You forgot to mention that the color used on the vehicles is called, “Mountbatten pink” and was first used by Lord Mountbatten in the Second World War. They chose it, because at night the color is almost invisible. The SAS liked it, because a lot of their long recon missions would occur at night, and a fast moving almost invisible vehicle was what they needed. Edit: I did not expect this comment to get so many likes. I’m also surprised I managed to make people happy, and piss them off with this comment.

My Grandad was an RAF Flight Engineer circa. 1950+ He served in Aden during the withdrawal and the hercules he served on transported the SAS into the field. I remember him telling me about their pink jeeps and how all the crew laughed at the SAS at it looked ridiculous, he then said that once the doors opened and the jeeps drove out into the desert, within 30ft they were 'invisible' and the laughter just as suddenly stopped.

I remember a story my dad told me about his unit's M2A2 Bradley fighting vehicles. Shortly before deploying to the Gulf in 1991, apparently some of the vehicles had just gone through the paint shop and they wanted everybody to get acquainted with their vehicles. Turns out instead of painting the Bradley's a sand tan color they were a bright pink color instead! Gave everyone quite the laugh and the next day they went through the painter once again and got their proper colors.

So basically the pink paint scheme was said to be a highly effective desert camouflage, especially at dawn/dusk. They were eventually replaced by the Land Rover 110 series and its more subdued beige camouflage scheme.
@thedude4795
@thedude4795 2 жыл бұрын
no, the pink color was meant to blend in DURING THE DAY. It started when an officer, iirc, and others where collecting rubble from a crash site, and one piece was pink, and the officer was amazed at how close he had to be to it before he spotted it. That man was of high stock and because of his suggestion the rovers became pink, and everyone thinks it was only meant for dusk or dawn.

@theant9821
@theant9821 Жыл бұрын
@@thedude4795 the idea is while the sun is low in the sky the sand blown by the wind appears to be pink, this happens mid day but its far more significant the lower the sun is. Pink blends in with the sunlight itself and blends in with haze created by the sand. So in mornings and evenings it was especially well camouflaged. During the day in desert stealth warfare you generally try to stay still in hide the vehicle with netting etc. So aircraft can't see it, and move at night. So the pink is ideal for it to stay camouflaged as the sun rises and sets. You want to reduce the silhouette as much as possible. Hence why soldiers don't tab along the ridgeline, they tab below it so your silhouette cannot be seen, you blends in with the hill opposed to standing out in the sky.

Fun fact: Luke Skywalker's lightsaber turned green in Return of The Jedi for the exact opposite reason: because a green lightsaber stands out and create a contrast with the desert background visually, and thus looked better than blue lightsaber. The fact that the blue lightsaber's colour matched the sky also made it necessary to change the colour. This was later retconned of course, and a story meaning was added (Luke has matured and is now worthy of the Jedi Master's status)

@@GrumpyMunkyGameDesign yes quite disrespectful indeed. Brits are one of our closest ally and also one of our worst enemy. Lets not fall in those traps trying to divide us. Our people are very similar and i know even if we are great rival, we sincerely wish each other the best. Even if i agree the defeat of france in ww2 was terrible, and collaboration with enemy was even worst, let's not resume french history to this event. It's always easy talking about something you didn't knew or can't even imagine. I'm curious to see if he's willing to die for his liberty or putting all his family and even his village at risk for his actions. Most french people were not part of resistance tho, but in my grandfather village in Brittany there is "la rue des pendus" meaning "street of the hanged people". The story behind it is some resistance actions took place around the village, the german answer was to hang to the streets lights all male between 16 and 25 and leaving them here for days. Curious to see how brave and heroic he would be waking up in front of such "spectacle".

@@GrumpyMunkyGameDesign It wasn't really the British that coined the French surrender trope, I believe it mainly came around from Frances refusal to fight in the Iraq war (good on them) and it was started by the Americans.
@randomobserver8168
@randomobserver8168 2 жыл бұрын
@@callumwilliams1449 The trope goes back much farther than that, though it might still have been invented by Americans. My older British relatives were the sort to say sadly, when France came up, that "they let us down in the war". Though my uncle was more prone to complain about the Belgians because he liked to sneer the word "capitulated", which is more effective than "armistice". But beyond that, I like to think that Britons remembered also the Great War, which defined the history of both nations so greatly. The Americans tend to have a less tragic, and more bombastic, attitude to both wars, so I could see them inventing the practice of ragging France for 1940. The "cheese eating surrender monkeys" line comes from a very early Simpsons episode, so that part is American but it long, long predates 9/11 or the Gulf War. It was re-popularized by conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg in 2003 as a bit of a gag, but a bitter and sarcastic one, for the reasons you give. Surprising it got out into the wild- his column was in the magazine and webzine National Review, not exactly a mass circulation organ. Fun fact- "cheese eating surrender monkeys" was first stated by Groundskeeper Willie in one of his thickest mock-Scottish accents, while serving as substitute French teacher and wearing a striped shirt and beret.

