@@abramdavidson988 Bad. You have to take bust and band measurements but even then some companies will still vanity size bras, so you'll get something that digs in or offers no support. And unlike badly sized pants, you can't just get a size up and wear a belt. If you don't get just the right fit and support it can cause pain and health problems.

@Diva3807 жыл бұрын
You are 100% right (except I'd add that there also needs to be a hip measurement since hip sizes vary, and maybe a thigh measurement too). And honestly, if there is a way to do this for shirts and dresses as well, it should be done. I just don't even want a name for the size. Just give me the damn measurements. I know what my measurements are and can immediately tell if something will fit me or not once I know the measurements. I'd also like to see the same size on different body shapes so I can tell how the clothing will fit.

If you're a guy and you're looking for anything other than a t-shirt though, you should probably try it on. You usually can't tell if a pair of jeans or pants will fit well just by looking at them, or if they are the right length. If you're looking for a nice dress shirt, like a button up, or something like a suit you definitely need to try it on... Anything other than a simple t-shirt wouldn't come in simple s/m/l/xl sizes.

One time my Dad and I were in SEARS looking for a women's blazer and literally *nothing* fit my shoulders. They were fine everywhere else. We decided to go to a "32 and up" store in the same mall and when we got there the cashier said, "Well, I know the sign says we don't have a size zero, but we do. It actually might still be a bit too big for you though." That was literally the only thing we could find that actually fit. Shopping for clothes is just plain tedious, especially when you're in the body type range where regular brands think you're too fat and brands especially made for a larger physique think you're too skinny to appeal to.

Exactly... For example, my parents traveled from Europe to USA to visit my aunt. While mom was shopping there she saw a shirt that would suit me. She bought the smallest size available and guess what, it is still two sizes too big... And sown in a way that makes room for more than a little belly fat. According to the norm in my country, I am slim, but I'm pretty sure that I would be called 'skinny' over there and hearing comments like I'm skinny and that I'm not a "real" woman. I saw so many video clips and comments written and spoken by "real" american women that I'm wondering what is actually "normal" or "real". Because if the majority is the norm, then I probably am not normal in more ways that one...

I can't speak for everyone but I find that regular pants are too long/baggy in the knee while petite pants are sometimes too short and too narrow in the hips. It really depends on proportions. Some people think petite just means being slender with a smaller chest and straight hips when in reality there are many variations. I often have a hard time finding shirts that fit right because they're either too tight in the chest or too loose in the waist. Sometimes junior's clothing is too tight in the arms/shoulders when the rest of it fits correctly.

The same fit was a UK size 14. A whole 3 sizes smaller. There is no standardisation. These numbers are exactly that. Just numbers. I have a jumper in a size 12 and a denim jacket in a 20. Arbitrary figures. If you are happy and healthy, the numbers o the insides of your clothes means nothing. Just make sure they fit properly. Don't give yourself a muffin top because you wanted to fit in a size smaller. You look better if your clothes fit better.

I am a medium size, generally. But the one time I went to Forever 21 it was so ridiculous. I was an extra large. I honestly don't care what label is on my clothes as long as they fit me comfortably, but going in there as an average sized girl and finding out that I was the biggest size (excluding the plus size section, which was extremely reduced and none of the clothes were actually flattering) made me feel so bad for the people that are bigger than me because honestly, those sizes just didn't make sense. The only good side I can see to that is that girls who are very thin or petite can find clothes that fit them there, or at least I hope!
@laurel68357 жыл бұрын
I am a very tiny girl, as I’ve been told many times. I’ve tried on clothes there and they don’t fit me either. I usually wear the smallest size at many other stores but there I found that the extra small and small were both TOO small. Keep in mind I wear a size 00 in jeans, an XS in most other things and sometimes I even have to look in the kids section as things are too big for me elsewhere! Not to mention when I did find something that actually did fit, it wasn’t flattering at all. They’re marketed towards a very specific body type, tall and very thin. Basically the “model body”, I try to avoid that place because the clothes aren’t flattering and they exclude clothes fitting to like half the population.
@NikoruNinja6 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem with Forever 21! When I went there for the first (and only!) time, I must've been 15 y/o and less than 100 pounds, and generally wear a XS or S, but I was a large in some of their clothes >.>
@Alex-qs9jf6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that you had to feel bad about your size there, but small and thin people like me also need to buy their clothes somewhere. An S or XS is too big for me in most shops, so I always go to one specific shop (not forever 21 though, their clothes are normal size from my experience) that has smaller clothes. It's really important for girls like me that shops like this exist because otherwise we had to go to the kids section and that would be pretty embarassing :/ hope you understand

