is going woke destroying Disney, Netflix and other media platforms?
"Go woke go broke" is a popular term recently to describe companies destroying their reputation and furthermore sales by pandering to the "woke" and terminally online snowflakes. Is this why Hollywood is dying?
If Disney, Netflix, Marvel and others stopped trying to be inclusive but instead focused on simply making good TV shows/movies, would people be less mad?
These are my opinions on the chronically online debates surrounding woke Hollywood and woke Disney.

I’m super disappointed that nobody has cashed in on the “Snow White is a vampire” joke that was running around Tumblr back in the day. “Skin as pale as snow, hair as black as night, lips red as blood” That could be SO scary if someone wanted to twist make it a horror film and I’m patiently waiting for the day for someone to do it

What's weird is that, there are many wonderful, and absolutely original, African and African-American fairy tales that can be told, but there doesn't to be any interest to introduce or hype them up to the new generation.

Yep. Because the goal isn't inclusion, equality, and representation. The woke agenda is self-centered and racist at its core.

This! I am so sick of Hollywood literally slapping new skin on classic stories and calling it "diversity". Brighton kinda has the same problem but at least it's a fresh story and not another unsolicited live action remake (yes I know it's based on a book series, but the show is very different from the books), there are plenty of folktales around the world that are just as worthy as Snowwhite to be adapted into an animated movie by a big company like disney

The extremes don't represent the categories well, on either side. Our society needs to learn to notice when something has gone to that extremist level, and understand the difference. The average person, the majority, disagrees with the loudest, most extreme, miniscule fraction.

As a black man, all of this going on in Hollywood is so dumb. However, some things like the Little Mermaid I feel indifferent about. Like you said, my issue with the movie overall was the design of Halle as Ariel as well as Sebastian and Scuttle. I wanted her hair to be alot more red and look more like the original. Otherwise, I think Halle did absolutely incredible. Her voice is insane and her acting absolutely embodies the character, so I enjoyed it overall. I can understand why people didn't though. Snow White is just a hot mess though. I can't even. Lol.

Also, Latinos can also be white as snow, Latinos skin colour spectrum is proper wide. Disney is cashing in exclusively on nostalgia and controversy, nothing else. I loved how Barbie was creative colourful fun beautiful… and still “woke”.

Same, Halle with red hair would have made it right. And the animals looked scary! As a Spanish person, Sebastian always had Caribbean accent so to my it makes sense it takes place on the Caribbean and mermaids of all colours. My mum always chased me to make sure I had sun cream on in Spain, I remember being little and asking her how Ariel could be a red head a not burn. 😂

Capitalistic exploitation of wokism with a lack of ideas and risk is what is destroying Hollywood. Barbie is a good example of blockbuster which also sends politically positive message, female empowerment but self aware and without a girl boss leader bollocks, with everyone leaving the cinema singing Kens song 😂❤

I completely agree! Diversity and agendas should not be forced upon viewers/customers. It should be natural. And remaking Caucasian characters into non- Caucasian characters should not happen at all (and vice-versa) .They should create new stories/shows/films for non-Caucasian characters. Let them have their own stories instead of re-making previous stories (in my personal opinion).

Why not just make an all original black mermaid princess since there is only one mermaid and one black princess? As a black woman, it's just lazy asf and by the way redheads are a minority too and they deserve to be represented. Most redheads happen to be white🤷🏽

Now the thing is, when the little mermaid first came out she was the first and one of the very few red heads !!! As a red haired girl living in a country full of dark haired/olive skin people I felt so represented and I LOVED Ariel ! I agree, who cares about her skin colour, but sheesh... the absence of red hair in the new film really stings !!! What would be great is if they stopped modifying classics and started creating original films/stories from different cultures !!! The diversity should come from the different origins of the stories.

Virtue signaling is real, and these companies are trying to monetize it lol. Its cringe. I was in the same camp regarding the little mermaid, and i was also a Halle Bailey fan before most people even knew who she is. I used to say that she suited the part well because her singing voice is magical and her face is quite fish-like. However, my stance has changed bc of everything that has come to pass *since* that little mermaid discussion started 1-2 years ago. I didn't realize it was a part of some virtue signaling, woke agenda. I can't get on board with any of it because I see what they're doing and I'm surprised more POCs arent being more vocal about how much of a slap in the face it is. I also think its hypocritical for a demographic who has spoken against whitewashing for so long to now not only have no problem with race swapping (as long as it's a white character getting replaced) but to also comsider anyone who speaks up against it to be "racist". It's a clear double standard, and I can't stand hypocrisy anyway. There was a time when no one wanted to be a hypocrite, it was rightfully frowned upon. Now people do it shamelessly. Disney will be its own demise, the majority of us see through their BS and aren't going to tolerate it. What we're experiencing here is racist behavior disguised as anti-racist activism. In other words: racism is the ironic underbelly of the woke agenda.

Disney is going through their revisionist era.. instead of focusing on original content. Love empowered women, love POC, love social progress, but old tales are from THE PAST, things were different, let them exist as they were, if for no other reason than to show how far we've come.. Let kids decide which stories, characters, etc. they resonate with more. Personally I, have always resonated with the villains 😂

I completely agree with you, I'm part of the lgbt community and I'm not neurotypical, so I'm part of the minority they all claim to represent/give visibility. I'll be honest, the first time i saw a film/serie that represented me I cried, but that was *years* ago, when being all the stuff i mentioned was "wrong" or not accepted by most of people. Now everything feels forced, and it makes me sad, i want to be acknowledged for who i am as a person, not for being part of a "minority". Most of the times people say "now everyone on TV is gay/trans/autistic/etc" and i feel like all this "representation" is making people hate on us even more. However, what i dislike the most is the stereotypes that those shows portrait, and the fact that many of them make the "being a minority" the character whole personality, when in reality it's just a part of our lives.

