I feel like the vast majority of styles/themes work with lolita as long as you do it right - good quality pieces, proper silhouette, balanced coord, fashion instead of costume, etc... After that it's just a matter of personal taste ! Rectangle headdresses are great, they're so easy to wear ! Thanks for watching 💖
@Slithera3 жыл бұрын
This is really well researched! I distinctly remember F Yeah Lolita having an entire article about rectangle headdresses, how most people considered them "ita", and the "better" version of them being the simplified, "modern" designs released by classic brands (this was at least a decade ago so, "modern" by 2010's standards). Paraphrased, of course, but it's funny to think about this now when just a few years after that article was posted, rectangle headdresses became even more frilly and ridiculous than the original designs that were associated with old school. I definitely agree that we shouldn't completely brush off certain elements of a coord just because they're considered outdated*. Just like black and white dresses were marked off as ita pretty much wholesale around the 2010s, candy colored wigs and 2010's OTT sweet was also considered outdated and even derogatorily called fetish wear at some point (which was always a ridiculous and out of line comparison to make imo), and here we are just a few years later, and everyone is going crazy for the iconic 2010 AP sweet style again. *Admittedly, I have to be a tiny bit of a hypocrite here because some elements that were once considered trendy really didn't and still don't appeal to me at all - Namely: fawn makeup, horns, giant flower headdresses, and halo headbands - Not because I think they're always ita, necessarily, but they don't seem "recognizably lolita" in my eyes, and in many cases (not all, but rather often) they can bring the quality of the overall coord down. Then again, this is coming from someone who's fully embraced black and white, peeking bloomers, striped socks, aprons, and especially Alice themed coords (which were also deemed bad/costumey/"ita" at one point, ironically), so, you know, glass houses haha.

Omg i remember that post from F Yeah Lolita! I read it as a newbie a few years ago and was so confused cuz I strongly associated lolita with rectangle headdress, lol At the end of the day I think it's totally normal to have preferences and were always gonna be influenced by personal taste. When something has no origin in actual lolita brands or trends, it's normal to have discussions about it in the community! I think it's more about dismissing items specifically made for lolita by established brands that seems a bit silly and I'm glad that the comm seems to be moving past it! Thanks for watching 💕

I like this type of video. I remember when I first got into lolita in about 2012, it was usually advised in guides and on livejournal that wearing black and white dresses (unless it was a print) or a rectangle headdress or a mini hat was something for experienced lolitas, and not worth it for beginners who hadn't learnt how to tell the difference between good and bad quality. It took me ages to start feeling like it was ok to wear those things, I guess up until old-school became a trend again and it suddenly became fine to wear all the things that I'd seen being called ita just a few years before.

I remember seeing the same guides. Tbh I still struggle with rectangle headdresses because of it. Theyre definitely my least used headdress. Im glad old school came back and made a lot of people reevaluate how we treat older trends. And thank you, Im glad you liked the video :) ❤️

I love the contrast in the old school black and white dresses. I think they are charming. However, i think the quality of the lace and trim used can make or break the design. If cheap lace is on it, it will look ita.

Oh, man this is a trip in the way back machine. You are absolutely right that most of what made the ita list is what was available at anime cons. But I also remember that good quality small brands were looked at with almost as much scorn as the cheap replicas, because they weren't Brand. There was a tremendous amount of gatekeeping going on back then, and I am so glad that the community got over it as shopping became easier.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thankfully there is much less gatekeeping now, I have seen a lot of people say this!

You put it all very well into words, covering all the important points. Especially the cycle of things being hard to coordinate becoming ita staples (I remember witnessing that exact thing in real time with peignoirs) and the point about directing people to proper things being a better use of people's time than point blank discouraging people. Saying "no" can trigger the "don't tell me what to do" response and rarely does that turn into a legitimate case of being proven wrong by the person, usually leading to a great deal of cringe.

