Coach, thanks for your insight and your sarcastic comedy. I have watched a couple of your Z2 videos and have gained some great useful information that I have begun to incorporate into my workouts.

From Las Vegas, Nevada here. Just spent a week in Southern Florida, and I'm about to go again. Thought my home elevation would give me an edge. But I had it backwards. South Florida air is like breathing soup. Zone 2 for 90 minutes had me wiped out.

Interesting - just tale a few days of easy riding when you go back to get used to the air - if you are part of my community group then I would love to hear how the second trip goes

Zone 2 is tops 103 bpm for me. That makes it very boring , and almost impossible to maintain during windy days. But have a fitness level of a 62 year old so at times I use 110 as my top end number for zone two. Regardless no matter both are hard to maintain. Easier on solo rides but group ride not possible. Thanks.

FTP = 260W, I checked strava and in my 3 months of cycling my best was 180W. So I guess I'm in zone 2 not bad.

Put a different way. If my perceived zone 2 (upper limit) is 200 watts (I can talk in full sentences and things feel pretty easy for one hour there) can I then infer an accurate FTP without an FTP test?

ok, after hearing your "lines of poetry", I am going to guess that you are Scottish? I was born in Scotland by accident, but unfortunately raised in the US. I am 55 and just started riding a road bike about 2 months ag, trying to use it to get back into shape and build myself back up after multiple heart attacks. I actually had my latest heart attack on April 13th trying to climb hills here in Hawaii and then completed two 100k Metric Century Rides in the last week of April. I am now trying to train for a 100 mile Century Ride coming up in September. The whole "zones" area is brand new to me, and I am trying to grasp a basic understanding of what they are and how they work so that I can start using them in my training instead of just trying to ride further each week.

First people tweak their ftp tests to get the highest possible number (e.g leaving out 5min all out before 20min or using 75% from MAP) to impress their friends, then they go on a bad day with the highest calculated z2 upper limit for the longest ride on the hottest day and are surprised its hard. There is no cure for common sense killed by inflated ego.

My ftp is way to high if i do a 20 min test. No way i could hold the number given for 1hour.

After watching alot of video on z2 I've always been told want to be near thr upper limit of z2 for most benefits but I guess if your ftp is åbit high from a race on zwift or work, my ftp after a TT on zwift came back at 285, did 300 Watts for 20 mins, I've tried doing workouts like gorby and after the first 5 min block I can't repeat it, I mean even if I drop it from 315 down to 290 i still can't do it 😂 and atm my z2 i ride at is 200-210 which maybe wrong if my ftp is too high 🤔
