I didn't know the video you did was of a imaginary product, until I checked the comments on said video saying it was an ad for a series on Channel 4 apparently. Felt bummed out that the link to their website didn't work in my country but it's not a reason to hate Hatfilms.

I, personally, wasn't even particularly disappointed. Perhaps a little irked that, after some digging, I DID find out that it was, in fact, for a show that I can't watch (since I'm in the US), but only in that since it wasn't indicated it was an #AD, it was pretty much a waste of my time from the point where the video ended to the point I figured it out. I'm perfectly fine with the Hat boiks doing this sort of thing, I like that they actually roped me in by eschewing the "#AD", so it was immediately obvious it wasn't "real"; immersion is fun!

Can someone explain what they're talking about?
@VideoSage6 жыл бұрын
Smith, I think the issue is what Ross is talking about, the disappointment of finding out an interesting product is fictional, not from the video that presented it as real, but after the fact. I personally intended to look into it later after work, thinking how cool that was- I was indeed quite disappointed that it wasn't real, and also that it wasn't clearly disclosed. Ideally, a end slate on the skit would have had a "Shipping to a BBC Channel 4, near you!" or something like that, to make people question the validity of what they just saw. As Trott points out in this video, many think of you all as trustworthy, as never misleading. As sometimes actually looking at new technology, and doing small reviews on it from time to time. Usually your skits are fairly obvious, and over the top, so it's easy to differentiate content. Your intention here obviously wasn't to mislead, not in a malicious way, but in a comical way- the execution of that though, is what I think you guys failed to pull off. Should people be outraged? No, I don't think so- but I do think it's foolish to not realize a note-able mistake was made here.

@rorytowler34646 жыл бұрын
I don't really care about if they 'white lied' to the fanbase or not (it's not really a lie worth getting upset over). The real issue is Smiths contempt for viewer trust. Even if the type of videos you create are not really in need of trust, the truth is that most of your fans are very long time viewers and have in some way built trust towards what Hat Films means to them. This trust could be something like knowing Hat Films won't promote a bad product that affects viewers. So when Smith has essentially disregarded the need for fan trust and speaking about how it's worthless it is, it rubs me (and I imagine a lot of people) the wrong way. I like you Smith and you can say what you like as it's your channel, but as an extremely long time fan who's bought merch and supported the channel in many ways now, I'm not a fan of your views on viewer trust. That's all really. Love you guys and then content you make xoxo
@adamsneath69766 жыл бұрын
Surely it's a really important lesson, that is don't trust people on the internet that you've never met.
@KingOfTheInterWebs6 жыл бұрын
I agreed with him about how people expect something out of a channel. You get outrage over channels that are in no way marketed towards kids getting flak for not being good role models, which is just stupid and imposing. At the same time though, people are going to come to expect things, especially out of something their familiar with. I think he's right that there's no particular reason we should trust three people we don't actually know, on the internet and if they find something they want to do then why the hell shouldn't they do it? But it's a bit more than just some social construct, it's down to how we build trust. If we're familiar with something, we trust it, if suddenly one week Wednesday was skipped and we went straight from Tuesday to Thursday we'd be a bit put out. At the very least we'd want to know why and what it meant for every other week afterwards but at the end of the day it wouldn't remotely affect our lives. It's illogical and sometimes unhelpful, getting upset every time something unfamiliar comes along but it's not just going to disappear because we think it's silly.
@JohnSmith-io4xj6 жыл бұрын
@KingOfTheInterWebs You had me for the beginning but the end made no sense. We are pattern creatures, evolutionarily it’s efficient to be so because it helps you to avoid unnecessary risk. On your point, it’s actually entirely logical to be unsettled about a regular pattern being broken because it, in most organisms, forms the basis of how we see our day to day world. We don’t like change because it calls in to question how stable that foundation is. I’m a psychology major so I’m taking from my studies but I’m not saying that this episode is going to rock people’s belief about HatFilms but they can feel unnerved (annoyed or whatever you wanna call it) about that sudden switch. It’s just the most natural reaction to change, not illogical at all.
@jackshipway15036 жыл бұрын
I can see where you’re coming from but I think Smith’s meaning may have seemed more negative since he’s a bit pissed off with the ‘outrage.’ In reality I think what he’s saying is that some people may have been disappointed and feel it was a few minutes wasted but that’s where it ends. The same as if a friend tricks you into believing something for a little bit and then reveals it to be a joke, they’re probably not expecting you strike them out of your life but laugh and move on with them. Big love to a fellow Hatter and keep on cuckin’ 🤘
@rorytowler34646 жыл бұрын
I think that's a fair point. I'm not actually upset or angry at anything they have done or said, It's just I find they way Smith talks about it a little bit unsavoury. I've watched hatfilms since I was small and their videos have got me through hard times so there is nothing but love towards them from me. I personally think that the fanbase's reaction is (mostly) quite endearing. Not many people are as fortunate to have a community that actually cares. I'd much rather have a localised controversy than have some mindless fanbase who follow the creator like some cult of personality. I'm quite happy to be reading through the comments section and seeing some really polite discussions on the matter.

