If the One Ring and Silmarils were so important, why weren’t more created? Today we will explore this question, and why these artifacts could and would never be replicated in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on the replication of the One Ring and Silmarils in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

It’s exactly like asking “Why didn’t Tolkien write more books of the same quality of LOTR?” The amount of effort it takes to make something like LOTR is a once in a lifetime thing.

There is another reason why other Silmiril's might never have been created again, even if they could. The Doom of the Noldor. The damage the creation of these jewels wrought was so profound, resulted in the loss of so many lives, so much strife between brothers that they probably passed into the realm of cautionary tales by the second and third ages. Oh, and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Its just like Feanor said, some things can just only be done once. I think alot of that comes down to just shear luck in alot of ways. Its getting all the right things to go the right way at the right time and for the most extraordinary things ever done those kinds of alignments only come around once, even in an immortal life time. And sometimes there is only just enough material to make it happen once.

"Here's a pretty thing" Just imagine it; tons of rings of power or silmarils in the world and a massive free for all. Thunderdome middle earth style 😂 But what makes a piece of art or craftsmanship special or beautiful is its uniqueness. The zenith of one's work cannot b replicated or fashioned in the exact same way. If that were the case then it would lose its significance.

Now, i might be mistaken, but could we count the Phial of Galadriel as an object similar to the Silmarils ? Capturing the light of a Silmaril might be a lesser feat than that of forging one of your own, yet it still shows that the knowledge and mastery over such crafts has not diminished from the minds of the Nõldor. Same could be said about fëanorean lanterns, whose function depended on capturing starlight into intricately grinded crystals.

Given the endless tragedy, destruction, & death that followed Feanor's creations, it's plausible also that the Valar simply forbade the designing of any more such items within he boundaries of Valinor. What got created in Middle Earth was not their concern and not just because the lands outside of Valinor were outside of their rule. Even the greatest Dwarf or Mannish craftsmen were simply not capable of bringing forth the items of such potential harm that the Elves could create. Within Valinor itself though, even if another Eldar craftsman with Feanor's will & skills existed, they surely would have been kept under close control & guidance to ensure that nothing they created could ever cause even a fraction of the chaos & horror that accompanied Feanor's legacy.

I like how it also demonstrate the 'rules' in Tolkien's world: that the phial is still lesser than the Silamrils from the elder days, as they are capturing the light of a half elven, whereas the Silmarils captured the light from the magnum opus of several Valars.

The Vala never wanted to admit it, but their power was significantly diminishing as Arda aged. Going back to the Ages of the Lamps (or even before then), the Vala were creating whole continents, seas, and mountain ranges. By the Ages of the Sun & Moon, their direct intervention was less overt, more subtle and more reliant on Maiar (or in the case of Akallabeth -- Eru himself). Even Morgoth at the end of the War of Wrath basically gave himself up, admitting that he was so spent from marring Arda and corrupting his foul creations (everything from dragons to balrogs to the nameless things) that he had no constitution left to fight the Host of Manwe. As the magic of the Vala diminished, so too did the magic of the elves and dwarves at the local level. The great jewels, necklaces, and rings that they crafted in the early ages could never be recreated in the latter ages. They drained all their wisdom and magic into the crafting of these items and they didn't have the mana to make any more. And soon, in time, the magic of these items faded away also. The only race that remained was men: The only people who didn't rely on magic. As is Tolkien's intent (and message).

It's possible the crafted objects (in the Legendarium) are raised to the statures of artifacts. Like holy relics by the way they are portrayed in the books. In Tolkien's works, this objects (the one ring, the Silmarills, Sting, Andúril etc) are given the value and significance much like a great artwork or magnum opus of the tradition of revering craftsmanship and skilled work. Trying to Replicate the creation or effect of the analyzed object would be the equivalent of asking Da vinci to make another Monalisa. It's impossible. I think that there are two "philosophical" influence for Tolkien in this matter: "Art Nouveau" and "Art and craft movement": >"A man at work, making something which he feels will exist because he is working at it and wills it, is exercising the energies of his mind and soul as well as of his body. Memory and imagination help him as he works.” William Morris (Morris, Useful Work Vs. Useless Toil) And: >"Arts and Crafts was a movement that was, at its heart, about integrity. It was about respect for skill in craft as a concept and for the people who possessed these skills, and had worked their entire lives to attain them. It was about the materials themselves and how skilled craftsmen used these materials to create something worthwhile, lasting, useful and beautiful. It was about retaining a certain order in the natural world by respecting where these materials came from and the manner in which they were obtained. To understand the Arts and Crafts Movement and what its adherents were trying to accomplish, we must direct our focus to the socio-political and environmental atmosphere surrounding the Victorian Era in England. The Arts and Crafts Movement responded to what wealthy, higher born members of society thought and felt about the mass production of highly decorative, ornate clutter and meaningless, cheap pieces of what they considered to be faux finery." scholarship.rollins.edu › ...PDF The Arts and Crafts Movement, Industrial Revolution and The Lord ... In my opinion, following the logic of "sublime objects theory": try to replicate or imitate the characteristic or power of a certain artifact that seems to contain a piece of the feeling/soul (would follow the logic of the Full Metal Alchemist Equivalent Exchange) of its creator is to fall into the industrial aspect that Tolkien so criticized. Seems to me to fall into the "sameness" or the withdrawal of what makes a relic something special and unique.

