Boy, this video hit home with me. I'm guilty of wishing that I had a full day to just sit down and draw... but this helps remind me that it's not so much the quantity of time as much as what I do with the time I have available to me. Thanks again, Teach!

Yeah that’s so common right?? I bet if you added up every 30 minutes of boredom throughout the week, it’s add up to a pretty decent amount of time right? And then working with purpose on top of that huh??

@@TheArtMentor it does. Couple weeks ago, I made it a point to set aside one hour a day to focus on an art task, cutting out one or two other minor things that just take up my daily time - and that alone has done wonders for me!

It’s tough right! Sometimes just finding those friction points and eliminating them can help, have you tried that? Like getting all your materials set up beforehand so you can’t make the excuse for that. I’m making more videos about that topic

Great video Mr. Sean! It’s interesting because at least, all of these problems can come from different angles, but actually one of the biggest (very related with the self-care topic) can be a result of a constantly stressed state, which means that even motivation can be affected by doing what oneself likes to work with if they do it excessively and don’t treat their burnout symptoms asap, like it creates a fear in them after and is understandable. Who would have thought even self-care is a common responsibility as prioritary as other ones, like… taxes xD

Great advice! One thing that I found that helps me is becoming a part of a community that encourages each other to draw every day. It's like how it's easier to keep to an exercise routine with a buddy. It doesn't need to be a perfect drawing, but I've used it to improve my landscape and scenery skills. Now, I have people saying that I should consider illustrating a book at some point. Really boosts my motivation. :3

Sean, have you ever done a video on using art to deal with emotional trauma? There's a lot weighing on my soul. The emotional and mental pain is so great to almost be physically debilitating. How can I use my art to fix this, rather than "waiting until I feel better" to make art?
@TheArtMentor

Wow that sounds like a heavy topic. I’d consider that. Im sorry to hear about those circumstances, and my advice to you would be to work for your desired future. Remember that nothing will change until you do and that’s worth fighting for that future you want, right? 😁

@@TheArtMentor True, but what happens when you're in a place where you're struggling with doing the best thing for you, because you feel unworthy? That's where I am. Actually, lower than that: Due to recent discoveries, I've realized I was, legitimately, unloved in the last 30 years. I have no way to reconcile this with the people who caused it, as they are either passed on, or far beyond my reach. I've wanted several times to express this pain through my artwork, but instead I have spent days crying, writing in a journal, or doing activities that numb my emotions.
@TheArtMentor
@TheArtMentor Жыл бұрын
How about discovering why you’re worthy then? How about taking that important journey to realize a new version of yourself that is powerful and you love? Start with the self. Build you first. You can’t do anything about the past nor redo it like a game right? Focus on building the future and a future you that’s awesome! How about that? 😁

I'm so sorry to hear that and I empathize greatly. I'm no therapist so take this with a grain of salt but I can tell you what helped me. There is this belief that when something is weighting on you, to put that energy into an object (like a piece of paper listing your grivances) and burn it or release it. In the past I used to draw my pain, however, for me, it was retraumatizing (depictions of harm, fear, etc). What I do now is release and burn things in my personal pieces. I started with traditional art, because I can put pressure, scratch it, etc. (Oil pastels worked amazingly for this), the pieces were chaotic, low effort, took me 5 seconds and then I would tear them apart. With time, each piece became less chaotic, more thoughtful and intentional. Now, when I want to create a healing piece, I tend to create calm, quiet, pieces of art, usually with something being released, flying or escaping, like birds or fireflies. They are personal, so it doesn't matter how good they are, just like medicine is not required to taste good, this type of art is not required to be your best work. I now often paint digitally, but I still prefer to make them with traditional mediums (there is something soothing in letting paint flow). Hope it helps, hope you understood (english not being my first language) and hope you find a good support system that allows you to heal and find peace. Feel free to comment if it helps, I'm sending my best wishes your way

Hey, I am a 3D guy. I generally do the texture baking when I am brain dead, I hate to do it in general so I kind of just let youtube play random videos whilst my body does all the work and I kind of drift in and out of consciousness. I generally kind of wake up in one moment and the work is done. Then I go ride a bike for 2 hours, that is enough activity for me daily so I feel good and can sit for 10-12 hours working. Also, one day a week is a cheat day when I do not make anything. I found this the be the ideal formula so I do not burn out. Also fruit and water, lots of water ;)

@@TheArtMentor Well, I generally overdo things because I am kind of a perfectionist so once I actually limited the amount of time I have to do a project it started to improve and I get less burnouts. I still abandon a lot of projects but a good portion of them are basically test for a new mechanic or a technique I have learned. So it helps me improve a lot faster (since I plan on learning the whole pipeline and make a whole game) and wastes less time. I have also over time learned how to turn off my brain to thinking about work so I can rest much faster as well XD
