I think this car - especially with the smaller engine - comes pretty close to the original Porsche philosophy and embodies for me what the 911 once was: a compact sports car without excess weight. "The last car that will be built will be a sports car." (Ferdinand Porsche) Greetings from Stuttgart ;)

Great content and completely agree, the base Cayman is everything you could want. I bought the 981 GTS purely because I had the money and I hoped it wouldn't lose a dime (still hasn't). I had the 987.2 before. I'll never fully use the total extent of the car's capability and I'll run out of talent before the car does! :) Keep going with the channel, great video!

.2 base is a smart play for sure.. I rolled the dice on a .1 S, but it had the last 10 years of service history (all done at the same shop).. owner was in PCA.. it had 78k miles (means it's been driven and the IMSB has been lubed) and 0 smoke on start up (bore score tell).. Best car I've owned (#33, lol.. i go through em like Leo does with models)

I picked up a base 09 cayman PDK in January and 6 months later I absolutely love it as my daily. I've been fortunate to drive a decent amount of newer supercars (720s, 488, Huracan), and this is the closest experience I've ever had to driving one of those minus power of course. I definitely see what Porsche is all about now and I'm hooked!

Got my first ride in a base Boxster with the 2.7 couple days ago: it pulled a LOT more than I expected... I was pleasantly surprised. Bonus I guess is that the 2.7 seems more reliable than the three liter engines. So whereas I was like everyone else totally discounting the base model... they are on my radar now.

Not sure if it’s the case with the 987, but an advantage of the base 981 6MT is that 1st and 2nd gears are lower(as well as 5th and 6th), meaning that you can get into the higher part of the rev range easier and at lower speeds compared to the S, GTS etc with their longer gearing. And with the sport exhaust fitted the 2.7 sings really sweetly! Great, real world review.

I love the idea of a Base Cayman but all I can afford is a used one like yours. This makes sense as a toy second car ONLY. As a daily it could get very expensive if not under warranty as repairs are probably very expensive. Finding a pristine used one is difficult. I prefer a used Miata just as much fun but way more affordable to live with with likes stress. Mileage is not an issue with a Miata no need to keep in garage. I’m drive mine every day and it’s great! No issues after 3 years of daily driving. It’s a 2008 Miata and I got it with 78k miles now 96k miles.

Porsche introduced the Cayman S first. I waited for the 2007 “base” 2.7 Cayman and loved it. 90% of the S performance for 80% of the price, an even $50K. Cruised at 130 mph for several minutes on several occasions without a problem. Put 112K very fun miles on it, took a few cross-country trips, sold it to a very close friend, and it’s still going strong.

The key to this 2009 Cayman 987 is that it's a "dot 2" which is the first year of the completely new and improved engine that doesn't suffer from the IMS issue (11%), and other improvements. He's right about 1st gear. I shift to 2nd as soon as I can. It doesn't bother me at all. Top speed is 162 mph; something I will never come close to reaching. The chassis is solid. I have a 2010 base Boxster and love it.

Congratulations on a gorgeous car! I'm hoping to get into a Cayman or Boxster in about 4 years after I save up about half the cost. I am guilty of wanting the S model for the extra power and painted calipers... but it seems like the older ones had less problems with the base engines and they still do scoot pretty damn good!

I would love to buy a base 981 or 981S or 718 cayman. And although I know they drive and handle and sound much better than my 2018 Golf R, I’m having a hard time with buying a Porsche that is “slower” than than the Golf R. Like you said, the 987’s (and 981’s) don’t have a lot of grunt down low in the rpm range, which is why I like the 718 and the Golf R, with the turbo engines. But minus the amazing sound. So, I’m trying to get into the Cayman S. I have driven the 718, and the 718 S. And then I get back into my Golf R for the drive home after the Porsche test drives, and I’m amazed at how quick and smooth the Golf R is. Your review is great. Very informative. I was just venting/talking out loud while watching your video.

I bought exactly the same Cayman 987.2 which suits London’s overcrowded pothole ridden roads full of speed cameras. The 265 bhp is enough power for most above average drivers plus the more reasonable running cost allows me to keep my finances in good nick. It is marginally slower than my BMW e86 by a bee’s dick as they have similar bhp but the Cayman has far better suspension and handling characteristics than my e86 Z4 and will leave it on a country twisty road. Where I live everywhere I go there are chargers and challengers. You can’t go anywhere without seeing them. Mustangs too. I don’t see many Porsches which is why I feel like I would love to buy one. The look and the sound is just unlike anything else around here. Do you think that it would be an issue to buy one used like that and be putting about 150 miles a week on it? Such a nice car by the way. The only other car I see less of but still quite a few is a corvette. I’ve considered one of those as an option.
@2kviper877
@2kviper877 2 жыл бұрын
If you find a used one in good condition I.personally don't think 150 miles a week is a big deal. Especially on a lower mileage one. My recommendation would be to get a gen 2. 2009-2012. Then you don't have to worry about The IMS bearing problem and they look a little more modern the the Gen 1 caymans. Might be a good question for the cayman/ boxter owners groups on fB. These cars won't have the low end torque of a charger/ challenger/mustang/vette but it is certainly fast once the revs hit 4000 rpm or so.

Have a 2007 base - acquired it from one owner with 12k miles - for under 25k. More than enough engine - this car has more than enough power - it’s about handling and driving experience - not speed. IMS issue is overblown - in 2006 -2008 years stronger bearing was used, extremely low failure rate. Beautiful lines, piece of art and the last of the “more analog” less electronic versions that came later. Manuel is a must.

It has 98.5 K miles and so far no problem. Saw you tube videos got scared and preemptively changed cables to Numeric. Suspension is old, not as fast as my C4S but I love this cayman. Thanks I just ordered the numeric cables and shifter yesterday for the same reasons. Sadly my friend that did the work was killed by a drunk driver a few months ago.
