Skinning doesn't really work until we can import images to skin any element. Gameplay elements are much more important than UI or HUD elements, since this is what most players care about. One example is Shigetora, who has iterated many times on his hitcircles and slider colors. The file folder system worked because I could have it open along with image editors, switching between them easily. I could iterate on designs while keeping old versions with alternate filenames (a common practice). When it came time to test skins, osu would load up my skin quickly and I would play through without having to navigate tons of menus. I fear that lazer's ingame skin editor won't make file folders obsolete, just more convoluted to import & switch elements. as a skinner, I got used to the naming process and the subtleties of: - color interactions between slider borders & bodies - transparency's effect on hitcircles' legibility & hit animation - size & transparency interactions in cursor trails (and cursor elements) Lazer's new hit animations, as well as a thousand minor changes, will force me to relearn this. Thats fine, just something to consider. Feature request for lazer skinning is as follows: - resizing & rotating any element (slider body, slider border, hitcircles, cursor trails, inputoverlay) - toggling slider end circles, long cursor trails - transparency sliders for every element (especially sliderbody) - individual animation speed adjustment with a text input (not a global control) - customization of hit animations (speed, growing amount, transparency falloff curve). This includes reversearrows. - allow users to sort skins by file name instead of skin.ini name (I ignored skin.ini names and now I can't find anything) - allow toggle switches for individual attributes previously tied to skin version. Hitcircle number hit animations, reversearrow animations. etc. - possibly support for old behavior of slidercircles in hidden? You know, where they had hit animations for sliderstartcircle and sliderendcircle simultaneously? This one's really optional.

I am no skinner but I do like modifying the skins I use, mainly bringing hitcircles from one skin to another. I can’t do that in lazer. I would love for it to be some sort of feature or way besides exporting, editing in the folder and importing it back (using your post cause it’s the main skinning post here, hope peppy sees it)

One way to solve the file folder problem is for lazer to have a personal collection of every element from your skins. If you import a new element, the old one would be replaced in the skin, but it would still exist in that element collection for you to re-use. This would be an ambitious change but I hope they end up going in that direction. Having old versions of elements with altered file names in the folder is another hacky workaround that ideally wouldn't be necessary. If you forget to remove them all after you're done, the folder is littered with renamed elements which causes confusion for people who don't have all the element names memorized, and also wastes storage space. I don't think letting people sort skins by folder name is a good idea, since that would split the community in two camps, one side using skin.ini names and one using folder names. This would result in a lot of confusion. Ideally there would just be one name. Though it would be useful to have a utility that automatically takes your folder names and writes them to the skin.ini names, maybe as an option on skin import.

As someone who's made skins, I can agree with a lot of this. I just feel like skinning in Lazer is so early on that it's not worth even trying though. I would love to see that change as the less time I spend in Stable, the happier I'll be.

I still use the standard editor for the reasons mentioned here and the ideas here are good, I just hope you keep expanding on them. The right click for the anchors and other settings for instance should all be hotkeys (i.e. ctrl+m1 adds anchor, alt+m1 could add perfect curve anchor). I also really hope there is map data you can toggle like the yellow distance snap text could also include data on the angle of a slider so instead methodically crafting a simple 10° angled slider by placing it and rotating it, I can reference the numbers in the top right after placing the first anchor to just make it 10° by looking there after positioning the 2nd anchor. A lot of data could go there that you could ask plenty of mappers about, we're pretty tired of using sliders as rulers for other notes (maybe you could also just add measuring tools that aren't notes that we flip around lol).

I was hype for Lazer when it was a new thing. One of my favorite features ever is the OG scoring in ANY mode. so I can just have omega points in Mania, or Taiko. I personally like the new UI especially with the skinning options we get with like, the max acc or UR, etc. Having osu direct in it too is nice. Custom modes...it's basically the best version of osu, and can be even better with some small tweaks.

2 things that came to my mind during the video. First I got reaally into osu because it was the only rhythm game where I could find quite literally anything. Any song and I could import my owns and at the time no other rhythm games did that other than Audiosurf which is a vastly different game and sometimes that didn't even make maps enjoyable because the fast parts were just flat and dull for example. Second is a lot of players would migrate to osu when they can keep their pp from stable. A lot of people invested a lot of time into their ranks and they don't want to start over. I think this is a huge reason why people don't play lazer.

