Scotty has to admit there's a little more than just male ego and showing off...There's also a lot of fun factor involved IMO. I used to go somewhere where there wasn't anyone around and do them while I'm alone, so there wasn't anybody around to try to impress. It was for the excitement, that little thrill you get inside when you're doing a good burnout, or doing it to blow off steam when you're pissed about something. However, I do agree that most burnouts are done to impress somebody by males and it is most definitely stupid.

They call it "exhibition of speed" here. I agree that most burnouts are showing off for the male ego, and are very stupid, but there is just something about it that gets my heart pumping...when I did burnouts it was usually when I was alone and out away from people, so I don't know if that counts as far as male ego thing. I just always found burnouts exciting, or a way to blow off steam when I was upset, but not something I did often after I got older. Ya gotta admit it Scotty...doing burnouts makes you smile, even when you're alone with nobody to show off to, even for us older guys. I pretty much quit doing them a few years back due to the price of tires and everything else, plus traction control took the fun out of it too. It was always tradition in my circle of friends to do a bunch of burnouts the week or two before getting new tires and I always adhered to the tradition. But the last time I did that, I had a Chevy S10 with a 4.3L V6 and I could power-brake it (I know it's really stupid and is really hard on the rear brakes, but I planned to replace them soon too) and smoke the tires as long as I wanted. I did quite a few good tire smoking burnouts over the last couple of weeks before tire day, and then when I went to the tire store, I found out it was $200 each (Toyo...great tires and I wanted another set) to replace them! As the guy told me this, I had flashbacks of those tire shredding burnouts and I cringed to myself, lol.

Another issue (more with FWD models) is often only 1 wheel spins. This puts major stress on the spider gears in the differential. I've seen them explode separating the transmission case due to heat build up associated with the high speed they're spinning due to only one wheel spinning
@landen7900 Жыл бұрын
My rwd only spins 1 wheel. But what if it’s not even close to redline? Redline is like 5k, it can burnout at 3k, and I never do it for even more than 5 seconds, just a lil spin
@Lilquixx11 ай бұрын
I just lock my back differentials
@BrianSu6 жыл бұрын
actually when you do burnouts on a standard transmission, it doesn't wear the clutch out. You're meant to rev the engine up and dump the clutch. People who suffer burnt clutches make the mistake of slipping it. When the clutch is popped out it stops slipping almost immediately thus there is little friction. Also remember that wear is a product of friction + heat so in this situation the clutch plates would still be cool when you do it, thus almost no wear on the clutch.

Doing a burnout in an automatic transmission is especially hard on it. Winding the engine will holding the brakes (or not if you got line locks) makes the torque converter spin really fast building up A LOT of pressure and heat. Two things that will lead to premature wear on parts like the clutches and bands. Most people don't have line locks and just floor the petal until the engine overcomes the rear brakes. A lot harder when your rear brakes are calipers. Front wheel drive I'd assume is the same if not harder to overcome the brakes as most passenger vehicles don't really have enough engine torque to do this. You would just burn up your clutch or burn out the bands and clutches in your auto trans.

When I was younger I drove a 69 fastback Mustang with a built 302. I remember being on a quiet street in front of a friends house and wanting to get his attention. I looked around and nothing and no one any direction. Then, I lit them up and started to spin around in the street, Tire smoke was coming in through the trunk of the car when I noticed the Sheriff sitting in his car behind me. He saw the whole thing! I thought for sure he was going to bust me, but he drove by with two thumbs up! lol

My mom had a 69 Thunderbird 429 she was in the drive thru at the bank and reached out to get the transaction tube and when she did she had her foot on the brake and somehow floored the throttle and completely smoked out the drive thru and didn't even realize it was her doing it lol! So awesome !!

well technically its 2x5=10 or so, unless its only one person and to get those 5 HP he will have to get very creative or .....ok lets just stop there.

In New South Wales AUSTRALIA you are fined for doing an aggravated burnout and possibly car impounded for 30 days. No Aggravation involved.... I loved it

When I was a kid, my older brothers had a 67 Mustang that they bought used for $400 and souped up. One time, they took me to a deserted road and did a massive burnout for what seemed like 30 seconds. Of course, the tire blew out and we were left there in a huge cloud of smoke to change the tire. It wasn't very impressive. Good thing the cops didn't show up.

Australia here, majority of the time we call it a burnout. The police use that term because it caters for any tire slippage even if it's not a full burnout.

I’m in England and I’ve never heard it called breaking traction in normal conversation! Pretty sure we all call it a burnout too! And the general rule for if a cop sees you is to put those freshly heated sticky tyres to good use! If you’d seen most of our cop cars though then you’d know that this isn’t a hard thing to accomplish! Sorry but I flat out refuse to be pulled over by a Nissan micra! And if it ever does happen and they say do you know why I pulled you over, I can say yeah, because I let you!

When I was 15, I got a 1976 Dodge Aspen with the high output 4 barrel V8. The car would roast the rear tires if you just looked at the gas pedal. Front tires were the original F78 bias plies. Rear tires were worn smooth almost every two or three weeks, and I would go to the auto wrecker and pick up a used pair of anything (even bias-ply snow tires with the square shoulders) for 15 or 20 $ to do more of the same... ahh, life in the 1980s!! . . The Aspen lives on in mint condition 30 years later!
