I liked the awesomely beautiful smile at the very end !! I'm 61 years old and am trying to write 'personal statements' and other essays for various law schools. I had, still have, absolutely no clue what to write in a personal statement despite having written six of them already (one for each school, four hybrid/internet programs, two BAM (bricks and mortar) schools that even if I got accepted I probably could not afford to go to). I originally thought maybe I should be trying to take on the midset of a college kid and try to write from that imagined perspective, but that didn't work. Although your vids are geared towards regular college essays, they have given me some important direction that have at least gotten me started on this project. I do some U-tubbing myself, so I can appreciate how hard it is to be good at it, and I really like your presentation style. Thanks again.

I know that colleges are looking for people who are going to "redefine the possible." I think it's really secret code for "change the world." Job postings would often look for "self-starters." People who are self-starters also change the world. I never made it anywhere because I only know what I'm taught. Someone from the University of Illinois invented KZbin. I'd never figure out how to do anything like that, so there wasn't any way that I could be an asset to anyone.

I understand where you're coming from, but why stay on that path instead of venturing out of your 'safety' scope?

@@3rd_anthony I'm not a self-starter. It's kind like when taking a course. Some students seem like they already know everything. They're the self-starters. They're the ones that companies are looking for. I'm the type of person that if the professor sucks or the book sucks, I'm in big trouble.

I wrote a personal statement on Common App question 5 about Jeen' Yuhs, Kanye's documentary and how it inspired me. I thought I was being original. I got rejected by Yale in REA😂 Plus I didn't have SATs or AP classes but I'm top 5% in my class. I'm African btw😊

I typically see success w top 2% -- but even that is not a guarantee-- top 5% at HYSP is pretty rare-- also Yale is not very test optional-- proportionally it accepts far fewer studetns without scores than with and has stated it does not want scores withheld.

Hii Brook, I am Mark from Uganda and I thank you for your videos. Currently am in my senior year and l hope to apply to colleges next year but one. Please wish me luck.

All the best with your endeavours and applications. Have a look at the recent Harvard admissions office video on preparing for Mock Alumni interviews which features a young lady from Zimbabwe. Coming from Uganda it might give you some ideas about what a successful African applicant looks like.

Hey brooke, I applied to Harvard university under REA and got waitlisted, what's my chances of getting accepted later??
@orion5324 Жыл бұрын
Heyo, it’s a different applicant pool each year, so it’s very difficult to tell for sure. Selective universities already have a low acceptance rate, and I’d assume the amount of people they let in off their waitlist will be no different. I wouldn’t be discouraged by it, but I wouldn’t also see this as a tell-tale sign of admission. Hope you get in! 🤞

Was it waitlisted or deferred? They are not the same thing. Wait listed typically comes at the end of the process and almost always means that you were denied admission. And for most highly selective schools, few students get in off the wait list. Treat being wait listed for what it is, a denial of admission, and focus on the other schools on your list.

@@gheller2261it was deffered. To be precise the letter said this "The Committee on Admissions has completed its Early Action meetings. After careful discussion, we were unable to take a definite action on your application and have deferred making a decision at this time."

That’s why essays should either be done away with-because the wealthy kids hire people to write them, or we should be required to write them in a classroom with proctors
