And that lady's and gentleman is the reason why corporations around the world have catastrophic failures. They want to squeeze every penny of profit they can out of their systems at the expense of everybody's safety. Even if an airplane pilot realizes there's a problem, they're not allowed to just land wherever they think they should, right? They have to check with ground control. Same with trains. We get a notification, we call dispatch (who has access to that same sensor info), and they tell us where we can stop. Usually it's somewhere that other trains can get past/around us, because it could take an hour or more to find walk from the locomotive back to the bad bearing or dragging equipment or whatever.
@guyintenn
@guyintenn Жыл бұрын
@@fayceoff Once a pilot declares an emergency the ATC is only there to assist. It is the pilots decision to land, if possible, wherever they feel they can. The ATC responsibilities at that point are to give the aircraft having the emergency as clear of an airspace as is possible (divert other traffic), inform the pilot of the closet airport (sometimes even the closet highway), inform other ATC's whose airspace may be affected, and alert emergency services once the pilot or radar has determined the touchdown/crash location. So once an emergency is declared, "ground control" or ATC, will not tell the pilot what to do, only inform them of the closest airports or other places a pilot may land.
@fayceoff
@fayceoff Жыл бұрын
@CH Mullins Then I guess rail dispatch and ATC are totally different. Maybe because the rails are private property... I don't know. I guess that wasn't a very good comparison. But like I said - we generally can't just stop our trains without notifying dispatch even if we get a detector alarm.

@paulmasterson386

Ted Cruz absolutely nailed it with his question. I am a retired railway conductor and you should always stop and check if you get a hot axle box alert. It didn’t happen because railway controllers demand that the train keeps going to avoid delaying following trains. In the UK our train crews have the right to decide for themselves safety issues like this. It would seem train crews in the USA do not have,and that needs to change. Axle box detectors are able to detect which vehicle on the train has caused the problem,unfortunately due to the huge length of trains in the USA it takes a long time for the crew to walk down the train and find out if there’s a problem. In the UK crew have a temperature stick which they can put on a suspected hot axle box, if it melts you’ve got a problem it’s as simple as that.
@Tina-mt9cl
@Tina-mt9cl Жыл бұрын
Do you have more than one train company in the UK or are all the tracks and trains owned by the same corporation like here in the USA? Our government here is supposed to break up monopolies for reasons exactly such as these current events but instead they just push the monopoly to unionize and if they do then they accept $millions in donations from said union and leave them alone. On the other hand if they don't unionize the government is not so nice... Norfolk Southern is a unionized company.... Unions need to be outlawed in this country plain & simple.

Thats very interesting he said running at 100°C is within their specs. This is generally true for bearings(when I say generally its because of the massive amount of various types with varied specifications). But 100°C is definitely at the upper limit. You don't want to be running any mechanical system at its max capability. Usually things are over engineered/built to be running at 80 or 70, 90%, etc. so you have a buffer against catastrophic failure. Thus seems a bit odd they're ok with a system operating at its max physical limits. It just doesnt seem in line with what's called FoS, or safety factor, in industry.
@RealPackCat
@RealPackCat Жыл бұрын
in America °F is used... a rough estimate is to subtract 32 and divide by 2. so 100 °F is approximately 37.778 °C. Boiling water is 212 °F, which is 100 °C, which is also probably how they came up with °C in the first place. (0 °C being freezing and 100 °C being boiling temperature)

The human touch is important! Wouldn't have happened either if the seasoned workers who checked the undercarriages, etc.. at every stop hadn't been let go when the strikes were forced to end. Better to err on the side of safety but it seems they chose money. My dad taught me to always check my vehicle regularly when using it to see if anything is amiss. At least twice I avoided a huge blow-out on the road when I saw the bad place in the tires while parked.

I mean... in many cases it really is. The US as a whole has a "Just in time" logistics model where things get where they're needed, when they're needed. This train derailment was totally preventable, if they would have stopped and checked why that car was getting hotter after the second detector, things were going bad fast at that point . This is what is known as a Hot Box in years of old . They keep going until the bear and axle literally melted the steel and came apart . When the grease was gone the bearing life ended shortly after that and the melting of the steel started .