Here's my problem with the Azanaband video, I'll say right away, I'm not offended or upset. Considering you've done tech reviews/unboxings in the past I believed the video to be real, kudos to you guys on your acting skills, it was perfectly done, I believed that a band like that could be capable of minor shocks or a feeling of being cold etc. etc. Not being English I had no access to the website to find out it wasn't real, I posted the video to a few places to share it, as I thought it was some cool tech, I then had to be told by my English friends "Hey this isn't real, it's an ad for this show on English TV" That made me feel like an idiot, of course it's not real, how could I be so stupid and gullible? Nobody likes feeling that way, and because of that I felt sort of betrayed by you guys, now I know logically that that's not the case, like I said I'm not upset, but that's how I felt at the time, and it just left a bad taste in my mouth, I didn't lose anything, I wasn't scammed, but I was made to feel foolish

For the record, I don’t think there’s any sort of advertising that would make me stop watching hat films, by far the best and most entertaining Channel on here, plus it gives them amazing opportunities for videos we otherwise wouldn’t get to see. And that’s the main reason I watch you boiks

Just so long as your new brand deal is for a real thing we can get hyped about....ooh, controversy :o) Very glad to hear the thought process behind the Azana band video and, as I have previously mentioned, people just dislike being made a fool of and I very nearly made a fool of myself based upon the content of the video by believing what you guys were telling me and taking that information to pass on to others. But that really would have been me making a fool out of myself by not doing my own research on the subject and following the advice to visit the website. Still, I liked the video because it was well made, watched it twice to see if i could detect the "acting" and ultimately thought the whole thing was pretty cool that you got to work with mainstream TV on a project when countless other "bigger" KZbinrs didn't, so well done. The whole thing about brand deals pisses me off though as why would viewers, who claim to love your content, not wish for the channel to keep going strong and continue to be a viable source of revenue for you guys? This is my reason for being a Twitch Scrubsriber for the last couple years+ despite only being able to view live a hand full of streams. Not looking forward to the day if/when you guys decide it is time for something new so I'll happily continue to pay to watch you monkeys dance for my entertainment and brand deals are so much more lucrative than my paltry offering so brand deal away :o)

I watched the video and even though I was really interested in the product but I never looked at the website. When I eventually found out I wasn't annoyed I was proud and excited that you got into such a big and cool opportunity

Agreed that it's just ridiculous that some people were outraged. Didn't feel offended, but slightly deceived for sure. Without the website (aka for everyone outside of the UK, and for people who weren't bothered to check it out) it really, really felt like a legit unboxing review (which was your intention). THAT was the problem (at least for me). The fact it was advertised just gave people more things to whine about. The thing about April's Fools is that you know it's April's Fools. It'd have been a great April's Fools joke. April's Fools be April's Fools (sick of that word now). Regardless, I've moved on with my life and grabbed some popcorn.

To be a voice of encouragement instead of letting the comments all be grumpy sods. I liked it. incredibly clever promo. I'm glad you guys got to be a part of it and those that were offended clearly can't take a joke so I don't see how they can watch your stuff anyway, you beautifully sarcastic men!!

I remember reading the entirety of the SONY EULA / ToS back on PS3 when they sent out a message to everyone that there was a change, way, way back. You know what I found out? There was a specific portion that stated "We reserve the right to change service fees at any time, without notice." This also means that if you had a saved credit/debit card, they could bill you with/without notice. (IE: They wanted to change how the PSN functioned, and make it similar to how Nintendo plans to do it.) But this was removed from the TOS / EULA and now only affects PSPlus / etc. and not PSN as a whole.

I was fooled by the thing but that doesn't mean that I should be offended. Who cares about what people get offended about, keep making videos you guys enjoy and doing what makes you guys happy, Hat Films! Love you guys.

I thought whoa the Azana Band is insane then saw the Channel 4 ad for it a few days later. Then thought Chanel 4 had taken you guys for a ride by giving you a "fancy" shock collar!! Thanks for clarifying ;)

I wasn't offended. I was deceived but no harm no foul right? I thought the video was amazing and I was very entertained. That's the end goal right? Entertainment. I really hope this doesn't deter you from doing future fun videos like this. I feel bad because you guys seemed super into the idea and very disappointed people didn't like it.

The only thing I'm offended about is them talking about it the whole video. There were some really good moments in this that no one said a word about because they (mainly Smith, Trott and Ross were fine) were offended that other people got offended.
@conorlennon11356 жыл бұрын
Caleb Hughes rightfully so I say. From all the talk of unique humor that comes out of hat films I'd think people would be more understanding of these kinds of things. I'm glad Smith approached it aggressively, because if people can complain, he can complain. To assume one should silence themselves because one decides to vocalise their opinion is terrible, people deserve to defend themselves. Be happy they didn't do a solo video defending themselves. If they did that I reckon you'd be a lot more understanding because techniquly you weren't "missing" your GTA.

Keep doing what you're doing, guys! I was not offended, only disappointed that the website was locked to the UK.

It nice when they don't agree. Then you get some good dialog going rather than the ordinary echo chamber they always have going. You get new ways of thinking about things.

I didn't care until Smith tried to make a comparison between the silly stealth-promo and cashiers at a supermarket. No, it's not the same thing.

I think the video was a really cool and different way of promoting the show. The fact that it had me fooled only impresses me.

Was I bummed it wasn't real? Yeah, bc it looked so cool. I'm not going to go on a witch hunt to try and bring down the credibility of hatfilms.

honestly I really don't care about you doing sponsored videos, the fact that you guys upload a video every day is more then I can ask for and is the highlight of my evening. if people get offended over a little harmless prank, then perhaps they should re-evaluate their life choices and get a sense of humour.
@elden32666 жыл бұрын
I think most people were more confused than offended. It seems like Smith is more offended about it than we are.The video genuinely made me think the product was real until I had to scroll through the comments to realise it wasn't. That's when you know the video was completely misrepresented. Instead of calling out some of your audience for being stupid(calling your own audience that is just ridiculous) or offended, admit that the mistake was made and move on. Still really like you boiks though
