It took a while to get started, but worth it in the end

Congratulations Jamie! Hearing an engine that you built come to life for the first time is quite exhilarating and it shows in your reaction. Before you know it she will be driving off under her own power!!

It was a joyful day when it finally fired into life. I have “driven” it back into the garage so I know the clutch and gearbox are working

Fantastic! it's 0 degrees celsius here in Niagara Falls and snow in the forecast but I am going to put the top down and windshield down and take my 1950 TD for a celebration spin. Well done!

Great job Jamie! Make certain to run at 2000-2500 RPM for approximately 20 minutes to break in camshaft and lifters. Glad to see you found your motivation!

Thanks Jody. Yes I will be setting up a tacho soon and give it that break in run.

Haha. I made that distributOr timing error way back in 1963 when I rebuilt my first engine at age 17. My 1622 engine has two positions marked on the cam pulley one crank turn apart for aligning the dissy. Good job and it sounds just luvverly.

I’ve heard that this mistake happens quite a bit. I’m glad I’m not the only person stuffing up

Hi Jaime, well done and congratulations on yet another milestone! Exciting times when they come back to life. Just a suggestion on the wiring. Very good move adding the fuses, however for your high load devices like headlights/taillights, fuel pump, and starter relay, I would add relays to those circuits so the amps are being taken up by the relays, rather than the switches. There's kits available and there is an immediate payout for the lights as you'll have more current going to them, making them brighter in the process. Keep up the great work. She's coming along great.
@MGREBUILD4 жыл бұрын
I have been thinking about adding relays for this exact reason. Do you have any details on these kits?
@mikerobinson20264 жыл бұрын
Jaime Moss sells a headlight Relay kit, but they aren't limited to just headlights. You can power any high load device with it. mossmotors.com/headlight-relay-kit They have a video explaining how to wire them in and the advantages of using them also.

Thanks Mike. I will check them out. If it is not too difficult I might just make up my own.

@@MGREBUILD BITD they had to be. they were often crank started and you couldn't give them more than one turn at a time. they still had the lucas electrical system stuff back in '61 and i HAD to hand crank my '61 mga on occasion. :)

¡Qué magnífico trabajo!. ¡Mejor que cuándo salió de fábrica!. ¡Ánimo!, ya falta muy poco...

I don’t know if it is better than factory, it still needs tuning and timing. It certainly was good to hear it running again

@@MGREBUILD ¡Sí!, suena como un coro celestial, igual que cuando nuevo. ¿Es un TC?, uno de mis clásicos preferidos. Adelante, ¡viva MG!.

I hope to give it a bit of a tune over the weekend so it should sound a bit better after that. My car is a TD, but the engine is the same as a TC, other than being bored out to .060” and putting 1 1/2” SU’s on it

@@MGREBUILD Para ti será fácil afinarlo. Estoy deseando volver a oírlo. Tiene un poco más de 1,25 litros y calculo que entre 55 y 60 HP. El XPAG es un motor espléndido. Salud.

Thanks. I have given it a rough tune up and is running a lot better now. Hoping to get at least 60HP, but I might be a bit optimistic.

these cars don't need a timing light to time the. they can easily be statically timed using a tiny light bulb and some wire. from the fire coming out of the exhaust manifold and no indication of any firing under compression it was showing all the symptoms of being a massive timing problem.
