She came about during an interesting time in the 90s when "Feminist" meant just carrying on about the business of being a badass and sometimes it just happens the badass is female. (And the Kiwi/Aussie actors coming out were classically trained like the Brits - Lawless certainly has proven her chops.) Of course it helps that Lucy Lawless is hot AF, but she definitely comes off as being able to take care of herself.

Thank you! I'm a man myself, but whatever feminism has become today, even I can see it's a far cry from what it once was. Feminism was never about hating us men or trying to compete with us men. It was about empowerment and just being yourself as a woman. Back then, us men could get behind that. But now... it's just turned into something terrible. And worse: political.

Xena is the kind of woman who would volunteer for combat if there were a war. She'd probably insist that the draft apply equally to both men and women. Feminists in real life, on the other hand, never fight for their right to fight and die in war along with the men, because they don't truly want equality. Basically, they're hypocrites.

@maevelin5 жыл бұрын
I think because there was genuine emotion between her and Borias. It was not just seduction. When Borias and her felt things for each other there was a bond deep down and while both of them were corrupted Xena could see that Borias was capable of honor. They both were criminals, monsters, conquerors and warlords so It was a fair game between them as they both knew there would be a time when they would be unfair to each other because of their nature so their trust at that point was not solid. Xena at that point was not naive anymore and it is interesting that this happened after what Caesar did to her. By all intents and purposes she shouldn't be able to forgive Borias but the fact that she did even in a dark corrupted way showed she still had humanity left in her and was capable for love. Also Borias betrayed her after Xena kept pushing his limits over and over again and was becoming destructive for them both. Deep down however there was love and Borias was capable for redemption too. Xena had also taken him from his family and she knew that Borias had to love her or at least feel something profound for her aside lust so to deny his son. She must have seen the aftermath of that decision on Borias which still stayed by her side. And the way Borias felt for Solan and even the centaurs in the end proved that there was good in him that Xena had seen and felt even if she couldn't have appreciated it fully from the start. Borias had mellowed down by the end but there were glimpses of that potential in him from the start and Xena had always been perceptive. And not to mention that when they were together they were truly together. It was explosive and primal. It was hate, lust, passion and...love. Borias was not a refined man either. He was a barbarian in many ways, a savage but wickedly smart and had a beast in him that called to Xena because they were alike in many ways. Caesar on the other hand was all for power. There was attaction and a mental challange but there was never any real emotion by his side. He would always take advantage of the circumstances to get to his goals and Xena was nothing but a pawn for him. Then he crucified her. Borias was capable of cruelty just like Xena but deep down he was capable for devotion, had a code and had the honor of a warrior just like Xena while Caesar was simply inhuman despite what he may or may have not felt for Xena that didn't even register in his persona. All those things had a different impact on Xena and shaped the way she viewed and felt for those two men. That's why she was able to forgive Borias in the same way he forgave her too while that would never happen with Caesar. And deep down I think that Xena was secuded and intrigued by Ceasar but never loved him or felt anything truly genuine for him in the way we saw her feel things for Marcus, Borias, Hercules, Gabrielle and even Ares.

@@rovhalt6650 Exactly. Strong woman does not see themselves as feminist or fighting for 'women's rights' all the time. She's driven by something she needs to do and try to adapt. The movie was not labeled as feminist, but as time goes by, it can be defined as positive feminism.

Not really sure if an "action" type TV show character would be a "feminist icon" ?
@mosj98765 жыл бұрын
I understand that action and femininity are not two words related to each other but men can show love and compassion and Hope, which are deemed feminine qualities. I think it's just the use of the words to mean one type is masculine and the other is feminine. Xena fighting can be considered masculine trait but knowing she is a woman we don't take that trait literally. I wouldn't call joxer feminine because he can't fight. Even though the high school bullies would call him a girl because he can't fight. It's just psychology in the use of the terms from literal to metaphorical to allegorical. So Xena fighting doesn't stop her from being feminine. I mean she did have sexual relations with Hercules.lol
@99thJediWarrior2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you would define "feminist". You could use the example the show provides... or today's example with women essentially pissing and whining about how bad men are and everything that we do is so bad.
@Xedokai5 жыл бұрын
One problem.. She isn't an ideologue with a victim complex. She can't be a feminist. Nor an icon for said ideology.
@mosj98765 жыл бұрын
The whole idea behind feminism was about being treated fair and equal. Having the same rights as men. Feminism now is a joke because it's about entitlements and being a victim under the patriarchy. The show was none of that. The reason Xena is a feminist icon is because of her knowledge an experience through pain and suffering hardening her to become a badass. All of it, good and the bad. She fought for the less fortunate, the weak, and the helpless. Which means she fought not only men but also against evil women. She not only saved men, but women as well. She is an icon but just like everything it gets twisted to mean something else. Into an ideology.