Awesome vehicle. Landrovers are rugged vehicles a British take on of American jeeps for civillian use primarily. Landrovers proved it's capabilities as it was used numerous times in diferent British overland expeditions. One famouse expedition was during the 1950's when 2 landrovers crossed to France and started their expedition and ending it in Singapore this two land rovers as well as their crews came from Oxford and Cambridge University (basically they were colleges) that is why the expedition was called Oxford and Cambridge Overland expedition.

Some of the facts aren't quite 100% accurate. They changed/left out some small details here and there. For instance, the pink color scheme, called "Mountbatten pink" was first used on naval ships. It's named after Lord Mountbatten of the Brittish Royal Navy, who was the first to use the color as camouflage during WWII after watching a cargo ship of a similar color, completely disappear in the sunset. It's effectiveness has been argued about for decades so I assume the difference compared to other forms of naval camouflage of the era, like "razzle dazzle" camo, is negligible.

Because we’re prettier in pink😂 Also the term who dares wins wasn’t really our motto, most of the time The SAS were careful planners and usually never left a man behind, in the time of the North African campaign where we took out most of the Germans planes in their airfields, we only lost one officer when a stray bullet hit him in the dead of night.

I remember buying the Tamiya Kit of this vehicle as a kid, back then I always thought it had something to do with the Pink Panther films as to why is was molded in pink. It wasn't until much later I found out why it was pink, naturally I painted mine the conventional Army camo pattern and sadly that model was lost a long time ago.

Great to finally see a video on my favorite obscure history fact! And especially as it’s by Simple History! Although the part about the same, if not similar pink was used on Jeeps in North Africa in 1941-1942. Though this fact may be debatable, it still should have been included, as the North Africa campaign is mentioned, but not the pink jeeps…? Land Rover was basically the British version of the Willys Jeep, and basically played the same role as Jeeps. I still feel as if Pink Jeeps should have been mentioned. Just a thought though…

Idiot using that stereotype all the time. Most of these Older Series 1, 2, 2a, 3 and early defenders are not famous for breaking down, At one point in history it was estimated that for more than half the world's population, the first car they ever saw was a Land Rover. Look it up, when was the year that turn Land Rover brand as a unreliable vehicle. In the early 2000 Land Rover had gone downhill for its reputation. That's why whenever you search for their reliability rating in Google it always shows up as a used early used 2000 and late 2020s Range Rover (not the older traditional basic Land Rover model rating). Land Rovers pre 90s were built different, the 2.25, 3.5, 19j, 200 and 300tdi. There's a reason why the 300tdi produced until the td5 model retired. It's quite common to see their TDI engine could last over 550k miles with a basic maintenance. Even in the village in Congo, they're still been used as a public transportation. The comment you've stated aren't related to the vehicle above and to those who doesn't understand Land Rovers and Range Rovers will take it as a true fact. Most people these days spitting false statement regarding the Land Rover poor reliability.

An American Liberator bomber “The Lady be Good” crashed in the Libyan Desert after returning from a raid in WW2. In the 1960 the SAS did their desert mobility training there. This bomber like the Chevrolet trucks of the LRDG were factory painted a dull pink. The wreck site was used by the SAS as a navigational beacon in an area devoid of natural landmarks. This is the origin of the SAS’s use of the colour, although they used a much deeper shade.

These androgynous - unisex ideas, stem from marxist ideological influences. - I don't see that having women involved in these areas is an advantage at all. Certainly not as regards the practicalities of field deployments anyway. Indeed, it is an unnecessary complication. Men as a rule are physically stronger. So what often happens with these things is....To facilitate women being involved. Either the physical standards are lowered. Or women are allowed to qualify to a lesser standard than the men. In which case you have a 2 tiered system. - Another complication. It comes back to human biological / physical reality! Sure you can have physically strong women. And some women who are stronger than some men. However no matter how strong those particular women are. You can always find stronger men. Just compare - at the top end. The relative performances of the very best female athletes. To the very best male athletes.....There are some things women can do better than men! However having women in these military roles is not one of them!!
@catman300games4
@catman300games4 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidtaylor351 That would depend on the task at hand. Although yes, comparing the best performances of male and female athletes you would probably find that female athletes achieve slightly less. They're still incredible, but the numbers favour the men. That doesn't neccessarily mean that women can't perform to the same standard as men. Taking the athletes example: they train everyday to be the best at their sport, but special forces groups don't. They have to be strong, fast, skilled and have good situational awareness and understand advanced tactics. Just because a woman can't be as strong as the worlds strongest man doesn't mean she can't be strong enough to make herself useful. The other thing to consider is the other elements of what the SAS do like infiltration. Women are often seen as less of a threat, therefore they are often better at it then men. Also, what if there was a task or mission that required a woman, the SAS simply wouldn't be able to do it.
