I can't live without my korean toners 😂😂 my routine includes cleansing - toner - moisturiser - sunscreen (am). Korean toners aren't astringent and they're focusing more on hydrating, soothing, calming and repairing which is why I love using it. I stopped using essence/serum. I found that layering my Make Prem Safe Me Relief Toner is enough. Korean toners are basically serums in a bigger bottle. The ingredients are almost similar. ALMOST. what you said about toners being better for oily, acne prone skin is so true. I have oily, acne prone skin, and I want to treat my skin barrier issues with ceramides, but I struggle to find a moisturizer with ceramides that won’t clog my pores (cos it’s always creams that contain coconut oil derivatives, which breaks me out, whereas gel/lightweight moisturizer never seem to contain ceramides?) so I use toner with ceramide instead, followed by moisturizing lotion, and it works wonders for my skin! so yes, I only use toners with specific value in mind. and I also love exfoliating toners.

I would love our gorgeous doctor to check out eastern toners that are WAY different from the toners in the west. korean and japanese toners are so well-thought of especially these days where skincare is very much a part of a lot of people's routine. I've used and utilized toners, alongside my entire skincare routine, for my skin's benefit for 3-4 years now I think, and my skin has improved a lot even from the first 3 months of consistent routine with a certain goal in mind. My skin's needs change all the time therefore my skincare routine adapts to address these changes. Some people have to improve their knowledge with toners so it can work for them and not mess their skin. And brands also have to stop using false or misleading information to their advantage.
@danlightened
@danlightened 3 жыл бұрын
So, what exactly do they do? I know there's face wash for cleaning, physical and chemical exfoliators for exfoliating, humectants for hydration, and occlusives to lock in the hydration. What exactly does toners do? Some say it's to rebalance the pH level but she doesn't seem to mention that.
@hirohiwo
@hirohiwo 3 жыл бұрын
@@danlightened my answer will be solely based to infos I've gathered through influencers(the more credible ones), dermatologists, and my own very experience with skincare for 3 or so years. Feel free to correct or invalidate my points in the nicest way possible. Toners are used to fill in your skin's needs that are not present in your other skincare products in the routine or if present, in very minimal amounts. Think of the "missing piece" in your routine. The supplement that will help you fill in the gap. (No you don't need high concentrations of a single ingredient in ANY of your skincare steps unless prescribed by your doctor) For example, you're using a gentle cleanser with basic ingredients and has no any form of exfoliant in it, then adding AHA/BHA/PHA toners in your routine will benefit you, unless you exfoliate in your other steps or use retinoids along the routine. That will be over-exfoliating and will be counter-productive. Another will be if you don't have vit. C in any of your skincare steps. There are toners with vit. C and vit. C derivatives to help you with the lack of vit. C in your routine, tho vit. C's are usually offered and more effective in serums more than toners. All of these, of course, will have to depend on how your skin reacts to certain ingredients/products/ingredient combinations. It will be a series of trial-and-error until you find the ones that works for you, your skin, your routine, and your budget(please don't destroy your skin along the way). Knowing what ingredients do and testing them out little by little before actually proceeding to including them in your CURRENT daily routine will be the safest way to test things out. I hope I'm able to help you even just a little. That would make me happy.

Anyway, you're probably correct. It's what I've read too and heard in her and other KZbin videos. I thought these actives are usually in serums and toners did some other things like tighten the pores, remove residues of other beauty products, rebalance pH as these brands have been claiming historically.

I understand your concern but isn’t a serum the same ? Just a product that might serve multiple purposes. I guess the problem is the name ” toner “, as some people might think it tones your skin and balances the PH . The way I see it, toner is just about the texture of the product

Agree these days serums are more waterlike serums. Great for extra hydration between steps! But I think before toners were ph adjusters after cleansing (because I guess old cleansers weren’t ph balancing) but I think the term nowadays toner is kinda outdated maybe essence works better then? Even though some will say essences and toners are different so I guess it just will show how everyone thinks of skincare differently

I have oily/ acne-prone skin and I tried 6 months without a toner. I found it can work, but I prefer including a toner in my routine for a couple reasons. A lightweight hydrating and calming toner like Klairs Supple Unscented Facial Toner, can help tone down the redness in my skin and I feel I'm less oily throughout the day. Also I enjoy the therapeutic, spa-like experience with including toner and essence in my routine. I don't do a full 10 step routine, but I'm definitely using more than 5 products everyday and I'm happy to go through all the steps while taking my time. Toners are not essential like cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, but they can be beneficial if you find the right one for you or you actually like having a longer routine. If you're a skincare minimalist or you have very sensitive skin, then a toner isn't a must!

Toner is to be used after cleanser only if it’s delivering active ingredient that is not present in other steps of routine. 1) toners don’t have general function 2) don’t use it as double cleanse mechanism 3) toners are not meant to be make up remover Better for oily acne prone skin, to reduce contributing to oil production with thicker creams

Thank you for this explanation. I have very sensitive skin that can't decide if it wants to be dry or oily or scaly or pock-marked with acne. Yesterday was my birthday, and the little free gift I got from Sephora was a toner with marshmallow extract, seaweed something, and BHA/ADA... I think? Some combo of ingredients I'd never seen before. This morning I used if after my shower, and my skin was fine with it and feels amazing... way better than when I used the gentle moisturizers I've experimented with. I decided to not moisturize afterwards, it felt fine. It's nice hearing the last part of your video, that toners are good for people with delicate skin conditions. I'll have to try this and look into it to help with my weird skin.

I actually use rose water from Asian shops as a toner to double cleanse my skin, reduce redness and hydrate. And then I use an essence basically a very light gel. Works for me :).

