These are the kinds of videos wild animal sanctuaries need to show the public. Thank you for discouraging people from getting wild animals as pets!

Honestly I had no idea if Genet could be actual pets or not, and I wasn't aware of the context behind their situation so that type of video helps. In short, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Good! Loved that "So please stop asking me where to get one, I'm not going to tell you" at the end. Like a mic drop. Sometimes ya just gotta put your foot down and stand your ground. You're doing the right thing... for those people asking, and for those precious little feline-wannabes.

@@tracyjacoby2382 I would love to have so many wild animals as a pet, and if I had the resources to properly provide for a couple RESCUED wild animals... I would do so. Lord I'd love to have a red panda and a kangaroo. But only as rescues. Well, the red panda wouldn't have to be a rescue... they're just too darn cute. But most wild animals... well, apparently, they're happiest in their natural habitat. Or at least that's what people say. But I have a feeling that most land animals that aren't large or live in herds would probably love a nice, comfortable indoor lifestyle (as long as they're treated properly, and well taken care of maintained)... they just aren't aware that it's available for them.

Normie can be the best possible Genet (sp?) and still completely a vanishing handful who can't be left unsupervised with certain of his sanctuarymates. Your devoted consistent work with him really shows in how well adjusted he is, thanks for de-glamorizing exotic pet keeping while giving these delighful critters like Norman a really great sanctuary life. ❤

@@zander7671 I dislike blanket statements like this, as someone who keeps exotic animals that can have their needs readily met in the average educated individual’s household, and are captive bred and have been for multiple generations. I keep dart frogs, I have tree frogs, a snake, isopods, and a fish (which, yes, constitutes as exotic depending on the species). I culture fruit flies, supplement to avoid nutrient deficiencies, have full-on vivariums, an exotic vet that will readily see my animals nearby, an automatic misting system, full spectrum lighting, am constantly measuring heat & humidity, water parameters, etc etc. One of my dart frogs actually ORIGINATES directly from a breeding program ran by a conservation organization, Tesoros de Columbia, which exists to protect Columbian amphibian species and snuff out smuggling wild specimens by providing healthy, legal, captive bred individuals into the hands of people apart of the dart frog hobby. I plan to accommodate him with two other individuals of the same origin once he’s old enough to go into the larger vivarium I constructed for him. This is not a black and white issue. There are animals that absolutely do NOT belong in captivity, and especially not the average civilian’s hands, but there are also plenty of others that ARE ethical to keep which are not domesticated.

@@zander7671 Cool beans. Anyway, does this mean the conservationist organization Tesoros de Columbia is just as horrible as the extremely inhumane smugglers they’re combating from harming the already endangered Columbian amphibian species? What about the fact that the manager of Tesoros de Columbia worked firsthand against smugglers, and saw many disturbing cases of how animals were being illegally transported out of the country in poor health and conditions? Do you not grasp that CAPTIVE BRED animals are vastly different from individuals simply plucked from the wild and smuggled in, and that they protect wild populations from smugglers due to immediately negating any demand to take from them? I just don’t understand, because now this is kind of demonizing conservationists by proxy. :P I didn’t just yoink these creatures from the wilderness lol. They’re pets. They were born in the United States, in human care, just like their parents, their grandparents, and possibly their grandparents’ parents. Their needs can be met. It’s not like having a tiger (which NOBODY beyond conservation organizations and sanctuaries should have access to, along with every other big cat, primate, and honestly most ‘exotic’ mammals in general tbh). There are certain ‘exotic’ animals that can be kept in captivity ethically.

Genets have been kept as pets for thousands of years, the reasons being similar to how cats became domesticated. I know lots of people who have/had genets as pets, with the caveat that genets are part of their environment (Africa) and are a familiar, known quantity. Imagine living in the country and the animal in question is, say, a racoon. The people I know have also had caracals and servals as "pets", as well as cheetahs. A farmer friend of mine has a number of cheetahs on his property, and he is very protective of them, mainly because so many of his neighbours are idiots who will shoot at anything that's not a farm animal. I had a genet many years ago, and she didn't shred me any worse than my cats who liked to play rough. I won't name the place I got her from, but they were notorious exotic animal sellers- thankfully long out of business. My other "rescue" from the place was a fruit bat, who they kept outiside in the hot sun, in a tiny hanging cage, to draw attention to the place. I gave the bat to a woman who rehabilitated birds and had big flight cages. As it turned out she was the perfect person to care for the bat. They were inseparable until they both died of old age. Would I recommend a flying fox as a pet? Never. Would I recomment a genet as a pet? Only if you live in a place like South Africa and they're already living in your back yard.

My Husky is enough to keep me on the edge of my seat most of the day. The only time I don't have to worry about her is when I'm at work. She's a perfect angel when I'm not home. Usually gets her sleep in since she spends all night making me scratch her head while I'm sleeping or falling off the bed because she's a goober who loves to sleep on her back.

Maybe unconventional ones, or obscure, but actually something that could be a pet for a normal(ish) person

Ferrets. They're pretty much as chaotic, but not as dangerous and not wild. Or rats. Rats actually make really good pets. But you need multiple. Guinea pigs, maybe. I think you also need multiple. Maybe with the ferrets too, honestly. They play with each other in ways that you just can't as a human, you know? And do plenty of research. Also, don't trust the information pet stores have. It's typically wrong.
@Heterogeneity
@Heterogeneity Ай бұрын
Ferrets from a reputable breeder if it's legal where you live and if you are really willing to put in the time they need from you. They need a lot more one on one training and interaction than a cat or dog but if they've been bred for captivity they can be very happy as house pets. A pair of rats I also recommend. Rats are more cuddly/mellower/easier to socialize and tolerate more time in a cage much better than ferrets.

These animals should’ve never been made pets to begin with, and that’s how they ended up with you in case people didn’t make the connection. I hate how people still think animals are just toys that look cute to play with. These are other living creatures with minds of their own.
