@Weighty68 Жыл бұрын
This was a task of mine watching through over the past week or so and I'm glad I finally made it to the end because this video was just excellent. Centering the analysis around what led into Resi 4 and the legacy it left behind is super smart because, regardless of what iterations are made in the future, Resi 4's DNA is felt in almost everything that's come since. Even more clever was your decision to show brisk footage of every game affected by it. Never crossed my mind to think GTAIV had taken a caricature of the limb targeting system and made it fit within the bounds of GTA, but it's so sneakily implemented looking back! Crazy to think how a slight repositioning of the camera behind Max Payne would lead to what Capcom whipped up here. Having just played it for the first time FINALLY a couple months ago, I was blown away by how much I didn't know was in the game despite seeing so much footage of it over the years. Little things like the barn boss fight, or the castle Ashley defense segments conjuring John Wick-level stress or even the whole build up to the Salazar fight absolutely surprised me in how expressive it all was to this day. I love TLOU and Dead Space and always had a soft spot for Half-Life 2's immaculate pacing, yet after playing RE4 I may have found the best blend of all those design ethos(es) in a game that really invites any kind of lens you peer at it with. I think your points about discovering the tone when you were younger and relishing in the tightrope it walks in making sure everything it throws at you always has a little spice to it are the things I felt most with my time. Anyway, incredible work as always and hope to see you tackle whatever the series holds next in store. :)

19:56 There is nothing wrong with the gameplay mechanics in REmake. RE Zero's problems ARE the new mechanics, the dropping stuff everywhere option leaves players backtracking far more than they used to. Tank controls and fixed cameras were never an issue except for pretentious hipster critics who wanted to feel important. That's a fact.
@Artesian_mirage Жыл бұрын
@@OpenMawProductions Yup. A lot of this video uploader's script is so obviously derogatory towards the original style of resident evil, and then speaks of RE4 as if it had absolutely no flaws. The bias is incredible. Also he got parts wrong regarding the initial development of RE4, he starts off correct regarding Devil May Cry, but then much like a lot of misinformed people, he just mashes 3 other RE4 prototype scrapped builds into the Hookman version, and infers that it was cancelled because it wasn't good enough and they were wasting money (they were wasting money, but thats wasn't the major reason the Hookman iteration was cancelled). The uploader should really do better, more in depth & factual research before uploading a documentary based video.

Such a great video about one of my favorite games, much respect to you. This video is a hidden gem that I hope will soon be recognized by the algorithm. I had so much fun watching it, and it gave me some great insight around the context of RE4, which is often overlooked. I also really appreciate the subtle jokes that are unfortunately most of the time (for me at least) an annoyance in other long form essay videos that are similar to this one. The only thing that I wish would be included in newer RE4 essays is the relatively recent discovery that RE4 stole some textures from a book and at first did not credit the author, this is very sad because it drags down such a beloved game.
@Ming1975 Жыл бұрын
I'd rather RE4 be "remastered" to get rid of the tank control with graphic update instead of a remake with game play that's actually inferior because it doesn't make me want to replay it, just like the remake RE2. I never knew those was optional bosses, I always thought I had to fight them all.

Q: Why Won't Resident Evil 4 Die? A: You can't kill what's already dead (dead on arrival, one might say) The original RE was a gamechanger - it has one handedly created the genre, with mechanics and aesthetics which would be used in the future not only for that genre alone and not only by CAPCOM (just check out how many so called "RE-clones" has been released since 1998). As it was said in the video, RE4 creators just searched for what was popular at that moment in time and just decided that RE will now be a third person action-shooter with lots of QTE's - the decision that almost killed the series itself. If the original release of the original Resident Evil remake wasn't a Gamecube exclusive sales would have MUCH BETTER figures and the genre itself would continue to prosper. Yes, IMHO it wasn't the tank controls/fixed camera/pre-rendered graphics fatigue that staggered the RE remake - it was the exclusivity, and the figures for the modern platforms' re-release of that game (and the Zero one's) are more than enough to understand that. Fast infected became a thing in the modern movies? Well, they still could be zombies in the game - just look like zombies walking in RE2/RE3 remakes. Are those too slow? Nah, I don't think so. Are they using some weapons, screaming something in spanish and completely ruining the perception of the whole series? Nah, it's all good. And that's why RE4 remake is indeed a good thing that happened to all of us 'cause RE4 NEEDED TO BE FIXED! More than enough people on the web (well, sane people, I'll give them that) were saying the same thing over and over again - maybe RE4 was indeed a great game for it's time, but it wasn't a great RE game. And now we have RE4 that definitely can stand a punch when someone asking "is this a survival horror?".
@Artesian_mirage Жыл бұрын
Yup, agree totally. And When people like the uploader say people were getting tired of fixed camera angle tank control iterations of Resident Evil, they only ever quote and reference gaming journalists, paid critics, but provide zero evidence of what actual fans outside of journalism really wanted at the time. But then people like the uploader would immediately counter-argue with, "Well the poor sales for RE Remake and RE Zero told us exactly how the fans felt about it" but like you said, it's not that simple, a huge part of why the sales dropped was because of poor decision making when choosing consoles to exclusively release RE games on.

Why do you make a distinction between "great for its time" and "great RE game"? Would it be bad then and good now if it was more survival horror? For what it's worth, as a new fan thanks to RE4R specifically (and I do admittedly prefer action to horror), the original, which I've been playing constantly since I got it a week or so ago, is still excellent, and that's coming from someone who played the Remake over half-a-dozen times. And I still wouldn't call the remake a horror game at all - it has crafting, durability and the regenerators, otherwise you're parrying chainsaws and doing roundhouses. Plus: no, third person shooters in the same sort of over-the-shoulder angle as RE4 were not prevalent. The video itself shows it pretty well; I'd say Max Payne is probably the most influential third person shooter prior to RE4, and that still has a noticeably more "floaty" camera. And QTEs weren't popular either. Which games were successful or plentiful enough prior to RE4 that featured them prominently? I get your perspective, but blaming a game for what you *think* it inspired is unfair.