I am loving the fact you pointed out that toners actually should not have marketing that states they "balance everything." If I use a toner after cleansing...I strip my skin and I break out. They truly need to pass more information branding specifications on to the consumers. So that the consumer can choose whether they need it or not. But of course if they do that, they lose money.

I was definitely a traditional 3 step skincare user. However after doing some thorough research (a million thanks to you Shereene for being the catalyst!) due to developing perioral dermatitis (PD) I decided to change things up. I still use 3 steps but they are now much more skin friendly and I'm starting with basics in order to make sure my skin doesn't flare up with PD. I was thinking about transitioning from a toner to serum at some point. However, I am oily-acne skin type so I may just stick with toners. Eventually I'll introduce a serum to use some include some retinol.

I've been using Monat's Water Essence for 4 months. They market it as a brightening and moisturizing product. Looking at the ingredients, thanks to Dr. Idriss, it has lactic and glycolic acid. I've been using this twice a day along with a glycolic acid serum twice a week. I've been using way too much chemical exfoliants! Gah! Gotta lay off the essence and be more aware of the ingredients in my skincare!

In Korean skincare a toner or hydrating toner is pretty much a watery serum or an essence. In American skincare a toner is more of an astringent usually but its changing and getting confusing because of the influence of k-beauty. Personally I love my Korean hydrating toner aka essences I feel like my skin easily absorbs and I have had benefits apparent on my skin. I know technically you can just tap water but I prefer a hydrating toner/essences with some beneficial ingredients. Note I don't really use serums so it replaces this step for me. For my dry skin this works for me. Thanks for the information! The confusion between essences and toner is real though!!!can you do a video on Essences??

What about the skin pH? Tap water has a pH of 8 but healthy skin only has a pH around 5.5. No matter how low is the pH of your cleanser, you need to wash them away with a lot more water and the pH will increase to 8. If the tap water in your location is rich in calcium and magnesium, then the cleanser scum (calcium and magnesium salt of surfactants) will precipitate on your skin and cause irritation. So the proper pH of a toner is also very necessary. That's my opinion.

It's so refreshing to really learn about skincare on your channel and not watching another "same - all - over - 10 - times- sponsored - by - always- the- same- brands - commercial- product- presentation show". Because that's what I feel meanwhile when I watch so many of other former educational skincare channels. And I thank you for being different🙌🙌

Oh god I would use my salicylic acid toner after a salicylic cleanser... T_T that might've contributed to the breakouts I've been having I guess lol thanks so much ! I do wonder though : since I only wash my face with water in the morning, can I use the SA toner then? Or would it still be too much since I cleanse with SA in the evening? Would be very grateful if anyone had some info :) thanks again !

The comment you made toward the end about the type of skin that benefits from toners is exactly why I struggle to use moisturizer. Even a basic lotion caused me to break out a lot, so I tried using gel moisturizer, but my skin got really oily shortly after, and I find myself trying to thin it out with a lot of water when I apply it (basically accidentally washing half of it off). I started to use a gently cleanser with low amount of salicylic acid, then some witch hazel "toner", and my skin isn't red or oily afterward, and I don't feel like swiping oil off of my face throughout the day. The main "moisturizing" component of my process is sunscreen (and I even use a non-oily sunscreen that feels pretty matte). I can't tell yet if it's helping with acne, but I'm breaking out less currently than when I tried to use stickier moisturizers

I recently started a glycerine and rose water toner because I never apply my products right after I wash my face so I feel like some hydration is needed before moisturizer is applied. It makes my skin feel hydrated and plumper. However, my skin could still survive without it...

Doc, what do u think about Sk2 essence from Japan. It's still very hot more than 10yrs in Asia. Some of people use this products more than 10yrs, they believed that it changed their skin more brightier , soft and anti-aging. What do you think of the Key ingredients "PITERA"?

So... I don't need a aha serum after washing with my salicylic acid? 🤔 I just recently bought a bunch of products to start a skincare routine and I was recommended to get both a bha and a aha, as allegedly they don't work as well without each other. I do have very congested skin and am very prone to black heads (and a couple pimples here and there, but nothing very dramatic). So. Am I over stripping my skin? I haven't felt anything negative yet, but then again, I only started using these products 4 weeks ago.

Can I use a toner b4 vitamin c? will the toner help the vitamin C penatrate to the deeper part of the skin where can it be utilized? I lower my skins ph by cleansing with a 2%salicylic acid but I squeeze fresh lemon juice into it mix well then use as cleanser and to lower the ph so the vitamin C serum is able to penatrate.. I use the brand Dr.Brenner vitamin c serum wich includes vitamin E Ferulic acid and ha too.the formulation is a doopy for the skinsuticals vit c serum.its very acidic its like almost licking a lemon well not that sour but somewhere in that category of sourness .any other cheep vitamin C serums i used in the past has never been sour at all, like if it got on my lips on accident none ever tasted like this one from the Dr.Brenner vit c serum, I have not tried the skincuticals one that has a Paton on the formulation/ingredients . Cause its between $150-$200 depending on where online its ordered from..

I use a toner after cleansing. But, what I use toners for mostly is to calm down my rosacea during the day when I feel flushing or hot face Such toner having some sort of calming ingredient like centella asiatica, oat, green tea, etc. Am I wrong? Is any of that penetrating through? It, at least, gives me a cooling sensation through evaporative cooling if nothing else.

... and then add in cases of things being lost in translation. Afaik in France toners are often called lotion, which is a common word for cream in German. And when shopping for toners in German, they are called "facial water" and are listed in the cleansing category next to micellar water. Or it's just in a completely different category and you have to browse brand pages or search for specific products... it's all very confusing.