No Gosick in the anime section of the video? Blonde gothic lolita queen! 🙌 Great video! It’s amazing how much the community has changed even in the last decade. I’m in a weird place with this since I discovered lolita back in 2008, but I didn’t start wearing it until 2016, so the old-school look is very nostalgic for me, but I managed to avoid the peak years of the scam sites (thank God lol)

I love this "video essay" style of content! Also found everything you said was super interesting, and I like that you covered this topic. It's funny to me that even in 2021 with the wealth of info available online, myths of "ita items" are still so common. In the end, nothing in inherently ita. It's all about styling and quality, like you say.

I love your lolita history stuff. I am a newbie lolita as of the llast 2 years, but have known about is since like, 2002 from anime and j-fashion and drama so I always thought of it as costume-y until recent years when I realized the costumey stuff was the fetishised and poor rep of what was a fashion I otherwise would have been super into if I hadn't had blinders on. I also love your rounded presentation of the stuff, like 'offer alternative, in-style works, not just tearing down crit'

I also feel like in 2012 or so when I first got interested in lolita (but long before I had the money to buy anything) there was this idea that burando could do no wrong. I got more of a sense that oh this mini hat is okay because it's official not because AatP did a good job balancing the details and the wearer did a good job balancing it as part of their coord with big poofy pigtails. This perspective also ignored some questionable design or construction choices that the big brands made at times (meta camouflage dress I'm looking at you) and I think discouraged people from sewing their own lolita or starting indie brands.

I definitely agree people let a lot slide cuz it's burando but I also stan metas camo print dresses 🫣😁

Idk why I just found this video - but thank you for making it ! It's so well produced (just like all of your other videos!!) It's so nice having someone present research on topics that aren't talked about a whole lot. Also I totally remember hearing some of these things being considered ita years bacl(like the black & white schemes) and people now claiming it was never considered that- but I was like I def am not crazy! haha

Wow... I left like I accidently attended an Advanced Lolita Theory lecture when I was just supposed to be in "Bows and Ribbons 101"... gonna like this despite having stared confusingly though most of it. I did take down this note: "Lolita might be the most complex fashion community ever." I do know what Ita means now, won't lie I thought it meant Italian which didn't make any sense.... Liked!

I’m getting back into lolita after years of avoiding it due to blatant fat phobia and elitism that was prevalent in that community back then. But now that I’m researching, I’m realizing a lot of the the leaders in these magazines are wearing things that would be considered ita. So I’m confused as to why that sudden shift had happened

damn now i'm realizing there's barely been any popular lolita anime characters lately. the only semi recent one i can think of is the one from dangan ronpa but even that is from several years ago atp

Oof I just had the realization that I might be about to become the ita wearing the demonias haha! It’s so hard to find lolita shoes in my size outside of cotton candy feet (the plus size shoes in most taobao brands seem to cut off one size before me T-T) so I’ve been saving up for some demonias to coordinate with a yami-kawaii lolita dress I ordered off of taobao, but I was hoping I’d be able to find more traditional shoes in my sizing 😅

@PinkFakeFlowers3 жыл бұрын
For actual winter boots, you might have to look outside of lolita brands.. it depends where you live (I'm in Canada lol so I can't settle for anything but true winter boots). I think timbs have some pink ones at least! But for actual lolita boots, have you checked sosic or antaina? They do custom colors and I know they do boots

Btssb keeps putting out black and white dresses even to this day and there always sold out on the US site. I know the newer modern day gen z lolitas might think old school is ita but I love it and Old school sometimes goes for a lot of money on lace market and other re seller sights so idk.
@PinkFakeFlowers Жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of the "old school is ita" discourse comes from the OTT sweet era in the 2010s, when old school was seen as outdated instead of "vintage". I think more newest lolitas don't have this idea as much since they're entering lolita after it's been popularized again thru new trends 🤔 that's why old school is expensive now !
@Katesaprincess Жыл бұрын
Yeah I personally only think black and white dresses are ita if they’re like the cheap ones from Amazon which you can tell an Amazon dress apart from A btssb dress from miles away. I also think when I see sweet Lolita with tons and tons of cheap accessories on them that’s when I think ita because it’s hard to look at an already overly printed dress with a bunch of random stuff thrown on it especially when it’s an expensive dress.
