Today I bring you an opinion piece. Well, a fight for what I think is right. Doing my bit as an influencer to influence for the better…good.
Today I want to discuss a product that I feel has been pushed aside recently, even I’ve said this product isn’t a must have, but its actually a product that I use religiously, every single day and made great improvements for my skin. And that’s a toner.
Whilst a toner isn’t even considered to be a must have when it comes to a basic skincare routine, I feel that…it should be. Good toners add hydration to the skin, and a lot of toners are crossing that fine line between toner and essence hybrid and are often packed with amazingly beneficial ingredients.
So please listen to my fight for why I think you should use a toner as part of your morning and evening daily skincare routine!
Todays video is sponsored by HaruHaru. they are a Korean brand known for their fermented ingredients and skincare products that can easily be introduced to your daily routine. We’ll be taking a look at their black rice fermented toner later and doing a little science experiment that will show you how amazingly beneficial some toners can be!

I know this might sound silly considering that anything in that price range may not have all the benefits for great looking skin in its product, but money is so tight for me raising 2 teen boys who also need skin care products and still needing to care for my skin. Personal experience: I agree with James. I think for a person who has skin that is dehydrated but can get oily and acne-prone, hydrating toners, and essences/serums have made the biggest difference in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. I know a lot of people don't believe that they can do much but if your skin feels tight in the middle of the day (with a layer of oil on top :TMI 😂), hydration steps can make all the difference!

Yes to this! On the days I feel like I need it, my Paula’s Choice BHA (is this considered a toner? I feel like it is as much as it is a treatment?) actually gives my skin comfort and relief on top of helping my breakouts. If I use it too regularly my makeup can look flakey because of the exfoliation, but that’s when other ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid (sealed with another moisturizer on top during the dry months so it has something to draw from instead of stealing moisture already within my skin) come in handy. :)

Honestly, it’s so refreshing that James is willing to listen to different sources and go against KZbin skincare trends. While there’s obviously some merit to other viewpoints, it just gets exhausting to constantly hear “all fragrance is bad, all witch hazel is bad, all toners are bad” etc from all the skincare influence. James injects some much-needed nuance into the conversation and I love it!

Same here. Influencers tend to change their opinion a lot according to trend. It's fine if they're learning and experiencing new things and trying to educate us. But it gets annoying when it's all just a trend to bash certain ingredients or brands and totally canceling them out.

I’ve always loved toners before I started to learn more about skincare and then I just stopped because I’ve heard Hyram say that they’re not necessary but then after a while I just learned I need to have my own opinions on skincare cause it’s my skin and if something works...it works! Even he says to go to multiple sources and do your own research so you can come to a solid conclusion. But really I’ve been looking at the HaruHaru toner for a while now and I’ve heard so many good things about so after I’m done with my sample of the Plum Plump from GR I might give this a try!

Toners may not be “necessary” but honestly none of this is, really. I think toners can be lighter and have an easier to handle texture, and just as many good ingredients as serums which can be sticky or too much. I know a lot of people say eye creams are pointless, but I have one that I love using before I put on concealer because it just makes it visibly better than if I don’t use it. Almost like an under eye primer. I think I see a difference though and I really don’t mind trying them. Some people buy handfuls of different serums and such and don’t use them up so I really don’t think it’s any less of a waste of time than that. Toners are also just so refreshing if you have oily skin and don’t want a thick serum on your face throughout the day.

I agree, toners are a great way to add hydration. Whether or not toners are "necessary" depends on skin type, condition, and ingredients in the toner, but generally, I recommend them to everyone. Though if a client is on a budget, and has to make a choice between products, then I would probably steer them toward purchasing a serum instead, as that would have multiple benefits.

this is so cool! I used to work for LOHBs which is like a Korean Sephora!! And I remember Haru Haru promotion week! The skincare hack for Haruharu product is to wet the Ultra fit facial pad with the toner and leave it on the skin for 15 minutes. It's a Korean skin hack!! I'm just surprised to see people actually know this brand!!

Toner is my favorite step in skincare and was the reason I got into skincare. As someone who lives in a humid country, toners are enough as the only step so cleanse > tone > sunscreen. I love how I also see more effects from toners than moisturizers so I don't even need moisturizer on most days

I absolutely love the COSRX Pure Fit Cica Toner. It has 7 Cica ingredients that help calm my very sensitive skin, and also helps soothe, moisturize and strengthen my skin barrier. I used to have very dry and sometimes dehydrated skin, and now I don't.. I seem to react to products that have a lot of active ingredients but the COSRX toner has not irritated my skin at all and has hydrated and repaired my skin barrier like nothing else Ive used. Highly recommend!

Just ordered my Haruharu toner! I’ve shied away from toners in the past because the ones I’ve tried were very astringent and drying. Super excited to see what a good moisturizing toner will do for me, especially with the colder months upon us which really dry me out. The antioxidant properties are a huge plus to me as someone who lives in a big city where air pollution is an issue. Thank you James for taking my skin care to the next level. 💙