HATE the word woke because its just a label that people like the news throw around wrongly. Disney especially is using woke wrong and I am really mad that they removed the dwarves when this could have been the great representstion for the dwarf community. Woke originally means people who are "awoken" don't believe in vintage values, like racism and homophobia, and for anyone who just genuinly love everyone no matter what they are. I think the problem is that the characters are just written TERRIBLY and I could not care less that Halle Bailey played Ariel because she did so well in that movie ❤ people are making to big of a deal of this

If you race swap a character because you found the best actor for the job nobody cares, people only care about the race swapping when it's shoved down people's throats for political points on twitter. Lgbtq stuff in movies is a bit odd because I truly believe it's only controversial because studios make a big deal out of it. They advertise their movie based on the "gayness" of a character instead of the actual character, then when people point out that the only characteristic that person has *is* their gayness you get called a bigot. It's like hollywood accepts gay people as long as gayness is the most notable thing about them. It's weird and off putting. All the gay people I know, their gayness is the least interesting thing about them because they are whole people and not one dimensional gaybots.

Oh my god, thank you for addressing this issue! I've been thinking like this for a long time now and I'd never heard anyone talk about it on KZbin really. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's starting to feel very much annoyed at production companies who do not care about the shows and characters and focus more on checking all different boxes instead. I wish the gay characters in any show would stop being filled with stereotypes and instead be the main characters for the same reasons straight characters are and not always be defined by their sexuality. I wish Asians would stop being the eternal supporting geeky characters, and so on. Basically, I'd like this diversity to not just be there in the background but be part of the main cast without their origin or sexuality being the reason they exist. I really don't know if my comment is clear. I probably lost myself in tangents and was very confusing but I hope you get my point Anyway, I love your work. i cant speak about the race stuff cause im white, but im lgbtq and its annoying when you can really feel like lgbtq rep is so forced? at least in british media, it can be eithr super stereotypical and mildly offensive, or just incredibly bland and having no personality other than their identity. you can really tell when an lgbtq character is there to fill quotas, and often times the stories they tell arent original or interesting. everyone deserves representation, but they also deserve GOOD representation.

In my opinion, especially as a mixed race American, race swapping doesn’t really do anything for the marginalized people, it just creates temporary gratification and diversion for extremists so that big film companies- like Disney- can make money of the modern (mostly American) consumer! Create new stories for a fresh new audience with characters that have never seen the silver screen! It’s okay to color blind cast… when the story doesn’t revolve around a specific look for the character or culture. Not to mention, the “remake and replace” agenda in entertainment only uno reverses POC’s with light skinned individuals. It’s sort of racial exclusion and really does nothing for a society (like the American society) so obsessed with modernization and representation.

I think Disney is exaggerating. Snow White is a medieval story, the characters represent the stereotypes of the period, changing them is a mistake. Also in Bridgerton there's this issue, but the colour of the skin isn't the core of the film, and it's easy not to pay attention to it. But in Snow White we are forced to notice the colours of the skin and the other typical peculiarities that characterize our actual society.

It is refreshing to hear someone talk freely about these topics and I find your opinion quite level-headed. Thanks for sharing it with us! Just to add something, personally I think I don't really buy the whole thing about 'representation' (though I respect it may be important for others). I'm a woman but in my childhood I watched films and in general I identified with and supported the protagonists, whatever their gender and skin colour was. I mean, in Scooby Doo you end up supporting a dog xd Of course, I get every person is different, however, I mean, am I supposed to identify myself only with female characters? Are there not other aspects more important than that (like their ideas, their morals, their personalities...)? I find that so strange, the fact that basically I feel I am being told I have to see first the skin colour or the gender or the sexuality... and then the person... I really don't get it :(
@strangestparticle
@strangestparticle 9 ай бұрын
There's a difference between check-listing marginalized people like Disney do and actual representation, of course, but there's a reason why some people still "feel uncomfortable" with diversity. I think that when you reproduce terms like "forced diversity" and "woke agenda" (which usually come from bigots disguised as "an opinion") you help them perpetuate their discourse. When you say something isn't or shouldn't be political you're implicitly acknowledging the existence of a political dimension and trying to deny it to make your idea sound "neutral", as if it were a default feature of nature itself, and that is an extremely political maneuver. Some of your ideas would make sense if we lived in a utopia, but you have to remember that history is not inherently progressive, things can come and go. If marginalized people are not willing to make a stand in order to maintain and improve their right to exist freely, things can go sideways pretty quick. All you have to do is look around to see that many people in our world still have their freedom taken away daily. Now, I understand perfectly that we all just want to watch something GOOD, and you may not want to see gay characters in everything you watch, but there are people like me who are starving to watch a gay Harry-Potter-like saga of 8 blockbuster films, for example. Remember, entertainment does not exist in an isolated bubble, everything has a political dimension, art carries implicit values and assumptions from its creators.

I have no problem with Disney diversifying it's characters. It's aimed at children and I imagine children all over the world delight in seeing themselves represented as a Disney character. But that doesn't mean every main character needs to be black or white. The little mermaid was played by a black actress so why couldn't Snow White have been played by an Asian actress for example? Why are they just swapping races without putting any real thought into it? Regardless, they couldn't have picked a worse actress, she clearly despises the original representation of character she plays!