I remember the last time my friend and I were looking through a Forever 21, we had just happened to wander into the plus size section without realizing it. We had started talking about how it was unfair how unflattering and dull all of the plus size clothing was, while the straight size clothes were all nice and pretty. Neither of us were plus size. A little while later, I was trying on a dress I thought was cute. I'm a relatively small person. I'm a size M in half the stores I shop in, and I'm a S in the other half. In some rare exceptions I'm in the center. S is too small, M is too baggy. Except, apparently, at Forever 21, where I had to SQUEEZE into a 0x. Not an XL, but a plus size dress. There's nothing wrong with being plus size, of course, but *I* am very much not one. The fact that a very small person such as myself had to FORCE a "very large" dress over my head felt wrong on...many levels. The fashion industry is screwed up.

@kaileygray18578 жыл бұрын
David Wheeler But if a woman is say a size 10, but at a certain store the sizing is really small she might not be able to buy a bigger size. There may literally not be a size there that fits her and then she'll feel like crap. The same thing happens to ladies on the smaller end of the spectrum when companies do vanity sizing. Men's sizing makes way more sense since it's often measurements for pants and such. Women need sizing that's not just arbitrary numbers. If I haven't been to a store before I don't know what size I am and then I also have to remember if I was a 4 here or a 6 there or a 14 because the sizing is all over the place.

see it doesnt work as easily for women, because most men wear their actual jeans around their hips whereas a lot of women wear their jeans around their actual waist e.g. where the belly button hits. and some women have very curvy bodies i.e. 60 cm around the waist and 100 cm around the hips, or are less curvy and have 80 cm around waist and 90 around hips. Since women mostly wear pants much more high-waisted than men it makes it really hard to find something that fits. they make it for slightly curvy women usually, so very curvy women are screwed and barely curvy women are as well. I hope that makes sense?

Well, I think "vanity", which Lynn Boorady gives as the reason why the companies lower the size numbers, gives you the wrong idea what's going on in the women's minds. In my opinion "low self esteem and self-consciousness" would be the better phrasing. Because it's not "oh I'm so skinny (and pretty)" but rather "thank god, I might not be as fat (and ugly) as I thought" ... and it's really heartbreaking that you'd have to rely on a number printed on an item of clothing to tell you that

There's also blarg! This company sizing is all off; I don't fit into their 8 (actual 8). I'm going to shop at company z cause they properly size their 8s (actually 10). So many women don't know their measurements and go berserk on Amazon reviews because the "medium" (what they're used to ordering elsewhere) doesn't fit them even though the measurements are spot on. I can never rely on the warnings of sized large or small >.

lz b That's crazy. Pants sizes are all over the place in the exact mix of waistline and inseem. A 1-dimensional scale with only a subjective arbitrary mapping makes no sense to represent it. Also, I don't understand why the sizes are set up in a way that size zero would be a realistic size. I would expect size 0 to be so small that one of the dimensions might literally be zero.

I don't like the comment that ends the video "if you don't like the size just cut it out of your clothes." If you consider the comment in the beginning of this video about Marilyn Monroe being "size 12" or "size 6" you'll realise that women still often get judged/labelled (by men and other women as well) by their size number. Knowing that it's unreasonable doesn't make it any less depressing and harmful. Removing the physical reminder can actually help.
@susanwilliams23927 жыл бұрын
I get that body shaming, and judging people on their size sucks, but I think, instead of increasing the value we place on the number by trying to shrink it all the time, we should try to stop giving it so much clout. I for one know that I am fat and just want to find a damn pair of pants. Making me try on endless rows of clothes that don't fit doesn't raise my self esteem, it wastes my time. Womens clothes need more than one number, just like bras.

