You know I find it quite sad to say what I'm about to say because I really used to be in your core audience and was even in your Patreon supporters in the beginning and loved your approach to fashion. But I think all your latest videos about "personal style" are not actually about personal style but about your own (quite narrow) vision about what constitutes someone's personal style, which might have nothing to do with what a person's personal style might look like. Because I think that you equate personal style with a very individualistic, maximalist, unique way of dressing---which might not be everyone's style, no matter how into fashion they might be. Maybe someone doesn't like to dress in an exuberant way and feels comfortable with their choices which might include Paloma Wool or vintage clothes bought from whatever heavily styled store (which, I would argue, it means that they've found their personal style because they're at peace with what they're wearing) but, according to your advice here, they're just confused and should try harder not to be influenced by these silly brands. In fact, Ojo did a cool short video recently about how a lot of designers dress in a very boring way even though they have all these wonderful ideas in their head. And I don't think anyone would dare say that people like Phoebe Philo or Pieter Mulier don't have a personal style just because most of the time they dress in a boring way. I think you yourself talked at some point about how, when you need to be really creative, you actually feel the need to dress in a "boring" way to direct your energy towards that creative task. And I find that totally relatable, I don't think we need to be all the time at 100% peak outfit craziness in order to feel like ourselves because we are in love with fashion. Sometimes it's good to be chill. I don't think there's anything wrong with having particular views about how you like to dress (this is what actually drew me initially to your content) but I think presenting them as absolute views about something as general as "personal style" alienates some part of your audience (at least me). Because, presented in this way, it comes across as "you're doing this thing wrong" instead of "I find this thing really cool". And it sounds very prescriptive instead of exploratory---which a person that's just learning about style might enjoy, but someone who's already knowledgeable about it might find limiting.

This video is very inspiring. It’s something big already know but probably I need someone to just say it. 😅 and I feel supported with my own choices.

In film and theater they say it's easier to do drama, but making people actually laugh and make a funny movie or play is one of the greatest challenges ever. It takes much more effort, sensitivity and talent. The same goes with fashion imo. Creating true beauty is extremely difficult - yet we get floated with artificial fast beauty every day. Ugly fashion rather seems to me like catering the drama genre as it's the easier road to success and attention.

What do y’all think of the (more recent) John Varvatos? Quality? Seemed cool to me stopping in a London store. Oddly now reminds me of the costlier Bruno Cucinelli, in some ways. I knew one of the designers there about 10-20 years ago… it was “okay” then, but to me overall forgettable. Now its fun (or I am becoming more eccentric and like their “low-key odd” minimalist aesthetic now… perhaps I changed more than Varvatos did). Most formerly respected houses/names seem to decline these days in every way especially quality, durability - though of course nothing Tuba recommends!

Yes… Hermes is nice.. there are always exceptions everywhere, but they’re a pleasant, low key place to browse amazing deceptively “simple” items… Their adding “makeup” surprised me, a lot, seemingly not “on brand.” It is good quality, long-lasting, not meant to “cover” to uplift and “accent.” They’ve long done fragrances which are fantastic, eg the androgynous “Terre.” I don't have a bag from them, am not obsessed with the Birkin or Kelly, and if I ever got a bag i live in cities where one can just walk in and snag a beautiful bag on the spot [just not Birkin or /Kelly, for which one gets on lists and orders specifics, as everyone knows, eg leathers type, specific color, etc]. Like their belts that come in an amazing array of sizes, widths etc… belts can elevate a look/make it personal, change an outfit dramatically, and the scarves act as anything - as belts, as jewelry round the neck, as halter tops in summer all by themselves. (Any good accessories like those will work, but the word operative jere is “good.”) Tuba Avalon, I admire you so much. Stuck in surreality, wishing you the BEST NEW YEAR! Will finish my Patreon stuff asap [its been surreal]…should be easy, of course. A lesson in “just do it, don’t mention ‘intentions’: act!).

this feels like the culmination of my experience on instagram these past years. why am i looking at these people, their style, their clothes. i'm not them, not at all!! i feel much happier browsing the maximalist FRUiTS or tokyo street fashion when i'm searching creative outfits compared to these perfect videos of people in one certain aesthetic. individuality over instagram goals is so true also

I’m glad that you mentioned the coperni shoes! I felt like their newest disney collection humorous quality was really underrated 😁😁 while the swipe bag got too much hype and kinda overshadowed everything else. Coperni duo Sebastian and Arnaud has always got a distinctive take on futurism, which was always diverted from the retro-vibe and I find that to be refreshing. Their design language has been pretty consistent even from their Courreges era (maybe that’s why you kinda see the similarities between the 2 brands)

Sometimes you just need skinny things for silhouette, especially if you want an upside down triangle, which I do very much. Thank you for the reminder to just not care. And if I do care, maybe wear that more often. Timely! As I felt bad all day for my weird not quite successful attempt at a different silhouette. I can now say at least I didn't blend in.

I’ve really shared the same respect for Hermes, especially after reading How Luxury Lost Its Lustre, however this respect dissipated a bit when I discovered that allegedly Hermes artisans earn under 2k euros monthly, which is frankly outrageous, considering that their brand positioning is heavily reliant on the craftsmanship aspect

Salaries vary a lot between different countries and parts of the world. I'm in Sweden but have worked in Italy, and the salaries in Italy are generally MUCH lower. I assume (hope!) that the workers would go on strike or something if they aren't paid fairly, this is France after all… 🙃

If you choose to invest your money instead of buying all these things, then you won’t be in poverty when you get older. Getting older happens faster than it seems. It almost always puts people, especially women, in poverty. Getting sick puts Americans in bankruptcy. Instead of buying luxury superficial trinkets, it might be wiser to prepare for your own security in life.
