I rented a 2016 GMC 1500 with the 5.3 six speed auto. Same thing. I figured being a rental truck there was some kind of programming to prevent drivers from doing things like this. You have just shown me that its not only rentals that have this. The 5.3 has more than enough power to burn the tires up. To get it to do a burnout you will either have to have a skilled tuner alter the programming in the computer to eliminate whatever it is that limits the throttle while the brakes are applied ot you could install a line loc which will enable you to apply the brakes, set the line loc which keeps the front brakes applied when you take your foot off the brakes so the rear brakes will release and the computer will enable the throttle to open fully because it will not see the brakes as on.

I had a similar truck, a 2013 Silverado with the 5.3, 6 speed, 3.72s with the grenade lock, heavy duty tow package, rear drum brakes and skid plates. The only mods were a Volant CAI, 285 70 R17 BF Goodrich ATs and Bushwacker cut out fender flares. It had no problems doing huge smokey burnouts and donuts on dry pavement. I punch the gas all the way down fast and the tires start spinning right away and I let off most of of the pressure on the brakes. Easing into the gas like in this video is the reason why the truck won't do a burnout. By slowly pressing the gas down instead of stomping it is allowing the transmission to slip which can easily overheat it and burn it up.

Wow, I'm really surprised no one has hit on this yet, I've also got a 2012 with 4.8L, gutless from a stand still, you wanna know why? It's because there's no physical linkage between the gas pedal and the throttle body butterfly valve, it's drive by wire remote controlled servo operated. The computer only gives you what it thinks you need and won't allow a hard launch, supposedly to protect driveline components from being damaged by the high hp engine. It sucks.

***** I don't see how any form of throttle can be more instantaneous as a good old mechanical one. Drive by wire has all sorts of things that separate the driver from the the throttle plate. I've driven very many vehicles in my life and I notice immediately the lack of response with drive by wire systems compared to the old mechanical setups.
@Len_M.8 жыл бұрын
Doosterfy I'm not sure how drive by wire could be slower than a mechanical linkage. That would be like saying you can shift a manual Porsche faster than PDK can. Yes, I LOVE manual, but I'm not that diluted. A sequential gearbox would be faster than a traditional manual (and sweet too), but it's still going to be slower.

there is a torque monitoring system in your transmission. its like traction control but you cant turn it off. What it does is it takes the power from the engine to the transmission and pretty much throws its away. Your engine wont go over 2k rpm because the transmission wont let it. If you really want to do a burn out, take out the ABS control box ( Don't know what it's trully called off the top of my head) yes your brake and ABS light will come on because it no longer has ABS.

Its called a stall. All autos have one that don't allow you to rev past a certain rpm in D with the brake applied. I don't know if the truck is just incapable of doing a burnout or what, but as everyone pointed out, it could be a variety of factors. All that I could recommend is hold the brake and gas and rev it to 2k the really quickly let go of the brake. If the wheels break traction then, modulate the brake to do the burnout. If that doesn't work, then its just a factor of more power/different gears and tires
@jwelziscool8 жыл бұрын

Slowly letting of the brake in dissapointment while keeping it floored being a jack ass and they broke loose, made a white cloud and an 11 down the street. For some reason when the brake is applied past a certain point they won't spin, but they're electric so when easing off they will break loose and you will still be stopped. Little bit of brakes, a lot of throttle, then wait for them to spin past 3500 rpms and they'll spin till they hit the rev limiter. At first they will spin slow until 3500.Willing to make a video of you have no luck, I know how pissed I was!!

Your way should definitely work and I'd totally let you try too if you live near me. I know for a fact that TM is off because I manually did it with the tuner. I've seen people do it before and even let a mechanic buddy of mine take it out for a rip. He said the throttle response is shit and that it's gutless until around 3500 rpms like you're saying. I'll have to look at my tuner again and see if I can figure out if there's a way to turn TC off. Thanks for the help, I'll upload an update video soon.

