You are doing good by not trusting them, however even if you install custom firmware they are probably still getting your information using additional layers (similar to how Intel installs its "Intel ME" on its CPUs)

I've always had samsung phones namely the note series and they've been second hand purchases. I needed a new smartphone as my old galaxy note 4 died just after Christmas. On boxing day I ordered a xiaomi mi max 3 and it arrived 2 days later. I can honestly say it's the best phone I've ever used and I only paid £199 for it. The battery life is awesome and it's slick and smooth to use and best of all is that huge lcd screen and no risk of screen burn. It's colour accuracy is near perfect. Granted it's no flagship killer but it does everything so well and you can't complain really with such a low price tag. I've also bought xioami's bluetooth earphones which sound great.

I have 2 Mi Box S from Xiaomi and they were bought at low prices. I have learned how to use the Android TV using these but I just ordered a Fire TV 4K so to get the Dolby Atmos sound for my TV's sound system. The Mi Box S doesn't have this and the Nvidia Shield is just too expensive just to get this sound. Also, Nvidia may release a newer model soon.

The secret is the software updates. I paid 90€ for a Redmi 7A and I'm getting the same software updates as the most expensive xiaomis. The secret is just that. The Redmi 6A released in 2018 is getting Android 10 and Miui 12 for that price? It's impressive. And my Redmi 7A probably is going to receive Android 11 and Miui 13 in 2021. They make sure that their customers are very happy after a long time and repeat with the same brand. You don't need custom roms on Xiaomi for years.