Plus pants specifically. You need to account not only for waist but thighs and butt. which can very easily got everywhere also. Since girls don't want the straight cut jeans they want skinny jeans which are tighter and require less gap.

women's pants are also shaped different.. to show off the butt or to make us look slimmer in the thighs. so it not just size we have to worry about but shape as well. i would like if it was just set and didn't change. i would also like to see pant and jeans for men to show off the better parts of there body while also being comfy. skinny jeans can kill the boys and i rather not have my son have that problem. his legs are super slim yet muscular it hard to find pants that are comfy yet don't look baggy. he is also gifted in a area like his father... so i like it if that area be comfortable for him... i do want grand kids some day but i also want my son to look appropriate.

Keeping it abstracted lets companies not worry about needing to different patterns for different body shapes. Someone looking for 36 28 36 a lot more likely to buy something labeled "medium"/8 than something labeled 36 30 40. More likely to pass it up looking for something that "measure" right even though without knowing the exact numbers they might have thought it was good enough. At least that's my guess.
@GearZNet8 жыл бұрын
Essentially this. It's cost effective to produce 5 or so variation as opposed to 100+ slight variations. PS. For anyone reading this understand that cloths rarely will fit you "excellently" directly off the rack, get your things tailored and you'll look 1000 times better.

Most times, I will not find my size in stores. I remember not even a decade ago, shopping in stores where I was a size 3. I have not taken a single pound, I have not lost a single pound either, I am a constant 105lbs. If I try to wear a size 3 now, I literally float in it. I now have to wear 0 or even 00 in some stores. People keep looking at me saying "Oh it's so easy for you to buy clothes, all the stores are made for you." I beg to differ. More often than not, I have to shop in the kids section because everything is too big for me. At some point, I started questioning myself. Am I starving myself? Am I losing weight and not realizing it? Am I becoming anorexic and not seeing it? Until I took a pair of jeans I owned for 10 years, stating "Size 3" and compared to my 00 jeans and they were the exact same size, they fit the same way on me, even though it said they were different sizes. Worst part... They both came from the same store. Different time period, different size. Same store. I have been struggling with my weight for a long period of time. I always thought I was too thin, not curvy enough and slowly the stores started engraving that thought in my mind, making me believe it was true. Now I don't see the numbers the same way I used to. People tell me I shouldn't complain for being so skinny, but it brings a load of problems too, you know. I always have comments like "Eat a sandwich" or "God I wish I had your body" and I'm sitting there, looking at my scrawny arms and anemia and I just tell them "Let's swap. I'll give you my skinny problems and I'll take your perfectly normal body. Here, take my anemia. Take my hypoglycemia. Take my underweight ass and do something with it. I'll just take your body and go buy all the clothes I wish I could have." It usually makes them mad because people don't understand how frustrating it is. I am completely aware that there is a serious problem with our society becoming bigger and bigger, and I know I am "lucky" to be naturally skinny. But it doesn't take away the problems I deal with every single day.

Holy hell, I'm tired of trying to explain this to my brother, and seems that no one understands this. Just because some people claim to be feminists and then go and hate on men, etc, doesn't mean feminism encourages that behaviour. I could say I'm liberal, and act like a republican. Would I be a liberal? No. So, yeah, some people out there tarnishing the name of the movement are making everyone look bad. I'm just saying, because as far as I know, feminism is defined as the movement defending equality between genders. Or it was, the last time I looked it up.

*Fun fact:* European Union tried to make a standardize sizing tool for all ready-to-wear clothes for over 10 years, but it was put down. Mostly because of companies that didn't like the idea and the diversity of the european population and funding.
@DanteYewToob6 жыл бұрын
Why is it that womens clothes are in arbitrary numbers but mens clothes are nearly always in measurements? I'm a 32 waist jeans.. not a 2 or 5 or whatever, I wonder if that also has to do with vanity.. Saying you're a 5 or whatever let's you kinda hide your real measurements, even though it seems to make shopping much harder. As a guy, I can pretty much order any clothes online, sight unseen and be confident that it will fit.. (except shoes! Ugh more dumb arbitrary numbers!)
@홍홍홍-f8d5 жыл бұрын
danteelite the obesity percentage continues to rise (especially in the us) which makes the average size rise as well. so there’s more and more fat people complaining about how clothes don’t fit them so the companies started creating bigger sizes. But these same fat people didn’t like the numbers on the label so they wouldn’t buy them. So the companies changed the sizing chart so that something that’s originally 18 would be something like 14 instead to make them feel better. Which then makes them buy it cause they feel good

