My sister told me when I am ready to deliver my baby "DON'T PUSH, baby will come out on their own when she/he ready". Her first 2 baby the doctor told her to push. The 3rd baby, different doctor told her "DON'T PUSH" but focus on her breathing and baby will come out on his own. My sister did exactly that, she said it was the best birth ever, it was quick birth and easy birth.

I pushed until she started crowning. then my midwife told me to breath and not push. she came out on her own in her own time. it was beautiful. and because I relaxed and breathed she came out slowly and I didn't tear. ♡ so really lovely birth, and easy recovery. Thank you so much for All your advice, I've learned so much from you! ♡♡♡

My pushing experience at my first birth was a nurse on each side of me yelling at me to push harder harder HARDER. Never for a second did I believe that was normal. I tore and they were shocked how fast my daughter came out.. This time I put on my birth plan for a nurse to tell me when contractions begin and end and otherwise let me do my own thing. This video is really making me feel like I made the right choice. We'll find out on two weeks!

Ok so I had my son. I was able to do mostly breathing down, I added a little harder pushing when I needed it (9.5lb baby so I needed a little boost at the crowning) NY son came out with a vastly better Apgar score than my daughter did and I think it had something to do with not forcefully crushing him out of me as fast as possible. It was only about an extra 15 min of pushing but so much gentler

I had never heard of "down breathing" or know anything about hypnobirthing, and apparently I did this in labor with my second baby! It helped so much with managing my discomfort, remembering how with my first baby, i tended to push in between contractions and when I had a surge, I tensed and drew up. So cool to know this is really a thing!

Just thought I'd leave a comment to say thank you. I watched all of your videos before giving birth to my son two weeks ago. Thank you so much for your informative videos! I found your original video on Up Breathing coming up to the birth of my son in Dec 2016 and practised the technique. I got my husband to count for me throughout my entire labour and was able to have natural, medication -free, birth (although not quite pain-free lol). It really kept me focused and stopped me hyperventilating which I think was a major problem for me in labour with my firstborn. I can't believe how quickly he came out down breathing (5 mins vs 1.5hrs of pushing with my firstborn). Thank you so much again.

I had an unmedicated birth, I was in a good bit of pain during the "pushing/descent" phase and was soo eager to push. All of the pressure from her head gave me the sensation that I should push and I felt relief with each push, it was almost involuntary pushing. When baby girl was about to be born the midwife told me to try to not push so she can help stretch things slowly down there and minimize tearing but i had such a hard time following orders lol my body had it's own plans. Ended up with 1 stitch but had no pain down there during my recovery!

Same here, it was an urge similar to the one pooping, without sticking your eyeballs out. I just gave them a heads up that I really needed to push and I did, but without an artificial effort, although I did tear, even with an episiotomy. I just failed to remember in the midst of it all to breathe slowly during the expulsion, but they did do a great job with the stitching.

I am feeling uncertain about one thing. As far as I've understood, hypnobirthing involves listening to your body, helping it do its thing and breathe accordingly. From experiences I have heard, and also of Siobhan story on the website, during birth, it comes to a stage where you really feel like you have to push, so basically your body tells you to push. So wouldn't "not pushing" mean not listening to our instinct and not do what our body tells us to do? Hope I can get some clarification on that :)
@steffidoc3 жыл бұрын
I have already given birth once without hypnobirthing. I felt a downwards movement in my body and the midwife told me to really push then. However pushing felt so painful and my intuition told me not to push, because it was just unbearable. I ended up just listening to the instructions of the midwife, because I didn’t know any better and it was extremely painful and exhausting throughout. But downbreathing sounds like a much better option, that I will try, when I give birth to my next baby.
@steffidoc3 жыл бұрын
Update: So I gave birth to my second baby a month ago and used hypnobirthing with Siobhans breathing techniques. Hypnobirthing helped me tremendously during the opening phase. I was still in some pain while my cervix was opening up, but it was much more bearable and it went quite fast. During the bearing-down phase I tried to “blow out candles” like in the breathing technique that Siobhan teaches. My midwife thought, I was trying to hold the baby back and just avoiding the pain and she told me “It’s going to come out very soon but you’re gonna have to push.” I ended up doing that, because I was in a lot of pain and at some point I just wanted the pain to end - but that phase also went by relatively fast and the midwife said afterwards that it was good that I had been so careful (which was her impression). I had very little tearing, although my baby was really big, because I didn’t push super hard all the time. I listened to my body and only pushed, when I felt I couldn’t do it any other way. Also after this birth, the pain was quickly forgotten.

Is there a reason why your technique of down breathing has a much faster out breath than others? I personally prefer it to be faster because I feel like I'm running out of oxygen when i breath out so slowly and is not relaxing at all, but am just curious to know if it matters if it's fast or slow?
@exitpursued66904 жыл бұрын
I'm not a birth coach, but I also struggled with slowing my out-breathing for the "in-breathing" style. (I've practiced this in a few different yoga/meditation styles.) I've found the best thing is not necessarily to focus so much on the count, but focus instead on fully expelling the air from your lungs. Focus on fully drawing in your diaphragm, which should enable you to fully empty your lungs before drawing a new breath. Most of the time, we don't fully empty our lungs on the exhale, and this limits how much new air we can take on the inhale! I'm pretty sure this strategy will work to help you get deeper breaths, and also lengthen the out-breath count.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I actually can’t get poo out by pushing really hard anymore (third trimester). I have to breathe it out. So to confirm this, as a side note, pooping your pants in death is a thing. It’s the final vowel movement because your muscles RELAX. So no, you don’t need your muscles to actively push, your body will do it on its own.