Always loved peppy, but I have to say my main gripe over the years was and still remains: mapping. I made a couple rankable maps/sets in my time as a mapper, none ranked. Why? - Sent to BN's only to be hit with "don't like the genre" or "not interested"? I'm happy that standards went up a LITTLE, but it also seems like the only way to get a map ranked nowadays is to become butt buddies with BN's. I get they're unpaid and do it as volunteer work. But it's so annoying to put 30+ hours into a say 5 minute or so song, just for it to be ignored because "I don't like the genre" or "can't be assed to look at it". I've given up on passion projects because a map got ranked too. The way I saw it over the years is that mapping a song with existing ranked sets/maps lowers your chance of even being looked at. I guess I'd like the bn's to be told "let more maps through as long as they don't break the rules". The way I see it, if a map adheres to every rule and follows the guidelines pretty closely, it should be ranked pretty much asap? Why not? People try and make arguments for "bad maps would be ranked too often" - 1. Who cares? 2. Even then mappers like Hailie have been getting maps ranked fast for years purely by being friends with the osu bn's and the like. Note: None of that directs to peppy, I actually love the direction the game seems it'll take, things I hate in current osu have been polished or removed in lazer, e.g. note lock. Some changes I'd like to see, although I'm not yet aware if they already exist: PP being based solely on accuracy. Score is currently more dependent on combo, 70% combo, 30% acc I believe. This is fine, however, 1 missing a score shouldn't mean 0 pp "because you didn't combo". I basically want osu to truly stay more in line with the other modes and make misses only subtract from pp by way of accuracy drop. "People wouldn't fix their scores" > 1. they would it's more pp? 2. This would make people care far more about rhythm than "I have an fc I'd rather overstream the end stream and hit it than maybe miss a note or 2 and tank pp". 3. If they left the score as is that's their choice. I recently set my first 300, yet I have choked 300 on 5+ minute maps with a 1 miss like 5 times, I would just love if your play was worth what you did, and not what you didn't do. Think of it like getting 99% on an exam, that's amazing right? But the 1 question you got wrong is that 1%. Current pp logic is "you got that question wrong half way through and broke your streak? You don't get an A (on the exam). Anyhow, was a fun watch. Always nice to hear from peppy, just my input above.

5:00 Personally, as someone who got into osu about a year ago and started/exclusively plays lazer, i found the new user experience to be good enough to get me off the ground. imo, all the user needs to know is what the circles do and where to find more circles, and the tutorial beatmap and intuitive ui does that well.

After using lazer for a long time I realized that the main thing that made it feel off was the snaking in/out of sliders, turn it of and it feels so much more like stable.

i feel like the biggest reason why i'm not mainly playing lazer is because my PC is not good enough to have good fps on lazer even whith ui hidden while stable does regardless

Still sadge that I can't use multiple sorts yet in lazer. Once that's in I'll be playing mania on there more. ( You kind of HAVE to sort by keycount and difficulty to get what you want)

this video made me try out lazer for the first time, I enjoyed it so much that I uninstalled classic, the default skin is a bit hard to read at times, idk if it's the follow lines or what, but overall I'm enjoying it much more

I moved to lazer for over a year now and it is pretty good. The community is super small so almost everyone know each other and it fun to make friend and play multi there. Gameplay wise high ar feel a lot faster to me i have like 10% acc higher on stable compared lazer map when i use dt mod other than that is pretty much the same and even better in some area like notelock. Now i cant enjoy stream map anymore on stable because notelock make a huge different on stream map. The only time i go back to standard is to farm pp other than that i will alway play on lazer

I started making my own maps in stable in 2018 when I first started playing. Nothing ranked or anything, just for songs I like. I gotta say, I really prefer the new editor. Its alot easier for noobs like me. That being said I've spent probably more time skinning than playing. Theres so much janky hanks when it comes to skinning in stable, and it seems lazer is fixing that stuff. I love the idea of making skinning more modular and customisable. No more janky using the health bar background to skin the play area, or having to use the same health bar in mania.

maybe make a check box called legacy mode so the creators that want to use their old controls still can. But i think its a good idea to enforce change even if ppl are adaptable to it because if the new way is better than they will be thankful when they learn it.

I've been with the game for more than a decade, but only as a really casual player, dropping in and out whenever I feel the want to hit some circles to the beat. And even now lazer feels like a definitive version of the game (and in the good way, not like some other unfortunate "definitive" products of recent years), there was definitely a lot of development and a lot of hard work put into this client since its first "public" version in 2017. Its shaped out to be something much better than I would ever imagine original client could be. Some of the original systems in the game had to be broken and reshapen from the ground up to make the game genuinely better

Something i hope Lazer does different from standard is the option to sensor all the softcore porn, not only because it's anoying to look at but because it's one of the main points why new players struggle getting into this "hentai" game.