I believe the Elessar is somewhat similar to a Silmaril but with the light of the Sun instead. Plus, the Rings of Power were themselves something like replacements for the Silmarils. If the Noldor of Middle-earth had kept the Silmarils, they probably would've used them to bring the light and beauty of Valinor under the Two Trees to Middle-earth. Unfortunately, they couldn't do that, so they settled with the Rings which could preserve and enhance the beauty of Middle-earth.

It's possible that there were other works that consumed the spirits of their makers along the same lines as Fëanor's Silmarilli or Sauron's Ring. It's possible that we didn't learn of them because they consumed too much and the craftsman was destroyed in the making.

I think Saruman would have been aware of how his Ring could have fallen under the control of a powerful being wielding the One Ring and so would have developed his own techniques so that wouldn't have happened. My person view is that Saruman's Ring was a lesser Ring, not what he would have ultimately created if he had had more time.

To have another elf with the creative powers of Féanor, firstly, you would need to find a female elf who was willing to sacrifice herself. Míriel gave virtually everything of her mind, body, and soul in the birthing of Féanor. I'm not so sure any elf would be willing to give so much again when you consider how well Féanor's life went. Even if such a technically brilliant elf lord came into the world, he wouldn't be able to create new silmarils. He'd have to create some new masterwork. Personally, being compared to Féanor all my life holds little appeal. 😮😮❤❤❤😮😮

I don't know about the Silmarils, but I think the reason why such sub-creation artifacts such as the One Ring can be done only once is related to the fact that a spiritual incarnation at this level can only be realized once. The main reason for this may be that the teachings on how to realize this incarnation, apart from having or not having power, were lost over time along with those who knew them.

There are unique materials, unique locations, unique fuels, and unique individuals. There are times in which perfection is reached and mastery fulfilled. That is its peak, and those that they crafted were but once. Though they may make other great things in their mastery, that moment of triumph of skill and pinnacle had been reached. Some things have great costs, and great impact, others even forbidden or their supplies lost forever or limited to that one creation or point of creation. Items and Weapons of legacy are always limited and with such great history and lore. Though replication of each stroke of thy hammer, and matching both mind and strength, even perfect replication of the crafters purpose and material, it would ultimately be something else.

Because there's only so much of a soul you can put into something. You can't remake great works, that's the entire point of the whole story, your power fades the more and more you make, and eventually there's nothing left. That's why Feanor couldn't create more Silmarils, that's why the Valar couldn't produce more trees or lamps, that's why Galadriel couldn't create another Lothlorien. It takes a part of you to make something truly great. And that greatness eventually fades, power diminishes.

Why would Saruman craft a ring of power connected to the others at all? If he had the ring lore to craft a ring of equivalent power to the One ring, and as Aule's servant and fellow Maiar I think he could craft free from Sauron's influence, why would he not just create his own lesser rings to give himself servants completely bound to his will rather than attempt to wrest control of Sauron's servants from him?

I know I whine about this way too much, but I wish other examples, apart from the One Ring, illustrated the concept better. It made sense that Sauron could not forge an additional One Ring because not just a large portion, bur a majority of his essence was bound up in it; he simply lacked the soul to do it again, but so many other "great works" don't SEEM to have this issue. I always say that it seems like Feanor, and Celebimbor, got free passes on their crafts; Feanor didn't shorten his long life by tying it into the Silmarils, nor dud Celebimbor lose a part of himself forging over a dozen Rings of Power. For whatever reason, they basically just got to make, and the only flaw was that the quality of their work, and maybe their hubris, attracted foes to take from them, and they were slain. It might've been cool, though sad, if one of them had decimated their hands, and fine dexterity, creating their works, and so lacked the skills to again, but while Sauron had to give up part of his fea, to make the One, "lesser" beings were able to forge marvels at seemingly no cost.
@istari0
@istari0 5 ай бұрын
Fëanor did not create the light he captured in the Silmarils nor was he involved in hallowing them. Celebrimbor did not make all those Rings of Power by himself; he was the leader of the smiths of Eregion that made them and Sauron also played a direct role in the making of the first 16. What Sauron accomplished was likely a more demanding feat than what the other two did.

The one ring wouldn’t be the one ring, it would be the 1 of 2 rings or the 2 of 2 rings or the 1 of plenty rings or the 6,495,014 of 10,000,000 ring or the not another one of those bloody special preciouses. It’s the one ring because there is only one.

Could Saruman staff be a type of ring?? he seemed to have lost a lot of his power after Gandalf broke his staff. Gandalf lost his staff around 5 times during just a few years with no lost of power, so Saruman staff was different somehow.

Gandalf was able to remove Saruman from the Council of the Wise after being reincarnated and brought back with new authority. The staff breaking is more metaphorical, just means that Gandalf the White has now power over Saruman and can expel him by simply stating the staff breaks. I might be a bit hazy, just woke up, but that is the general idea. Gandalf gained new authority after fighting the Balrog and going to visit Valinor.

@@expredu are correct Gandalf ended up with more power after coming back but when the council was first created Gandalf was pretty powerful he was Galadriel’s choice to lead but he refused or the valar didn’t think he was ready

Kinda defeats the purpose of the ONE ring name if there’s copies of it.

Doylistly, of course, Tolkien was following an old tradition of storytelling, where the world now has become worse in so many ways from the world long ago - the men are weaker and less moral, the winters colder, the children less well behaved, and so on. Nowadays we know that this was due to the stories being told by old men who heard them from their grandfathers and so on, who were all wearing nostalgia goggles, but that's a modern interpretation, and doesn't change what the tradition was.