My guess, marketing, and price made to appeal to people's feelings of exclusivity. Maybe it's materials if say a certain type of leather is rare or difficult to make. But when it comes to cotton canvas or nylon shoes, come on. Unless the stuff is cordura or kodra, should be cheaper.

Yeah shoes do vary a bit, but I find the main problem is that few brands have varying widths separate to the length. Forcing people with wider feet to buy shoes that are longer than they should be. And some brands are simply ridiculously narrow, so much so that I can't see how they'd fit anyone other than a lady, even though they are mens/unisex
@FaffyWaffel8 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'm the only one but t-shirts are also this way for me. The medium is sometimes a small without a slim fit warning. Brands like H&M make their clothing on the smaller side. Atleast with my experience.

@moichol9388 жыл бұрын

@Commievn8 жыл бұрын
TooUnlucky is right, she was considered slim back then. Most male models back then has quite a lot of bodyfat or not ripped enough for our *high standard* of modeling today. Half a century from now, being skinny fat will be considered obese.
@FatimaHussain20008 жыл бұрын
no she still wasn't very slim since she was at least a size 6-8 while most models now are at the most a size 2, but usually a 0. So while she still wasn't as big as a size 12 she was still way bigger than modern models.
@Mad.E8 жыл бұрын
I think the keyword here is 'modern' ... models back than still had pretty "normal" bodies compared to what we see today
@Sechari8 жыл бұрын
That whole narrative is from the 90s where "heroin chic" along the lines of Kate Moss was "in". Compared to that Marilyn Monroe was "not very skinny" as she had curves, still slender though! Even by today's standards a 6 or 8 isn't "skinny", it's slim, but curvy body types are quite fashionable right now (look at Katey Perry, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj etc) so I don't think anyone's trying to seriously make the point that she was "bigger" anymore.

Liv L that's for men, and it's only waist lines. in girls the height of the waist can differ so much that if the waist is low the measurement is diff to the same girl with a higher waist. they use these numbers for jackets aswell. they're a chest measurement. pants are always inches in men, though. yes. girls have no measurement sizing usually because it's just not helpful..

S. you guys should really get on companies for your pocket sizes that bullshit how little you get.

Ian Dunn Thanks for recognizing how much woman's pants pockets suck :) and I have the same problem as you, but I'm noodle thin. Shirts are either long enough but it looks like a bag of flour, or it fits properly and is made for someone 7 inches shorter than me. And I'm 5 ft 8in, so don't even get me started on how all pants are apparently made for dwarves.
@mynameisambertoo73797 жыл бұрын
I'm 5 foot and its either too tight and fits my legs, or tight/loose enough but too long. My butt also has this problem, as it either fits my waist, and is tight around my butt, or its loose on the waist and fits the bottom. Clothes aren't made for dwarves, trust me, they are probably made for the average height, which is about 5'4. We just gotta suffer through it girl.

If the women were normal sized but nutritionally malnourished, then it's not even worth mentioning in this video. The whole point is that the data set for _sizes_ was insufficient. By saying that there was an issue in the data because the women were probably more malnourished than the normal population, then there is an implication that the sizes were skewed. Either it matters and they chose a contradicting image, or it doesn't matter at all. They claimed that the sizes weren't representative of normal women, but didn't show a single image depicting that.

Buying jeans is hell especially boyfriend jeans or mom jeans, since they don't make a size that fits both my waist and hips/thighs, I always have to size up from 25/26( europian sizing), which would fit my waist, to a size 28/29, so they can fit my hips and thighs, which results in a huge gap on the jeans on my waist, but I usually wear a belt. Anyone know any companies that sell jeans for curvier girls/hourglass shaped girls?

I wish I knew. I have the same problem. If I get it to fit around my hips and my shoulders, it billows out at my middle. I end up altering my clothes.
