I've had the Cranborne Carnegy 500 EQs for a year now which have the same harmonic saturation and I sold my SSL UV EQ for them. In comparison, the SSL just boosted a single frequency but took away in other places while the Cranborne lift the desired frequency and keep the rest sounding great. If you already have a 500 lunchbox, get the Carnaby 500s - you can also stereo-link them and 2 of them will cost you half as much as the HE2, only without the USB DAW integration.

I got a rookie question: How does physical gear go on software stuff? As I understand you route the track signal out to the gear and run it back. But how do you make it stay on the track? As you mentioned it, while putting it on the guitars, youre missing it from the snares. So does that mean you have to track with that? Or if you have already tracked, you need to rerecord it with it on? If that's the case, how do you make further adjustments?

You cant steal a plugin unless theres a limited number of liscences publicly available. Its copyright violation, not theft. Theyrere a not losing a sale. If anything piracy is good bc that person had no intentions of buying, but may end up recommending it to someone who will or if they enjoy the product and can afford it, eventually buy a proper liscence. @lithominium9955 oh you're still on Zildjian? I left, went to Meinl then Sabian and I'm thinking about Paiste next 🤣 my verdict so far is that Sabian has a greater top end in brilliant tones. Especially in the HHX and AAX lines. All Meinl's are slightly trashy and even dark when they shouldn't be. Someone pointed out to me that all Meinl sound like shopping carts being slammed into each other. That ruined it forever for me. Zildjian A customs are very classic and safe sounding. I've always been under the assumption that getting a good top end is hard and something you can't EQ your way into. That's why I seek out so much brilliance in cymbals for recording.

I see the attraction to plug-ins being able to control hardware. Problem is, eventually, the makers of the hardware/software give up making updates to the plug-in software, and it can't be installed on more modern systems. I discovered this with my Lexicon MX200, which has a USB interface for DAW control. Luckily, the Lexicon's USB connection comes up as an external MIDI interface, and I can control the Lexicon via MIDI commands in my DAW. Not pretty or ideal, but a workaround.

We architected the HE2 plugin control to be maintained indefinitely (as long as we last as a company... So buy our stuff!). Hey Glenn, I recently asked on one of your mix review stream about using a boss pedal as a stopgap reamp box because of its buffer. You said it wouldn’t work. I’d love to know why not? I’d like to make a test and compares the two methods - obviously using an actual reamp box would be better but I currently can’t afford the real deal and I’m trying to explore ways around it for the the time being. As I understand it, the buffer in the pedal acts in the same way as a reamp box by boosting a line level signal up to something more like what the amp is expecting. Cheers mate, love the channel :)

Even buying affordable gear, when you add it all up, just the guitar and recording stuff gets real expensive. It's taken me years to buy all my gear, from Helix's, other pedals etc, and cabinets and multiple decent guitars and basses and good computers and interfaces and monitors etc... Just maintaining the damn guitars is an expense. I've got 8 all up including basses, and I use them all. Some are SSS, HH, in different tunings, baritone etc. Then I gotta pay for setups for all of them, at least once a year and just that is a significant expense when it's 8 guitars, about $1000 Australian bucks a year on maintenance alone for me. I only work part time so I actually have real time for music. When I worked full time, I was just so drained nothing really got done besides me noodling. So I live poorer to have the time to be a musician and develop my skills and songwriting. Most musicians will just never have the money to spend on all the analog recording gear on top of what we have to spend on our playing gear. That's why we get into bands, all chip in, and pay someone like you record us. It's that, or all digital and all pirated lol.

@cranborneaudio
@cranborneaudio Күн бұрын
This is something we know a lot about and have looked at intensively. Of course we are likely heavily biased, but the science/physics checks out. In short - digital "saturation" does not occur as a native function in DSP. Saturation in an analogue circuit is the result of components being pushed beyond their max signal level, and thusly "saturating" due to clipping behaviour and the materials of the components being pushed beyond their limits. Not all analogue circuits will have pleasing "saturation", but the revered kit does. And it's an impossible number of variables and interactions that creates this. When DSP attempts to do "analogue saturation" this cannot be done as a DSP function. Instead, DSP is written to emulate the frequency response and THD of an analogue circuit as measured and modeled with a particular input signal at a particular level. Some digital saturation may come close to analogue saturation depending on the care and attention to how this is done, but it is a recreation of a physical phenomenon under certain conditions and a copy of a particular sound effectively.

I recently watched a videos of Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath) where he stated he had started using Saturn (the multiband *saturation* plugin) to do a lot of his EQing, instead of Pro-Q. Another thing to try is; if your mix needs some more high-mids or treble, instead of boosting those frequencies with an EQ, try adding saturation, thus producing additional frequency content to fill in the mix. An interesting approach, for sure, and achieves a similar "dirty EQ" sound that a boosted analog EQ might do.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been thinking about buying some outboard gear. Mostly just to play around with and not sure where to start. I’ve been watching your old vids on this subject and they really help. Hope to buy my first piece of gear after the 1st. Thanks for all the great content!