I just break traction and let off the brake and the truck just keeps going until it shifts to third. That's in auto, other wise it will grab after it hits the limiter a few times. It also depends on the type of pavement you are on. My truck was nine stock when I started doing burn outs and now I can do them with 33" tires and only a few minor performance mods
@TheForkliftGuySK7 жыл бұрын
you have what gm calls "anti abuse" mode. it is programmed in to the ECM and TCM after 2011 or 2012. This enabled gm to offer 5 year 100000 mile powertrain warranty without having to beef up the engines or transmissions. no matter how much power you have it will never let the truck rev any higher than 2100 rpm while the foot is on the brakes. hence why you can get it to spin in wet roads (not as much power needed to spin a tire out on wet ground or dirt) but not on a dry road. this is also why lots of guys with the same generation trucks that are 2011 and older can do a burnout and you can't. this is also different from tourqe management. you may hear people call it that. that is totally different. with TM turned off you still will not be able to do a burnout. in the end what you have to do is have someone program a custom tune with the anti abuse mode turned off. Or go buy a 14+ and then you can do one all day long. I was tired of trying to make power out of my 13 with no results thanks to GM's abuse mode always being in the way. I ended up buying a 15. Happy to say my issue has been resolved.

mncarguy I hated my 13 for that. It was an "old man" truck. The functionality and reliability was great. However I'm 29 I still have the urge to burn a little rubber from time to time. I really hated it when you would mash the gas to the floor in those "holy shit I shouldn't have went but now I'm commited" moments where the truck would fall on its face because anti abuse mode thinks I'm trying to blow up the transmission. Eventually enough was enough and I traded in for a 15. Happy to say it's a much nicer truck. alot more usable power. best of luck. and don't waste money on a hand held programmer because you won't feel the difference. Thanks GM for making the Silverado and Sierra a no fun truck for 2011 to 2013.

It's partly a transmission thing and where Chevys make power... I bet on an oily ass road between 10-25 mph if you punch it. It will break then loose.. There's also a trick, gas, tap the brake enough to make it lift the rear a tad, then slight brake and put it on the floor. That slight shift in weight distribution will allow them to get started.
@ChuckBeefOG8 жыл бұрын
I had 3.08's in my '10 5.3 6L80. It wouldn't spin them. My new truck with 6.2L smoke them right off but the tcs/scs is so insane it's ridiculous and comes on automatically at 30mph. The new ones also have torque management so even if you disable scs/tcs, the truck has more than enough to do a rolling burnout but the system limits rpm to maintain traction. Pretty ridiculous they have put so many driver aids in these things because people are retarded and cant drive.
@daylanchavis83558 жыл бұрын
if im not mistaking your truck has. brakes all the way around so i dont think you can unless you either wise take the back brakes off or get a rotar that will fit but cant hold a brake
@gmcdenali71788 жыл бұрын
I know you solved the problem, but, I think it couldn't do a burnout because the engine ain't powerful enough. And, you went from a 3.42 to a 4.10. The higher the number, so the lower the gear, the better the acceleration. That's why it now does a burnout. It mighta did it if you cammed it, supercharged it, or turboed it.
@mncarguy8 жыл бұрын
$1200 to redo the gearing, $4000 to cam it, $7000 to supercharge it. I picked the gearing since it was the cheapest plus I was gonna do it eventually anyway. Working on saving up the $6000 to do a 6.2L swap. Then I'll look into a cam and/or supercharger along with a few suspension upgrades. The gearing has been a great performance upgrade both for the acceleration and towing aspects. She's getting there.

