Hedi Slimane is being considered as the ever youthful, super-skinny silhouette loving, sharp cuts implementing revolutionary designer - but how come nobody liked his Celine collection?
As a biased viewer of his collection (somewhere on my body is the name Phoebe tatooed) i still feel its important to analyse Hedi from a meta perspective, without comparing him to any other designer.
To really differentiate it, we need to be careful to understand the inspiration and the reasoning behind it.
You might not go out here as a Hedi fan - but damn i like this guy.

I was in the boutique yesterday and saw the spring summer 2024 it was 90% branded. All the pants were pull ups so I suppose if you’re a child or a geriatric you should be very excited. I found one belt I bought it in gold calf it was very beautiful from the Triomphe and the black was gorgeous of course as well. There were some good shoes, and there was one bag, the large strap Romy, it is sublime and gorgeous. Oh also there was a really great pair of pink square sunglasses that I really liked. I saw a few knock offs of Chanel square jackets for 5000 apiece but other than that it was pretty dismal so worship away. But I will possibly buy those pink sunglasses and the green Romy, and be on my way until Celine Appoints a new designer.

Celine is basically an open brand. Its open to any kind of designer who's hot, trendy, and will bring in the money. It doesent have an aesthetic, a strong emphasis on heritage and history but it already has a "name" that was made by celine vipiana herself, michael kors, phoebe philo, and now Hedi who is building upon its previous success. Love the content and I hope you drop that Jil Sander content real soon!

I still think Celine has a certain heritage, that has also been worked with by the previous designers. It absolutely changed though in the last 10 years. And now its definetely the hardest to identify. Jil video is live this sunday btw 🙌

I’m pretty sure if you look at Celine revenues it’s doing rather well. People aren’t devastated. A small noisy group of old women were sure. More groups especially men have flocked to the brand who would never have before. It’s working very well actually. To the tune of doubling of revenues at Celine. He is a very talented designer AND visual artist.

they definitely have more turnover now. not only is the Asian market biggest consumer now, but it’s also gen z and logo friendly. And RTW doesn’t make as much money as bags, acc. etc. so yes, sure they are financially more successful now. And Hedi being a talent is out of question. I like that he brang back the old old Celine. But I can’t forgive the logo shirts and sneakers.

Great insight. I've been a Slimane fan since his Dior Homme days and he has an unapologetically specific aesthetic. One of the problems of having such a strong, tightly controlled, vision is that you can get stuck. Personally, Chambord collection was a relief in terms of progression. Also, girrrl your skin

I actually love it when designers create their very own dna and somehow achieve being recognizable - he def did that, which doesnt mean its not clashing with former values of a brand. This is a huge experiment with Celine. Also Thank you 🥰

I never understood the controversy with Hedi Slimane. I get it. But I don't understand it. I've always thought of him as one of the most visionary designers in today's industry. I think the industry needs him for the mere fact that he's someone that takes clothes from the past and shows it as a sort of future to other generations. His pictures are bangers btw so I think we should put that to the table 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel like he changed a lot 20 years ago. His vision for Dior was revolutionary. But the question is, what has changed since? He has a very strong dna and that’s what makes him so special, but he is struggling when it comes to interpretation of other values and designs in combination with his own structured designs. At the end, it’s not his own label, he is working for another design house. But in a Hedi world, Hedi is visionary still.

I think you’ve got a very good point, and helped me understand my own reaction to him taking over celine a bit better. My only “problem” would be: why has he not been given his own label yet? He has such a clear vision and message (as you said), which btw has a secured margin of popularity, just let him make his own brand. And keep Celine more along the lines of Jil Sander, which btw *also* has a secured margin of popularity. His “visual designer” skills work great with a huge brand like Dior or SL (which rely a lot on image), but Celine was another type of brand, as you said.

It's pretty clear he doesn't want his own label. If he did he would be too busy running a business instead of designing the clothing, taking photographs for the campaigns and designing sets for the runway shows.

