I like how you make an effort to pronounce German and Italian names as they really actually sound to natives, as opposed to Anglicising them. And btw, the Swiss Transport Museum is worth the visit. Especially for a youtuber whose specialty is trains. You can also get to ride a miniature steam train which goes around the museum

Arth Goldau might be the starting point of the Gotthard Panorama Express train, but if you want the real treat, take the advertised combo of taking the ship from Lucerne to Flüelen, and then the Panorama Express to Lugano. And yes, the transport museum is definitely worth it! I dare say it is the best transport museum I've ever been in. Make sure to be there at opening time, because you will need the entire day. It is absolutely packed with both exhibits and people.

@@SuperalbsTravels I can highly recommend it! 😊 Also, try to get a day pass for the Swiss rail network - they can be as cheap as CHF 65 for first class - and then you only need to book a reservation for the train part to Lugano, which will cost about 10 Francs. That way you can use the upper deck on the ships, and it is cheaper than the second class combo offer the SBB advertise.

I'm so jealous. I've been to Switzerland 5 times and LOVE it there. I did a big 10 day holiday there with my parents in 1995, staying near Luzern and we visited the transport museum (amazing, definitely go there). We rode the line from Zurich airport to Luzern, the Brunig pass line to Interlaken, the line to Engelberg and the Pilatus and Rigi mountain railways (insanely steep). I've also visited Geneva, Bern and Basel. All amazing. Your video makes me want to go back.

The first time I saw one at HB in Zurich, I thought what a nice looking train, special… then i got to ride on one on my way from chur to zurich, and damn its such a pleasent experience. Id say the seating is a bit worse than on the older carriage trains from sbb, but the feeling you get when you walk into these SOB trains, its like youre walking into a wide open area, and theyre usually not too full, at least on the routes i was on. All together great experience, will definitely pick this train over the IR Trains sbb offers (the new double decker ones that feel like an S Bahn on the inside)

I ride this kind of train every day when commuting to work from Arth-Goldau to Zurich (Interregio 46 service), while I am generally happy with the new rolling stock, there is one thing I really dislike: whenever the train starts to enter a curve, you can hear those cylinders between the cars, you can hear it in the video aswell, that sound when they contract/expand. I LOVE Switzerland and its railway system - I'd happily live there (if I could afford to!). Some years ago, while working in Zurich, I took a circuit of Zurichsee, and stopped off at Rapperswil - very impressive little town and to my surprise had a Polish war museum (my Polish wife loved it). Luzern is cool too, I recommend a trip on the lake: it took most of the day but is stunning. I was travelling (last summer) on a day ticket, cost CHF50 for discount card holders (bought by my wife's cousin who lives in Schaffhausen), that covered all travel on trains (including Regio Express and Intercity), trams, buses and the lake steamers for the day in question. Great value and highly recommended!

Ye if you know what to buy the prices here are not bad at all… I pay 100chf a month to travel throught Zurich towards Horgen on all transportation, which I as a swiss person find totally reasonable and not overpriced at all. However I could see how for tourists the prices might look insane, especially if you go for longer rides.

In Goldau you missed the oldest line running there, the rackrailway up mt Rigi ;) And in contrast to everyone else, I would not recommend to visti the transport museum right now, as the oldest part, train hall 1 has been torn down and is currently under construction. Which results in a scaled down train collection at the moment. But hopefully it gets up to full size again with the new hall after it's opened, which would be the perfect time for a visit

It's a very pleasant route to ride, and impressive for the gradients and engineering too, although not quite as impressive as some of the true mountain lines. I rode it on the older trains in about 2014, when the Voralpen Express ran through from the Bodensee/Lake Constance ferry terminal at Romanshorn. Do they still have the optical illusion poster boards at some of the stations? They were zigzag boards with one picture on the zigs and another on the zags, with the result that the picture changed as you passed by them.

Officially the livery is "copper" and was chosen to emphasize "value and technology". Herisau is an interesting hub as it offers connections to SBB as well as Appenzellerbahn, another slower and also very scenic narrow gauge line connecting to another branch to St Gallen (formerly a rack railway, now operated by light rail units). Some of the old cars of the Voralpenexpress (modernized 1950s/60s EW I coaches called Revvivo) were sold to MÁV Nosztalgia and rebuilt for multi-system power supply, now operating excursion trains in Hungary. Südostbahn is curiously named as it isn't actually the railway operating in the southeastern part of Switzerland (that's Rhätische Bahn), but it does form a link between the east (the area around St. Gallen) and the south (connecting to the Gotthard line in Arth-Goldau and Luzern). And while RhB is the most spectacular (top of the top is the Bernina pass for me), I love the variety of landscapes that SOB has to offer. Ah, there's so much in a little country, hard to pick any favourites! Together with some other commenters I recommend the Swiss transport museum which is among the top railway museums, together with Mulhouse/France and York/England. As for the Traverso, I'm living in Austria, often taking trains between Graz, Linz and Salzburg, which are currently operated with class 1044 and a mix of intercity cars and "Cityshuttle" cab cars (with no airconditioning, no plugs and open discharge toilets). I think for these secondary mainlines a train like the Traverso would be ideal, accessible with good view and plenty of bicycle space too (which wasn't shown in the video).

11:05 Pfäffikon SZ: "SZ" is official short for the Canton of Schwyz, also used on licence plates and so on. (Each swiss Canton has a two letter short Like: St.Gallen SG, Zürich ZH, Luzern LU, Appenzell Innerhoden AI, Appenzell Ausserrhoden AR etc. Where there are multiple Villages/Cities with the same Name like it's the case here, often the Canton is added to tell which of the 3 Pfäffikon's around Switzerland it is.

Actually the Tickets are still way too expensive, for a Swiss Person, working for the Standard Salary we have. But... there are really good subscription offers. : ) Btw: Check out the Route: Bauma - Hinwil. There you can Drive with the Steamtrain. (in Summer) and as much I know only at Sundays. But its worth for a new video, I would say. Or the R.h.B Company also offers some nice Steamtrain rides in Graubünden.

I like Switserland a lot, been there only twice. It's certainly worth visiting it again and then using trains. The only thing against it are the costs having a vacation there. I've been in Luzern too, did some sightseeing in the Old City. I like the lake and the Kapellbrücke, so old and still excisting. By the way, the FLIRT trains are indeed regional trains all around Europe. I only could wish that that would look like this model in my country (Netherlands), in that case people would love them.

He explained a few seconds later that you can have major savings by booking in advance or by simply owning a half fare card, which most Swiss people have. Also many people who travel regularly in first class even own the so-called GA, a card that lets you travel almost anywhere in the whole country. This of course isn't cheap either but is worth it if you're a daily or frequent commuter.

Yes, Switzerland is pretty in the sunlight. But the fog gave it a fairytale-like look, where you can imagine the big bad wolf hiding behind a tree. Basically, Switzerland is pretty regardless of the weather. Which is a good thing, since a Swiss friend of mine says you can have four seasons in a day in Zürich.

On the power socket situation: The swiss powerplug is not only the most elegant, practical and secure plug in the world, it's the most European plug as well. Superalbs confuses the ugly big German Schuko Plug with the Euro plug standard: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europlug The Europlug 2-pin is the same size and form as the Swiss plug. Switzerland has for once been more compatible to a Euro norm than the rest of Europe.