mncarguy $6000 for a Vortec 6200 engine swap? Are you doing the work yourself? Well, I understand why you did what you did.
@gmcdenali71788 жыл бұрын
mncarguy If you do an engine swap, your looking at $16,000 total. $6,000 for the engine + $10,000 for labor and parts. It's cheaper to do the upgrades you mentioned.
@mncarguy8 жыл бұрын
I'll be doing most of the work along with a mechanic buddy of mine. The stock transmission, mounts, harness and computer will work with it. It will need another tune and there's a couple of sensors on the 6.2L that won't work with the current harness but they can be swapped over from the 5.3L. This is what I've read on a few forums and have been told by a few friends. But, as always, I won't know 100% until I'm actually doing it. Found a motor from a 2011 Silverado with 46k miles on it for $3900, my truck has just over 50k miles on it. A tune will cost me another $150 and I still gotta have a talk about price with my friend helping. This upgrade won't happen until next summer at the earliest unfortunately if everything goes as planned.. I'll update everyone as things happen.
@gmcdenali71788 жыл бұрын
Ok, that makes sense. Your getting a used Vortec 6200 and then how your getting it done. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's done. Now how will you notify me? I ain't got a mobile for notifications and I never check my email since I don't really use it.
@lcarrasco2128 жыл бұрын
1) it's a gm, pretty much any gm is set up for the power to be at high rpm's 2) it's a 5.3, very gutless. I used to have one and had trouble doing a burnout too. Get someone to custom tune it to your likings. Canned tunes usually suck. The custom tune will really wake it up

I had a 11' Silverado stock with the 5.3 and 3.42 rear, I could spin mine all day with no problem, no tune, no special tricks. Your truck has issues, take the tuner off, disconnect your battery for 15 minutes and reconnect just the battery and try it again with stock programming.

You have a drive by wire Gas pedal! It's like having a remote control for a gas pedal! It won't do standing burn out because the computer is being told your foot is hard on the break! Thus making the computer hold the butterfly valve open only a small bit. This is why your engine will only rev to 2k rpms. You need to purchase a modified gas/fuel to butterfly valve kit and get rid of the gas by remote control (fly by wire system). Alot of GM products are being produced with this new wireless to butterfly valve system. There installing them by order of federal government regulations to keep people from doing burn outs on the road AND TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT!! You voted for more government regulations and environmental regulations by the the politicians you put there, now you NOW GET what you wanted! MORE REGULATIONS MEANS MORE DEVICES CONTROLLING YOU AND YOUR VEHICLES!

gotta rotate the rear brake adjustment gear a few notches, that'll loosen up the rear end brakeage and allow the motor to overpower the brake being applied by the rear drums, I've tried doing burnouts in my bronco and its got a 5.8L and the rear brakes are just set too tight, haven't got the ambition to crawl underneath and adjust it, and I like the brake ratio I have now anyways in regards to ice and snow. know this is an old video, just didn't see anything mentioned in the comments about brakes, even yet a 5.3L should have no problem at all burning some tread up.

I'm not sure what all was changed from your truck to the 2014-15 models but my 2015 Silverado does not have this problem at all. I have the 5.3 and 3.42 gear ratio in the rear end and I just put 34" tall tires on mine and it will still spin them with ease from a dead stop just flooring the throttle. I've never had a GM half ton truck that will spin tires like my 2015 Silverado will.

also if you want to get around this, you can get a throttle body with a manual linkage, depending on what year your truck is or you can go in to the system with a fancy scan tool like an autel and turn off anything dealing with the throttle or power reduction. an autel scan tool can pretty much drive a car, apply the brakes, and tell you if your truck is running a fever or not. I would recommend trying to find a shop that has one and seeing if they can fix your need for speed lol

I have the same problem on my 2013. Sometimes I can get it to spin if I follow these steps. Disable stiblitrac drop into first hold brake punch gas remove brake fast and then jam the brake fast. You only want to release the brake for about a sec or two then jam it back down while holding the gas. If you do it fast enough you can get it to spin sometimes. You must punch gas don't hold it down for a long time it must be a quick motion gas brake let go of brake then jam brake. If you try to build revs the truck will shut you down

THIS WILL WORK! first apply foot brake. second apply the e-brake PUT IT IN M and you want it to be in first. third FLOOR IT fourth let go of the e-brake by pulling the lever if you have one or just drop the ebrake. your speedometer should be going crazy. YOU MUST DO THE THIRD ANS FOURTH STEP REALLY FAST. idk how much power you got but try in D its all up to you. but you cant back out because this is obviously illegal.

I know it's already been solved but #1 traction control #2 those newer gm vehicles should need the button held for apx. 10 seconds, #3 sometimes they don't want to, I've seen a 6.0 Silverado not do burnouts because it had too much traction