@@gpoop you’re right, but as Tuba says, it’s not like there is A LOT of design in his clothes. With a competent team he should be able to keep up with everything and indeed focus more on the visual side of his brand, which is clearly his strongest suit

i also feel like he doesnt want to have his own label, as he said in the Interview he had the opportunity to found his own label, but at the end decided in favour of Dior. Personaly i like that there's at least one designer out there that does what Hedi does. "Proper" designs can be boring. I prefer that he focuses on the feeling,tge carelessness, the strong and clear vibe of the clothes. That's how he will always have his "fanbase" because somehow rock also never dies

Ofcourse there is space for everybody. But sometimes you also need to show your skills in terms of implementing own vision and design on sth different. I feel like Hedi‘s vision is so strong that he doesnt like to fit anything in, as he said. But its not fitting in - its an attempt of trying to bond two dna‘s with each other

He focuses on the culture and youth that’s why ppl hate on him because he pushes forward with with what kids want. Where traditional designers are more stubborn and strict. It’s for ppl that are skinny which there’s nothing wrong. The marketing director at Celine is also going forward for the rappers and k pop stars for promo. There’s nothing wrong with Celine hedi slimane is just for the folks that are always young minded. Don’t worry y’all will get phoebe for her strong look soon somewhere else. You also forgot to mention how he changed the luxury shopping experience in terms of retail design and how clothes should be displayed.
@tubaavalon

We know how he changed everything at a certain time and that he is a visionary designer, but his priorities changed, that doesn’t mean it’s bad or anything. It just made a shift. And changing retail design experience is also something very brand identity oriented, again not specifically design focused. Hedis and Pheobes will all still be happy though 🥳

@@tubaavalon his priorities changed because of his new partner behind Celine, he used to work for Maxfield LA and hedi Slimane hired him to work at Celine and does a lot of the marketing. I can't stop thinking about the possibility of Hedi being the creative director of Ann Demeulemeester. Change the name to simply Ann D and just ride with the rockstar-punk aesthetic. I still think that Hedi is forced to make Celine appeal to the young tiktok influencer because of it's owned by LVMH and no other house from LVMH is banal and brave enough to make such polarizing yet risky collection.

Haha this got real dark with old-Celine's target audience dying out. Agree with most of your points - I feel like Heidi is unfairly maligned, he's certainly not the only designer to be completely focused on perfecting a single aesthetic (e.g. Yohji, Ann etc). I suppose a distinction is that he's not tethered to a namesake brand, so his reforging of fashion houses in his image is particularly jarring.
@damalulani

It's not that we don't "get" it, we are just tired of him going from brand to brand erasing what was established only to make it all about him and his obsession, the exact same vision that really hasn't evolved much. And yes it's an attractive image, but he needs to just do it under his own label already, hopping from brand to brand only to do exactly the same thing is simply a waste of resources, and quite frankly there are just too many young talents out there with more dynamic visions who can use the opportunity.

@@nunyabeezwacks1408I think the lack of innovation is what feels disappointing. Heidi never pushes his ideas forward or expands on them in new ways, it’s more or less the same every season. You look at McQueen, Mugler, Wales Bonner, Richard Quinn and they all mix it up each season while staying true to their vision; Heidi could do the same and people would love to see it. the handbags and accessories at celine under hedi slimane are quite boring and lacklustre compared to those released under philo (the logo bags are downright hideous), but i do love that they brought back small details (like the buckles) from vintage 70s and 80s celine. overall i like the 70s influences, especially in certain pieces in the fall 2020 collection, but on the whole it still feels like he's trying to do saint laurent 2.0 and to me the pieces/looks are very hit or miss. the summer 2021 collection is so bland, the clothes are nothing special but i guess that's what they're going for, simple mass appeal... even if hedi's forte is curating an aesthetic rather than design, he still seems very confused about what the celine aesthetic is supposed to be. it feels like they're just throwing stuff at a wall and seeing what sells