Oh how I want to be able to run some analogue gear in my studio. But the big question is, how the fuck do I wire it up? I'm using a Presonus StudioLive 32SC mixer as my interface and I have a Glenn recommended ART Pro VLA II stereo compressor. I'd love to run it on my main master buss but I can't seem to find the right way to hook it up through my Cubase 13 Pro DAW. PHUQUE!

No idea why adat protocol isn't more common. It's idiot proof(usually) and isn't crazy expensive. Cranbourne adat 500 box is absolutely mind blowing. Tracking. Summing. Everything in one. Was a breakthrough unit as far as I can see. Love cranbourne stuff. Even their pres and eqs are awesome. Also those fredenstien pres for $100 are absolutely amazing. I love how good hardware is now affordable. That Klark teknik 1176 is also stupidly good for $150 Anyone who has issues getting a good sound don't blame gear. Not anymore

"erm the whole point was so that i could control it through the computer☝🤓" like dude how did it take you an HOUR AND A HALF to find ONE OPTION in the MIDDLE of the screen? massive, mammoth L. i wouldn't have left that in if i were you. drums are still too loud btw

One more video on recording gear and I'll need another studio rack mount,? mounter?, thing that holds the racks. Yes, I'm a guitar player🙄. Since watching your videos and recording drums and bass, I've cut my gain on the guitars way back. And it does sound much better! Thanks so very much Glenn and SMG videos.

New Metal old , warm round sound , sounds fresh crisp but warm . If you ( Not you Glen )were alive when we had just 8 tracks and had to mix from 4" tape down to 2" , You get it . But show me a computer screen I'm lost. 🤣🤣I encountered my first New to me not seen a desk in 20+ years, desk a month ago to do gig for an American punk band called The Attack. I looked at the desk and was more than a little puckering up lol. So went back to basic's top, mid, bass and road the faders live. Was told best sound this side of the pond so far . My lesson being know your basic's the rest is either a bonus or a shiny thing . As good as modern tec So much of it is just polishing a turd , you still just have a turd. I'm not a luddite but loading, pirate soft where , monthly payments has it helped push us forward or stifled innovation.

Glenn, you need more space behind your racks to pull cables so your solution is to build a bigger studio? AND YOU THINK DRUMMERS ARE STUPID?!?!

Glenn needs a bigger place to deal with his rack... tehehehehe lolz jk jk love ya Glenn, thanks for showing us peasants a thing or two. would like to see a vid on how to set up a multi-effects preset for live and studio where you don't sound like crap on bass and guitar, say maybe with the Hotone ampero stomp/stage 2, or the Headrush Prime?

Did Native Instruments make this? My A49 Midi controller literally does this all the time and I fucking hate it. It won’t connect in logic so all the features get disabled. You can play but you can’t hit import things like…record and stop lol

1799? I thought it would be in the 3k range. Much more affordable as it would only cost me not going on holidays the coming year

13:51 "Oh hell yeah!" Is it my biased ears because this track sounds so bad ass? Who is that again? Or does that sound like it has a pillow-like feel to it? Does this EQ deliver the goods, floating in on a feather? Or am I leaning into it to much? Is this what you're hearing Glenn? It tugs at me. It invites me in without pushing.

One of the most affordable ways to give analog vibes to my mixes was using a trick that Colt Capperrune uses. I bought an Art 2 channel tube preamp with a Warm audio bus comp, and run my final mix through it, and that helped me a lot without spending tons of money.

Hey brother would be great to see how you break out your mix on the board, Returns for par compression or eq, Or just summing out to the board. How you handle Reverb, Delay Etc as a console user myself always really interested in peoples work flow.

First of all, Glenn drummers know what simultaneously means. We do in fact use all four limbs, simultaneously. Secondly, No i have nothing to add thats all i wanted to say 🤷

omg the first minute and a half had me nearly pissing myself. Then this EQ looks and sounds amazing with the price to match, but if you run a pro studio with pro clientele, this is a great piece.

Hey Glenn, what do you think about the new remix of the Rocka Rolla album? I believe it's the first one since the original 50 years ago that Priest was actually involved in?

Well now I just feel like a fool for paying money to own fabfilter plugins. My favorite virtual analog rn is probably overloud EQ550.

Would be interested to hear you create a Mesa mark v tone or Friedman tone on a budget with live gear. Also affordable cab shoot out. I know you love the Harley Benton one, but would be interesting to hear a side by side comparison with other cabs in that bracket.