Upkeep maintance! Take care of the problem before it becomes a problem. Check your oil, tires, wiper fluid, coolant, etc., before you start out on a car trip. Makes sense to me! Why not do an inspection on the trains, a real inspection, before beginning a trip. My husband was a piolet and he inspected his plane before he took off, even though the crew had inspected the plane. That was part of his piolet training. What has happened to our lack-a-daisical world? People don't do their job; it's called, "pass the buck!"

Here is an idea: Instead of the hotbox detectors sending the info of temperature thresholds, be they 170 or 200 Fahrenheit sized degrees over ambient, how about a constant temperature reading for every axle, and an outdoor temperature reading? Available to both the dispatcher and to the crew of each and every train? Short of the threshold, the temperature is rising at a certain rate that is not normal. Bearings also make funny noises when they start to go bad. Detect that. Send to a speaker in the cab of the driving locomotive. Limit the length of the trains to one mile. When was the last time an airline pilot was told to "keep flying" when he is saying, "Hey, something's not kosher up here, I need to bring this bird to the nearest runway for an emergency landing."?
@starcrafsf7101
@starcrafsf7101 Жыл бұрын
I think the threshold is important, as well as what you mentioned. And there should also be an alert when unusual spikes in temperature happen. So all three create a redundancy that aerospace has long since learned is necessary. A single alert is bound to fail, but having 3 different things to alert to the same thing, well you might miss one, and could miss 2 but if you miss all 3, then your just incompetent, or there’s some serious problems.

The conductors should;d get real time hot box warnings. They learned in passenger flights many years ago that the 2 pilots should be able to track problems real-time so they can stop a flight or fix an issue before it becomes critical. The conductors of the train should have the same rule. That could have avoided a big disaster.

Yep, sometimes a delay actually saves a SHIT TON of money in the long run rather than the short term costs. Something that I’ve noticed since years ago, corpos only look at the short term now effects rather than the “sure it might cost us a little more right now, but it’ll save us time, headache, and massive expense later”

Our rail CEOs are cringe at best to listen to. As a railroad family, we have watched this industry reach an all time low after our family’s life being dictated daily by what rail CEOs decide FOR us. We place our life around this job and in return, they still care more about their shareholders than their employees. This video sums up how incompetent the leadership in rail is at managing their infrastructure and employees, and how geared they are and good they are at making money and legal games of twister. If they didn’t have lawyers and money, they wouldnt know how to survive in the industry actually, gasp, just getting cargo from point A to B. If it werent for national media attention, the crew would’ve been fired immediately. The crews are always fired regardless if its the companies fault. When you get called to investigation on anything they’ve already decided your fate it’s just a matter of making the report look legit and asking the right questions and getting the right answers. The fact this CEO says “our employees did nothing wrong”, its like, a person in an abusive relationship and suddenly the cops are asking questions and out of no where they speak good things. This kind of stuff does not happen. Employees always get thrown under the bus. And railroad sweeps it under the rug. They are doing the same thing they always do except the difference now is their flowery speeches aren’t working. They are not used to actually having to foot the bill on anything or explain. Its not part of their business model.

@@edjarrett3164 this seems to be a Norfolk Southern thing, CSX and Union Pacific have these detectors as well and the crew is notified by every one of them, how many axels are counted, if there is dragging equipment, and hot bearing detector with a mile post and speed. If a rail car usually has only 4 wheels, each wheel needs to have an individual sensor and this needs to be hard wired and connected to the engineers cabin when connected to the train. This will insure that the engineer has full knowledge of the vehicles he's responsible for. This can be achieved with minimal cost.

In addition to the surveillance video showing the train's axle on fire 20 miles and nearly a full hour prior to the derailment, there were not one, but five (5!) 911 calls reporting that the train's axle was on fire--the earliest coming in from Sebring, Ohio, a full 30 miles west of East Palestine, and an hour prior to the derailment. These 911 calls were ignored by Norfolk Southern, which instead advised the conductor to keep the train moving and get it into the Norfolk Southern Conway Rail Yard in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, which is located just a few miles to the east of East Palestine.