So.. to sum up all those 20 min. - you value branding more than actual fashion design? :) H. S. is new age Ralph Lauren for kids :) It is more about life style than actual fashion design or fashion per se. Love his branding, sense of commerce and aesthetics, they are flawless, but clothing is utter bore and looks so cheap, nevertheless I guess people sometime get irritated by him because he reflects the superficiality of our times :) Truth hurts :) Also, it is very strange phenomenon how current kids somehow don't value innovation nor they know the past, i guess its Google/Insta effect; everyone is occupied by perfecting the surface. No past, no future, endless current up-dates. Anyways, great video XOXO

I hope I made clear that I do not share Hedi‘s perspective personally, I just tried to understand his view and priorities when it comes to fashion design. He shares different values than a Phoebe does, its not about sculptural techniques, architechtural visualisation or design to embrace and at the same time blur the lines between masculinity and femininity. But he changed the classical view people had on menswear a long time ago. And that is also important - even if we do not find his designs appealing now. This is all just an explanation, not an excuse for a lack of creativity, which is strongly the case at celine.

@@tubaavalon Sure, thank you so much for the video. You are right, to understand H. S. you need to analyze and go back to his 90s Dior and YSL time. The only thing i would argue is that with his Saint Laurent comeback he stopped being designer and became brand manager on a whole new level. He indeed became new Ralph Lauren for digital age. It is more about world building than actual design. It wouldn't be fair to ask from R. Lauren Galliano level fashion design. Xx

You said it yourself skinny, slender, and in grey/black color range- the color plays into lengthening & taking in. The average woman does not fit in what he's designing for; A skinny white woman. The antithesis of Celine and its ability to create looks for all kinds of woman. Old Celine gave woman the ability to breathe in their clothing, to be fashionable but also comfortable. It was designed to be a woman's brand, Made by woman for woman- In a male dominated industry. The clothing was designed with insight about what woman want and how clothing drapes and fits on their specific body. Everything that Slimane is doing, the sihloutte down to the color pallete- Its so off brand. It's honestly repulsive.

It's sort of his style that the models dont look feminine or masculine but rather a peculiar mix of those. In his interviews he's said that when he was a teen he would do his own clothes because he was so skinny and tall than other boys he couldn't really find clothes. So it's like the models represent him in way

I have to disagree with your points here. There's plenty of skinny people what could wear Celine and designers have the ability to push the aesthic they want. His models look fairly neutral to me and he's designing from a place of himself. The skinnier garments are used to facilitate that punkish look that he's largely known for. Also, I thought the fashion industry was dominated by women. lol. Am I wrong? Most menswear seems to struggle and pale in comparison to womenswear, and mens shows haven't been around for very long. Still, not a fan of him, but I got no issues with him pushing whatever look he wants.

@@nyx3983 agree with your view on his freedom to show what he wants and his essence, he has every right to do so. But I think many womenswear houses are primarily a world dominated by men (we, women, are getting a lot more even on that matter nowadays, that’s a great thing)

Omg for the love of God please stop the zooming in and our every few seconds. 😭 It's so distracting.. Otherwise loved hearing your opinion and for me Hedi is quite overrated.

Thanks to this i have new found perspective of Slimane but nonetheless, i feel like he's failing a bit at attempting to cater to a younger audience. His Celine womens looks like outdated Zara and the mens is just... something. He also didn't release any pictures of the recent mens as a sort of way to show the brand's exclusivity...but like..aren't you supposed to cater to a younger audience? some with no connections to direct buyers?

Design-wise it is critical also imo. But strategy wise i think it was the best decision to hide pictures of the exact looks. Thanks to Instagram, everything lost its worth and exclusivity - which in a manner also made it more approachable and lets say democratic - but to be still valued as a luxury brand, you need to create a distance to your very own customers. E.g. Bottega deleting instagram