I talked to my doctor yesterday about breathing the baby out, he basically said I could do whatever I wanted but breathing the baby out takes so much longer than pushing. Also the baby could be in trauma/distress hitting the pubic bone over and over instead of pushing and helping him out. I was a little discouraged leaving because I really want to breath the baby out. Hi. I've just bought an aniball to help get me ready for birth next month. The instructions seem to be counter to what is suggested in hypnobirthing. The aniball exercise instructs you to relax your PC muscles on the out breath, thereby allowing the ball to move to the opening, then on the in breath hold the ball where it is. Repeat this until the ball is completely expelled. This method of breathing is also similar to pelvic floor exercises. I'm also reading the Make Your Birth Better book and have been practising breathing using the suggested methods from the book but now I'm getting confused because it seems different to pelvic floor and aniball methods. Do you practice this same method yourself that you have just been explaining to us about giving birth whenever you need to poo? I would be interested to know. In one of your other videos you explained that giving birth was just like going to the toilet and doing a massive poo. I would never have thought that it would be possible to poo without having to push to evacuate the poo from your bowels. If it's possible then maybe I could try practicing this technique whenever I need to poo.

I discover "BRIDGET TAYLOR" KZbin channel, she taught 3 different breathing techniques during labor and one of those breathing techniques is for when you ready to deliver baby. This technique she said practice when you go to poop. I have been practicing and it works. You don't need to force yourself or to push to poop. Just breath in and out slowly and the poop come out.

Do we need down breathing at the time of contraction when crowning happens
@vtbhoward6 жыл бұрын
I like the explanation of upward and downward contractions, etc. I am just wondering why the use of "hypno" to describe the strategy explained in this video? It seems to be a conscious method of managing the pushing stage with breathing and knowledge, similarly to having a BM. "Hypno" seems to imply external manipulation into a half conscious or subconscious state. Being able to breathe well through transition and the pushing stage seems to require being fully aware or close to. Quite naturally, when things require high management our bodies attempt to switch gears, and our minds think about and visualize what is needed or happening. Seems that a person would need awareness and knowledge during that time, not induced trances or half consciousness. JMO....

It refers more to being in a very relaxed state, which helps the birthing process. And being very intuned to your body and baby.
@sarahdickens97384 жыл бұрын
Most Hypnobirthing teachers agree that the name of this approach is problematic and unhelpful. Unfortunately that's just what it's called! The "hypno" of Hypnobirthing refers to the fact that this approach involves harnessing the power of one's own mind to support the process of giving birth. It includes various relaxation and visualisation techniques, for example. Hope this helps.

I found during my first natural birth my whole body was tense for hours, like I couldn’t relax. I did pop blood vessels in my face, neck, and chest as well without screaming. What is the difference between typical breathing methods and this?
@Cantetinza173 жыл бұрын
My birth Center is teaching this. It's funny that you said that the toilet is a good place to try it because my cousin had 2 out of 3 kids on the toilet. My question is that if you aren't really supposed to push then why do Doctor's say "PUSH, PUSH HARD! GET MAD AND PUSH"!!!
@steffidoc3 жыл бұрын
I think, doctors just don’t know much about hypnobirthing. It’s not taught at universities. Are you from the US? Here in Germany the doctors usually don’t give you any advice at all during labor. They just remotely monitor the babies heart rate and only act when there are complications. During my first sons birth the midwife gave me all the instructions and the doctor was only present for the last 15 minutes of labor. However my midwife also was for pushing. It‘s just the oldfashioned, better known method, but certainly not the best one. Giving birth by pushing was extremely painful and exhausting.
@meliamedaverman35583 жыл бұрын
@@steffidoc yes, my sister told me her first two babies the doctor told her to push. She said it was more painful and tiring. But her 3rd baby, different doctor told her "DON'T PUSH" but rather focus on her breathing and baby will come out on his own. She did just that and she said it was the best birth ever. It was quicker and she wasn't tired or in much pain.

I thought deep breathing is a no-no when the baby is coming out because it can move the baby faster and make you tear... very confused. Then when do we use shallow breathing in labor?
@steffidoc3 жыл бұрын
I think shallow breathing is in the short phase, when you’re almost completely dilated, but not quite ready to get the baby out. The midwife will probably notice that phase and tell you wait a little, before downbreathing (or pushing for those who don’t use hypnobirthing).

What if i get really dizzy by breathing like that? :(

I got dizzy at first too, but practicing each day solved that. Also practicing made the process (birth) SO much easier than the birth I didn’t practice with because I had thought, “I already know how to do this from previous birth.”

Can u please tell me if I could practise the up breathing and down breathing when in 6th month of pregnancy until giving birth to baby... just like for practise purpose?? If yes, how many times to practise a practise and for how long should I do it?? Also how will I know up stage and down stage of labour ?? Is it like until the water breaks it’s up stage and once it’s broken it’s down stage??

The more practice the better 😊 I’m 6 months pregnant too!
@sittingonarose6 жыл бұрын
The up breathing is for active labor which will be the majority of your labor. The down breathing is for the pushing phase. You will know when it is time to push because you will feel you’re body start to push and move the baby down. You care provider will also likely check you to make sure you are fully dialted.

These comments are so hippy dippy and not really encouraging for folks who want to use drugs and be in a hospital. Is this hypnobirthing even for me if I want to be medicated and in a hospital in case something goes wrong? Can these techniques be used jointly with an epidural? I mean, no one gets a medal for not using drugs nor does it mean they are going to be a better mum because it's all 'natural'.
@sabrinaraymah47083 жыл бұрын
I think she is just saying that you don’t need to push with your head because you will end up with popped blood vessels in your face and possible tearing from pushing hard nether to breath down and let your body do they job - not saying don’t take any medicine if you want to. I do wonder though can you still have epidural and do the down breathing technique?
