Avalon handles like a 911 turbo. No it doesn't, and even if you enlarged the engine significantly it still doesn't. 🙂

@peterharrington8709Ай бұрын
@EmmanuelNataf guess it depends on the combination of sealant, tyre and potentially plugs. My experience was the > 45 psi then valve seals would start to leak and plugs would get blown back out of tyre cuts. Pin point holes were better but difficult to decide whether to plug or not. Cold and wet days also seem to cause problems with sealant. Many interesting conundrums, but I just felt that for my road bike it wasn't quite worth the hassle of further experiment.

I felt the worst interviewee was Princeton. Context is important, I understand some riders are paid a bonus if they win with a blacked out set of their wheels. So there is an incentive for them to ride Princeton wheels. Two other things. First, pro cyclists are famously set in their ways. So him saying that they prefer 28s to me means that they prefer wider tires to the extent that they arent too far off say, the 23s and 25s they used to ride a few years ago, not that its necessarily optimal. Second, pro riders are doing road races at average speeds of 45+. So yes maybe that means not going too wide has a potential aero advantage. How many of us are constantly doing that for over 150kms on our weekly club rides? I also assume roads for races are generally good condition and/or are given a bit of maintenance prior to the race. You couldn't say the same for a lot of riders and the courses they ride on. The whole interview is the equivalent of telling someone living in the tropics that they need to wear more because thats what the Alaskans who have been paid wear his product prefer.
@petersouthernboy6327Ай бұрын
I felt that your post was the worst in the comments section.
@rcg9573Ай бұрын
Or it could be that the Princeton guy is spot on and the mania to ride larger and larger tires on the road to the point you are almost riding the equivalent of an XC MTB wheelset and tire set up is not only ridiculous, but also slower. Yes, many pros are set in their ways, but if bigger and bigger tires were actually faster you can be assured that guys fighting to keep a contract or get a new contract next year (the vast majority of them) would absolutely be riding 32's or 35's or 38's etc... regularly if they were actually faster. There's a reason why they are not, and it isn't because they are stuck in their ways. It's because those set ups are in fact A LOT slower in most road racing situations and yes, even for the average Joe Blow cyclist that cruises along at 18 mph on the flats those larger wheel set ups are not as fast as running a 28/30 set up. Sorry, but they are not, not even remotely close.
@MapdecАй бұрын
Umm. I see pro riders as being very receptive to anything that makes them faster, no matter how ridiculous it might look. I think here Harrison is saying the same as you. Racers are different to riders. Their road wheel is wide, but their race wheel is still ‘relatively’ narrow.

The princeton segment... It's 100pc a brand for dentists, 1st of all. "Win races". Lol. Second, I think there's ONE team in the TDF this year that was still on 25mm, I think a french team, the one with the smallest budget probably. Pogi has been on 30C on ultra wide enve rims and given the money they have, you can rest assured they've optimised everything on that bike (the frame is slow but UAE owns colnago, so colnago it is). The question in pro teams is how wide your 28C measures on wide rims. And even if comparing the track and the road makes no sense, pressure on track bikes has indeed been going down, just ask Bingham.
